Hi there, ... I managed to adapt everything, bottons, window decorations, sliders, etc. to something I want it to look like (which is basically the Mac Aqua theme, btw.), except three things: 1. That darn green ugly SuSE beast of the K menu. How can I replace this icon with something more attractive? 2. That ugly dragon I am presented with in the logout requester? 3. I need an Aqua theme for Mozilla. The only two Aqua themes I found for Mozilla are either for Mozilla 1.0 or 0.9 or something that doesn't work anymore with a more recent Mozilla or for the Mac version of Mozilla. Both are no options with Mozilla 1.5 being the current stable version on Linux/Intel machines of course. relevant System info: SuSE 9.0, KDE 3.1.4, updated thru YOU I'd very much appreciate it if anyone can help me with this. kdm: Greeter exited unexpectedly

Hallo, ich habe versucht, mit Xmanager (www.xmanager.com) mir meinen Linux-KDE-Desktop auf Windows darzustellen/zu verwenden (da der Linux Server demnächst ohne Monitor in den Keller wandern soll....): Xterm über einen SSH-Kanal anzeigen zu lassen, klappt. Ein XDM Broadcast zeigt mir auch meinen Linux-Host zur Auswahl an, Kurzzeitig sehe ich den hellblauen Hintergrund meines KDE Desktops (und dem SuSE Logo drauf). Danach verschwindet der Hintergrund wieder und das einzige Log, das ich auf dem Server bis jetzt sehe, ist: Kdm: Greeter exited unexpectedly. Kdm: Abnormal helper termination, code 1, signal 0. Mein 'normaler' KDE Desktop läuft währenddessen auf dem Linux-Server- Ohne Probleme. Wie kann ich das Problem weiter einkreisen? Irgendwelche Tipps? Thanks Charlie

KDE 3.1.95 from the Supplementary Feed

Has anyone tried KDE 3.1.95 from the SuSE Supplementary feed and got it working correctly? (I have used this mirror: ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.0/ ) I added ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/ KDE/update_for_9.0/yast-source as an installation source in Yast and then did a System Update. After resolving the conflicts as mentioned previously on this list I rebooted. It didn't seem to have installed all the KDE 3.2 stuff. So, again with yast, I uninstalled all the KDE and QT packages and reinstalled them, still using the supplementary feed. This seemed to install everything, except the KDE themes didn't seem to be working and all letters on menu items with an underscore had a green background. Now I have disabled the supplementary feed as an installation source and gone back to KDE 3.1.4 and everything seems ok. Has anyone else had much luck with this? I eventually corrupted my previous SuSE 8.1 installation by installing and forcing upgrades of packages outside of Yast, so I did a clean install of SuSE 9.0 and want to keep it clean and stick to official SuSE packages installed with Yast as much as possible. Hi there I am writing a book about KDE/Linux (in academia) and now need to make some screenshots. I am concidering using Plastik as the theme for the book, but I can't wait for KDE 3.2 to come out (when is that going to happen, by the way?). kmail problem

HI I have recently installed suse 9 and am having some communication problems. Using kinternet and kmail I have no problem with internet access, kmail does the right things with outgoing mail, and saves it in 'sent mail'. Occasionally incoming mail arrives via the 'inbox' in kmail as it should but most incoming mail arrives in [ /var/spool/mail/(user)] accompanied by vast amounts of communications code making it difficult to extract actual messages. When requesting incoming mail via kmail the status bar says 'No new messages' but I still find messages in the /var/spool/mail file. I have jiggled with YAST and Kmail configuration but to no avail. What can I do to discipline the software, or myself if that is where the error lies? Hoping that someone can restore my sanity please. Ian

KDE session host - Remote X applications

To offload an older Sun/Solaris CAD application server from running also CDE sessions for remote X desktops (diskless clients), I wish to possibly introduce a SuSE Linux workstation as a KDE session host/server. That is, instead of getting remote CDE (dt)login from the Sun server, the SuSe/KDE desktop should handle and supply KDM user login, window manager and desktop apps, in addition to displays for the remote X Cad-application running on the Sun server (execution host) as before. Where the production data files (drawings from the Cad apps) now most effectively should be saved, on the Sun application/file server as before or nfs mounted on the SuSE workstation as new file server, is also a question of load and speed to be tested. Besides the Remote X apps mini HowTo, I wish to hear how to configure the above solution to be transparent and easy for the user, and possibly experiences, suggestions and additional helpful docs for this setup? How to disable k3b autostart (SuSE 9.0 / KDE 3.1.4)

