Hi all After I updated some files of KDE to 3.5, my YAST updates is not working anymore, whenever I do a update, I am told that are no updates available, although I know that there are updates available. (Almost 60 days since last update.) What can I do to get it working again? Kobus

DCOP interface to korganizer

Hi all! Is it possible to get via DCOP all appointments and tasks (if they have a date assigned) in a given date interval? I've always wanted to write a small script that does a simple ASCII "dump" of my next appointments (to include in mails or whatever). So far I have no idea how to achieve such a thing. I'm not even sure if DCOP is the right way to go. Unfortunately I can't make much of the information I found. Like KCalendarIface::ResourceRequestReply resourceRequest (QValueList<QDateTimePair> busy,QCString resource,QString vCalIn) What would I be supposed to pass to that method? What does it return exactly? And how do I have to treat the return value? Fwd: KDE Print manager - CUPS initialization

Hi everyone I hope somebody can help - I think I broke the print manager, and does not know how to fix it. In the print manager settings for the CUPS server, I removed the server name. In stead of typing "localhost", I entered. Wallah the print manager does not open anymore - it stop on the screen - "Initializing Manager". Is there somewhere, I suppose so, a file that I can edit to put the server name back in, or is it screwed up really bad? Recently a bug I reported on bugs.kde.org was marked as invalid saying it is SUSE-specific. Therefore I reported that bug at bugzilla.novell.com where it was accepted. Now I do not know whether to report a bug in a KDE application to bugzilla.novell.com or bugs.kde.org. Please advise. Hi, After latest update from supplementary source I could not boot into runlevel 5 on my 10.0 desktop. It hanged when running /etc/init.d/earlykdm. The workaround was to use earlykdm script from 3.4.2-26 package. What supplementary information do I have to provide? Should I file a bug report? About Midnight Commander profile in Konqueror

Are both panes in the Midnight Command profile of Konqueror *intended* to show the same directory? Konqueror has been behaving this way for me since 3.4, IIRC, and I don't see the point in it. How do I delink the directory that the left pane displays from that of the right? screensaver problem

I've been trying to solve this problem off and on for a couple of months with no luck. Googl and web searches have only turned up a couple of posts that were remotely similar and w/ no solutions so here it is. 2 users on this machine have no problems setting up kscreensavers, if I create a new user that user can also set up their screensaver. The problem is that 1 existing user on the machine has no access to the kde screensavers. She can open kcontrolcenter, click on the screensaver module and the module window appears but no screensavers are shown in the list or preview portions of the window. All other users can choose kscreensavers using this method so it's not an install problem. As I said before, If I create a new user the screensaver module works. If I copy this users /.kde directory to my wifes home folder (the user that can't use the kcreensaver module) the screensaver module still doesn't work. From this it seems like a permissions problem, but since all users have basically the same permission setups and are members of the same groups I have no idea what the permissions problem could be. I've rooted around in the ~/.kde directory and found nothing unusual. As a matter of fact it is possible to hand edit the ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc file and get a functioning screensaver, but this is not really an acceptable solution for my wife (the user in question) though. Suse 9.2 kde 3.5.1 (currently, but the problem has existed since 3.4 at least). Has anyone seen this problem? Any ideas Thanks -- dh

Konqueror not displaying Wikipedia infoboxes correctly

KAudioCreator ripping problem

Hi All, I have Suse 10.0 with KDE 3.4 installed, with all the trimmings for MP3's and DVD's. I can play previously recorded (dare I mention by Windows) MP3's, installed on hard disk, no problem with Amarok and XMMS. Just wanted to be clear about this! I wanted to rip some more tracks to encode to MP3, so fired up KAudioCreator. All went well, the tracks ripped and encoded successfully (I thought) using the Lame encoder. Fired up Amarok, and tried to point it at the newly written tracks. Error message "Cannot find media, or file not readable" Tried Xmms, nothing, not even an Error message. Rechecked Amarok and XMMS with previously recorded MP3's, plays them with no problems. Tried again to rip the tracks with KaudioCreator, and Lame encoder, also tried with oggenc encoder. Neither of these work at all. Same message from Amarok "Cannot find media or file not readable" I should point out that the stand-alone RealPlayer10 has no problem playing these new tracks, so I start to think there may be a problem with both Amarok and Xmms. I then fired up GRip, with the Lame encoder, and although slower, ripped and encoded the same tracks. Success!! Tracks played in Amarok and Xmms with no problems at all. Therefore, somewhere in my KAudioCreator there is a problem. Although everything indicates the tracks are ripped and encoded in KAudioCreator, Basically the tracks will not play at all in Amarok or XMMS, but the stand-alone RealPlayer10 will play them. All the above done with GUI, not command-line. As stated above, all the relevent codecs are installed, otherwise I should not be able to play previously recorded MP3's at all. I have checked all the file properties, and they are the same on the playable track and the non-playable track. What on earth is KAudioCreator doing to these tracks when encoding them, so that they won't play? I have Googled, but found nothing similar to this problem. Silly questions time:- Does GRip use the same Lame encoder as KAudioCreator? If so, then I cannot accuse Lame of being faulty. I see that GRip uses CDParanoia as well, should KAudioCreator use this also? There is an option to set the encoder priority time, at the moment it is set to normal, should I increase this to high? Is there some magic incantation to make KAudioCreator behave itself? I admit to being totally baffled by this! It looks like GRip will be getting my business until I can resolve this issue. parser plugin for konquerer

