Hi there, I've been using OpenSuse 11.2 for some time now, I am very pleased with its Firefox-KDE integration. I've written a Firefox extension to complement that integration. The extension enable Firefox to use kwallet as password store, instead of using internal password manager. I would be pleased if you take a look at it, test it make suggestions. [opensuse-kde] Faster KDE:Qt/KKFD rebuilds

Ho ho ho, since everybody working on KDE packaging have been good this year, you have been given faster rebuilds in KDE repos. Happy Christmas :). As some might have noticed when updating a KDE repo to a newer KDE SC version, it takes quite a while for it to rebuild, especially if Qt or kdelibs are triggered for rebuild. In fact, originally it looked roughly like this ('X' in KMail for non-proportional fonts is helpful; times are just rough measures and depend on OBS's mood, but they should match at least relatively): libqt4 1:00 (+1:00) -> libqt4-devel-doc 1:50 (+0:50) -> qt-creator 2:00 (+0:10) -> automoc4, soprano, strigi, phonon 2:20 (+0:20) -> kdelibs4 3:40 (+1:20) -> kdepimlibs4 4:00(+0:20) -> kdebase4-workspace 5:00 (+1:00) -> kdesdk4 5:30 (+0:30) -> kdevplatform 5:50 (+0:20) -> python-kde4 6:35 (+0:45) -> kdeutils4 6:55 (+0:20) -> kdepim4-runtime 5:20 (+0:20) -> kdepim4 6:30 (+1:10) -> kdegraphics4 4:05 (+0:25) -> koffice2 5:55 (+1:50) Yes, that's it, rebuilding whole of KKFD takes 5 hours if you get lucky, 7 hours if libqt4 needs a rebuild. The winner is kdeutils4. Well, actually it's not so bad anymore, as there were many unnecessary dependencies on kdebase4-workspace-devel and I've already removed them. So kdesdk4 builds directly after kdepimlibs4 and kdeutils4 is down to 6 hours, but still the winner. But the kdevplatform dependency on kdesdk4 was on kompare, and that's been "temporarily" disabled upstream for 3 months. So now kdeutils4 is at 5:30, matching kdepim4 and some other packages have a real dependency on kdebase4- workspace-devel and so they are stuck to be built after 5 hours. Another problem was a long KDE:Qt rebuild, and the aggregate in KKFD seems to stop being blocked only after all of KDE:Qt has been rebuilt (even packages that are actually not aggregated, for whatever reason). The most interesting problem in KDE:Qt is that the Qt libraries themselves, including WebKit, get rebuilt in every libqt4* package. Since things like qt- declarative had a dependency on libqt4-devel-doc, they needed to wait for double Qt rebuild. However, most of the libqt4-devel-doc dependencies were unnecessary, so I have removed them. Actually, the table above is not correct for the very initial state, this is after this fix, it originally took even longer. The table is for the current state, as qt-creator still has a build requirement on libqt4-devel-doc because of help generation tools. Now, that's all that has been already fixed in the repos. But I have more improvements under home:llunak:branches that I haven't committed to KDE:Qt/KKFD yet, as I'd like to get those okayed first. Changes in KDE:Qt should be moving the help generation tools from libqt4- devel-doc to libqt4-devel, where they IMO belong anyway, if apps need them for building documentation during their build. Second change should be making sure that Qt libs and WebKit are built only once. The trick is to install libqt4- devel (and libQtWebKit-devel) and symlinking them to the build dir's bin/ and lib/. It seems to work just fine. I additionally split off libqt4-webkit, in order to have libqt4-devel ready sooner for some further packages that don't require WebKit, although I'm not entirely sure it's worth it (most stuff requires WebKit anyway, and the aggregate blocks KKFD anyway). Changes in KKFD should be using final builds (i.e. KDE4_ENABLE_FINAL=1) for kdelibs4, kdepimlibs4 and kdebase4-workspace. These 3 are the biggest bottlenecks (maybe with python-kde4, but I think kdebindings4 is already troublesome enough). It needed some fixes (it seems nobody has been using that lately, maybe cmake's stupid dependency handling is to blame), but now it builds fine. Hopefully it's not a big deal to keep it that way (it's mostly just kde4_no_enable_final(<whatever>) in the subdir's CMakeLists.txt or just disabling it altogether for the package). Do you think it'd be worth it? We used to build KDE3 this way too. With all these changes, the final table should look like this: libqt4 0:30 (+0:30) -> libqt4-webkit 1:00 (+0:30) -> libqt4-devel-doc 1:20 (+0:20) -> automoc4, soprano, strigi, phonon 1:40 (+0:20) -> kdelibs4 2:00 (+0:20) -> kdepimlibs4 2:10 (+0:10) -> kdebase4-workspace 2:30 (+0:20) -> kdevplatform 2:30 (+0:20) -> python-kde4 3:15 (+0:45) -> kdeutils4 3:35 (+0:20) -> kdepim4-runtime 2:30 (+0:20) -> kdepim4 3:40 (+1:10) -> kdegraphics4 2:25 (+0:25) -> koffice2 4:15 (+1:50) The winner is now koffice2 with 4:15 hours, with no obvious dependency to improve, but it doesn't get updated together with KDE SC, so koffice2 doesn't matter that much. The rest should be under 4 hours total, 2:30 in KKFD alone. [opensuse-kde] Question on the Skulpture Theme

