I use apt with synaptic to update my system. When I select the package: kdegraphics3-pdf: (kpdf) I get the following error: kdegraphics3-pdf: Benötigt: xpdf-tools but it is not installable So it requires 'xpdf-tools' which is not available. what is going wrong ? Matthias

Error while minimizing windows

When I try to minimize 'any' window, instead of appearing on the taskbar, it simply disappears. I can cycle through them with alt-tab, and they are shown if I select the 'show tasks list' button (well, I've configured the mid mouse button to show the active tasks). It is really strange as this problem occurs ONLY in my wife's lxbox, while in mine it doesn't (all works fine... and, as always, I'm blamed... she's a Mac user, and I don't want to buy another pc at home...) I've installed SUSE 10 OSS, with all the updates available, with KDE same version which comes with Suse 10: only security fixes installed. Desktop Fonts less than 16pt -> no Antialiasing

This is with KDE 3.5 on OpenSuse 10.0. Enabling Antialiasing in KDE Control Center has no effect on all fonts when setting them to less than 16pt. I am not sure whether this is a KDE related problem. Could also result from a rather unusual screen setting (1024x600) which X appears to have some problems with (i.e. I successfully edited the x.org configuration file in /etc/x11 which, however, now can't be opened by Sax). Anyway, maybe someone can shed some light on this. Thanks! Guido

Help reqd on how Kate and OOo 2 store Unicode

Opening OOo (first Writer then Calc) I entered the Unicode sequence: 0928 092e 0938 094d 0924 0947 (Devanagari script for namaste = "I bow to you" = greeting) but I find that OOo (both Writer and Calc) stores it as the following sequence in content.xml - e0 a4 a8 e0 a4 ae e0 a4 b8 e0 a5 8d e0 a4 a4 e0 a5 87 A friend told me that on Windows the digits are stored in little-endian model, and sure enough Windows Notepad saved the following Unicode text file: 28 09 2e 09 38 09 4d 09 24 09 47 09 where my original input is recognizable. But I fail to see any connection between the above text and what OOo stored. Kate also saved it as: e0 a4 a8 e0 a4 ae e0 a4 b8 e0 a5 8d e0 a4 a4 e0 a5 87 which is again different from the original Unicode sequence or Notepad's output but is the same as what OOo gave. I observe that e0 occupies positions 1, 4, 7 etc, and the length of the Kate / OOo text in bytes is exactly one third greater than that of the Notepad text. Apart from that I fail to identify any pattern relation between the Notepad text (original Unicode sequence) and the Kate / OOo text. Can anyone please elucidate this situation and why Kate and OOo stores the Unicode text in a different way from the actual Unicode sequence? Thanks. Updating KDE on different SuSE version

Hello! I am sure that this question was asked before, but I didn´t find a "search" function for this mailing list. Please apologize. My question: Is there any way to update a KDE version via YaST? I know for example that I can add packman (packman.iu-bremen.de) as http source for installation of packages. I am looking for an analogue way to update thr running KDE version; for example on SuSE 9.3 to KDE 3.5. I did this on a test PC, but I had to solve all dependencies on my own, so "rpm -Uvh <packagename>" on the command line. But as I am installing some PCs, a better solution would be great. I know that I could set up an YaST installation source on a machine in my LAN, but I don´t know how this works and - most important - download time and size doesn´t matter to me. But if anyone here can give me an understable howto for that, this would also be great (but is has to be related directly to my problem, if possible). Yours, Michael Neumeier

Hello, I have a serious problem: After an upgrade from SuSE 9.0 to openSuSE 10.0 root can't log in any more in KDE! I get the message: "Could not start kstartupconfig" and the login aborts. Normal users don't have this problem and shell-login for root still works... Can someone help me please? Thanks! ivan

Viewing JPEGs in Konqueror

I have a strange problem. I'm sure I caused it, but don't know when or how. I can view jpegs using any of my viewers. I can view jpeg attachments with kmail. I can view jpegs within applications such as digikam, open office, or scribus. I can view jpegs with konqueror if I log in as root. I can no longer view jpegs with konqueror if I log in as user (normal login). I have looked at file associations and at the Konqueror preferences. All seem normal. Any ideas on how to fix this? Desperate Bill (SuSE 9.3, KDE 3.5)

After upgrading to kde 3.5 amarok does not start

Hi, I upgraded to kde 3.5 (using suse 10.0) last night and eveything works fine except amarok (1.3.7), which does not start for my user. With a fresh user, it starts but freeze when showing the first run wizard. It was running fine with kde 3.4.2. Does anyone know what can be happening and/or how can I fix it? which Mailing list header info makes "Reply to Mailing-list" work?

All, I use KMail, and the "Message > Reply Special > Reply to Mailing-list" function (shortcut "l" (ell)) works nicely for this list and many others to which I'm subscribed. However, for a couple of lists, the created reply contains the quoted message material, but the "To:" field is unpopulated (requiring some extra keystrokes in order to reply to just those lists). Could someone tell me (or point to where it's documented) which particular line or lines from the message header are being used by KMail (and presumably other mail readers) to create a Reply to Mailing-list? A friend is hosting one of the broken lists, and I'd like to let her know how to fix hers. Of course, she's using Yahoo-lists, so she might not have that kind of control available to her, but she could still submit a request to the masters at Yahoo... I've visually compared headers and I do see plenty of differences, it's just that I'm not sure which differences are important to this particular function. (Of course I can supply a sample "broken" header if anyone cares to see.) Thanks, Kevin

i am selecting directories(11 directory) then compressing by clicking right->compress->Compress as-> zip archive the result is strange; zipped 2. directory zipped 3. directory zipped 4. directory and a file, named "ziXFpDQ1" i am taking any other results like that. is it normal? is it about paralelism, pipeline, overclock or else what? KDE Control Center & MX1000 Laser Mouse

Hi, I have a Logitech MX 1000 Laser mouse and the KDE Control Center's Mouse section shows the tab that corresponds to this mouse. Unfortunately, all the controls there are disabled. Unfortunately, the actual mouse precision is not correct, and it makes it hard to control the mouse even though I've set the acceleration and threshold settings to rather extreme values. It's also very obvious when my settings are not in effect (during the login screen, e.g.), when the pointer flies all over the screen with only a little movement. Does anyone know why this section of the controls are inactive and what I must do to enable them? Thanks. Randall Schulz

using 8 button mouse on suse 10

I have this problem regarding the use of a 8 button mouse ( with one whee) on suse 10. As I have noticed, my wheel seems to work fine.Yet, when I tried to check on YAST, some of the buttons are doing thesame functions as the other buttons. This is redundancy now. What I'd like to do is to bind some keys for my mouse for the buttons to be userful. For example, this "back" and "forward" button. In windows, this is used to go back and forward when browsing webpages, but as for suse 10, I can't seem to get this working . Now, how do I configure the mouse buttons to get it to work properly. Or, if there's a chance for me to bind keys like "alt-l" , then that'd be great. I just want to make the other buttons useful. My mouse is A4tech Outlook 8k. Is there a custom kde menu hook present?

I have been extending the kde main menu, but this requires that the main menu (/etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu) is being edited. I don't like this too much, as this will be undone by next kde update. I wonder is there a custom hook available in kde's main menu to extend it? The reason to extend the main menu, is to list inhouse (say a school, city hall, a company (that could even be suse)) maintained systems, or inhouse developed applications, etc. I extended the file with /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu with: <MergeFile>custom.menu</MergeFile> which is more than sufficient to support the above described wish. Anybody aware of such thing? If not I think I'll open a bug report for it. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

While following a 'MAKING YOUR KDE LOOK LIKE A MAC OS X' tutorial, I come across 2 kcontrol center tabs that seem to be missing... The tab is there, but it looks completely different. The same canm be said about the desktop behaviour tab, it is there but looking very different. Now is my (suse-3.5) correct and is the tutorial wrong, or vice versa? Or is it because I use the suser-guru baghira rpm for kde-3.4 in kde-3.5?? Two soundcards??

I have sound hardware on the main board, but also a sound card in the system (for some reason). Is KDE supposed to be able to handle that? It seems I can control the sliders of both mixers with kmix, but KDE is only ever using the first (mobo) mixer. That is, no audio out of the sound card. Likewise for /dev/{audio,dsp}. How can I chose which output to use for which audio source, or even, which to use for everything? Howto - stop KCalc turning long num into e+ format

I entered the value 2415020.3135 into KCalc and hit enter and it became 2.41502e+06. How do I prevent this? It is very irritating not to see all the digits I entered. I need to know what I am working with, no? Please tell me how I can stop this irritating behaviour of KCalc's. I tried changing the maximum number of digits and decimal digits in KCalc settings to no avail. Using KCalc 2.0 on KDE 3.5 on SUSE 10.0. SUSE 10 - k3bsetup not found

I checked MARC for suse-linux-e and suse-kde and found similar complaints for SUSE 9.1 but wanted to verify here before I mess with root: Using SUSE 10, KDE 3.5, k3b 0.128, when I startup k3b I get the message: cdrdao will be run without root privileges It is highly recommended to configure cdrdao to run with root privileges to increase the overall stability of the burning process. Solution: Use K3bSetup to solve this problem. I do not find k3bsetup at: 1. the Settings menu of k3b 2. the KDE > System > More programs menu 3. the terminal 4. /opt/kde3/bin/ 5. the SUSE FTP repositories (where I looked) I see several solutions for SUSE 9.x in the old archives but am hesitant to use them on SUSE 10, especially since I have to do this as root. Hello all: This regards to suse-10.0 i386: I would like to set my kde login screen to kde default since I don't like suse-default. I have changed the DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME="SUSE" line to DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME="" in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager using YaST. It had no effect. I also run SuSEconfig --module kdm3 that had no effect either. Why is this and what should I do? Kmail: the address select window isn't resizable anymore...