Hi Does anyone know of a plugin to Konqueror, which parses the Document source and performes actions based on that? Hmm, perhaps not so clear what i mean... so an example: open a webside that contains VBscript (which ofcourse will not run :), and in the VB code is a link to a document, e.g.: ... objFS.CopyFile _ "\\servername\path\path\xxxx.doc", _ m_strFileName, _ ... (if I feed the string "\\servername\path\path\xxxx.doc" into Konqueror, it will open the document...) What I need is a "button" that when pressed, it will parse through the Document source, finds strings that I have defined, and does actions upon them as I have defined... KDE 3.51 Kicker panel misbehaving

This was previously referred to on the "KDE 3.51 - How is it?" thread. If the system tray is in a kicker panel which is on the top right of the screen, one icon belonging there is always displayed on the top left of the screen. I test with moving the panel from the top right to the bottom right. This fixes the problem. Can anyone confirm it? Also, I moved the panel from the bottom left to the top right. It was set to autohide. But it came out from autohide only when I moved the mouse to the bottom left (previous position) instead of the top right (current position). Similarly, if I move the panel from top right to top left, I need to take my mouse to the top right to make the panel come out from autohide on the top left. amaroK deosn't find music brainz

I have amaroK 1.3.7 with KDE 3.5.0 now. A few updates ago (2 or 3 months) amarok stopped contacting music brainz to get meta-info for my mp3 files. It worked before. Whe I klick the music-brainz button I just get the message 'Das Stück wurde in der MusicBrainz-Datenbank nicht gefunden.' ('The title couldn't be found in the MusicBrainz database!'). That message appears very quickly, it looks like the database is either not configured or amaroK just doesn't try to connect it. libmusicbrainz-2.1.1-6 is installed. Any clues? Martin

At any rate, if your laptop has a slot on the mobo for a mini-pci, you can google using your laptop + mini-pci netcard. My laptop was a barebones Asus M3N that I put together myself because I didn't want all the Microsoft fluff that comes with new laptops. My broadcom card is a Buffalo 54G. Check their website for the current drivers or write to Linuxant Support and they will help you get it going under their driver. I have had great success when SuSE broke something getting them to do custom workarounds. The price of the driver is under $30.00, I believe, but well work it, with the support you get plus lifetime driver updates as long as you card company has an agreement with them. --Keith

I have had good luck with Linksys PCI cards out of the box with SuSE. I also have used Linuxant (not free, but free trial) drivers for my Broadcom card and it just works. I have intel 2200 built in now, so I haven't plugged in the Broadcom (Buffalo 54G) card in some time. Netgear PCI cards also work. Default Settings for user logging in for the first time

Hi List, is there any Documentation available, in which way SuSE takes Settings for a new user? To clarify this question a little bit: $user logs on to KDE for the first time. Therefore he doesn't have a .kde-folder in his home directory. Now the question: From where are the settings taken, upon which .kde is built, i mean the Default-Settings. How is this realised at SuSE(9.3) and which Directories/Files do play a role? It looks like, that SuSE found his own way to "hide" several KDE-Settings. Are these things documented somewhere? No notifications from korganizer on SUSE 9.1/KDE 3.5.0

Hi all, I just noticed that I don't get any notifications from korganizer. For example an event where I configured to get a notification dialog 15 minutes prior to the event. Nothing happened. I found out that I don't have the kalarmd icon in the tray. Starting "kalarmd" from the command line didn't yield any output or error and the icon was not appearing. I can see the process with "ps" nonetheless. But it just isn't working. In addition I don't see any menu entry to start it. And no right-click in the tray to add it either. I'm using SUSE 9.1 Personal with the KDE 3.5 package from the "supplementary" repositories. Does anybody have an idea what's wrong? hard coded Icon Positions

Hi, I put some icons onto my desktop and want them to stay at the positions I put them. One icon is placed at X=40 and Y=560 with a 1048x756 screen. My problem is that KDE nows better than me where to place the icon, therefore the icon moves downward every time I log in. Is there a way to tell KDE not to change the positions that I specify in IconPositions? Wireless in Suse 10.0

I am very new to Suse linux and trying to set up my wireless connection. I am having trouble getting Yast to configure the device. The subsystem sees the device but Yast will not let me configure it. I'm pretty sure that I set it up correctly in Yast. kde-3.5.1 how is it?

libdrm missing on update to KDE 3.5.1

Hello! When I update to KDE 3.5.1 via Yast from the supp-dir I get two conflicts. - libdrm-devel is missing and needed by kdelibs-devel - khotkeys still wants kdebase 3.5.0 I found packages for libdrm, yet not supplied by suse and since I do not use khotkeys, just the question, if anybody encountred any problems after ignoring that dependency. Hello List, My question is, have any the same Problem with Mail in the Innbox. after the update, a have some mails for 4-5 x again the equal Mails in the Innbox. i can clean up, with the duplicate Featcher but this is not the best Idea. I don't like this ;). Of course it might be possible that the settings (old / new driver) are slightly different, but even then, it´s still an issue of the driver version. I ran sax2 afterwards and with the old driver, it didn´t work, with the new one it works. So I guess this is something we should tell the you-people. Do not forget that we´re talking about something subjective here: If I say that the fonts appeared much bigger under 10.0 before solving it, you could have another opinion about that. btw: please keep an eye of the recepient - you should always reply to the list! Different Font Sizes on same KDE

Hello! I am using two SuSE versions on the same PC: 9.3 and 10.0. I updated both of them with the supplementary-packages from ftp.gwdg.de, which means that both versions are now using KDE 3.5.0 level a. Both version are using the same /home-partition. I am havin problems with font sizes. When I log on with the same user, fonts on 10.0 appear much bigger than on 9.3. The font settings in the control center are exactly the same (should be if both are using the same /home-partition...). The resolution is also exactly the same. Both versions were updated with the nvidia drivers via yast online update (although I am not quite sure if 10.0 configured them correctly - and I am writing this mail with 9.3, so no check possible right now). Development with Qt

Just out of curiosity how do those of you that do Qt based development deal with the likely version mismatch between the Qt system libraries (in /usr/lib and likely other places) and the libraries used for development? For example, I'm using Qt 3.3.5 at work on a SuSE 9.2 system that uses Qt libs at version 3.3.3 (or something like that). We install the latest version of Qt 3 in /usr/local/qt and build. Then we add the appropriate lines to .profile to point the compiler and apps that we build to the right location for the 3.3.5 version. Our apps depend on MySQL so we build the qsqlmysql plugin too. We seem to have intermittent problems with the apps going to the wrong library location for libqsqlmysql.so. Do you overwrite the older delivered libs with the built ones? It seems like that would be a problem with version mismatches. Further, when you deliver an app do you customarily deliver the newer Qt libraries for the app and leave the system libs alone? What controls "autostart"?

Whenever I insert a CD or DVD in my reader/burner, two things happen: 1) An application is automatically launched (kaffeine for DVDs, kscd for CDs etc) 2) A popup window asks me what to do. These two things are seemingly totally independent, because no selection I make in the second case changes the first. What settings control the autostart feature? Where are they stored? Well, I finally got a chance to get things working better. I went into Control Center and went to the KDE Components > File Associations. There I was able to select several video formats, including WMV files and change the order of apps offered, putting MPlayer on top. Now, when I click on a WMV file, Firefox asks me what to do and offers MPlayer first. Hi, I am pretty new to Linux and Suse Linux in particular. On windows, I am able to open "Local Area Connection Properties" and click off "Show icon in notification area when connected". This gives me a little icon by the clock that shows when there is activity between my machine and the network." How do I get the same thing on Suse? Thanks for your help, Yaakov.

How to compile lineak_kdepluging

I am trying to compile lineak 0.8.4 for my suse 10 64 bit. I have installed lineak ,lineak_defaultplugin nad lineak_xosdpluging. But i can't compile lineak_kdepluging since it cant' find the kde libraires Here is my configure script ./configure --prefix=/opt/kde3 --with-qt-dir=/usr/lib64/qt3 --with-qt-includes=/usr/lib64/qt3/include --with-qt-libraries=/usr/lib64/qt3/lib64 --with-extra-libdir=/opt/kde3/lib64 --enable-libsuffix=/lib64 --with-extra-includes=/opt/kde3/include But the script complains checking for KDE... configure: error: in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE libraries installed. This will fail. Any ideas? P.S. I think suse sholud be more carefur where it put the necessary libraries. Qt is in /usr/lib and kde /opt/kde . Synchronizing palm-pilot with kmail

Hello! I have installed SuSE 10.0 (the download version) and now am trying to synchronize my palm-pilot (it is an M505) with kontact using kpilot. After first tests it seems to work well for the addresses, calendar and activities. But: It only uploads new mails to the outbox in kmail and new memos to knotes. It does not downloads existing notes nor existing mails. Even in the configuration menue the tab for configuring recieving mail is missing! It is only possible to configure sending mails (with kmail - no other option, but I do not miss them, I do not want to use SMTP there, I wish to send my mails via kmail). Following some hints in mailing-lists I have already checked, that it's kpilot version 4.5.4 running, saying it uses pilot-link 0.11.8, and this version of pilot-link is installed. Hi, I want to install the latest kde on my computer which has not a broadband connection.... I want to use kontruct, and i can download the neccessary parckages on my other computer. If i use cd konstruck/kde make fetch It does download the packages i want (not all , why?). If i copy this file tree on ly other compouter and use make install it will try to download again the packages. Firefox and WMV Files

When I attempt to view a WMV file from Firefox, it always starts Kaffine which doesn't seem to work with WMV files. I downloaded MPlayer and that seems to work with these files, but how do I get Firefox 1.5 to run MPlayer instead of Kaffine when I click the file link? FWIW, I'm running SuSE 10.0 and KDE 3.4.2.
