KMAIL - ooohhh this is really starting to...

I love kmail but I'm really starting to get frustrated. Every once in awhile Kmail will magically mark all the mail in certain folders as NEW. That wouldn't be a big problem except I spend a fair amount of time Marking messages that I find particularly fascinating as "Important". When kmail marks all the messages as new then it is easy to change the status of all messages to "Read" but I lose the visual cue I so lovingly created. Another curious effect: occasionally long deleted messages are returned to their orriginal folder (I empty the trash frequently and actually quit the program in hopes of preventing this). Kmail is not marking the mail in all folders as new, it seems to me that it is only doing this to folders that recieve unread mail (ie my filters send the incoming mail to the desired folder before I read it) Is there any way to restore the folders previous states rather than the unsatisfactory and ham fisted "folder-->mark all messages as read" menu? nb. Sprache, Icons Einstellung

Hallo zusammen! Ich habe seit eineiger Zeit eine SuSE 8.1 Prof. Installation laufen, ohne 20 weitere Probleme. Vor einigen Tagen ist mir etwas unerklärliches widerfahren. Nach dem ich einige Programme die auf meiner HD rumliegen ausprobierte, war die Sprache des KDE von Deutsch auf Englisch (bzw. Default) umgestellt, weiter waren die Icons geändert (Von Crystal auf Standard KDE [oder so]). Nun kann ich die Sprache und Icons zwar im KDE Control Center ändern, aber zu keiner änderung. Das letzte Programm das ich vermutlich ausprobiert hatte war Kwatch (Log File überwachung). Bei anderen Benutzern hat sich nichts geändert, und dort kann ich wie zu erwarten die Sprache ändern wenn ich will. Wer weiss Rat? Danke im voraus! R. Gaensli

KDE 3.1: kpackage

After an update of a SuSE-8.0-installation from KDE 3.05a to 3.1 (rpm from supplementary) kpackage of KDE-3.1 doesn't find the files in the rpm-directories in "options" any more. I think this problem already existed with an early KDE3-Version but after some updates it disappeared. Now kpackage shows only the actually installed packages from the rpm-database. i glad that an old kpackage of KDE2 still works fine.

Settings for real-player messed up

Hello One of my users cant start realplayer anymore. If a link is pressed in konq. or he just try to run it from promt - the CPU load goes to 100% until the process is killed. No realplay window. Other users on the same machine have no problems. I guess some settings for realplay is messed up - how do I restore these without loosing the entire desktop -- Regards Klaus Vink Slott

Knotes & Kalarm Lost The Plot

Can someone explain how Knotes & Kalarm can suddenly lose all my previous notes & alarms? My ~/.kde/share/apps/knotes/notes directory still contain the knote_data files, but they are zero byte files and my ~/.kde/share/apps/kalarm has the ".ics" files but they contain no valid data. This appears to have happened after ooo.org's calc program caused my system to freeze (which it does with monotonous regularity) requiring a hardware reboot. Konqueror & RPM downloads

Sometimes (often) when clicking on a web page to download an RPM, konqueror downloads the file to a temporary directory, showing progress in a separate window, and displays a page offering to show details of the RPM and to install using YaST. Other times the window just goes black, the file is fetched but there is no indication of where it (or if) it has been saved and no option to install or examine it. How do I configure konqueror to always offer to install the RPM rather than 'silently' transferring apparently to /dev/null?

.xsession-errors eats entire free space

Hi there I am using Suse Linux 8.1 Professional on IA32 with KDE 3.1 rpms from Suse's ftp site. Since I had installed KDE 3.1 rpms, Konqueror and Kopete fill ~/.xsession-errors file with repeated warnings such as shown below until the file eats up all free space on my partition. I have tried using rpm -ivh *.rpm --replacefiles --replacepkgs, but that didn't help. konqueror: WARNING: KDE detected X Error: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) \x08 Major opcode: * bitBlt: Incompatible destination pixmap kopete: WARNING: 14:30:14 [WRN] List event 0001 not found kopete: WARNING: 14:30:14 [WRN] Various event ID 0004 not found (A) Any ideas? KMail rpm

Hello, Can someone tell me which rpm contains KMail for KDE3.1. I upgraded initially from the KDE site and all went well. I then used the newly released KDE3.1 from SuSE's ftp site and now KMail won't work. It segfaults. I want to go back to KDE site and use that rpm only to fix KMail since it worked from that site, unless someone can give other suggestions. Thanks in advance, Keith B.

Keyboard group toggle in KDE 3.1

I have problems with my keyboard group toggle. With KDE3.04 I had used /etc/X11/XF86Config to set the toggle keys to alt-shift (to toggle between keyboard language settings, greek - US in my case). Now, I saw the Keyboard Settings dialogue in the Control Center, and set there the "Group Shift/Lock behaviour" to "Alt+Shift changes group". As soon as I applied it, the nice mini-US flag in Kicker showed up, but the toggle keys didn't work anymore... I can change the keyboard, clicking the flag, so that at least works. I commented out the setting in XF86Config for possible interference problems, but that didn't help. Any ideas? Kostas

kmail - illegal character in input stream!

Hi all, i am using KDE 3.1 on SuSE 8.1. I've problems with KMail, it seems that Emails with german charsets are not displayed correctly. I got the following msg in the console WARNING: QuotedPrintableDecoder: ü illegal character in input stream! Ignoring. WARNING: QuotedPrintableDecoder: ß illegal character in input stream! Ignoring. for every character in the viewed email which is not part of the us-ascii (?) charset. The charset int the content-type in the message header is correctly set ... Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" 'Set encoding' in the 'View' menu is set to Automatic, but if i set it manually to ISO-8859-1 or ISO-8859-15 the problem is the same. I've set up SuSE (and KDE) with english language maybe that's the problem? Strange is, that i got a HTML email, which is displayed correctly. (Content-Type: multipart/alternative; ...) May i've to set a certain environment variable or could that be a kde bug? thx in advance brunft

8.0 KDE 3.1 pkgs VS 8.1 KDE 3.1 pkgs...why is 8.0 lacking?

Question for any SuSE people on the list. Why weren't all the KDE 3.1 pkgs that were made for 8.1 made for 8.0? I hope it's not as lame as the font smoothing and icons smoothing excuse between 7.3 and 8.0. Mainly because 8.1 and 8.0 have pretty much the same XFree86 version and many other libs are the same. login manager

