CDROM, DVD do not show up under My Computer - kded doesn't run

Several days ago I lost my Desktop on SuSE 10.1 after the zmd updater had a hernia and didn't complete updates. I got my Desktop back after I installed the latest KDE 3.5.3 RPMs. However, what occurs now is that I get an error message on login, "KDE Daemon - The KDE Crash Handler. The application KDE Daemon (kded) crashed and caused the signal (SIGABRT)". Closing this msg box allows the OS to continue, but..... if I insert a CD or a DVD I do not get the autostart drop-down menu as I did before and the CD or DVD does not appear as an entry under My Computer; in the My Computer menu the entries for /media/floppy, /media/dvd, and /media/dvdram all show that each has a capacity of 32.03GB with 23.04GB free; inserting a flash disc also does not produce and entry under My Computer; even though no entry appears under My Computer for an audio CD or a video DVD both are playable thru either the media player or xine (DVD); going to a terminal and using mc (Midnight Commander), no entries appear for the CD or DVD or the flash disk in the /media directory; trying to run kded from the command line fails; I did something (which I don't remember :-) ) and received the error message, "kde mediamanager not running". I created a new, dummy, user and a login as this new user - and even as root - does not produce this problem: the autostart box appears and My Computer shows the entry for the just insterted CD or DVD or flash disk. The problem only shows up for me as the original user when the system was first installed. I guess that the problem lies with some leftover garbage in my /home to do with /.kde or somewhere else. Does anyone know what I would need to delete (some control file, log file or whatever) so that I can back to the "good ol' times" when I could see the entries for CD, DVD, flash disk? I need to install some software from a CD but as I cannot see its contents using Konqueror or mc I am "grounded" :-( . Any suggestions re this hassle most welcome. Is anyone using imap on Kmail 1.9.3?

I'm having problems setting up imap and I'm hoping that someone is using imap and kmail 1.9.3 who can tell me what setting they have in their kmailrc file. I need to set a subfolder called "mail" as the base mail directory. I cannot find any options in kmail to do that, so I'm hoping that some setting in the kmailrc file will do the trick. Sounds problems (+Graphics)

Hi everybody, I have an x86_64 box running Suse Novell 10.0. I have been mentionning problems with the sound since 9.2 (at least). Most of the time, I dont care, but now, I can not play Ennemy Territory. Once, it worked properly, running it from root, but now (let's say there is some random effect somwhere), I cant run it from root or from user. The sound card is an "ES1370 [Audio PCI] and the graphic card is an NVidia Geforce3 Ti 200. Most of the time there is no KDE windows manager sounds, exepted when stating a session. But when I laungth xmms, it runs very well. Playing ET without sound is not possible... Does someone has an idea on the way to solve this problem ? I have an other box x86 bi-proc with 2 Athlon MP, with a RV100 QY [Radeon 700/VE] as graphical card and allso running Suse Novell 10.0. I did not find a 3D capable XOrg drver. Am I a good searcher but a bad finder ? Thank you for the attention you paid to that mail, Patrick

Akregator Start-up Anomaly

Hi, I was hoping the latest KDE updates would fix this problem, admittedly a minor one, but it's still present... If I launch Akregator from a desktop icon I created for this purpose and then close the window, leaving the Akregator status icon in the system tray, I can reopen the window either by clicking the tray icon or by opening the desktop icon. However, when Akregator was started during login as part of restoring the previous session state, only the system tray icon can be used to restore the Akregator window. If under this circumstance I double-click the desktop icon, I get a bouncing cursor icon which just times out without opening the window for the existing Akregator instance. Is this considered normal behavior? Perhaps there are options I can include in the desktop icon's akgregator command that will make it work as I want whether or not Akregator is running already and whether it was started automatically during login or manaully via the desktop icon. Currently I'm launching it like this in the desktop icon: akregator %i %m -caption "%c" Since I don't know what that means, I'm guessing I copied it from somehwere, probably the Akregator item from the KDE menu. And in fact, that's what the KDE menu item for Akregator contains: akregator %i %m -caption "%c" Perhaps this is an inappropriate incantation for my purposes. Is there a way to invoke Akregator that works whether or not it's already running and when it is running regardless of how it was launched? Thanks. Randall Schulz

artsd failure

Hi, I'm running KDE 3.5.3 on a SUSE 9.3 box. Everytime I log in I've got 2 running arts daemons, and if I have a look in my .xsession-errors file I get the error that an artsd is already running blablablah.... Is it possible to disable artsd entirely? And what is the result? AFAIK all KDE notifications will be disabled... or not? Regards Harry

