Hi All !
(esp. Dirk & others) - whom I spoke to yesterday about KDE3/KDE4.
Now, I'm running latest openSUSE 11.0 (64-bit) and latest KDE 4.1.
What problems are still left in KDE4.x compared to KDE3.x ?
1. Using the taskbar - area near start button (kicker in KDE3 terms),
there are icons to quick-start applications.
I cannot add anything here, not by dragging from Start Menu (like
Windows XP), and cannot right-click to add new
application from start menu (like KDE3). This is very serious
usability trouble.
Only options available: (right-clicking on Konqueror 4 icon near start menu)
"add widgets"
"add panel"
must also have:
"add application" - either by manually typing command, or by selecting
from Start Menu.
1.a. Speaking of applets/widgets: "quicklaunch" for KDE4 needs to be
integrated as another widget into KDE, instead of being third-party
add-on.
2. Task-bar:
It has single level. In KDE3 or Windows XP I can have multi-level
"thick" taskbar, not so in KDE4.
In KDE4 taskbar can be "thick", but it will still be one-level.
This is not configurable via "Panel Settings".
3. "Show Desktop" / "Minimize all windows": (aka "show dashboard" in KDE4 terms)
- again - in KDE3 and Windows XP the "show desktop" can be used to
minimize all windows,
while I still see and can use the taskbar for windows reorganization,
while in KDE4 clicking on show desktop I can only see desktop and
start new application from desktop, but I cannot access taskbar and/or
start menu.
I use this very frequently, when I want to start new task on my
desktop, without fully ending previous task.
4. (subjective-opinion) Theming - Windows decorations - both "Ozone"
and "Oxygen" are ugly compared to KDE3/SUSE windows decorations.
BTW: Very good windows decorations were in the far past - SUSE Linux 9.1 (KDE3).
Maybe we can replicate those, as on option (or default) into KDE4/SUSE 11.1 ?
5. Screensavers are lacking (besides "Black screen")
6. All tray icons have no transparent background.
I mean - even native tray icons from KDE3 and KDE4.

Hi all,
I just upgraded from SUSE 10.1 to openSUSE 11.0. I've noticed that sensors is
now at version 3.0.2-4.1, using lm_sensors 3.0.2. How do I display
information from this new version of sensors, using ksysguard, or otherwise?
The following message suggests that a patch has been added to KDE 3.5.9
http://lists-archives.org/kde-devel/15569-ksysguard-to-support-lmsensor-3-x…
I'm currently using ksysguard 1.2.0 with KDE 3.5.10 and cannot see the
sensors. Maybe the patch is broken?
The problem apparently still occurs in Gentoo:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=211308
and Arch:
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/8776
This lm-sensors web page
http://www.lm-sensors.org/wiki/Download
has a pacth to ksysgiard 3.5.8. I don't know if it works or if it has been
incorporated into KDE 3.5.10.
I upgraded from 10.1 to 11.0 by using the update method rather than by
installing openSUSE on a freash partition. Should this have made any
difference? I don't want to reinstall just to check if this problem is fixed.
Is there any way I can check ksysguard and sensors using a live-CD?
Best, Paul

Why didn't I see this written about extensively? Bah, it was probably there
and I missed it.

I thought I would start with a posting here to see what feedback I might
get. I searched KDE bugs but did not find this particular issue and if
the consensus here in this news group is that I should report this as a
bug I will...
I am running SuSE 10.3 and have been working for quite a while now
trying to track down a problem that starts to occurs near the end of
boot up and then occurring intermittently thereafter. The problem I am
experiencing is freezes where the GUI becomes unresponsive for several
minutes at a time, or it becomes extremely sluggish. This freeze always
occurs near the end of booting up and each of the final steps will take
several minutes to report that it as completed. As X becomes active and
the KDE desktop comes up this process will take upwards of 15 minutes to
complete. After a while the KDE desktop will become intermittently quite
responsive for a bit, then will become quite unresponsive again for a bit...
I have tried removing all services except those required by X11 without
success, and am now going through log files to see what complaints are
showing up there and trying to clean them up. I have looked at TOP and
VMSTAT to see if I have a process taking up all the CPU time or am
having swapping troubles. Again so far without success. I then decided
to take a look at KDE itself to see what I might try and there I learned
about a bunch of services that KDE is running and so I tried to stop
them. This had no effect on this problem either.
Next I found there is something called a Session Manager and when I
tried to open it, it crashes! So I now suspect I should get that working
to see if this may be the cause of my GUI unresponsiveness. The KDE
Crash reporter gave me a walkback which I have included below. Any one
got any ideas on what this means? Thanks in advance for any help offered
and please remember I am NOT a Linux guru by any means... So if you have
a suggestion for me to try, please don't use any advance terms or expect
me to have a lot of detailed knowledge about Linux and its toolset...
Marc Chamberlin
Attached is the stack walkback from the crash when I tried to open the
Session Manger found in Personal Settings -> KDE Components -> Session
Manager Something that caught my eye in this walkback is that there
are references to the ATI fglrx driver. I am using the ATI Radeon x1600
video card with the fglrx driver, could something be amiss with this driver?

I've been updating a lot of packages with yast. I have no new problems, but
I'm looking for some information about upcoming solutions to old, continuing
ones.
After launching any part of yast that has anything to do with package
management, I have to wait around five minutes before I can do something
(which is sometimes to change one small thing). I once saw it suggested that
yast be changed to use rdiff or something to only collect the changes in the
repository rather than downloading the entire list. Has anyone using 11.1
alpha or Factory noticed any change?
Also, I set over a hundred packages to update from one repository and while I
was doing it, they must have updated the packages, because now those hundred-
plus packages are no longer found on that server. Okay, it happens. But over
one hundred times, I had to press the space bar to get rid of one error box,
then hit alt+S to skip the package. Each time. Again, has anyone noticed any
better handling of situations like this in any newer version of yast?
I'm just curious. I'm still using 10.3 and don't know if it'd be worth it to
install 11.0 with 11.1 coming out, but then, I don't know if it's worth
waiting for 11.1.

I have about 2 weeks before my bill gates white trooper / son comes back home.
Before he comes back I want to have a killer suse laptop for the wife, da
missus and I just decided that she does not need a desktop, a laptop with a
choice between land line and wifi would be perfectly acceptable!
the problem is that the laptop is an aged hp job, the model is an hp pavilion,
ze1000 series, with an 80gb hard drive, 512mb ram and an amd xp-1500+ cpu.
presently, the laptop is a dual boot setup, 32 bit suse 10.3 is the default,
windoze xp is the other choice in the grub menu. all that will be wiped out
for the *one* os to be freshly installed. Currently, the standard 10.3 suse
feels *a lot more sluggish* on the laptop than the xp and no, it is not
beagle, the dreaded dog was never allowed in the system at install! so, i am
asking for help in installing a fast suse system. should I go to 11.0?
should i try something like knoppyx? if i still do suse, what can i keep out
of the installation in order to gain speed? should i abandon kde and try
somethinglike xfce?
expected useage would be email, web browsing, book writing(oo), vlc /
mplayer / dvd playing multimedia, perhaps some pdf file creation.
any ideas will be welcome!

Hi,
I'm using the KDE from KDE:KDE4:Factory:{Desktop,Extra-Apps}. I'm not sure,
what's the best bugzilla for that build of KDE? The bugs.kde.org, or Novell's
bugzilla? I'm asking because there's some patches and fixes in openSUSE, which
may not be in upstream version ...
Best regards