Hi folks, On a suse 8.0/KDE 3.1 machine. Since the somewhat discussed move to 3.1 the login manager on the control center won't implement changes. Heard someone saying that there is a bug preventing the manager to write to the config. Is there a way to sort this? Got used to my old settings.... can't be blamed by that, I guess... Thanks to all Ps. My kde graphic Yast2 still not working. Doesn't seems to be a qt3/qt3-non-mt issue as I tryed both. Getting along with the terminal. Marconi

messed up login (KDE 3.1 on Suse 8.1)

Hello together I just moved to Kde 3.1 on a new installed suse 8.1. I was playing around with the settings of the Loginmanager (put a clock, my user should be preselected etc.) Now what i got is a list of many users (dialup,.....) and of the possible sessions KDE is gone :( (in the kcontrolcenter it says that it should be there) When login now i just get a xterm from where I can start Kde, and then everything works fine. I putted all settings back to defaults, but nothing :( Anyone an idea how to get this thing back. I would have no problem with reinstalling the rpm containing the loginmanager, etc. Thanks for your help Andi

Listen up - konq fix!

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Ok, word has come down from on high that many of the issues people have experienced has been fixed, e.g. the KDE Crash Handler presenting itself each time at shut. One of the workarounds was to delete the .kde folder in the <user> directory. This was not very favorable concerning settings, files and desktop customization being lost. Seems there was a short time a kdebase3 package didn't have the kdebase3-konqeror package in it. So a YaST installed (or manually installed) kdebase3-konqueror packages weren't available - this is now fixed NOW to FIX this you'll need to do rpm -e kdebase3-konqueror and then reinstall the "kdebase3" package provide on the SuSE ftp site for kde. You can do this manually by downloading the package, or if YaST is set up and accessing the alternative ftp "yast-source" directory then you can go this route. Just a reminder. SuSE has created a "yast-source" directory on the public ftp server under the parent directory of kde supplementary updates of 8.1 (I haven't looked at the other versions to see of this is there - ? don't know if it is ). Anyway, to be able to use YaST via install and remove software you start YaST - ->Change source of installation -> add ftp. Server: ftp.gwdg.de Directory: pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_8.1/yast… Be sure that the kde 3.1 is the first source (button up/down - move to top). Start Yast: add/remove software and you should see the kde3.1 package. This system has just been put in place and has only been officially tested with two machines. Others had noted that they can use this while some have had little success - this issue, if your experiencing it, should be resolved in due course. Cheers and hope this helps. desktop icons dont stick

I am using Suse 8.1 with KDE 3.1 After doing an upgrade with apt-get, any icons I add to the desktop or any icons I move on the desktop, disappear or simply move back to original position. I know I have seen the answer to this question but after 2 hours of searching the mail lists, google and the faqs, I give up and beg for help. What am I missing? Thanks, Richard

YAST text input not working.

Hi guys, I've recently upgraded my laptop to KDE 3.1 running Suse 8.1 and most things seem to be fine. I'm currently trying to setup profiles so that I can use it at work and home on the networks, but have discovered that I can't enter any text from the keyboard into the edit fields in YAST. I can past in text I type in say Eterm, but can't directly enter anything. Any ideas where to look? BTW, the profiles don't seem to be working too well either, but the two things might be related I guess. Thanks. Peter.

Need Help Getting Kpilot Working in SuSE 8.1

This I believe is caused by the fact that a hot sync has not been proformed so they have not been created. Konqueror right-click context menu

Hi, I upgraded from KDE 3.0.5 to 3.1 on my Suse 8.1 system using yast with the 3.1 packages that Suse provides on their site. In konqueror 3.0.5 I used to have a 'Copy to' and a 'Move to' entry in the context menu when right-clicking a file or directory. Now it's gone although it should be there according the 3.1 documentation. Anyone on restoring the 'Copy to' and 'Move to' entry in the right-click contect menu? How to create my own K-Menu?

Hi, how can I create my own additional start menu in kicker? I've been trying to firstly add a new K-Menu an then to edit this with the menu editor. Unfortunately this altered the original K-Menu too. Is there any possibility to create a generic menu which is customizable according to entries, their naming and organisation in subentries or folders, respectively, and their order, too? Probably I have to manually alter some configuration files. Please tell me which one if you know. Any hints are very appreciated! Best regards, Thomas Michalka

kmail folders acting strange

Will Yast support update to kde3.1?

I followed the instructions on the http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm. The site will give you all the information you need. When the apt was up and running I installed a few harmful packages to convince myself that everythis was working. I then installed one package after the other. When I was finished I installed them a second time to make sure all dependencies had been resolved. For a moment I had problems with icons disapearing but they showed up later when installing other packages. I guess you better install from a proper root login rather than loggin as a root under your personal account. I have had no problems since. kwebdesktop cannot render fonts below 12px?

Hi! Can anybody confirm that kwebdesktop cannot render any font smaller than 12px? I made a screenshot here: http://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=1019&action=view The source of this page is: <html> <body> </body> </html> and i rendered it with: kwebdesktop 350 250 image.png "http://localhost/test.html" and the page renders perfect in Konqueror... Does anybody know a workaround or another tool to use instead of kwebdesktop? Greets, Daniel

problems with kopete 0.6.1

Hello, I have updated my kopete via download from SuSE Linux KDE Service. the new version is kopete 0.6.1 on my KDE 3.1 (SuSE 8.0). If I want to launch kopete nothing happens. If I call it on konsole, the error "Speicherzugriffsfehler" appears. But if I call kopete via root with "kdesu kopete" then the application starts to work. I backed up my previous kopete settings to a different location and I deleted all personal settings from previous version of kopete. How can I get to work as a normal user? Slow Desktop since memory upgrade

Hi, I use SuSE Prof. 8.0 and since I added additional 256MB RAM to get 512MB, the KDE 3 desktop is noticeable slower. Do I have to change whatever configuration somehow? problems with kopete 0.6.0

Hello, I have updated my kopete via download from SuSE Linux KDE Service. the new version is kopete 0.6.0 on my KDE 3.1 (SuSE 8.0). If I want to launch kopete nothing happens. If I call it on konsole, the error "Speicherzugriffsfehler" appears. But if I call kopete via root with "kdesu kopete" then the application starts to work. I backed up my previous kopete settings to a different location and I deleted all personal settings from previous version of kopete. How can I get to work as a normal user? kwebdesktop vs. meta refresh

Hi! I have a question regarding kwebdesktop. If kwebdesktop should fetch a page that has a meta refresh header line (e.g. <meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="300">) then kwebdesktop doesn't return and seems to hang. I assume that khtml is waiting for the refresh event. Thus I cannot take a webpage as desktop-background if this page has such an entry. This is even worse, because if you start KDE, kdesktop is waiting for kwebdesktop to finish, before it shows the icons etc. So you only have the grey X background. Is there a known workaround? I've noticed that konq. doesn't seem to like that particular line at all. I've got my own site set up with that exact line and konq won't refresh it at all. Missing blue and white background in konqueror 3.1

Hi, I upgraded from KDE 3.0.5 to 3.1 on my Suse 8.1 system using yast with the 3.1 packages that Suse provides on their site. In 3.0.5 I used to see the nice blue and white stripes in konqueror using the the 'detailed list view mode'. In 3.1 the background is plain white. Anyone on restoring the stripes? I know they consist of the background color and the alternate background color that can be set using KDE control center -> look and feel -> colors. Everything fine there but still no stripes. Suse 8.1, KDE 3.1 and Konqueror

After installing 3.1, Konqueror has stopped working. Clicking on the icon results in a busy icon for maybe 30 seconds and then nothing. Running konqueror from a shell, results in nothing, except a message "Alarm clock" and then the prompt returns. I assume that is a time out. Any suggestions? Bill Hogsett

I set up a cvs repository and can import. checkout, commit etc from the command line no problems at all. Cervisia version is 1.5rich1 (Using KDE 3.0.5) If I run cervisia select Repository and and configure my cvs repository (/home/cvs) the checkout and import menu options under repository remain greyed out (unavailable). If I close cervisia, use the cvs checkout from the command line then run cervisia I can commit and update etc from inside cervisia. If I try to checkout (which is now available) naming a module it will succesfully checkout that module. If I attempt to fetch the list of modules cervisia will crash. I feel I have missed somthing obvious in the the way I access or have setup cvs. Any toughts appreciated. Ooops.... Sorry. Thought I was posting to the german list. My fault.... Wont happen again, promised ;-) So.... I have the following problem: Since I updated to KDE 3.1 (using the SuSE-Packages, after all!) I can't get back my SuSE-icons. I know where they are (below /opt/kde3 aso), but I'm really not eager to assign each and every single icon by hand... It's not possible to install them as a new icon theme, either, since there's no icon-archive around... If anybody could help me... I'm really desperate... KMail Fails after KDE3.1 update from SuSE site

Hello, Hope someone can help. I have updated SuSE 8.1 to KDE 3.1 from SuSE's site and now KMail won't load any more. Everything else seems to work okay. Here is the error I get: KDEInit could not launch 'kmail'. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Keith B.

Hi Thank you all for useful tips on an earlier inquiry on the KDE 3.1 installation. Richard Bos: I followed your advice on using the apt. A nice piece of software that solved the entire process smoothly without any problems. I find the KDE 3.1 runs more efficiently and with less bugs than my previous installation SuSE 8.0 + KDE 3.04. However I encountered the following: Having installed KDE 3.1 I did get an icon on the K-menu allowing me to login to another user GUI desktop. Using <alt>F7 and <alt>F8 it was possible to switch between different logins. I did not have this facility before the KDE 3.1 installation. Now the icons has disappeared again. Do anyone know about this ? I have never seen any commercials for this nice feature and would really like to get it back again. Greateful for any help or information Sven

Als neues Thema installieren kann ich auch nicht, da das Verzeichnis, wo die Icons drin liegen, halt kein Symbol-Archiv ist... Ich will meine Icons zurück! HILFE! Bin für jeden Hinweis dankbar... Bad Bug - Konqi goes wild on RPM

Hi Everyone, Twice now when I have had Konqi open to a local dir, when I single click (left) on a RPM package Konqi goes wild and brings the machine down. Details: SuSE 8.1 up to date via YOU, KDE 3.0.5, dual P-III 1.2GHz 512MB ram. Left clicking a RPM pkg in Konqi causes Konqi to start opening new Konqi instances continuiously and limitlessly; the proliferation of Konqi windows eventually kills the system. I've learned to Ctrl-Alt-Bkspace to kill X before the system crashes. Inever seen anbything like this ever before, and I hope never again! Anyone seen this? Can anyone offer any help? kde3.1 - konqueror crashes when reading html

Hi all, with most rc's and also with the latest snapshots (post release, on SuSE 8.1) of kde3.1 konqueror runs as file manager, but not as html browser. Whenever I want to open a html page, remote or local, by typing in the url or by clicking on a file, konqeror crashes without an error message. When I installed the rpm's from kde for SuSE 8.1 it worked fine. However because kdm was not so nice with the rpm's and most of all because konsole and kword did not run anymore I did install the latest snapshots of kde3.1 (just libs and base though). Now konsole works, kdm rocks, and I can use konq as filemanager, but not as browser. OK, I can use Opera, which is the best anyway, but it is still annoying. Any ideas? I haven't seen this reported, so may be it is just a local configuration issue. Thanks, Matt

Library problems with KDE3.1 under SuSE 7.2

Hello. I've recently installed KDE3.1 on my SuSE 7.2 system, and I've encountered some difficulties. Whenever I right click the pager and choose "Configure Virtual Desktops", I get a popup window that says: "There was an error loading the module". The diagnostics line reads: 'Library files for "libkcm_konq.la" not found in paths' I get a similar message if I right click the desktop and choose "Configure Desktop", and then pick the "Desktop" item from the list on the left. Why is libkcm_konq.la missing? Did I forget to install something, is something misconfigured, or is there a file missing in the distribution? -John

kmail configuration dissapeared from menu (in latest snapshot)

Hi, in order to modify my Email accounts I tried to enter the configuration in the kmail menu, but it was gone. Is that just my installation of the almost latest (post release) snapshot, or has somebody seen (and hopefully solved) this? (SuSE 8.1 with the kde.org kde3 release rpms installed and some compiled snapshots after it.) It is of course possible to edit the kmailrc files manually, but that is surely not the way it was meant to be ;-) Thanks, Matt T.

