KDE-menu auto-update

Hi! I wonder if it is possible (perhaps by means of a script) to update the KDE-menu after installing some new programs via Yast2. I installed some programs from the installation-dvd right after the installation of suse 9.0, but it seems none of them was added to the suse-kde-"start program"-menu. thanks, christopher.

Hello, I lost ALL my settings including my self made desktop files, key shortcuts of KDE 3.2 and all its applications, e.g kmail (even an additional icon set is not there any longer) when I exited KDE. When exited KDE the machine froze and I had to cold start the machine. A crash can but shouldn't happen but what went wrong that I Iost ALL individual settings. I do not know much of KDEs directory structure and config files. What needs to be backupped in order to able to restore my costomization work. I almost feel backported to Win95 :-( cu Stefan

Scrollbars broken in KDE apps. Anyone else expriencing this?

I believe this is a QT 3.X issue though it may be in kdebase. Scrolling using scrollbars is broken: This existed in KDE 3.1 and is also in 3.2. Category: annoying but does not affect work. Example applications are: kmail 1.6 and konqueror 3.2.0 RPMS: kdepim3-3.2.0-8 (and earlier) qt3-3.3.0-47 (and earlier) kdebase3-3.2.0-7 (and earlier) kmail 1.6 [ from package kdepim3-3.2.0-8 ] (and earlier) konqueror 3.2.0 [ from package kdebase3-3.2.0-7 ] and earlier Problem Description: Reading a web page or an e-mail greater than a viewable page, if one grabs the down arrow control in a scrollbar and holds it, when one lets go, the page continues to scroll. Clicking on another desktop and then returning to the app stops this behavior. Otherwise the scrolling repeats the last line in the viewable area and scrolls to the bootom of the scrollbar slowly. Recreate: Bring up a page the is large in konqueror or read a long email and grab the bottom arrow of a scrollbar with the leftmost mousebutton.

Liebe Listenmitglieder, folgendes Problem: Mein Konqueror zeigt beim Öffnen einer html-Seite die deutschen Umlaute SYSTEMÜBERGREIFEND, als auch bei anderen Nutzern, die bspw. Spanisch als Default benutzen, als kyrillische Zeichen an, und dies obwohl: 1. Bei KDE zentral der Zeichensatz ISO-8859-15 angegeben ist, 2. In den Konqueror-Einstellungen dasselbe der Fall ist, 3. Als Systemsprache Deutsch, und zwar nur Deutsch angegeben ist, 4. Der Konqueror auf manuelle Veränderungen der Kodierung reagiert (z.B. japanisch oder was auch immer) - allerdings nicht auf die Einstellungen, die für die Darstellung der deutschen Umlaute geeignet sind. 5. Die Zeichensätze (sans, bzw. times) umlauttauglich sind. "Interessant" ist, daß beim Laden einer html-Seite für ca 1/2 Sekunde der richtig kodierte Text angezeigt wird, dann jedoch durch eine fette Schrift ersetzt wird, die die Umlaute wieder als kyrillische Buchstaben anzeigt. Offensichtlich habe ich irgendwann mal irgendwo rumgefummelt, aber ich weiß beim besten Willen nicht wo. Wer weiß Rat? Vielen Dank im Voraus Christopher Winkler

Remote Desktop Connection application

Dear list, I am looking for the vnc client. Not kfrb which lets someone elso control my client, I can invoke that one ok. The other way around: I want to control a remote machine via VNC. http://www.tjansen.de/krfb/ talks about a client called "Remote Desktop Connection" which I am unable to find in the menu structure. What is the command to call? BTW, I can find the X apps called vncserver and vncviewer, but I would like to run the KDE application if it is available. Sys: SuSE 8.1 with KDE 3.1.3 Kostas

Does anyone know what $XDG_DATA_DIRS should be set to so kde 3.2 doesn't throw a tail spin? I know it works when it's unset, but I need it set to something for the latest gnome to function properly.

When I try to do the YAST system upgrade and am pointed to the leo ftp site and the directory yast-source the following dependencies show up. I will spare you the entire print out. I can't figure out what to do. aas_base is available arts is behind a version I am running the bash shell I don't get it. I guess you might say I am clueless at this juncture. Any clue would be helpful. suse wallpaper

Hi, it appears that the nice SuSE login wallpaper (the one with the welcome message in different languages) has been deleted by my KDE 3.2 update... Does anybody have a location they can point me to, where I can find it ? I believe it is SuSE-kdm.jpeg... Thanks, Jan

KDE 3.1.4 -> 3.2 Update problems / missing libarts...

Hi, I tried to upgrade KDE from 3.1.4 to 3.2 on my SuSE 8.2 system using the rpm provided by SuSE, but I´m running into trouble updating kdemultimedia3-extra. Said package requires the following files, which I don´t have: libartsbuilder.so.0, libartscontrolsupport.so.1, libartsgui_idl.so.0, libartsgui_kde.so.0, libartsmidi_idl.so.0, libartsmodules.so.0, libartsmodulescommon.so.0, libartsmoduleseffects.so.0, libartsmodulesmixers.so.0, libartsmodulessynth.so.0 The libarts*-files used to be provided by the kdemultimedia package, but this is no longer the case. In my case yes, I rarely ever use yast any more, one of the reasons is that it tends to download patches (which "should" take less time than full packages) Apt4SuSE lets you download either patches or fully updated files. I've always commented out the patch sources though and installed full packages so I don't really know how well that part works. One problem that you may have if you have been using yast previously is that apt may be confused about the installed version of a program due to the patch vs full package difference so your initial setup could be slightly complicated. Synaptic is a front end to Apt4SuSE (apt4rpm) that allows you to select fresh packages to install as well as updates. Read the installation info carefully, its not as difficult to setup as it may seem at first. Once setup its very dependable and easy to use. The only advantage I see with yast is that it automatically runs SuSEconfig after installing the programs while with Synaptic I need to run the command myself.
