Editor that warns when file on disk changes
Is there any simple editor for KDE 3.3.2 (level "a") that, like EMACS, warns users if a file that they are trying to edit has been changed on disk since it was loaded? I tried kwrite 4.3 and kate 2.3.2, and in both, even when saving to a file that has been changed on disk there is no prior warning. Yes, I did enable the option "Warn about files modified by foreign processes" in kate. OS is SuSE 9.2. -- Felix E. Klee

Hi Felix, Does 9.2 come with fam ('file access monitoring') enabled by default? It's been a long time since I set up 9.2 so the details are now fuzzy, but a quick Google seems to indicate the packages fam and fam-server might need to be installed and enabled. regards, Carl

running fam does only make sense (at least for KDE) when you use NFS. Otherwise the Dnotify or Inotify implementation of KDirWatcher are the more efficient way to go. -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nuernberg, Germany email: adrian@suse.de

Well, I /did/ just prove my recollection was fuzzy! ;-) Was that the default setup in 9.2? I don't recall having to manually intervene... Carl

nedit, IIRC.

Just tried it: Yes, nedit seems to behave just like EMACS in respect to detecting changes in files. So, I guess we'll install it. The user is a novice user (at least when it comes to text editors) who is supposed to take part in editing a shared set of files. Depending on the type of file, it is aware of coding tags, if the files you are editing contain code.

It's not a KDE application, but jEdit always notices behind-its-back modifications to files it has open. Guru's RPMs has a jEdit package. It's a Java application, so you'll need to have at least the basic JVM packages installed, too.
