kdm: Greeter exited unexpectedly
Irgendwelche Tipps? Thanks Charlie
Hi, sorry for my former posting in German - I didn't realize in time, that this mailinglist is English language only. But there is some update on my problem: Problem description: I am trying to log on my Linux Server (SUSE 9.0, kde 3.1.4) from my Windows XP (with Xmanager as XServer) to kde/kdm. I am able to display a xterm via ssh. But.... If I am trying to connect to my linux server via XDM broadcast, my linux host is displayed as a potential server; I am connectiong to the linux server, seeing for about one second a light blue background (of my linux server) and the connection closes. In the /var/log/messages I can see: Kdm: Greeter exited unexpectedly. Kdm: Abnormal helper termination, code 1, signal 0. Solution guess was: I have seen the bug trace for http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68496 But: ...but in my scenario this happens independantly of starting the xserver in single-window or multi-window mode. Any additional tipps?? Am Mittwoch, 28. Januar 2004 23:01 schrieb Charlie Blank:

I've had a similar problem, and I solved it by switching the GUI-style of KDM, for example to "KDE default". SuSE's default is the Keramik-Style which uses alphablending, and this seems not to be understood by all Xservers. You can change this either by using the KDE Control Center, or by editing /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc Cheers Olaf
Hi, unfortunately this didn't solve the problem :-( The only additional thing I've seen in the kdm.log was (julia is the windows host): Major opcode of failed request: 53 (X_CreatePixmap) Value in failed request: 0x8 Serial number of failed request: 206 Current serial number in output stream: 346 Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display "julia:1.0". Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display "julia:1.0". Xlib: extension "XInputExtension" missing on display "julia:1.0". Failed to get list of devices Xlib: extension "RENDER" missing on display "julia:1.0". X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operati on) ??? That's exactly what I've seen, so I had expected it to be the same problem. I think the problem is the missing RENDER extension. As far as I understood (I didn't really find a good description on the net), this extension simplifies the use of fonts and other pixmaps for X-applications, and many applications need it nowadays. Unfortunaely, KDE and also GNOME seem to need the extension, and - as part of KDE - also KDM. I would try to make the login screen as simple as possible, i.e. - disable anti-aliasing - be sure to use fonts that your Xserver knows of - use a simple GUI theme - don't use a background picture (no idea if this will help at all) And when it works, you can slowly turn back on one feature after the other... You can fix it by configuring Xmanager as following: 1. Run the Xconfig utility in the Xmanager folder. 2. Click Color tab, and then select PseudoColor in the Default Visual list. 3. Click Option tab, and then select WhenMapped in the Default Backing Store list. 4. Click OK to save the change and restart Xmanager. We are planning to release Xmanager 2.0 soon and it will support multiple visual simultaneously. You don't have to configure Xmanager in the new version Thanks for all your help.