KDE USB key drive problem in SuSE 10.1

I have just upgraded to SuSE 10.1 (a clean new install on a machine that had been running 9.3), and my key drives no longer automount. From goggling around, I know that SuSE dropped submount and subfs in 10.1, and there has been much complaining from those who do not run KDE or Gnome. But I am using KDE, and from what I gather, there should be an automount system. CDs and DVDs do automount, but not USB keys. Am I missing something here, or are key drives not supported in 10.1? Those not using KDE or Gnome have been advised to use ivman and put an entry into their fstab for each key. I would rather not have to do that.... Editor that warns when file on disk changes

Is there any simple editor for KDE 3.3.2 (level "a") that, like EMACS, warns users if a file that they are trying to edit has been changed on disk since it was loaded? I tried kwrite 4.3 and kate 2.3.2, and in both, even when saving to a file that has been changed on disk there is no prior warning. Yes, I did enable the option "Warn about files modified by foreign processes" in kate. OS is SuSE 9.2. -- Felix E. Klee

Hi List, ... I finally installed SUSE 10.1 on my old and trusty laptop. Everything works great except four little things: 1. The settings for the launch feedback delay have vanished. It works fine but I can't adjust it anymore because there simply is no way to adjust it anymore after I initially adjusted it once. 2. Is there a way to clone my complete KDE settings to a newly created user? Will copying the ~/.kde directory to the new user's home directory work? 3. I use Gaim for Google Talk. When I log into KDE, it always pops up its buddy list window. It works like a charm but is there a way to prevent it from popping up the buddy list window? 4. I installed Thunderbird and it works fine so far. I installed the English SUSE version because I don't like localized operating systems. Same goes for Thunderbird. My mother tongue is German so I tried to additionally install the German language pack for spell checking in Thunderbird because I also write German mails for obvious reasons. The installation went fine and it didn't spit out any error message. But the spell checking preferences do not show the German dictionary and it hence does not do German spell checking. What went wrong? I'm not new to Linux (been there since Slackware 0.99.15 and later went to SUSE 4.3 and from there onwards always with SUSE), KDE and especially SUSE but these things are just beyond me. My installation is 10.1 on an Acer Travelmate 621 LV with all current updates including zen, rug and that stuff. I even made the hotkeys work with acerhk and a little self written shell script and made the screen resolution go to 1400x1050 using the XiG X-server. But the above things remain a mystery to me. Oh, before I forget: Up to and including SUSE 10.0 YOU showed a variety of update sites. Now there's only the installation DVD and the location ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/update/10.1/. Since this can possibly be slow at times or unavailable, are there any mirror sites I can add to the list? Screenblanker problem back?

I thought the screen blanker had been fixed? It worked for a bit, I know, but just today, I noticed all that it will do is just go into the password protected blanker. It had been working correctly prior to last evening. I know I installed a few update files and 99.5% of those were Packman provided files, no new KDE files. Anyone else seeing this behavior? thanks, Lee

Device Desktop Icons

Since installing 10.1 (KDE 3.1 no add-ons or extras) the device icons do not appear on my desktop (both as root or user) until I mount a device in addition to swap & \ (eg. mount /dev/hdd1 /media/hdd1) Making changes to device icon display in Control Center or Configure Desktop has no affect. I see the same thing on the 3 boxes I have installed 10.1 on. Is anyone else experiencing this issue and if so, is there a solution? TIA Dave

USB-stick not showing up in media:/

Hello! It seems that using the KDE 3.5.3 packages for SuSE 10.0 I cannot get my USB-stick to appear in media:/ after I plugged it in. It is mounted and accessible though, since I can just cd to /media/usbdisk and have a look at its contents. I read on bugs.kde.org that this could be related to a broken linkage to HAL which results in it not reporting the mount-states correctly. How can I find out, if this is really the case? Mounting Floppy Disks

Hi All I have been using GNU/Linux since RH 5.0, switched to SUSE 9.0, and have used all SUSE versions with KDE since. I have operated a small lawoffice with only free software for 3 years---but I'm still a newbie at administration. So please pardon me for bringing up the primitive subject of mounting floppies. I used to mount all my moveable filesystems from the command line, and it was obvious that an automount system would be needed before GNU/Linux could rule the desktop. Next I used the KDE kwikdisk tool in SUSE 9.0---a big step in the right direction. By the time I got to SUSE 10.1, full automount seemed to work out of the box. Now I'm migrating to 10.1, and it appears I must mount a floppy from the command line or use the kwikdisk tool again. I think I installed all the standard KDE stuff and the file autofs 4.1.4-23 is installed. My file /etc/fstab lists "auto" as the file system fd0, but has "noauto" as one of the options. I looked at the documentation on automount in the system help pages, but what I saw there was too technical for me----automounting is complicated. The SUSE manual that came with 10.1 says nothing about all this except to give a few hints about mounting from the command line. Is this the way to treat a newcomer to GNU/Linux? Now to my questions: Can anyone give us an explanation of the SUSE/KDE approach to automounting generally? Was there something in the installation about automount that I missed? Is there a simple explanation to my situation---like editing /etc/fstab to change "no auto" to "auto" ? Or should I just relax and continue to use the kwikdisk tool? Thanks! Problems with Kstart