Hi all, I'm facing some strange issues with the Skulpture theme on Opensuse 11.2. When I set the Kwin theme to Skulpture type, it gives back borders (http://www.imageping.com/show.php/60782_Skulpture.png.html). Notice the black borders on the Kontact Kwin window and also some black borders on the Dolphin window. I have special effects disabled. Now, if I turn on special effects, I do not see the borders! I've seen this problem with Chakra/Arch Linux...but strangely Mandriva 2010.0 doesn't have this problem. I'm using KDE 4.3.4 from the _43 repo. Can someone help? [opensuse-kde] KDE SC 4.3.4 in KDE:KDE4:STABLE:Desktop; soon in 11.2 online update

The KDE and maintenance teams are taking the unprecedented step of a point release update to KDE SC 4.3.4 in our 'STABLE' repository and from then as an online update to 11.2. Normally we don't do version updates in online updates, preferring to backport patches to the released version. I'll be straight with you; the impetus for doing this comes from putting 4.3.4 on an enterprise product and we don't want to maintain two 4.3 codebases, but we're confident that this is a good thing for openSUSE users, because: - 4.3.4 has 2 months' more upstream bugfixing in it, compared to 4.3.1. This includes a major Plasma performance bug fix. - 4.3.4 is the final planned release in the KDE 4.3 series and will therefore have the longest shelf life. It will be easier to apply future fixes from the KDE 4.3 branch to 4.3.4 packages than to 4.3.1 packages. - having 4.3.4 on an enterprise product gives us additional reasons (customers' money!) to fix bugs in it, benefitting openSUSE users too. - We are aware that any version update has the potential to include regressions, but: - 4.3.4 is a point release with only bugfixes and translation updates - we've seen a lot of use of the KDE:43 repo from 11.2 users without a lot more bugs - other distributions have already shipped 4.3.2 and are going to push point releases as online updates as well We have consulted the openSUSE maintenance team, who were in favour of this move. The online update will take place after a period of testing 4.3.4 on 11.2 in KDE:KDE4:STABLE:Desktop. The sole drawback to this that we're aware of is that this will be a large online update download; we hope you will agree the benefits will be worth it. Season's greetings! [opensuse-kde] Need help my text highlighting has gone

Hi, my text highlighting has stopped working in all kde apps can somebody tell me where to look without having to lose all my other configuration? I'm running 11.2 x86_64 and I updated to kde-4.3.4 recently. I don't know if that is when the highlighting disappeared because I normally suspend to disk so it could be. I've returned my system to stock 11.2 but that hasn't helped neither has any text editor settings. Wrong. that gave me a root kicker that wouldn't open anything. (Geez...how dumb can you get ?) So I did a killall as root and got rid of it. Then I switched back to user and did the "kicker" command. I saw the kicker flash up for a second and then it hid itself again. The mouse to the bottom of the page won't bring it up. So something is corrupted in that kicker config I think. I searched around and found kickerrc and changed autostart hide from true to false restartedd X and it was back. Then I set autohide again and it continues to work. Only the Lord knows why these things happen. Thanks for putting me onthe right track. [opensuse-kde] lost my taskbar

Hello SuSE people, Running 11.0 64bit with KDE3.5 While I was working with some audio files my taskbar just dissapeared. I have it set at the bottom of the screen with auto-hide. I dragged the mouse down to change to a different desktop and the task bar would not come up. Checked /var/messages and /warn. Nothing there that I could see. I have all of my application icons that I use on the taskbar/kicker. Help !!! Hi there, after the installation of OS 11.2 x86_64 and upgrade to kde4-stable repository on several machines, strangely on one of them kmail does not quote. Clicking the reply-button or pressing R on a mail brings up the composer- window without any quoted content. (however, the users signature is displayed) Bug?
