SuSE 9.2 Pro and Touchpad Issues

Hello all, Just received my copy of SuSE 9.2 Pro and completed a clean install on my Toshiba Satellite 2435 laptop. For whatever reason, the laptop's touchpad was not detected/installed correctly. Using the laptop has become extremely difficult. The mouse opens *almost* every window and app that it trails over and hardware clicking/tapping doesn't work. I don't recall what driver I've used in the past with SuSE and this laptop--truth is, I never looked. Currently I'm using the generic PS/2 Mouse (Aux-Port) driver as indicated in the Hardware section of YaST's Control Center and the touchpad is somewhat functional, albeit with irritating side effects. With previous versions of SuSE the touchpad was detected/configured correctly and without my intervention. Anyone using SuSE 9.2 with a similar machine? Searches on SuSE's Support Portal turned up zero articles related to ALPS Touchpad devices. Xvnc does not start KDE anymore after update to KDE 3.4

HI! Since updating my Suse 9.2 to KDE 3.4, Xvnc (started via xinetd) does not start KDE anymore. When I connect to the specified port, I get a grey screen and an X mouse pointer, but no KDE login. I get nothing in .xsession-errors (I guess because Xvnc is being started by user nobody) and nothing in /var/log/messages. vncserver works OK. Any hints? Thanks! Thomas

Monitor-Einstellungen ignoriert

Hallo. Ich habe folgendes Problem mit einem 19-Zoll-Monitor vom Typ JEN: Sowohl unter 9.2 als auch unter 9.3 stellt die KDE die Frequenz zu hoch ein, oben entsteht ein ca. 3cm breiter Rand, das Bild ist gestaucht und weit nach rechts verschoben. Alle Versuche, im Controlcenter, mit YAST oder mit sax2 die Einstellungen zu verändern, scheitern hartnäckig. Die Einstellungen lassen sich zwar ändern (bei etwas niedrigeren Bildwiederholungsfrequenzen gibt sich das) und speichern, beim nächsten KDE-Start kriegt man aber immer wieder nur den gleichen alten Salat. Hallo Liste, folgender Fehler: 1. der Persönlicher Ordner läßt sich unter Konqueror nicht öffnen. Fehleranzeige: KDEInit konnte "kooka" nicht starten! 2. der gleiche Fehler tritt auf wenn man am KDesktop die Ordner -Arbeitsplatz -Mülleimer aufruft. bei den Ordner -SUSE erscheint dir Fehleranzeige: KDEInit konnte "SUSEgreeter nicht starten Anmerkung: Ich habe das Betriebsssytem SUSE 9.3. Das Programm "kooka" habe ich ( deinstalliert) unter YAST wieder gelöscht. Wo liegt der Fehler? Gruß Harald Piasecki

Clean font rendering with freetype2, ttf, the bytecode interpreter and antialiasing