Hello, I have a small problem with kstart (SUSE 9.3 with KDE 3.5.3). I want to use it to pop up a konsole when I log into KDE. In that Konsole I want to mount my TRUECRYPT images, and after that the rest of the script should go on. But not before the Images are successfully mounted. I start that konsole with > kstart --alldesktops --window "Truecrypt" --windowclass "konsole" konsole -T "Truecrypt" -e \ > truecrypt ... The problem is that I find no way to tell the script to wait until that truecrypt command is finished. "Normal" commands show that behaviour, if you call them with "COMMAND &", kstart automatically has this &. How to solve this? kthememanager

Hi, ... I know about the kthememanager. It lets me clone a theme, select and modify it. The modification part is what bothers me. All it does is change everything I can change with a normal theme. But I want to create my own theme with my own images for window decorations, styles, progress bars, and so on. I got the .kth file and it turned out it only is a gzipped file. So, is there any editor or tool that lets me put in single components like images for the window close button and such things? I looked at kde-look.org and kde-apps.org but found nothing? Google also showed up with nothing. I can't believe nobody has addressed the by now. How do all those themes get created and how do people fill the kth files with their own images? The thememanager is a nice add-on for loading, cloning an existing theme, and removing a theme but it does not let one actually *edit* it... -- cul8er Paul paul.foerster(a)gmx.net

KMail slows system down

Hi, are you experiencing the same problem that with about 20 mailing lists KMail slows the system down regularly? Especially when you set the maximum time messages are kept in a folder is set to say 30 days? It's a fact that I suffer great performance problems with my about 20 mailing lists, not speaking about turning on the included anti-spam filter mechanism using spamassassin (and bogofilter), which really pisses me off. I am thinking about changing to another mail client, once again. But exept for text-based MUAs, which one could be faster? Thunderbird...? Doubt that. Greetings, -Ré -- Registered Linux User #324404

If you take a look in your Tbird install log file, it might confirm my suspicion: /home/(username)/.thunderbird/(randomid).default/install.log If it shows errors while trying to install the files, then it could be your normal user name is restricted from writing to the target directory: /usr/lib/thunderbird/components/myspell Try running Tbird as root to install the spelling extension. Then switch to your normal user name and restart Tbird. The dictionary selection should show up when composing a message. >5. Problem assigning hotkey to XF86AudioMedia

I have quite a strange problem: I am currently using SUSE 10.1/64Bit and recent KDE Packages for this distro (which are since today 3.5.3, but the problem was already there with all previous KDE packages for SUSE 10.1). Everything worked perfectly with SUSE 10.0. I cannot set the key XF86AudioMedia on my Logitech Cordless Desktop to start Amarok (or any other application, by the way)! All other "multimedia"-keys on the keyboard (as far as they are recognized by the kernel) can be set up via the KDE Control Center to do something. The key is, however, recognized. Both "xev" and the KDE Control Center show "XF86AudioMedia" when it is pressed. But the action assigned to this key, doesn't matter which kind of action, won't be executed. I tried several of the possibilites in the KDE Control Center to assign Hotkeys. BTW the way hotkeys are handled in KDE is quite a mess, several possibilities to set this up, and it's not quite clear how they interact. Any idea what might be going wrong?

Changed behaviour of Konqueror Archive-Web-Page in KDE 3.53?

Can anyone confirm this?: After upgrading to KDE 3.53, the Konqueror Archive-Web-Page tool no longer automatically converts spaces in the page title to underscores in the .war name. For example, with KDE 3.52, if I go to http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/09jun_moonlets.htm in Konqueror and use Tools - Archive Web Page, the Save Page As dialog used to fill-in the file name as NASA_-_Corkscrew_Asteroids.war but now it fills it in as NASA - Corkscrew Asteroids.war Can anyone confirm this? I would like to report a bug. Dual Screen

I just upgraded my KDE to 3.5.3, after which I'm having a problem with dual screen. I can run my mouse over to the second screen, but there is no desktop appearing on it. What did there change in 3.5.3, that could affect this?