How do I disable k3b from starting every time I pop a writable CD into my CD writer? I have a script that I've been using for some time that uses cdrecord to write CDs. The autostarting of k3b interferes with the operation of the script and has resulted in failed CD writing attempts. I've looked thru the KDE Control Center and resmgr docs, but can't seem to find where this insidious event is being initiated. BTW, I strongly dislike automatic stuff like this and would like to disable it all if I knew how. I've had no such problems under previous versions of SuSE Linux. Any help would be appreciated. Mouse

Hi there, ... on the PC at work running the other-operating-system(tm) the mouse driver has a function that if I press a control key it will draw flashing circles around the pointer which helps locating the pointer. In times of ever more increasing screen resolutions and decreasing pointer sizes that turns out to be a pretty useful function. Is there any such program for the KDE? 3.1.95 rc1 and printing

Running cups and samba.. printing to a canon 4200 using the bjc600 driver. Everthing worked fine under 3.1.4. Autologin with kde-3.1.95

Seems that autologin is borked with kde-3.1.95 packages - I get a "authentication failed" reply when kdm first starts up. Worked fine with 3.1.4. Even removed the kdm options from /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm (to see if it was causing any conflicts), but no dice. licq and qt-gui compile problem

Hi, I've been trying to compile and install licq 1.2.7 with qt-gui, licq installs without a problem, I change to plugins/qt-gui durectory, and ./configure gives me that: --------- checking for QT includes... /usr/lib/qt3/include checking for KDE includes... no checking for QT libraries... no :-( configure: error: I can't find the QT libraries. It is recommended to set the QTDIR environment variable. Install the QT libraries, or if you have them installed, override this check with the --with-qt-libraries argument, and I'll take your word for it. ----------- QTDIR is already set to /usr/lib/qt3, and all my Qt libraries are installed, i've tried ./configure with these parameters: ./configure --with-kde --with-qt=/usr/lib/qt3 --with-qt-libraries=/usr/lib qt3/lib --with-qt-includes=/usr/lib/qt3/include but it's failed wuth the same error message... Well, what's wrong and how can i fix it? Thanks... But was that supposed to get the "save" and "apply" buttons back in menu editor? (Unfortunately it doesn't.) There is a 'save' in the menu of the menu editor, which does save something, but not changes. Only deletes are permanent, other changes / additions are lost, even if it is just a modification of the icon used for an app. Regards, Matt

No remote graphical login / XDMCP?

Hello! This is not a question, just something I noticed during the last days when I tried to configure KDM on a SuSE Linux 9.0 Pro Machine to fit my needs, and which may help some people to find the problem... First I noticed that changing Yast2 -> Security and Users -> Security Setting -> Allow Remote Graphical Login did not have any effect. The same with the /etc/sysconfig-Editor (Desktop -> Display Manager -> DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS). Finally I found out, why: 1. Before I did this, I used the KDE Control Center to modify the settings of KDM (System Administration -> Login Manager). This will modify /etc/opt/kde3/config/kdm/kdmrc 2. When you now use YaST2 to change the remote graphical login, SuSEconfig will try to modify kdmrc as well, but it won't as it was changed by another program. Calling SuSEconfig by hand will show you an appropriate warning: ------------ >SuSEconfig [clip] Executing /sbin/conf.d/SuSEconfig.kdm3... ATTENTION: You have modified /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm//kdmrc. Leaving it untouched... You can find my version in /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm//kdmrc.SuSEconfig... [clip] ------------ 3. Unfortunately, when you use YaST2, you will get no warning whatever. So what you need to do is to edit the kdmrc by hand (with an editor of your choice) and set "Enable=true" in the [Xdmcp]-section. I think this is a bug, and I reported it to the SuSE-Feedback. This problem did cost me a few hours to work out, so I hope that someone else may find it faster because I wrote this message... But this might have to do with the de-install of kde3base-SuSE, which had to get done just before the upgrade. And, the menu editor does not have a save / apply button anymore, making it impossible to change the menu. Is that a bug, or just an issue with my installation? Any ideas? Regards, Matt

Unable to Sync Palm Pilot to KAddressbook and Korganizer

I have the new SuSE 9 Personal and I am trying to move off the windows environment to SuSE Linux. For the most part I am very pleased with SuSE and have got most of the services to work properly except for the synchronization of my Palm VII pilot with KAddressbook and KOrganizer. kde starts up with NIS user account