Hi List! I'm reporting a (finally) successfull attempt to get crisp and clean looking fonts on my SuSE 9.2 / KDE 3.4.1 box. It took me quite a while to get the result that i have now, but the final procedure is (as is the case frequently) as easy as one-two-three, so i'm reporting it here for the archives and because i have unclear issues which i will be asking further below. One of the most frequently reported annoying problems on linux boxes is (IMHO) font display. There are myriads of HOWTOs and descriptions about getting truetype fonts and antialiasing working on a linux box, so i will not repeat what others have described in detail. On my own box at home, i always follow these descriptions so i have AA enabled and also have lots of free and less free truetype fonts installed. To enable & configure font antialiasing, i use the KDE control center, switch on antialiasing and set it to leave out font sizes of less than 15 points, apply the changes and restart my KDE session to let all KDE apps benefit from the changes. Result: Yuck! Or, more precisely: If I look close enough at the fonts on my LCD panel, i see some problems. Take for example the big letter A: In many fonts, the line from the bottom left point to the top middle is fuzzy and has additional "wrong" pixels in it. So, not knowing it better, i reconfigure antialiasing to not leave out smaller fonts. The result now is "better", i.e. the wrong pixels are smoothed by the antialiasing algorithm. But still! Small fonts now look sort of fuzzy and not really crisp. However, lacking time and energy, i usually leave the settings as they are and live with the font display as it is. Some time later, i stumbled upon references to the bytecode interpreter in the freetype2 library and that it would help to get better font display. I then read what the freetype2 folks write on www.freetype.org and did not enable the bytecode interpreter because it would require to re-compile the library which i would have liked to avoid. Also, the problem with the bytecode interpreter is that it needs patented algorithms, which is why it is disabled by default in almost all linux distros today. The freetype web page also mentions that their pixel-hinting algorithms are actually better than the bytecode interpreter, so they recommend to not enable it but to instead use their pixel-hinting algorithms. The page also explains why the bytecode interpreter and/or the pixel hinting is needed: The font glyph definitions contain bytes which are ignored by default and due to this, the wrong pixels i describe above are caused. I finally decided to give the bytecode interpreter a try, went to download the freetype2 sources (version 2.1.9, to be exact) and enabled the bytecode interpreter by removing the comments in one of the header files in the source code. What follows then is the usual combo of: ./configure make make install For freetype2, i also had to copy the resulting library files from /usr/local/lib to /usr/lib, but this was also done in a few seconds. I then restarted my KDE session and.... Wow! I must have been blind previously! All fonts are displayed clean and crisp, my LCD panel allowed me to distinguish each and every pixel and there were no "wrong" pixels anymore. I then re-configured anti-aliasing to start at the font size of 15, as it is supposed to be because antialiasing does not increase readability for small fonts, quite on the contrary: It makes them fuzzy! Of course, if the lack of the bytecode interpreter causes off-glyph pixels in most of the letters, antialiasing is the only way to smooth the glyph again, but this only blurs something which has been rendered badly in the first case. Did anybody encounter similar difficulties? Can anybody describe a method to get a similarly crisp and clean font display *without* the patented bytecode interpreter? I feel that this will simply not be possible because in KDE, you can only enable pixel hinting with antialiasing *enabled*, which tells me that small fonts will not benefit from pixel hinting because, as said above, antialiasing is supposed to be disabled for smaller fonts. I did play with the hinting settings that are offered by the AA config dialog but did not actually understand what i was doing, maybe i left out a variant that would have helped? Any other ideas and suggestions? Robert

QT update from supplementary/KDE fails for SuSE 9.1

Hi all, I have a problem updating from the supplementary/KDE repository. I use ftp.gwdg.de /pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1 What fails are the QT3 packages: Installing the following 5 package(s): qt3-3.3.4-20.i586.rpm qt3-devel-3.3.4-20.i586.rpm qt3-devel-doc-3.3.4-20.i586.rpm qt3-devel-tools-3.3.4-20.i586.rpm qt3-static-3.3.4-19.i586.rpm ************************ * ERROR: Update failed * ************************ error: Failed dependencies: xorg-x11-Mesa-devel is needed by qt3-devel-3.3.4-20 I don't know how to resolve this. It seems to me like a bug as SuSE 9.1 came with XFree, not X.org. XFree86-Mesa-devel is installed on my system. I don't feel too happy to install with --nodeps but would prefer if the dependency could be fixed (or is the policy to upgrade XFree to X.org also for older SuSE versions?). Kontact and To Do List printing

Hello all, I am trying to print my To Do list from within Kontact. However, I only want to print the entries what have a specific start date. However, no matter what options I select in the To Do Print dialog, it always wants to print all the entries, in alphabetically order. Is there any way to fix this? Konqueror

Hello all, The icon placement for "Icon View" in Konqueror seems erratic. Sometimes there are huge gaps between the icons. This is for files that do have previews enabled and those with a standard icon. Is there anyway to control this? I tried changing "Height for icon text" and "Width for icon text" but they don't make that much of a difference. I'm using SuSE 9.3. Thanks, Alvin -- Please reply to the mailing list.