Login Manager & KDE3.1

OK I am back with a newly installed 8.0 system. Yast2 works in graphical mode after installing qt3-non-mt. Current problem - I changed the Login Manager background using Control Centre. Now I get a list of groups/users (dialout etc) at the login screen. I can't then login as the system hangs after accepting my password. Need to kill xserver, login via text based console and then startx. When back in KDE I tried going back to the default background. But changes made don't appear to be saved and when rebooting I get the same login problem. Help Phil

Virtual Desktops not conveniently switchable

Here's *not* my tranlation because I understand the problem now: In KDE 3.1 the numbering order of virtual desktops changes between two orientations of kicker. Let's have an example with 12 desktops as I have configured. KDE2: 1 3 5 7 9 11 2 4 6 8 10 12 This arrangement remains constantly with no concern to position of kicker (vertical/horizontal). In contrast to the KDE2-related behaviour KDE3 rearranges the desktop numbering according to kicker orientation as follows: KDE3 with vertically oriented kicker: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 KDE3 with kicker oriented horizontally: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 While changing the arrangement geometry is just a bit strange (you could forget the desktop switcher in kicker or simply remove it) the shortcut-to-number-mapping is really inconvenient, because one has to rearrange his/her imagination of desktops in mind. An Example: Suppose you are on Desktop 1. While "Desktop up/down" for vertical arrangement switches between 1 and 3 the same shortcut for horizontal arrangement switches between 1 and 7. Having the horizontal arrangement in mind it's really confusing to use a vertical oriented kicker. A related problem is with the program kpager and vertical oriented kicker. While in kpager the desktop arrangement is constant and matches with a horizontal oriented kicker users of kpager have a permanent mismatch of desktop arrangements. For those one the only workaround at the moment would be to orient the kicker to horizontal position. But note that KDE3 also rearranges the virtual desktops when you change the kicker geometry, e.g to enable smaller icons. With a slim kicker the arrangement would be 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 and therefore the up/down shortcut wouldn't work until the kicker's height returns to "Normal" (related to icon size). To make kpager reorientable obviously wouldn't help because it would not rearrange the orientation in mind. So my appeal to KDE developers for KDE3.2 is: Please let the desktop arrangement and shortcut-to-number-mapping remain constantly if the user wishes it. Even a better suggestion: Let the user choose an arrangement not bound to the kicker geometry, e.g. two lines: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 three lines: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 May be this isn't the suitable place - if so, would anyone please tell me the right one? BTW: I would like to suggest that instead of desktop numbers a kpager should appear in the center of the screen whenever one switches the desktop with a shortcut. This would increase the convenience of visual desktop handling. An additional proposal is to embed a kpager to the desktop switcher on kicker that comes up whenever one points with the mouse on it. So mouse users could switch between desktops more convenient than it's possible with a rolling up kpager window always in front (my current window configuration for kpager). arial font konqueror

Hello, I seem to have a problem with the font "Arial" in konqueror. All typical German characters (e.g. umlaute as ü ä ...) are simply left out on webpages as well as on file and directory names. There is no such problem with Helvetica or e.g. any of the Nimbus fonts. For filenames, i can simply change the standard font of the file manager to helvetica. But I can't browse a webpage that formats its text as arial (eg www.yahoo.de). I run Suse 8.1, to which I upgraded from Suse 7.3. I never tried to manipulate any fontsettings on the box manually, and the problem did not arise in the prior 7.3 install. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks, Alex

Konqueror anomally

Hi all, I am wondering if anyone else has noticed this in their new Konq 3.1? It is working great for all sites and I find myself using it for 99% of my browsing, but the bug appears when downloading a file/s. When you start a download, your point usually gets a little clock attached to it until it finishes or starts, then goes away. Mine is staying on now, until I close down that sesson of Konq. Not a biggy, but it shouldn't be doing that. Anyone else seeing that too? This would increase the convenience of visual desktop handling. An additional proposal is to embed a kpager to the desktop switcher on kicker that comes up whenever one points with the mouse on it. KDE on SuSe 8.0 Pro.

Hi list, I consider myself new to Linux since i started using Linux in August of 2002. First i must point out to you the fact that my system has no upgrades or patches on it that fixes some bugs, this is because my system is not connected to the internet, and i see no reason to install those patches. After i installed the following packages of KDE 3.1: kdebase3 kdelibs3 qt3 qt3-non-mt And then rebooted the system to see how KDE 3.1 looks like, but when the system came at the point to schow me the login screen it just flashes a few times. Then goes back with this on it: Linux login: After i loged in i tryed to start KDE with this command: startkde But no luck, i get a message with a number of complaints. To me when i look at the message i can see only one problem, this is a part of the message: startkde: Could not startkdeinit.Check your installation. Error: Can't open display. Warning: connect ( ) failed: no such file or directory. startkde: Shutting down ... Warning: connect ( ) failed: no such file or directory. Error: Can't contact kdeinit ! To me it looks like a problem with kdeinit, as i sayed before this computer has no connection to the internet. To install KDE 3.1 i downloaded the packages on another computer and burnt them on a cd-rw, these packages i copieed to /home/xxx/Documents. And then installed them with YAST2 using the following command in Kconsole: yast -i /home/xxx/Documents/<package>.rpm When i had closed Kconsole i wanted to open it again, but there was a message saying something about kdeinit. I searched the list but could not find the sollution to my problem, i also searched on suse-linux-e without any luck. Who can help me with this ? What must i do to get KDE 3.1 up and running ? Problem with gtk apps in kde

Hi, I am a newbie to linux and have recently installed SuSE 8.1. I run it with KDE. Now, some applications start with totally screwed windows and no fonts (but they start). Some examples are Gimp, Ethereal, Gqview, Grip. As far as I understand these are gtk+ applications, So I thought I might be missing the correct libraries. But in the Software Install section of YaST2 both gtk+ and glib are installed. Is there maybe a problem with the path? maybe with the fonts? Although I doubt the latter. Gimp starts with a window that is ca. 1 1/2 screens high and 1/8 screen wide. Any suggestions ? Kostas

KMail message conversion?

