I've had the same problem, too. It also happens with knotes 2.2x
under kde 3.01. I hope you get an answer on this.

Hi ...
Can anyone suggest a (free) downloadable virus-scan product for Suse 7.3?
I think my distro is passing around the klez virus ...

Hi, guys ...
Here is a mini-HOWTO describing my experience in installing F-PROT.
Obtaining and Installing the Product
--------------------------------------------
Go to "http://www.f-prot.com/download/getfplinfree.html". Select the
download site and type of download; I selected the rpm install. Konqueror
offered to install the package using "Package Manager", and I let it go
ahead. The files wind up being installed under "/usr/local/f-prot".
Configuring the Product
-----------------------------
The product installs with two scripts: "f-prot.sh" and "check-updates.sh".
"f-prot.sh" runs the virus scanner, while "check-updates.sh" checks for and
downloads updated virus signature files (which all end in a ".DEF"
extension; there are 3 of these). Basically, the product is ready to go at
this point, so what I did from here on was some local tweaking.
I wanted "f-prot.sh" and "check-updates.sh" to be run by cron at specific
times each day. In particular, I wanted "f-prot.sh" to write a report file
in my home directory, but the problem is that cron runs as root, so the
report file would not be readable from my userid unless I got into
superuser. So, what I did was write a "wrapper" script around "f-prot.sh"
to chown the report file after it was created so that I could read it. I
called this script "vscan", and it looks like this:
#!/bin/sh
#
# This is a shell script to invoke the F-Prot OnDemand Scanner for
Linux.
# It creates a report file called "f-prot.rep" in the subdirectory of
# "/home" corresponding to the specified userid. It then chowns this
# report file so that the user can look at it without being superuser.
#
/usr/local/f-prot/f-prot / -report=/home/$1/f-prot.rep
chown $1:users /home/$1/f-prot.rep
I then did a "crontab -e" and created a pair of entries that look like
this:
30 19 * * * /usr/local/f-prot/check-updates.sh -cron -quiet
30 07 * * * /usr/local/f-prot/vscan bill
When "vscan" runs, $1 in the script is replaced by "bill", so the report
gets written to (in this case) "/home/bill/f-prot.rep". So this way, at
7:30am every morning, f-prot is invoked to do the virus scan, and at 7:30pm
every evening, I check to see if there are any new virus definition files
to download. f-prot, when it runs, tells you the date and time of the
virus signature files it's using, so you know indirectly that
"check-updates.sh" is running.
The only other thing I did was to define an icon on the KDE desktop to open
the report file with "kwrite"; this way, all I have to do to check the
virus scan log is to click on the icon.

Bill Stephens

I did that and recognized that the link .Xresources -> .Xdefaults was owned by root,
also group root. But could that possibly crash the whole system?
Funny thing is that it really does not happen as root, but only as a normal user.
So if anyone has any other recommendations, I'd be very very happy...
Thanx in advance,
Sebastian

Hi,
resend, asthis never showed up on the list. The same happened on a
second system. It was not the SuSE update, but the KDE 3.0.2 images.
This time I checked when it happened :-)

Hi,
today I installed the latest online update for SuSE-8.0 and
additionaly upgraded to KDE-3.0.2. Since then the scrensaver locks me
out. Logging in to the console or via KDE login works OK. Just the
screensaver. Calling "kcheckpass" manually yields:
mknoblau@knobi:~> kcheckpass
Password:
authentication failure for user mknoblau [uid 15833]
mknoblau@knobi:~>
This is found in /var/log/messages:
Jul 29 15:40:27 knobi kcheckpass[1237]: pam_unix2:
pam_sm_authenticate() called
Jul 29 15:40:27 knobi kcheckpass[1237]: pam_unix2: username=[mknoblau]
Jul 29 15:40:27 knobi kcheckpass[1237]: pam_unix2: wrong password,
return PAM_AUTH_ERR
Any idea what has gone wrong?
Thanks
Martin

Is there a way to make KDE recognize screen savers that are loaded with other
desktops. I know that there are more screensavers on my system, but they
don't show up in the KDE Control Center's screensaver list.
Darrell Cormier
Hi,
I have upgraded my system (Suse 8.0) and now need to do a reinstall. What do I
save (via cdrecord perhaps) to make sure that I don't need to redo the
update?
Thanks.
Michael.

confirm that this is a bug or that I am confused beyound all belief?

I'm trying to enable remote kdm-login between two machines, tor and oden.
oden is running 8.0 and kdebase3-3.0.2-45 while tor is running 7.3 and
kdebase3-3.0.2-7.
It doesn't seem to work.
I din't see any other hosts or user@host coming up in kdm and logging in as
Anders@tor or Anders@oden fails.
They have exactly the same coupling between user-names and UIDs and tor
nfs-exports /home to oden.
I have edited the following files thus:
1. /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc thus:
---------------snip-------------------
[Xdmcp]
Enable=true
---------------snip-------------------
2. /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess
---------------snip-------------------
%hostlist oden #on tor and vice versa on oden
* CHOOSER %hostlist
---------------snip-------------------
3. /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config
---------------snip-------------------
#DisplayManager.requestPort :0
---------------snip-------------------
Furthermore I have restarted kdm on both machines.
What have I missed or done wrong ?

Hi everyone,
I'm using the 7.2 release, almost fully updated, and now I've XFree86
4.2.0 and KDE 3.0.1 (binaries). As I want to improve the speed of KDE (I
have a i686 plattform) and install the same time the 3.0.2 release, I have
downloaded the .spm and installed it. What's my surprise when I do a
"./configure" and it fails.
The matter is this happens with every application designed for KDE 3.x.
For example, with caitoo 2.0Beta1, this is the output from ./configure.
alberto@linux:/usr/src/packages/SOURCES/caitoo-0.6.6 > ./configure

Any idea?
BTW, I have installed these packages and versions :
autoconf-2.5
automake-1.5
gcc-2.95.2
g++-2.95.2
and almost everything, though, that KDE3 needs to compile succesfully. Do
I need another package, or 'tune' anything to get it?