KDE: cannot log in as root

As I am having problems, logging in at KDE as root. After having checked - together with helpful people in this mailing list - whatever could be the reason for that, I only see the way to re-install Suse. I have tried to repair the system, tried the update, but it does not change the points, I want to have changed. My question: Is there a proper way of installing Suse on my computer without formating the harddisk? I have lots of data on it and it would be a huge work to save that all. The only way, Suse offers a new installtion is to re-format the harddisk. Can I avoid this? Thanks for your hints. Klaus

Soundcard problems

Hi, my soundcard was auto-configured and works fine. Unless I change the user in KDE. Then, I have to go to yast, delete the soundcard from the soundconfiguration list. Then I add a new soundcard which is recogized well and installed. After that, the sound works again. The soundcard is aVT8233/A8235/8237 AC97 Audio Contoller Type. Any hints, what to do? Firewall

hi All I need some assistance here please. I go lan gaming quite offen, and use Windows for those games thats not supported by linux. I want to set up a firewall and a virus scanner on my SuSe 9.3 laptop to scan everything that goes out and comes in. I got my desktop connected to my laptop and my laptop connected to the lan. Hallo Liste, seit kurzem habe ich zwei Konten bei KMail eingerichtet, wenn ich nun die Emails abrufe funktioniert dies auch wunderbar, nur wird mein System unheimlich langsam während die Emails abgerufen werden. KDE: cannot log in as root

Hi, I installed Suse 9.0 and upgraded via 9.1 to 9.2. Under 9.0, I could login KDE as root without a problem. Since my upgrade to 9.1, this does not work anymore. If I try to login as root, the screen turns to black for 3 secs, then the login-box comes up again without any warning. The log writes for that time: ------ Jun 12 13:45:03 netcharly kdm: :0[14039]: pam_unix2: session started for user root, service xdm Jun 12 13:45:03 netcharly kdm: :0[14039]: pam_unix2: session finished for user root, service xdm ------ I checked KDM for AllowRootLogin. Mounting Reiserfs partition

I just bought a new hard disk, made partitions with fdisk, and formatted it using mkreiserfs. I edited /etc/fstab for that partition: /dev/hdb1 /data reiserfs defaults,user 0 0 I can mount it just fine, but I can't write a single byte to the partition as a user. I'm obviously missing something here, but I don't know what. What else do I have to add to this line so I can write to the partition as user. Thanks in advance.

Suse crashing very reliable

Two Problems (Suse 9.3, KDE 3.4.0/1) 1. Konqueror crashes when deleting files 2. System/KDE crashing when halting the system. I end in X-Window with a black screen with only the mouse pointer. The Console is blinking in every color of the visible spektrum. The 2. Error means that I cannot turn off the computer. I have to press the power button. Other people have the same problem as shown in http://www.linux-club.de/viewtopic.php?t=34608 Both errors mean that I cannot recommand Suse 9.3 at the moment. Verner, Can you telnet/ssh into the machine from another computer when it's hung at the blue screen? Check your /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager and /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager. For KDE windowmanager should have: DEFAULT_WM="kde" And displaymanager should contain: DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm" The only times I've had a similar experience is when those got changed to a different window manager, twm or something similar. I cannot do anything - only switch off the machine. This leaves the runlevel set to 5, so a rescue CD is in order. Once fixed I'm back in scenario a). Question: where does KDM get its list of users from, where is (if any) its configuration file? How to get back normal life again? Verner, No worries on the name. What does it do if you change KDM_USERS="vk" in the displaymanager to KDM_USERS=""? Other than that my files look very similar. Odd KDM behaving, all users listed, profiles

Hi list, - I've ended up in a mess, now hear this... My SuSE9.3/KDE plain vanilla used to work like a breeze - with profiles and all. Somehow, while setting up the ThinkPad to work in a temporarily new wireless environment, I landed at this scenario: a) I edit /etc/inittab into runlevel 3. This causes a (as expected) textmode boot-up from where I can log in and to "startx". All is normal and life is good. However, if I (in textmode) fire up "mc", I get the most strange linedrawing characters. I.e., "mc" is useable, but looks very odd. b) I edit /etc/inittab or YAST into runlevel 5. Reboot. Now I get KDM with a list of ALL users and systemusers (from /etc/passwd I think) listed. If lucky, with a working keyboard and I can log in. But, alas, only to a blue background with a very primitive Xterm - that doesn't respond to the keypad. I cannot do CTRL-ALT-F1/F2 etc., to get a shell. I cannot do anything - only switch off the machine. This leaves the runlevel set to 5, so a rescue CD is in order. Once fixed I'm back in scenario a). Question: where does KDM get its list of users from, where is (if any) its configuration file? How to get back normal life again? Hi I upgraded from SUSE9.2 to SUSE9.3. Now I can not use the Bluetooth OBEX object push client (V0.3.0) anymore (it worked excellent in SUSE9.2). By scanning the devices my bluetooth mobile won't be detected anymore? If I use hcitool scan, the mobile is detected. First, how can I fix this or secondly what other possibilities do I have to send files from my Laptop to my mobile. -- Thanks for any help Sam

/etc/ld.so.conf messed up, using apt.