All, I opened KMail a few minutes ago, and glancing at my inbox I saw some new messages, including one from Daimler-Chrysler (I used to lease an Intrepid). I clicked on it to have a brief look, before deleting it. As soon as I clicked, the contents flashed for a moment in the message pane and then vanished. In the inbox list, the Subject, Sender and Date changed to "No Subject Unknown Unknown". I clicked on the message immediately below, and the same thing happened. I exited KMail and re-launched. The two messages still show "No Subject Unknown Unknown", and have no contents. Clicking on other messages, now, does not seem to cause the strange effect. Is this normal/expected behavior? /kevin

Hi Phil! Please reply to list. You surely agree, that the solution could be interesting for more people beside you, don't you? I think when you use the graphical link from your kde menue, then kde tries to start yast2 as a kcontrol module (like "kdesu kcmshell YaST/Misc/yast2" on my 7.3). With KDE 3.1 some things have changed here and I think that's not possible anymore. Please check on your system and change the properties of the link to execute "kdesu yast2". This should fix things. KGhostview zeigt manche PDF-Dateien nicht an

Hallo zusammen, schon unter KDE2 konnte ich mit kghostview PDF-Dateien, die ich von der Bundesversicherungsanstalt heruntergeladen habe, nicht anschauen. Die Fehlermeldung lautet: Öffnen der Datei <PDF-Datei> nicht möglich. Was kann die Ursache sein? NB.: Mit acroread kann ich alle anzeigen, aber manche mehrseitige nicht ausdrucken, obwohl ich mir Acrobat Reader 5 installiert habe. Bin für keden Rat dankbar! Gruß Thomas Michalka

Virtuelle Desktops nicht umschaltbar

Hallo zusammen, in KDE 3.1 hat sich offenbar die Nummerierungsreihenfolge der virtuellen Desktops, wie sie z.B. im klassischen Zweizeiler von kpager sichtbar werden, geändert. Bei mir sind es 12 Stück. KDE2: 1 3 5 7 9 11 2 4 6 8 10 12 KDE3: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 Bei mir ergibt z.B. "Desktop rauf/runter" einen Wechsel zwischen 1 und 2, so wie das unter KDE2 auch richtig war. Entweder ist der kpager schon auf die "neue", aber falsche Reihenfolge, umgestellt, obwohl das Mapping der Tastenkürzel auf die Nummern sich gar nicht ändern sollte, oder das Mapping der Konfiguration der Tastenkürzel "Desktop rauf", "Desktop runter", "Desktop links", "Desktop rechts" auf die neue Nummerierungsreihenfolge wurde schlicht und einfach vergessen. Kennt jemand einen Workaround, so daß man dennoch mittels Tastatur den Desktop schnell wechseln kann? Schöne Grüße Thomas Michalka

Dämonischer Druck in KDE 3.1?

Hallo liebe "Liste-ner", als ich gerade über kprinter drucken will, bekomme ich die Fehlermeldung, daß der kdeprintd nicht läuft. Ich denke, daß ich da sicher was zu konfigurieren vergessen habe, aber im Kontrollzentrum/Druckerkonfiguration finde ich nichts, was ich weiter konfigurieren könnte. Außerdem meine ich doch, daß irgendwelche Druckdämonen beim KDE-Start automatisch gestartet werden müßten, oder? Folgende locate-Ausgaben erhalte ich: $> locate kdeprintd /opt/kde2/lib/kde2/libkded_kdeprintd.la /opt/kde2/lib/kde2/libkded_kdeprintd.so /opt/kde2/share/services/kded/kdeprintd.desktop /opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kded_kdeprintd.la /opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kded_kdeprintd.so /opt/kde3/share/services/kded/kdeprintd.desktop kdeprintd unter kde3 ist also installiert, was nu? Folgende Ausgabe habe ich veranlaßt, weil eine Fehlermeldung kam, als ich nach der Auswahl der Druckerkonfiguration in den Systemverwaltungsmodus wechseln wollte: kdeprint_lpd.la konnte nicht gefunden werden - gibt's bei mir unter kde3 auch nicht, wie man sieht: $> locate kdeprint_lpd.la /opt/kde2/lib/kde2/libkdeprint_lpd.la Die Frage ist, wo bekommt man diese Library für KDE 3.1 her? Jetzt habe ich doch noch was zum Konfigurieren gefunden (warum das allerdings nötig sein soll, verstehe ich nicht, denn mein Drucker und der CUPS-Server ist schon seit SuSE 7.3 eingerichtet und funktioniert ja auch), nämlich unter + Angeschlossene Geräte + Drucker --> ausgewählt LaserJet6P + Reiter "Eigenschaften" Wenn ich da den Treiber einstellen möchte, bekomme ich ieder diese Meldung über den fehlenden kdprintd. Das schein also das zentrale Problem zu sein. Nur, wer startet diesen normalerweise, oder wie kann ich das selber erreichen? Für jedwede Hilfe bin ich sehr dankbar! Viele Grüße, Thomas Michalka

different openmotif-versions in KDE3.1

Hi All, I've installed KDE 3.1 on SuSE 8.1 and it works just fine. The only problem I have is that a program I have to use requires openmotif2.1.30MLI4-288. But KDE 3.1 comes with openmotif-2.2.2-111 which causes my program to fail. The later version is required by some kdebase-packages so I don't really want to uninstall it. Whenever I try to install the older version, yast shows me that the older version will be updated automatically to the newer version! Is there a way to keep the older version in parallel? Or can I force KDE to use the older version or is the new one substantial to kde 3.1? Thanks Matthias

File Manager Problems with 3.1

I am still having problems with File Manager Super User in 3.1. If I set /tmp/mcop-dbtrol to owned by root this works fine but on booting I get an error from arts that there is a sound server fatal error because /tmp/mcop-dbtrol is not owned by user. If I change the directory to be owned by user then File Manager Super User comes up and immediately shuts down. How do I fix this or is this a known bug. TIA David

Hi. I had the same problem on my SuSE 8.1 Pro when i installed KDE 3.1. I think that has nothing to do with Yast2 but mainly with KDE. Try to download all the KDE's 3.1 RPMs from one ftp site e.g from ftp.kde.org/...../..... Sometimes,this problem appears a few times on my SuSE with KDE 3.1. I think kdesud is responsible for this... Just to verify this, run from the Konsole : 'kdesu konqueror'. If the kdesu dialog appears try not to check 'Remember password'. If it does not appear try 'ps -xa' from your Konsole. Try to find the line '/opt/kde3/bin/kdesud'. If you find it , kill that process with 'kill -9 PID' where PID is the process ID. When u kill the kdesu daemon, try again. Hi Just installed KDE 3.1 on SuSE 8.0 and everything appears fine but YaST2 will no longer run. It starts, but after I enter the root password nothing happens other than the dialog box closing! I have re-installed YaST2 from the original CDs and applied all updates but no change. Any ideas? Thanks in advance Phil

Hi Mike! Normally you should aks such a question to the list too. Perhaps there are other eople who want to know, perhaps I tell you s.th. wrong and anybody knows better. You have to update at very least the base packages (kdebase3, kdelibs3, qt3.1) and i suggest you update all the packages, where you have installed an older version by now. It is now the 11th but the content of the page is the same Jan 29th, 2003 and Oct 10, 2002 packages that were there last week. Does anyone know if or when the SuSE KDE 3.1 material will be avail? japanese symbols on everybuddy

Hi! I have a strange problem: One of my contacts (via AIM) comes up with japanese looking symbols on everybuddy (0.4.3 on suse 8.0 box system). When I pull up the log I can read what she is saying, but that's kinda pain in the rear... All my other contacts (AOL and yahoo) come over fine... Any idea where I should look??? Thanks HG

3.1 /tmp/mcop-

After upgrading to 3.1 on a 8.0 Pro system I was getting a error on boot saying /tmp/mcop-dbtrol was not owned by me. All else seemed to be working including File Manager Super User Mode. After changing owner to dbtrol the File Manager SUM now comes up and immediately disappears. If I change ownership back to root it works fine. Question is should there be a /tmp/mcop-root directory, Also should there be a root/.mcop which I remember before upgrading. TIA David

Hallo, Wahrscheinlich wurde das schon oft gefragt und diskutiert, aber ich bin erst seit ein paar Tagen auf der Liste, deshalb entschuldigt meine Frage bitte. Welches ist der einfachste Weg um KDE 3.1 auf Suse 8.1 zu installieren? Kann mir vielleicht jemand ein paar Zeilen dazu weiterleiten oder schreiben? Ich würde mich sehr über jede Hilfe freuen! I just reinstalled SuSE 8.1 on a machine thinking I could go to the LinuKs page and download the Liquid RPM and have the liquid "theme" running, only to discover that the old version 0.9.5 for KDE 3.0.x is no longer there, replaced by 0.9.6 which is only for KDE 3.1. I know this is kind of trivial, but is the old RPM still available anywhere? kde 3.1 causes applications to crash and icons to be not shown

Hi there, I've downloaded KDE 3.1 final RPMs for SuSE 8.1 from the kde web site, and after exerincing the same trouble (that sill remains) those from the suse.com ftp site (supplementary-dir). I then had the situation that my user still showed kde 3.0-design, but root was obviously seeing keramik already. I then used the control center and the desktop-settings-wizard (einrichtungsassistent) respectively to mirate my user to keramik. These "troubles" have three facets: 1) -I don't see all the icons, i.e. i see a blank space where log off and lock should be 2) -Almost every start of a program (e.g. konqueror) tells me "kdecore (KLocale): WARNING: found no definition of PluralForm for de" 2) -Far more important: applications keep crashing. This does for example affect (kde 3.1's) konqueror as soon as i start to download a file, or kate as soon as i click on the "open" button. Kopete does not start any more, although i updated it to 0.51 when it started sigserving at start. Can anybody help me and/or does anybody know about those problems? Konquer 3.1 quirks?

Hi all, I am curious if anyone else has noticed this anomally with Konq 3.1 yet. Although much improved, there are times when I want to try the KMozilla feature from the View part of the menu. As there was a new version supplied with all the files, I guessed that would allow that part to still work, but alas, it does not. If I select to view a page as Mozilla in Konq, all I get is a blank page! I see the page being loaded, but it fails to display anything. Now this could be due partially to the fact, I am running the Mozilla version from Mozilla.org instead of the SuSE install. That comes to me as the most obvious thing, but I thought I would throw it out to everyone to see if anyone has experienced the same thing? Wait, as a matter of fact, I do have the SuSE version installed as well, since Mozilla installs to /usr/local rather than the usual SuSE locations. But this brings up another thought, I have the SuSE 8.0 versions installed due to the java plugin problem, so maybe that is affecting it? Your thoughts & experiences please. Hallo, Ich möchte einen vncserver während des Bootvorgangs (in Runlevel 5) starten der eine KDE Oberfläche anbietet (Suse 8.1). Wenn ich mich allerdings mit dem vncserver verbinde, sehe ich nur einen Bildschirm mit rotem Hintergrund (der Suse-KDE-Root-Hintergrund?) und einem Mauspfeil. Es gibt keinen Login und keine Bedienelemente. Ich habe ein Script "vncserver" in /etc/init.d/ erstellt und verlinkt (insserv). Das Script wird als /etc/init.d/rc5.d/S13vncserver ausgeführt beim Booten. Das Script startet im Prinzip nur den vncserver mit Parameter :1 und zeigt das auch ordentlich auf demBildschirm während des Bootens an, außerdem beendet das Script den vncserver wenn der Rechner heruntergefahren wird. After upgrading to 3.1 I get the following errors: On xconsole I get kdm_config[974]: unrecoqnized section mane [Desktop 0] at /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc:1 When starting KsCd I get error-KsCD Unable to create directory /opt/kde3/share/apps/kscd/cddb Check Permissions If I click ok on this and then click start on KsCD window tunes play fine. On booting after logging in to kde I receive a box with Sound Server Fatal Error: /tmp/mcop-dbtrol is not owned by user. Any ideas on these. TIA David

