If you know your hardware, you can eliminate lots of unecessary modules, which will greatly reduce compile time, especially if you are compiling a kernel from scratch.
That's probably the one benefit I might notice. The initial load time is almost invisible on my system. I assume that once I start seeing bootup messages on my screen, the kernel is fully loaded (except for modules) and load time is no longer an issue. And the modules are loaded only as needed anyway.