I have a PC running SUSE 9.0 as an NIS client where the NIS server is running HP-UX 10.20. After bootup the first thing it does is it runs a console window and logon as one of NIS users without a password. Have a lot of fun... Directory: /home/acarey Wed Jan 14 11:02:26 PST 2004 Terminal type? [vt100] If I press return and type exit I then get the SUSE 9.0 Login banner. This is scary to say the least. Can anyone shed some light? Ideally it should start the SUSE 9.0 Login banner. Thanks Kelly

Hi! Again, I've not been on this list when you wrote your message, so I can't reply properly. We've also a couple of X-Terminals (IGEL-Terminals to be precise), and I've seen exactly the same errors as you on some of the older ones. It seems to me that KDE uses some X features that older terminals can not handle. One problem seems to be the default GUI style: I've managed to get kdm running remote on the terminals by changing the GUI-style (in the KDE Control Center) from the "Keramik" style to something else (like KDE default). However, I didn't manage to log in with KDE on the older terminals, as almost all KDE-programs crashed (with SEGV). I'm afraid you may have to use another WM (like fvwm or Windowmaker). GNOME doesn't run, either. Cheers Olaf

kdebase3-SuSE Error With New kde-3.1.95 Packages

Hello all, I've managed to resolve all dependencies with the new kde packages, the 3.1.95 packages, save one. While installing <rpm -Uvh *rpm> as su/ root I get the following error: error: Failed dependencies: kdebase3-SuSE <= 9.0 conflicts with kdebase3-3.1.95-0 I've searched this mailing list and several others but I couldn't find any suggestions or hints to resolve this error. And, a newer kdebase3-SuSE package has not made its way to the SuSE downloads site, nor have I found it in the supplementary > kde section on the ftp site. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Default icons configuration

Hello! I've only recently joined this list after you've written your message, therefore I cannot reply properly. Sorry for inconveniences. The script you're looking for is the kde startup script itself: /opt/kde3/bin/startkde It is "patched" by SuSE and includes all the code to copy the SuSE default icons and the rest of the configuration. If you want to add some other icons, you can probably do it there. Personally I think, this is not a good way to modify the KDE configuration for a new user, but I will discuss this in an additional message. Cheers Olaf

Enabling core dumps on SLP 9.0 i386 Solved

After a great deal of searching I was able to determine and fix the inability to get core dumps in SLP 9.0 under a KDM login. Evidently, gpg-agent plays some role in a KDM login, what I am not sure but it explicitly disables core dumps in it's main function. I was able to build a new version of /usr/bin/gpg-agent from package newpg-0.9.4-119 using it's source RPM and build(1). It is missing several dependencies for the build if BUILD_ROOT is set in your environment. If you do not set BUILD_ROOT it uses /var/tmp and does not have any missing dependencies. I have included the changes needed to gpg-agent.c and instructions for building a new /usr/bin/gpg-agent. which is just commenting out the call to: #if notdef may_coredump = disable_core_dumps (); #endif in agent/gpg-agent.c Also note, you must comment out the following in /etc/profile: #ulimit -Sc 0 # don't create core files Perhaps ULB or someone will be kind enough to create a package. Maybe SuSE will fix it. Best Regards. ================== Install the source rpm package for newpg-0.9.4-119 from the YaST via Yast2->Software->Install and Remove Software and searching for newpg. It will tell you which disc to get source from or to turnover the DVD disc if you have the DVD. Now as root create a temporary directory and cd to it. # mkdir temp # cd temp # cp /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/die-with-parent.diff . # cp /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/newpg-0.9.4.tar.bz2 . # cp /usr/src/packages/SPECS/newpg.spec . Now manually mount the install disc, mine goes to /media/dvd # mount /media/dvd # build newpg.spec If you have never done this before it uses /var/tmp by default. This directory is normally clean on reboot so you lose everything. Make sure you have enough disk space free as build uses a chroot(1)ed environment. I have the environmental variable BUILD_ROOT set to "/build" on my system but for this discussion I will use /var/tmp as if BUILD_ROOT was not set. The build copies all sorts of libraries and executeables from install system to the chroot(1)ed environment. This will take several minutes. Missing option in kdialog?