No new mails displayed in Kontact Overview

Distro: SUSE 10.1 with KDE 3.5.3 (This problem exists for me for quite some time and quite a few SUSE- und KDE-updates, however.) The Kontact "Overview" (German name is "Übersicht", don't know if this is the right translation) always displays "No new mails" for my Mail account, regardless if there are lots of unread messages. The account is an IMAP account, and Kontact Overview is set up to watch the correct folders (Inbox) of this account. But obviously this doesn't work, for years now. This is surely not a big problem, but annoying.

kmail does not find backend for listing encryption-keys

Hello! I just noticed that my KDE 3.5.3-kmail does not offer encrypting emails anymore, which did work before. I had a look at the settings for the user and found that the assigned key from 3.5.1 was gone, so I tried to add it again. I am then told that kmail could not find any backends for listing the encryption keys. Since I did not delete any packages, but just updated, I wonder what caused this error. What packages could be missing in order to cause this error? Sven

KDE update for SuSE 9.3?

Hello, I am new to this list. Noticed, that all KDE supplementary resources moved to opensuse.org Now I am unable to update my KDE (SuSE 9.3) any more. (was interested in 3.5.3) The solution described at http://en.opensuse.org/Build_Service/User does not work for 9.3 + YaST. Yast needs the yast-sorurce folder (and it's content) to add a new installation source. How to solve this? BTW: where have the KDE supplementary packages for 9.2 gone? I think, 9.2 is still not discontinued ... Joe

Looks good with its Suse 10.1 and KDE 3.5.1 - not so cleaver after you've installed KDE 3.5.3 and the splash screen still says KDE 3.5.1.

Hi, 1. The other day I managed (thru your forum's help) to get Yast's Install & Remove option to install 'Java' on my PC. It all went superfine but for one thing. I can't see anything on my Desktop or anywhere else. 2. By toying with 'ls' and 'cd' commands (and their prefixes -a, -R, and so on) I came to discover that the whole thing was most likely stored in my PC in hidden files. 3. When activating the 'Find folders/files' option I finally got a global picture of my file: '///home/user' containing some 11 folders/files starting with 'Java...' and contained in a number of subfolders which are all displayed under 'point' name. Example:-folder: 'Java' in subfolder: .local/share/Trash/file/ -file: 'Java 1_5_0-sun-52887' in subfolder: .yast2/you/mnt/i386/update/ 4. Well to me it looks like it is all there and the only thing to do is to possibly drop the whole stuff on my Desktop with the 'save' option of this 'Find folders/files' application or move somehow each one of the 11 files onto my Desktop into a folder of it's own to be able to work with it. sysguard applet cannot connect

Hi, After installing SuSE 10.1 the sysguard applet shows a broken connection and does not display values any longer. Any ideas about what could have gone wrong? What is the preferred method of connection? ssh, rsh or deamon? KDE 3.5.3: Differences between Packages in "SUSE Factory" and "supplementary KDE"

I noticed that there are sometimes packages of the new KDE with different version info in the SUSE Factory and SUSE supplementary KDE repositories. I don't have a example at hand, but there were/are cases in which a packages from the factory repository are already several days old, but nevertheless has still a higher version number than even the most recent package from the KDE repository. Is this correct, or are there different versioning schemes for these repositories? Also the x86_64 packages of Amarok have quite some strange dependancies on 32 bit libraries, at least when I try to install them with smart. (I have dumped YaST for handling this stuff - the new package management is simply a pain.) And one last point: Are the KDE packages compiled with debug info? Never had to download so much megabytes for my KDE experience... But nevertheless, I'm glad that SUSE is still providing the newest KDE packages so fast! I was a bit disappointed when this Novell/Gnome stuff came up, good that KDE is still supported so gooD!

[3.5.3] Nach Update auf 3.5.3 startet kein Screensaver

Hallo Liste, nach Update auf KDE-3.5.3 startet bei mir sowohl unter 10.0 als auch unter 10.1 kein Screensaver mehr. Ich kann die Screensaver testen, aber sie starten nicht automatisch. Die Energiesparfunktion arbeitet jedoch ohne Probleme. Hat jemand ne Idee woran es liegen könnte ? Gruß Micha

Moving mail from Kmail/SuSE10 to Kmail/SuSE10.1, how?

Hi list, - I can't seem to move all my mail from my old SuSE10 machine to my new SuSE10.1 machine. - I copied the /home/vk/Mail over. - I copied /home/vk/.kde/share/config/kmailrc over This gave me my accounts and my mails - but NOT my subdirs of my mails... Can anyone enlighten me, please :-) BTW: SuSE10.1 install and runs perfectly fine in the first go on a DELL PRECISION | M90 with 1920 x 1200 screen (!) -- ------------------------------ Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard
