Hello openSUSE KDE users and contributors, This mail outlines our plans for moving towards Plasma 5 as a default desktop for the next openSUSE release, includinga tentative action plan and where help from you all is required. We do not believe on pushing changes on users without some sort of preparation, therefore this document describes the transition plan. See the previous mails for a rationale of this decision. ==== The plan ==== Phase 1: Gather input from the community In this phase, we would like people from the community, if they are able to, to test the currently-available code. It's quite easy, as all the required software is already available directly in Tumbleweed. You should install Plasma 5 from there (bear in mind that its install will not coexist with the 4.x workspace) and simply try using it. We are most interested with feedback, in particular: - Testing packaging - Testing upgrades of packages - Helping with building openQA tests - Checking for missing functionality Feedback will tracked through the following connect.opensuse.org polls: - Overall experience [1] : What does fowrk for you? What doesn't? - Missing functionality [2]: What are you missing from the 4.x workspace that you deem irrepleaceable? - Upgrade experience [3]: Was the upgrade from the 4.x packages smooth? Did anything break? - Visual and hardware-related issues [4]: Is Plasma 5 running well with your hardware? Bugs in the software should be reported upstream, but any issue in the packaging should be reported to openSUSE's Bugzilla. Phase 2: OpenQA testing We will discuss with the rest of the openSUSE community on how to handle Plasma 5 on openQA. This is where we need your help the most, because openQA needles are an important part of the openSUSE testing and we need many to ensure a smooth experience (and transition from 4.x), and we need a lot of them to ensure there are no hiccups down the road. Refer to http://os-autoinst.github.io/openQA/ to see how you can contribute. This phase will go as long as we can get comparable results as the 4.x workspace on openQA. === What about applications ? === As with regards to application releases from KDE (KDE Applications xx.yyy), our plan is to use directly what KDE releases, meaning that we will switch to KF5-based applications once upstream makes stable releases of them. If there are no KF5-based releases of a particular application, the currently available 4.x version will be used. === New repository layout === As part of the migration plan, when Plasma 5 becomes the default desktop in openSUSE the following changes will take place: - KDE:Frameworks5 (already the devel project for Plasma 5 and the KF5 libraries) will take the place of KDE:Distro:Factory (slowly phased out) - Application releases will be hosted in a separate development project, KDE:Applications KDE:Current, offering 4.x based releases, will be kept for users of past openSUSE versions. === Contingency plan === In case the issues reported during the testing period are too severe, we will revert back to the 4.x workspace and await further improvements from upstream. === How can I help ? === First and foremost: testing! We've been running the KF5 based desktop for a while but the team is small, we need more eyes looking for potential issues. Secondly: openQA tests are an essential foundation of an always-stable Tumbleweed, therefore this is another eare where help is warranted. A third area is documentation: wiki pages, guides, anything that can help in the transition. The team can help providing the required information. Above all: always be constructive when reporting issues. Saying "It sucks, get back to 4.x" is not only not going to help, but it is severely demotivating and that can be a problem with a task of this size. Hi guys and gals, I've been checking out Plasma 5 in the past week, and I can't wait for it to hit 13.3, it looks great. Also the default KDE artwork is great, the rest of plasma has been fantastically adapted by the artwork team, so kudos. Only thing I've seen is the breeze places icons are still blue. Is there a plan to change that maybe? If not, I volunteer to recolor the folders according to our branding guidelines. I'm sending you an example of how it could look. Hi, today I hat my first contact with webp files. Sadly the KDE applications in openSUSE (using Tumbleweed) do not support webp images. I read on the web (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=736574) that libwebp needs to be a build dependency of kde-runtime for such support. Is this missing in openSUSE? Can it be added? Can somebody improve on this "installation guide"? https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KDE_Plasma_5#Installing_Plasma_5_on_openSUSE There needs to be more relevant info on _how_ to install it; does somebody install tumbleweed or do they add the repos here:? https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KDE_repositories In the second link, it says don't use GDM. Okay, that's nice, what are people supposed to use and how do they change the value? These instructions need to be well written, simple, informative, and understandable by non-developers. That's the thing about Fedora; there's almost perfect documentation that a lot of thought was put into, and with each version the documentation is updated. With openSUSE, it's the exact opposite. The wiki is practically useless; you have to google information to find anything relevant, and when you do, it pertains to a version 3 years old. If you're lucky to find something pertaining to the current version, it's most likely written in broken English and isn't helpful. [opensuse-kde] Evaluation of the KDE workspace to be used in the next openSUSE version

Hello openSUSE KDE users and contributors, as you may know, the venerable and stable Plasma Workspace 4.x is nearing the end of its long-term support (LTS) period, with upstream committed to basically only fixing grave bugs and / or security issues. The openSUSE community KDE team has been following the development of the new desktop by KDE, Plasma 5 (backed by the KDE Frameworks 5 libraries), since its first 5.0 release, up to the point of running it ourselves. Our objective was to evaluate whether keeping the 4.x workspace as default desktop, or move towards adoption of 5.x. This mail outlines the result of our evaluation. ==== Comparisons at a glance ==== Note: we are talking about the workspace ("the desktop") here. Applications are handled separately. 1. Keeping the current Plasma Workspaces 4.x Pros: - Fairly stable technology - Good number of third-party widgets and extensions available (most also packaged) - Upstream committed to fixing grave bugs and security issues (i.e. it's not "abandonware") - Already integrated with openQA Cons: - Long-term support period ends during Summer 2015 - Upstream unable to handle any other bugs than showstoppers or security issues: this means that medium and low priority issues will not get attention except for special circumstances - Current upstream maintainers don't develop on 4.x anymore, meaning a large time frame for bug fixes - As the underlying libs (kdelibs4) are feature-frozen since years, fixing some bugs can be problematic 2. Going for Plasma 5 Pros: - Actively developed upstream (3 month release cycles) - Based on KDE Frameworks 5 (under active development as well) - Incorporates a large number of features and adjustments that fix long- standing issues (e.g., power management, notifications, rendering...) - Some solutions (e.g. "look and feel packages") make customization for openSUSE easier (less patching) - Easier to push openSUSE fixes upstream (they can get reviewed easier) - Development team with solid commitment - Developed with new technologies (Wayland) in mind (note that it is *NOT* possible to run it under Wayland yet, but work is pretty active in this area) - New visual look Cons: - New technology, not as tested - Qt5's QtQuick relies on openGL, exposing otherwise hidden rendering issues - Integration with openQA will likely need a lot of work - Less third-party widgets available (upstream dropped support for all but QML ones) - Some integration features (e.g. events within the calendar) are not available due to lack of ported libraries - Potential for some regressions - New visual look (some will love it, some will hate it) ==== Results of the evaluation ==== While Plasma 5.0 and 5.1 were not near the quality required for a default openSUSE desktop, 5.2 got very near said level, and we believe (running development code on our machines) that 5.3 will pass these requirements. Therefore our recommendation is to move towards Plasma 5 as the default openSUSE desktop, with version 5.3 or later (depending on the openSUSE schedule). Hi, and sorry to use a mamoth dated distribution, but I will have to keep it for at least beginning of 2016. Anyway a good test for future LTS, evergreen .. I'm using the following kde4x repos on top of normal 13.1 repositories/KDE:/Current/openSUSE_13.1/ repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Current_openSUSE_13.1/ repositories/KDE:/Unstable:/Extra/KDE_Current_openSUSE_13.1/ I would like to give a try to trojika (allowing me possibly to move to Plasma5/Framework5) and dropping my usage of actual akonadi/pim stack until the rewrite is done. I would prefer to not return to thunderbird :-) on obs trojika is failing due to the bump to 5.2 minimal (only 5.1 is present on my activated repository) Should the build in kde:extra be changed to include 5.2 in somewhat way? Or building with 5.1 could still be a possibility. I'm able to build a branch of it and check on my own repos, if needed. I just need full n00bs instruction on what I really need to have in the bco project to build it. [opensuse-kde] ffmpeg in KDE:Extra is too old

Hi, Packman has updated ffmpeg to 2.5.4, which means packages in KDE:Extra build against ffmpeg are no longer working with packman's version. It needs an update. I would do the work, but I can't really figure out how to do it. Can someone do an update here?