Hi, I came across the need to use kdialog, specifically the 'combobox' option. When I key in: kdialog --combobox I receive the following error: kdialog: Unknown option '--combobox'. kdialog: Use --help to get a list of available command line options. I'm running SuSE 9.0 with latest YOU updates. I understand 'kdialog' is part of kdebase, which lends me to believe that I may have an bad install? Or possibly missing a library or two? Kmail & KDE 3.2

Hi all, And isn't the newest 3.2 just grand? ;o) Some nice fixes and changes. For those that haven't seen it yet, you are in for a treat with KDE 3.2 final. I've got a question to any of those running the new KDE. In KMail, I can't seem to open kaddressbook anymore. I can open from a konsole or from a desktop icon, but I cannot open from within kmail. Neither from the menu or toolbar icon. Anyone else experiencing the same? Suggestions on how to fix? KMail: public key error message

On some messages I get the following displayed just after the header: /Message was signed with unknown key 0x<some hex numbers> The validity of the signature cannot be verified. Status: No public key to verify the signature/ Does this indicate that I have not configured KMail correctly? Where is the public key mentioned in the message. -- "Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? Errors getting login on X-terminal ???

I am using Suse 9.0 and trying to get LTSP 4.0 working. Everything is fine up to the point when the login box comes up. The login box shows up for a <blip> and then the terminal session resets. It looks like a possible kde thing because using xdm works fine. However when I log into kde from a xdm login I get many errors (the program crash box). Mount Lock

Hey there, ... when I mount a CD or DVD using the icon on the desktop, ie. Konqueror, then it keeps a lock on it until I completely logout and re-login again. Only then can I umount it in a shell window. Why is that? Bug or dubious feature? -- cul8er, Paul paul.foerster(a)gmx.net

Another one. :-) I start a script in my .profile with nohup which should execute when I login. The thing is, it does, but it does _twice_. Why is that? Another nice KDE "feature"? Default icons configuration

I would like to set it up so a number of custom icons for commercial software we have in our lab are copied to a users Desktop/ directory upon first login to KDE. I know there is a script somewhere that causes SuSE to copy several icons there (Office.desktop, Printer.desktop, SuSE.desktop, etc...), but I can't figure out where it is. Anyone have an idea? Compiling KDE programs

Dear All I've been trying to compile some programs for which there are no rpms available yet. These include gwenview, kopete but have also included lyx. After I run ./configure I always get something like the following at the end of the configure output: checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.0) (library qt-mt) not found. Please check your installation! For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log. Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support! I have the KDE 3.1.4 and the latest version of Qt and all running on SuSE 8.1. I've tried giving various options to configure such as --with-qt-dir=/usr/lib/qt3 and the ones telling it where the libraries etc are but I still get the above message. Am I missing something? preview of eps files in konqueror

Hi, I use Suse pro 9.0 with its kde 3.1.4. When I manage my eps files (created with Mathematica) I get a strange preview in Konqueror: instead of showing the data according to the BoundigBox, white Icons are displayed with the (almost invisible) data in the lower left corner. Of corse the file haeder is correct and the files are displayed in ghostview according to the BoundingBox (without white frames or so...) This did not happen in my old Distros ( 7.x and before), AND: the same files show a correct preview in Konqueror of KDE 3.1.4 with Debian. So, what is wrong with SuSE??? Thanks for your help, Felix

I installed the KDE 3.1.4-rpm-packages for SuSE 8.0 (http://www.suse.de/de/private/download/linuks/i386/update_for_8_0/) and was surprised to get an error when it came to "libgsf" from the applications-area: Fehler: fehlgeschlagene Paket-Abhängigkeiten: filesystem wird von libgsf-1.7.2-20 gebraucht In English that would probably be something like: Error: missing dependencies filesystem is needed by libgsf-1.7.2-20 What is that "filesystem"? However, there's no way I can find to specify the location of the address list to be imported, and in my environment merely clicking on the function did nothing. On some messages I get the following displayed just after the header: /Message was signed with unknown key 0xA7A33F3FF4BF2568. The validity of the signature cannot be verified. Bad for KMail........

One thing that KMail used to do, that it doesn't with the 9.0 release of SUSE, is tell you what address is "bad" when sending to multiple addresses. Mulitple Floppy Shows Up on Desktop

About every other login (without rebooting), my KDE session will show multiple floppy devices even though there is only one device. The floppy device is attached via USB and is /dev/sda. The other non-existent floppy devices that show up are /dev/sg2 through /dev/sg8. When the KDE desktop only shows one floppy device, it is /dev/sg8 and it is not a real floppy device, it can not be used. You get a "not a block device" error when trying to mount it. I suspect the other devices might be underneath this icon, but I can not move the desktop icon to a new position. Any ideas?? Thanks for your help, -Scott