I changed the subject of the e-mail because it is not related to the KDE discussion. Ok, I started using apt on my 9.3 32bit installation. Somehow my /etc/ld.so.conf file was really wrong. It was pointing to /usr/i486-suse-linux and /usr/i486-suse-linux-ld5, neither of which exist on my system, and it was missing some of the more useful library paths such as the X11 and /usr/lib entries. Could apt have caused this to happen or was it most likely something else? I was using apt to install MythTv (which wound up not being successful due to missing pieces, but that's another issue). Hallo Liste, Ich hab ein KDE rätsel für euch. 2 Rechner, beide mit SuSE 9.2 + KDE 3.4.1 (supplemetary) + Packman, im großen und ganzen der gleiche Softwarestand bis auf ein paar sachen die auf einem der beiden rechner mangels anständiger 3d grafik keinen sinn machen bzw die auf dem anderen keinen sinn machen weil der kein laptop ist. und jetzt das Rätsel: auf rechner a können KDE apps (juk, amarok) mp3 abspielen, auf rechner b nicht. an den Dateirechten liegts nicht, mit xmms geht es auf beiden rechnern. was ist da los? lost capability to resize windows

My wife has lost the capability to resize windows on her computer -- SuSE 9.1 (KDE 3.2.1) stock, all patches applied. While she can't resize any windows on her session, if I open a kde session with a different user on her machine, also in KDE, I can resize windows with no problems. Back in her session, I tried changing windows decorations and style in the KDE control center, but the problem persists. The only window that can be resized is the YAST window, running as root, which I leave open on her desktop so she can patch the machine through YOU when the SuSE watcher icon goes red. Since she can't remember when this problem started happening, or even if she was ever capable of resizing windows, it's hard to pinpoint some specific change in the system that may have caused this behavior. What version of SuSE and KMail are you using? I have a 9.3 x86_64 system using the shipping version of Evolution checking multiple accounts and it is performing quite well. What kind of accounts are they? He's asking how to move the title on the windows in KDE back to the left in the title bar. His have gotten moved to the center of the title bar with the selection of a new Window Decoration. Hallo Liste, meine Frage betrifft KDE 3.4.0 Level b unter SuSE 9.3. Nachdem ich im Kontrollzentrum die Fensterdekoration gewechselt habe, später aber wieder das ursrüngliche Design "SuSE" eingestellt habe, hatte sich in dieser Dekoration (SuSE) das Ausehen der Fensterleiste (Da wo immer der Name des Fensters drinsteht...) geändert, und zwar steht der Titel des Fensters jetzt immer in der Mitte und nicht wie sonst üblich links. Dabei ist es egal um welches Fenster welchen Programmes es sich handelt (konquerer, kontact, etc.). Bei den anderen Usern auf dem Rechner tritt dieses Verhalten nicht auf. Ich habe schon alles mögliche Versucht, habe bisher aber noch nicht die entsprechende Einstellung gefunden. Weiß jemand, wo man die Position des Titels eines Fensters festlegt? MfG, Jakob Wefers

Compress context menu

Hello, I have been using suse 9.3 for about a week. I upgraded from 9.1. Has anyone else noticed that the "Compress" context menu (in Konqueror) shows up intermitantly? Sometimes, it will appear, allowing me to either compress a directory or uncompress a tar.bz2 (which it created) or even a tar.gz (which it has also created). Panel Clock Missing Date