external screensaver instead of kde - own; does not work

Hello! (I just posted this question in German. I am sorry, I forgot it is an English list) After installation of SuSE 8.1 I am using also KDE as GUI. Now, I would like to use the external screensaver "xscreensaver" instead of the KDE-own one. Because xscreensaver changes the "pictures" itself during the current pop -up of screensaver. In opposite to KDE -as far as I know- which chooses one "picture" for the current moment and changes it after next time popping-up only. Please correct my if I am wrong (what to do to adjust?). Nevertheless I deactivated the screensaver via KDE Control Center and added "xscreensaver" in .xinitrc. But it does not work. The program starts, but does not popping up after adjusted time elapsed (parameters are to find in ~/.xscreensaver). Is there something more to adjust to achieve success? Hallo! Nachdem ich SuSE 8.1 inst. habe, verwende ich auch KDE als GUI. Nun möchte ich den externen screensaver "xscreensaver" anstelle des KDE-eingenen einsetzen, weil dieser von sich aus und automatisch die "Pausenbildchen" wechselt, während er sich eingeschaltet hat. (Im Gegensatz -so weit ich es gesehen habe- zu KDE, der immer nur das Bild wechselt, wenn sich der BS-Schoner erneut einschaltet). -> Bitte korrigiert mich, falls es auch anders geht (wie?). Jedenfalls habe ich via Control Center den KDE BS-Schoner deaktiviert und den "xscreensaver" in .xinitrc eingetragen. Leider ohne Erfolg: Das Programm startet zwar, tritt aber nicht in den Vordergrund, nachdem die Wartezeit abgelauten ist. no background picture behind login manager (3.1)

Since I upgraded to kde-3.1 I don't seem to be able to alter the background image of the login manager. This is at all systems I've upgraded (more than 1 ;) Does others have a similar experience, is there a solution? [maybe OT] I'm working with some people on translating kde into Frisian the 2nd language of The Netherlands. However, if all (nl) /opt/kde3/share/locale/nl/LC_MESSAGES/*.mo files are copied to the nl_FY counter part and after that the above rpm is installed the Frisian words appear. That's likely what I'll be doing tonight, then. :-) By the way, anybody, is the ftp.kde.org site faster than the ftp.gwdg.de site? My original major update (that I said took 18 hours) was done via my ADSL connection, but apt-get reported speeds between 200B/s and 28.6kB/s, mostly with the gwdg site. While we are on the topic, can somebody please let me know what I *should* have done to have the KDE3.1 install and work directly off the repository(ies)?? What is so special about KDE3.1 that it is more resistant to installing than any of 1000 other packages that successfully went in? In order to get a working KDE3.1 onto my system, I would have been HAPPY to sacrifice existing programs from my system, if they somehow conflicted. I would equally have been HAPPY to forget about any pending non-KDE3.1 updates/upgrades if THEY were somehow in conflict. I made choices with apt-get, and then with synaptic, to resolve any reported conflicts or dependency problems, before I gave the big go-ahead. Why would it still crap out? My rpm database was in whatever state YaST/YOU had left it. I have never installed ANY apps from source. I have never issued a --force or --nodeps (to my knowledge). Is there a command option for apt-get that says "I don't care what you have to do to get KDE3.1 in and working, just do it"?? I don't mean --nodeps, or anything that will leave me with a bunch of time-bombs. I mean, if a package/program/ library already on my system is in conflict, then that package/program/library gets ripped out, automatically, and KDE3.1 goes in. Is there a way to do that without going package-by-package, by hand? I figure that once I had KDE3.1 working and stable, I could worry about re-installing other apps that were sacrificed... or finding replacements could peacefully co-exist. /kevin

All, I've seen discussion of moving your e-mail from MS Outlook over to Linux and KMail. What about going the other way? I have several thousands of messages in KMail that I'd like to have available *as e-mail messages* in Outlook. A change at the company has required that I get rid of my Linux partition and go back to Windows and Outlook. I can use Linux on another computer, but my e-mail is to be handled via Exchange Server and Outlook.... darn-it! I know that I can just move everything over as plain text, but it would be much more useful to integrate all the messages that I've kept in KMail for the past 14 months back into Outlook -- which I was previously using. Install 'NETSCAPE 4.79' in Winzoz. Then copy mbox files into the user directory, usually 'x:\Program files\Netscape\Users\identity\Mail. They will be automatically translated/indexed for Netscape (the format is the same, indexes are different! so copy only mbox file!!!) Then from Outlook Express You can import Netscape 4.79 mail files (don't try with Netscape6,7/Mozilla, it won't work!) Ciao, Luca

Hi out there, I have problems with the kdemultimedia-package (3.1) within suse 7.3. There seems to be no way to enable the midi-players to play with my Soundblaster AWE32 and alsa-0.5.12-0 :-(( The binary-rpms don't work. I can't even select any midi-device. And run from the commandline I get the error-message "Sorry, this KMid version was compiled without ALSA support but you're using ALSA .". So I compiled it on my own, (--with-alsa and --enable-sound=alsa) but I got the same result! Can anybody give me a hint, where I can find a binary kmid running with a sb awe, or even what do I need to compile by my self. Or even how to do the configure?! I'm running SuSE 8.1. I downloaded and installed the kcommander3-3-0-281 RPM. YAST installed the package without warnings or problems. However, I'm not sure that I have the program. There wasn't a name installed for Kcommander with the other applications or file managers. No icons. No sign of Kcommander anywhere. How do I know if Kcommander really is installed? Do I need to run any special commands to launch or activate it? Please advise. Thanks. Vince

KDE 3.1 on 8.1, yet again

Assuming that I ever get enough of KDE 3.1 onto my system, what needs to be changed in order for 3.1 to start, rather than 3.0.x?? Is it necessary to edit an X file (which one?) to point to a new version of kdm? Or is the apt-get update/upgrade process supposed to replace the earlier kdm with a newer version? I pointed at every repository that people have mentioned recently and told apt-get to get started. 18 hours later, it finished, with a summary that said (of 1100 packages...) the KDE3.1 packages had been "held back". So, I ran it again... and got some more additions (probably packages that had been added to repositories while my system was doing the big download), and still the KDE stuff was "held back". So, I got tired of that and fired up synaptic. Then I just kept pressing buttons until the program stopped complaining (i.e., fixing or removing broken packages), which eventually left the KDE3.1 stuff... and some more stray packages that had krept into the lists while I had been playing with synaptic. So, with no more complaints visible, I told synaptic to "Proceed". It did. A couple of hours later, it finished with an error message or two, but they did not seem to mention KDE3 packages specifically. So, I shut down and restarted. Old kdm came up. Hmm. I selected my normal login, selected "KDE" from the list, gave it my password and KDE... 3.0.x started. Well, it got as far as "Loading Desktop", and then just sat there. So, I opened a console ( [Ctrl][Alt][F1], went to run-level 3, went back to run-level 5, and started GNOME, instead. Gnome works fine, despite having had hundreds of its packages updated during the general assault. KDE does not. I even opened KMail in GNOME, and it worked. Where do I go from here? /kevin

Hi, on the weekend I updated my KDE from 3.0.5 to 3.1 on my SuSE Linux 7.3. I am very amazed, that it is not possible to play midi-files wether in kmid nor in kmidi. The configuration-dialog does not present any selection! The hardware is still running, because I can play midi-files with playmidi! I use a Soundblaster AWE 32. And the read tells me to compile the sources by myself, if the rpm-package makes problems, because it's not compiled with AWE-support :-( I tried to compile the src-rpm package, but the resulting file was not able to deal with my soundcard, too! KDE3.1 Kmail hangs when when linking to url

On SuSE8.1 Kmail, if I click on a url in body of message a dialog comes up indicating that it is starting a browser but then no browser and Kmail hangs. I have tried it with and without a browser running with same results. Must kill the process to recover. Rarely it works but most often it hangs. Have been using Opera as my browser for years. Problem started on upgrade to 3.1 Any suggestions? TIA richard

KDE 3.1 Suse 8.1

Hello everybody, I got Suse 8.1 and wanted to install KDE 3.1. However, as the new packages are not yet available with Yast2 Update I got the RPMs from kde.org meant for Suse 8.1. I ran into several problems, for example no matter how often I installed the multimedia-devel RPM YAst did not notice it and kept its 3.0.3. Another thing is that there does not seem to be a kdemultimedia rpm for the 3.1 release but Yast shows one for 3.0.3, thus I cannot update it should I uninstall it? The kdeaddons-konqueror rpm is not recognised by Yast after installing it and the 3.0.3 is still shown as being installed. This actually happens to quite a lot of KDE3.1's rpms. After re-installing Suse I got konstructor to do the KDE 3.1 install which got me KDE 3.1 running but no Yast, so this is no option. What am I doing wrong? should I first download all KDE3.1 rpms, use Yast to uninstall all of KDE3 and then install 3.1? How did you do it when upgrading to 3.1? Konqueror > Install using Yast...? Kate - No files? (KDE 3.1)

Hey all, Okay, upgraded to KDE 3.1 on my SuSE 8.1 system. Kate is a much-used program for me. But the 3.1 version seems to not want to show any files! What I mean is in the left-side Selector, where you can browse directories and open files from there by clicking on them. It shows Directories, I can move in and out of directories with no problem. But no files in the directories are showing, just subdirectories if any. Is this an issue, or do I have selective blindness that blocks viewing actual files? No files of any kind are showing. I've tried all the various settings for it (Short View/Detailed View/Separate Directories/Show Hidden Files) and no files show with anything. Only way to open files is to click "Open File" and use the open file popup to open files one at a time. Thanks, Joe

"kups" not working since kde 3.1 upgrade

Since upgrading my SuSE 8.1 system with the rpms from ftp.kde.org, kups has stopped working for users and root. When I try to start it from a shell, I see this error: kcontrol: ERROR: Module System/printmgr not found! However, when I search for printmgr.desktop, I find I have two of them: /etc/opt/kde3/share/applnk/SuSE/Settings/System/printmgr.desktop /opt/kde3/share/applnk/Settingsmenu/printmgr.desktop But they are different, and both seem to be older than they should be: ls -l /etc/opt/kde3/share/applnk/SuSE/Settings/System/printmgr.desktop /opt/kde3/share/applnk/Settingsmenu/printmgr.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8264 Sep 28 11:22 /etc/opt/kde3/share/applnk/SuSE/Settings/System/printmgr.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8976 Nov 18 05:14 /opt/kde3/share/applnk/Settingsmenu/printmgr.desktop Has anyone else run into this problem, and is there a solution? KDE 3.1 and SMB://

I upgraded to KDE3.1 using the SuSE 8.1 rpm's. Now when I try browsing out to any SMB, FTP, FISH, etc... shares all I get is a path like "lan://localhost/pc.domain.net/SMB" and konqueror does not change to "smb://pc.domain.net/" like it should. I reran the LISA setup a few times, but no luck. Any help would be great. thanks bjz

Kpilot needs lib

Hi all, When installing kdepim3-kpilot from the 3.1 files, I found it needed a lib that wasn't included with any of the new files. I believe it was a libpisock.so.8.0 library file. I looked on the SuSE 8.1 discs and find it is included in the pilot-link rpm file there, but of course that is an older version which won't work. Anyone got this worked out yet or a clue to finding the file for the new kdepim3-kpilot files? Addressbook in KDE 3.1

Besides others, I currently try to have my addresses back in KAB. My addressbook-file has been stored in /home/ce/.kde/share/apps/kabaddressbook.kab until the update. Now it seems that in KDE 3.1 the addressbook is stored as /home/ce/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf But when I call the addressbook, my further entries from KDE 3.0.5 haven't been imported, and I cannot find any possibility to do the import manually, whether directly in kab nor in the control center. Kmail and "reply to" an html message.

Hi, I just install KDE 3.1. When I use Kmail and try to reply to an html message, it quote the source code of the message and not only the letters. Dear all. If you would like to see Macromedia ShockWave Player please read on. A couple of days ago I contacted Macromedia regarding a Macromedia Shockwave Player for Linux (they have already made a Flash Player available). I requested them to build a Shockwave Player for linux and this was their response: ----------- Hi Jarl, Thank you for writing Macromedia Technical Support. The best thing to do would be to fill out the Feature Request form here: http://www.macromedia.com/support/email/wishform/ and have other Linux users do the same. The engineers view the wishlist regularly and would consider porting the player to Linux if enough users request for it. We hoped this has helped.
