kde 3.1 causes applications to crash and icons to be not shown
Hi there, I've downloaded KDE 3.1 final RPMs for SuSE 8.1 from the kde web site, and after exerincing the same trouble (that sill remains) those from the suse.com ftp site (supplementary-dir). I then had the situation that my user still showed kde 3.0-design, but root was obviously seeing keramik already. I then used the control center and the desktop-settings-wizard (einrichtungsassistent) respectively to mirate my user to keramik. These "troubles" have three facets: 1) -I don't see all the icons, i.e. i see a blank space where log off and lock should be 2) -Almost every start of a program (e.g. konqueror) tells me "kdecore (KLocale): WARNING: found no definition of PluralForm for de" 2) -Far more important: applications keep crashing. This does for example affect (kde 3.1's) konqueror as soon as i start to download a file, or kate as soon as i click on the "open" button. Kopete does not start any more, although i updated it to 0.51 when it started sigserving at start. Can anybody help me and/or does anybody know about those problems? Thanks a lot in advance, Jochen Attached: Kate and Kopete backtrace Kate backtrace: (no debugging symbols found)...(no debugging symbols found)... Hi Jochen! You should use the translation rpms from the same location where you got your kde3.1 rpms. kopete doesn't come with kde3.1, it's not part of any kde core package, it comes in a seperate rpm. Look for it on your system using
rpm -qf `which kopete` and you will find, that it is a seperate rpm.
I'm sure, that this package is not up-to-date and you have installed this package with an older version of KDE, so it cannot work with the new KDE. Then you have to get a newer version of kopete which is compiled for your KDE3.1. Look around at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/ or one of its mirrors Greets, Daniel
Hi Daniel,

Well, actually in the i18n (interna....) directory there seem to be packages for koffice, only. AsI also though of this, i installed the german koffice-localisation just to see if there is any change. It wasn't. i'm afraid.

You're right, sorry, i expressed myself wrong: I did get it in a separate RPM, which was anyway in the applications dir of what I suspected to be the kde upgrade.

Okay, I see. You have SuSE 8.1. I don't know why there are no i18n rpms there, but I think, the ones in ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/latest/SuSE/noarch/ should do the trick.

Hmmm, sounds like another packaging problem by SuSE. I haven't seen such problems with my update on SuSE 7.3, so I'm a little bit puzzled.... If you need kopete desperately, then fetch the src.rpm and try to rebuild it. You'll need some kde-devel packages too, the kdebase3-devel, kdelibs3-devel and kdenetwork3-devel should be all you need, but I don't know for sure.
Anyway, thanks,
Anyway? If one way doesn't work, there is always another one.... ;) Greets, Daniel

They seem to work, thanks a lot. That error's gone but I'm afraid the more severe remain.

Well, no, thanks, i don't need it desperately...if it were only kopete, I could live with a crash, but kate and konqueror-crashes make me think of a really unstable system.
Anyway? If one way doesn't work, there is always another one.... ;)
Well, not always, but maybe the "other way" is more often so straining (than having no other way at all) that it's easier to stay where you are or go back a bit and search for an easier route. Is the way back another way? bye, Jochen

That's every man's own choice. But not mine. I always wanted to know why s.th. doesn't work and try to fix it. Till now I succeeded. I made my own qt3.1 package with font antialiasing support for SuSE 7.3 etc.pp. But this always depends on how many time you are willing to spent etc.
Konqueror now tells me "bitBlt: Cannot bitBlt to device
This sounds to me like a problem with your X Server (wrong / buggy graphic driver)... What graphic card do you use? Nvidia? If this is true, then it would explain, why your crashes are not in one specific app, but in more apps and noone can reproduce them....
and mcop waring: user defined sigal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding" instead of found no Pluralform for whatsoever.
This is only an informational message. Greets, Daniel

Bye Jochen Hi,
I don't know where the new locale files are. It appears SuSE did not produce any with the initial release. If any body knows where they can be downloaded from I would be interested. Regarding the crashes you are having, have you tried running the command from the command line in an xterm. You generally get reasonable error messages which indicate where the problem is. Also after you did the update did you remove the /tmp/kde-<username> /tmp/ksocket-<username> /tmp/mcop-<username> ~/.mcop ( for each user) directories before restarting kde. If not I suggest you exit kde and remove them, they will be recreated again on restart of kde. They can cause a number of problems and crashes if they are not updated. There is another problem with konqueror which can cause it to crash when run as root (Super User). The only way I have found to resolve the problem is to turn off the preview of "files", which is by default turned on. Settings ---> Configure Konqueror --> Previews -->file (disable) or via the Control Centre when logged in as root. Yeah, that was where I got the PluralForm from.

Thanks for this, i removed them but i'm running a konstruct-build for my kde right now and i'm scared to kill/restart the X Server at this moment. I'll see after konstruct has finished. thanks and bye Jochen