Hi, Is it just my imagination, or did the panel clock prior to the KDE 3.4.1 upate display the date (when you select the "Date" check-box in the clock configuration dialog? In any event, it does not now do so for me. I've tried lots of changing of the options and every one appears to have the intended effect except for the Date option, which changes nothing when enabled or disabled. I use the "Digital Clock" setting with custom colors. Is my memory of this detail faulty? Was there never a calendar date displayed in the panel clock? If there was, has anybody else lost it in the update to KDE 3.4.1? Thanks. Randall Schulz

Hilfe. seit ich auf meine suse 9.2 den kde 3.4 draufgetan hab geht die admin session nicht mehr... alle anderen session files in /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions die auf DEs zeigen die installiert sind funktionieren. sogar gnome (nachdem ich in der desktop datei den Exec und den TryExec parameter um den vollen pfad zu gnome-session ergänzt hab). nur die admin session geht nicht. auch nicht mit vollem pfad zu YaSTadminSession... was geht da ab... bye, MH -- Die unaufgeforderte Zusendung einer Werbemail an Privatleute verstößt gegen §1 UWG und 823 I BGB (Beschluß des LG Berlin vom 2.8.1998 Az: 16 O 201/98). KDE themes

Hi Does anyone have an idea on installing kde themes not .kth which you can install using the kde theme manager in control center. This is compressed as a tar.gz file and inside the gzip these are the files thats there. Folder "srokK" inside srokK there is stylesheet.css and another folder called images which has all the .png files and that is it. Gerald

Thanks to Robert Graf-Waczenski especially to Travis Beaty. I installed cyrus-sasl-plain and it works. Since gmail's SMTP uses PLAIN for its Authentication method, I think, by installing cyrus-sasl-plain solves the problem. I can send e-mails now. Thanks a lot. new kde and menus

Hi , I just compiled kde 3.4.1 with konstruct. Basicly everything is fine except few things : I used prefix=/opt/kde-3.4.1 After the install i edited 2 files : 1. .bashrc - added custom PATH where replace /opt/kde3 with /opt/kde-3.4.1 added KDEDIRS=/opt/kde-3.4.1 2. .xinitrc - added startkde The problem is with the menu entries and kcontrol modules. There are no kcontrol modules and many kmenu entries are missing . I do not want to use suse's settings. I just want the default kde settings. Any suggestions ?

I use gmail as my POP and SMTP with Kmail. This setup was working recently but does not work now. I can receive e-mails but can not send. I already checked all the settings for SMTP but they are all correct. How can I fix this problem? This is the error I get when sending email: Sending failed: Authorization failed, An error occured during authentication: SASL(-4): no mechanism available: No worthy mechs found authentication not supported The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder. That faq is outdated. ATI has official 64bit Linux drivers available under their normal Driver & Software section. The latest version was released in May. I agree. Personally, I really like Yast, but some things are difficult to find. Like the new repackaged ATI drivers for 9.3 x86_64 are under the i386/Supplementary, which made them rather difficult for me to find at first. I appreciate the effort that the SuSE folks go through to repackage so much for us, I'm just sometimes confused by where they choose to distribute the 64bit packages. The problem is that I simply can't find yast sources for all of the other packages that come on the cd's, nor can I find any doc's to describe it. Where are other languages?

On this computer (SuSE 9.2 Pro, KDE 3.4), on my wife's KDE session, there's a Canadian flag or an American flag on the panel. This lets her toggle between US English and French Canadian when she's using K-Mail or OpenOffice. I don't remember how I set this up. When I open KDE Control Center > Regional & Accessibility > Country/Region & Language > Locale I get one language listed ... US English. The dropdown list beside it has a choice of other languages including.... well, just US English. No choices... even though she clearly has Canadian French available to her (with the accents in all the right places, etc.) If I change the country/locale above the language box, the availability of languages becomes.... well dammit, it still says just US English. So, I guess KDE Control Center is not where this is set? (One wonders what the heck it IS for, then.) I'd like to set up the same options for her on our other computer (so she'll stop using mine all the time for her business correspondence...), but how? It was probably set up several versions of KDE ago, and maybe even several versions of SuSE ago (depends where the settings are kept - I retain only the /home directory when I install newer SuSE versions). Apparently, the KDE Control Center... etc. route has nothing at all to do with the language settings/preferences. Where else do they hide it? Thanks Kevin (not quite bi-lingual, apparently)