I'm reposting this question because I don't seem to remember getting an answer and it's getting super annoying having to enable keyboard repeating in the control center each time I log into KDE. I've looked in SaX2 as well an it appears to be correct..so I'm at a loss. ---- Would anyone know why it is when I set the keyboard repeat rate in KDE it doesn't save the settings for the next login? I've been fighting with this since the last update from SUSE of the 3.1.4 pkgs. It's quite annoying. Everything is setup correctly in my XF86Config as well. Default icon bars' icon size

Hi, ... I hate the default icon size in all the programs' icon bars. It's just too big. I like the 22x22 size better. Is there any way to adjust the size globally without having to tell each programm that it should use the size I chose? Possible Kmail problem, need help

Hi: I have just completed a clean install of SuSE 9.0. I configured Kmail and Downloaded about two days worth of email about 1,800 messages. I then installed spamassassin and a spam folder. I shut down Kmail, then restarted. I then spent about 2 hours recreating my directory structure. I then shutdown again and restarted Kmail. I then started creating filters and then filtering email, creating filters filtering email. At the end of process I shutdown and then restarted Kmail. When restarted I noticed that the inbox folder is now sorted at the next to last postiion just above the spam folder. When I click on the folder to select and right click on it and click on properties to bring up the properties dialouge it comes up with the expiry messages dialouge box, as if there is no proprietes dialouge box. My kmail configrc file for the inbox folder looks normal when compared to a previous file. I have two questions. How do I get the Inbox folder to stay in the top position? and Is it normal for the standard system folders ie Inbox, Outbox, Trash, drafts etc to have no properties dialouge box on any expiry dialouge box? Thanks for any help answering these two questions. I do not evere remember having these types of problems with Kmail before. Ralph

I have installed suse 9.0 and it was working fine,but today i.e after a gap of 2 weeks when i tried to boot my system and login into my account i couldn't not login from the GUI provided by kde3.0. I tried to login using the failsafe mode and then tried to run "startx" but then also it gives me msg as fatal error and i cannot get the desktop environment of my account. I can login into my account from the console(both as root and normal user) but i really don't understand why i cannot login from the GUI. Any suggestions or help is highly appreciated. Kooka Warnings/Possible Bug

Hello: I have just completed a clean install of SuSE version 9.0. The first time I tryed to use Kooka to scan an image it did nothing. There were no errors etc., it just sat there doing nothing. So I loaded Xsane and that completed my scans. I then went back to kooka and started it in a terminal window. Installing rpms via konqueror

Sorry if this may be the second post. When installing rpms by clicking on the rpm in konqueror I noticed a greyed-out button stating 'use directory as source with yast'. I'd like to have this feature working as I'm hoping that by selecting it, YaST will be able to see and use supporting rpms in the same directory rather than installing the rpms one at a time. Has any one been able to get this feature to work, or does it work? Nev

SuSE 9.0, KMail: mail list post address not inserted into new mail

I have several mail lists configured with: Properties->AssociatedMailingList->FolderHoldsMailingList clicked and the email address in Post Address. Yet, the mail list address is not inserted into the To: field of the new mail. Is this some error in my configuration? Or is it a know bug?

Hallo, ich habe mehrere virtuelle Arbeitsflächen angelegt. Jetzt möchte ich gerne, daß bestimmte Programme wenn ich sie starte immer auf bestimmten Arbeitsflächen ihr Fensterchen öffnen. z.B. Klick auf kmail und das Fenster erscheint auf Fläche 4 auch wenn ich kmail von Fläche 6 aus starte. Welche Parameter muß ich einem Program dafür mit auf den Weg geben? no, not *that* DRM! Does anyone know what the problem is here? libGL error: failed to open DRM: Operation not permitted libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering It looks to me like framebuffers but the correct ones for my ATI Rage 128 are in there. 'not permitted' is also rather suspicious. This is possibly *not* a kde question, although it is happening under kde. Just in case it matters: - SuSE 9.0 with all updates applied - 2.6.0 kernel (I *think* it happened with the original kernel as well) Everything works fine even with the 'slow indirect rendering'. -- opinions personal, facts suspect. http://home.arcor.de/36bit/samba.html

Problem running Gnome programs in KDE ?

I have a recurring problem with some Gnome programs running in KDE (such as Galeon and Grip). It seems that if they crash, my PC freezes up, and every subsequent time that I log on with the same username. I am inexperienced with Linux, and so my my only remedy has been to delete the username and set up a new username for myself. This is tedious, since I have to save and move all of my files, then change the permissions to the new user. The problem seems to be that there are some runaway programs are trying to initiate in the background. Is there any way around this? Can I edit the user profile to not initiate these programs?
