I've been finishing the branding work for 11.3 this week, and have been
documenting how to do it as I go. The first draft is attached. Comments? If
I was hit by a bus tomorrow, could you do openSUSE 11.4 branding? (Lubos
doesn't need to answer that ;)).

Howdy all:
I have two computers, a desktop and laptop running 11.3, kde 4.5.5,
nvidia 256.53 (have to use this driver to avoid the floating point error
that causes all clock widgets to crash with kde 4.5).
I tried updating both computers to kde 4.6 I used the following repos:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.3/http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_46_openSUS…
Did zypper up on one zypper dup on another to the kde:release:46 repo.
Both updates failed big time, and I have reverted back to kde 4.5.x,
below are the issues on both computers after the update:
1) No window controls, restore, close minimize, title bar ......
2) no keyboard input in any window, within kde, kb works fine from tty1
......
3) Networkmanager would not load into system tray
4) kde starts on occasion with only the main panel with task bar system
tray etc, but black screen I'm assuming plasma has crashed.
5) main panel will not allow changes, even if widgets unlocked, the
little upside down like apostrophe does not appear and can not change panel
6) if using the newer nvidia driver 260.19.36, plasma loops and
generates numerous seg fault messages.
Below are a few things I tried before reverting back to kde 4.5.5
1) remove /tmp/kde-user temp directory, user of course replaced with my
user name
2) deleted .kde4 folder, for logged in user
3) update to nvidia current drivers (this did nothing but bring back the
floating point errors), then back to nvidia 256.53 driver.
Any ideas suggestion greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Tony

knutclient is a client program using nut (Network UPS Tools) that
allows to monitor an UPS' state and to send commands to it.
It used to be based on KDE3 (and an old version is part of the KDE3
repository), but it is now based on KDE4, so I think it should be
included in KDE:Distro:Factory.
The official site is http://www.knut.prynych.cz .
I have packaged it in my home repository:
https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=knutclient&project=home:pol…
What do you think about this?

I recently upgraded my openSUSE 11.3 to KDE 4.6. I'm particularly
interested in using desktop search etc., so the index created by Strigi
is required (at least this is what i think...). After the upgrade, of
course, the index had to be created, so i was patient. Some time later i
rebooted the system after having checked that the Strigi indexer was
indeed done with its work and idle.
After the reboot i noticed that Strigi once again was running and busy
indexing my huge media folder.
Is this behavior normal? I'm 100% sure that no files were touched in the
media folder, so i don't see any reason why Strigi should re-index the
folder. Could it be that the index is not persistent and does not
survive a system reboot?
The running indexer does not particularly slow down my system, but still
i'd like to know if there are some settings that i may need to adjust so
that the index survives a restart.
Thanks!

Hi all,
Can we see "the panel height showing the wrong pixel value issue" as
resolved for 11.4 RC1.

A new phonon version is now out:
http://apachelog.wordpress.com/2011/01/21/phonon-family-4-4-4/
This part was particularly significant in my opinion:
"Last but not least we changed the default priorities of backends on
Linux. To get the best experience you should now either use GStreamer
or VLC. The former preferred choice Xine is as of now considered
unmaintained and should not be used anymore."
The openSUSE version, however, defaults to xine, and the VLC version
is not available from the openSUSE or KDE:Distro:Factory repositories
at all.
I know that there was some talk about moving the phonon-VLC backend
and the stripped-down VLC components from playground to
KDE:Distro:Factory for 11.4, but I think this makes it more pressing.
The way they mention indicates they think it is ready for use.
Either way, should we change the default backend to gstreamer (or VLC
if it is moved)?

The problem is similar to above with fonts. One of the nice things about the
way openSUSE used to be was 10pt for most desktop fonts. Remembering it's
easier to make too big fonts smaller than the converse, now that it's been
shrunk to 9pt, the first thing that needs fixing after a new install is the
fonts, as everything that needs to be configured in KDE on first instance
depends on it. I'd rather fix whatever file in /usr/share/kde4 controls them
so that every new login has big enough to start with. Where is that? Is
there any way to use YaST to do it?

I now know why I've stayed away from maintaining gstreamer. It's members
are strewn across from multimedia:libs to kde. I'm trying to get the <
11.4 members to build, first problem was no gobject-introspection was
new enough, I aggregated it from GNOME:Factory but no 11.2 rpms so I've
linked it. Next somebody put pkg-config() s in the Buildrequires of a
few packages without a suse_version conditional to take care of 11.2,
see opensuse-kde mail subject "Gstreamer update (opensuse+packman) break
pulseaudio on 11.2 / 4.4.4 Stable" this is when I discover
python-gstreamer lives in kde.
My proposal is take gstreamer out of multimedia and (I see GNOME:Factory
already has it) move it to where somebody cares about it in kde.
ATM I feel like the only multimedia maintainer, I'm getting an ulcer and
I don't get paid.
Thanks

Hi,
Every time I start kde, turn on computer or re-log, the first that is happens
is the message:
Application: KDE Daemon (kdeinit4), signal: Segmentation fault
I tried to send the bug report, but other message is showed tell me that
cannot comunicate with kded.
I tried to delete .kde4 to see what happen, but the problem remain.
There is something I can do to solve this problem? I was using KDE 4.6
The full bug report is following:
