Hello all,
Just received my copy of SuSE 9.2 Pro and completed a clean install on my
Toshiba Satellite 2435 laptop. For whatever reason, the laptop's touchpad was
not detected/installed correctly. Using the laptop has become extremely
difficult. The mouse opens *almost* every window and app that it trails over
and hardware clicking/tapping doesn't work. I don't recall what driver I've
used in the past with SuSE and this laptop--truth is, I never looked.
Currently I'm using the generic PS/2 Mouse (Aux-Port) driver as indicated in
the Hardware section of YaST's Control Center and the touchpad is somewhat
functional, albeit with irritating side effects. With previous versions of
SuSE the touchpad was detected/configured correctly and without my
intervention. Anyone using SuSE 9.2 with a similar machine?
Searches on SuSE's Support Portal turned up zero articles related to ALPS
Touchpad devices.
This is a snippet of dmesg, related to the mouse/touchpad:

Any time I open Konqueror with either 'file:/' or with the root folder
in the tree view panel, it locks up. It doesn't matter whether I do it
as a user or root. When I close the Konqueror window with the close
button, after a 10 or 15 seconds I get a dialog box with the following:
Window with title "craig - Konqueror" is not responding. This window
belongs to application konqueror (PID=7087, hostname=localhost).
Do you wish to terminate this application? (All unsaved data in this
application will be lost.)
Any ideas what might be the problem? Where would I look for the config
files and log files for Konqueror?
Thanks,
Craig
After hosing my kernel I did a complete re-install of 9.2 on my
laptop. I then ran an apt dist-upgrade of the system, then logged in
to tweak everything.
For some reason, sounds don't work. They did before I re-installed.
And they don't work in root either. If I test the sound system via
the Control Center, I hear the sounds. But in no apps do they work,
and the KDE system messages don't work. If I go into Konsole and play
something from the command line using
play some_sound.wav
this also works. I changed the sound settings to use an external
player (the play command), but still no sounds.
I deleted the knotify files, logged out and back in, but still
nothing. The kdm log shows nothing wrong. And everything worked
before I had to re-install
Any ideas?
Suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Hello all.
Just finished a clean install of SuSE 9.2 Pro on an older box I had lying
around (PIII 800MHz, 690Mb SDRAM, 40GB Maxtor HDD, old ATI Rage XL graphics).
I had SuSE 9.2 running on this machine a few months ago when 9.2 was first
released. For some strange reason, I am unable to install the MS TT Font
patch (fetchmsttfonts.sh) either via YOU or from command line. The patch just
hangs during the download and never finishes the install process.
For example: (As SU - from command line)
linux:/tmp # ./fetchmsttfonts.sh
./fetchmsttfonts.sh: line 1: -----BEGIN: command not found
./fetchmsttfonts.sh: line 2: Hash:: command not found
note: No proxy is used. Please set the environment variable "http_proxy"
note: to your favorite proxy, if you want to use a proxy for the download.
note:
note: bash: export http_proxy="http://proxy.provider.de:3128/"
note: tcsh: setenv http_proxy "http://proxy.provider.de:3128/"
EULA:
Fetching ... done
andale32.exe:
Fetching ...
The script just hangs when attempting to fetch the fonts regardless of the
amount of time I wait. From within YOU the download hangs as well. I've tried
getting the patch from various ftp and http sites both in the US and Europe,
but no go. I even tried altering the fetchmsttfonts.sh shell script to point
to different download locations for the fonts but still, no go.
All suggestions/hints are welcome.
TIA

Well, I bought an ATI Radeon 9550 video card, installed it, installed SuSE 9.2
and went to ATI to get the drivers for it. After a couple of false starts, I
got the 64 bit AMD driver and installed it according to the instructions
provided on their web site. It basically made X die a horrible death which I
ended up recovering from by reinstalling 9.2 again.
What is frustrating about this is that I emailed ATI twice about this using
their "Customer Care" process. I have received two automated responses and a
sum total of zero beyond that. So, my questions are as follows:
1. Does anyone know how to actually get help from ATI? I was given the
impression that they were more sensitive to the needs of the Linux community,
but that's not what I'm seeing in their (non-existent) customer support. My
other machine has an Nvidia card and I've never had a problem with the
drivers for it (admittedly under SuSE 9.0 and I did have to endure the kernel
module build).
2. Has anyone had experience with the 9550 and SuSE 9.2? Any suggestions on a
driver configuration that works? If anyone is interested I have a file that
contains the error info from startx.
Thanks for the help.

Hi, I have a SuSE 9.2 pro linux box running with KDE as my default session, I
have particular trouble with a GNOME 2.x application: wxDesigner. When I run
this application from a console the application runs beautifully, it gets the
the theme specified using gtk-qt-engine. The problem start when I add an
application button for this application to the taskbar, the button is created
and the application is launched everytime that I click on the button. The
problem is that the theme is taken by the application so when I start playing
with the wxDesigner it crashes. The reason why is crashing is that is not
getting the themes as specified by the gtk-qt-engine. Any Idea why this
behavior? Any suggestion how to fix the problem?
BTW, the same happen if I launch the application using the Alt+F2 sequence (it
crashes)

Hi there,
I have backed up the home folder of my pc to some tar.gz files. The files
are 3.6GB altogether. I burned them on a DVD using K3b. K3b debug logs
don't show nothing wrong but the actual size of the files when I browse
to the DVD is only 38MB! Could anybody please help me to figure out what's
going on?
My k3b is 0.11.12 using KDE 3.2.1 on SuSE 9.1 Pro.