Hello list, abput two weeks ago, I came in with the problem that I can't see the OK button in the adress select window of Kmail (the window which appears if one clicks on the three dots at the right side of to, cc, bcc). The window is so large in the vertical direction that the ok button is located below the bottom line of the monitor. To have access to this button, I must use the ALT key the left mouse key for moving the window upward, until the OK button appears. However, this solution is not very helpful, it's only a first workaround. To get rid of the problem, Randall R Schulz suggested: "It's a resizbale window. Once the edge is visible, it can be dragged to resize the window." Okay, if I follow this suggestion, I see the following behaviour: The lower window boundary moves over the OK button, so that the OK button is outside the window. So I assume that my address select window isn't resizable any more. I'm quite sure that I've forced this behaviour by my own, but I really don't know, when and how :-( Is there anyone who knows, how I can make this window resizable again? The setting of this windows must be stored annywhere? Who knows something about the location of these settings? Hoping for help... Alexander P.S.: I'm running SuSE professional 9.2, and the KDE of this distribution.

Kmail and Kontact instability

I am running Suse 10.0 (x86, 32 bit version). I recently upgraded to KDE 3.5, and Kmail and kontact crash repeatedly. I began this message with Kmail 1.9, but it crashed before I could finish it. i am using Thunderbird to post this message. I like Thunderbird, but I would prefer to use Kontact as I like the integrated interface with the contacts, calendar, and to do list. I have already deleted the old .kde directory in my home directory, but that didn't help. I am not sure it makes a difference, but I am using Kmail as an IMAP client, not a Pop client. Please note that I was not using KMail under kde 3.4, as previous versions of KMail did not let you filter IMAP mail into IMAP folders, only into local folders. The version of KMail with kde 3.5, version 1.9, does allow you to filter IMAP mail into IMAP folders. For this reason I am interested in getting Kontact working. I have googled for kontact problems kde 3.5, but found nothing. Is anyone using Kontact under kde 3.5 with KMail as an IMAP client. Mike -- Michael A. Upgrade to KDE 3.5 - what are my dependency workaround options ?

All, I've got SuSE 10 (from the commercial DVD) with KDE 3.4.2b. I wanted to try KDE 3.5. I've seen that people have tried it and experienced a few little problems - the kinds that I can live with. But nobody (unless I missed some mail) reported being thrown into dependency hell while installing the upgraded KDE. So, last night I downloaded everything from: http://mirror.cc.columbia.edu/pub/software/kde/stable/3.5/SuSE/ix86/10.0/ and tried to install/upgrade with YaST and then (when it got a little complicated for YaST) with rpm from the command line. After sorting out some relatively contained dependencies regarding ARTS and a couple of other packages, I got into the more open-ended stuff: error: Failed dependencies: python-qt = 3.5.0-7 is needed by kdebindings3-python-3.5.0-7 libpoppler-qt.so.0 is needed by kdegraphics3-3.5.0-6 valgrind >= 3.0.0 is needed by kdesdk3-profile-3.5.0-7 libdb-4.1.so is needed by kdevelop3-3.3.0-5 libqscintilla.so.6 is needed by python-qt-3.5.0-8 libakode.so.1 is needed by (installed) kio_burn-0.7-0.pm.0 I found updated packages for qscintilla, and got: error: Failed dependencies: libqscintilla.so.5 is needed by (installed) kdebindings3-python-3.4.2-8 I'm not sure what I'm looking at, here. Is the reference to "installed" merely telling me that I've already got a version that's installed and working (with KDE 3.4), or is this a pointed warning that if I upgrade libakode and libqscintilla, then KDE 3.4 is going to stop working.... probably before I've gotten as far as getting 3.5 to work... ?? Because of my undertainty, I'm rather afraid of running rpm -U with -force or -nodeps. Since I am very much a gui kind of person (I do use the command-line, but as an adjunct to doing all my everyday stuff via gui) I don't want to disembowel KDE 3.4.2b before I've got 3.5 installed and mostly working. What's the poop? Is there a way, other than trying it and having things break, to know if an app will accept a link to a newer version of a package as long as the link is named as the older version? Is this just a situation where I can create a couple of symlinks and everything will be happy again? Or .... what? I mean, I'd just try it, but this isn't one of those stand-alone things that you can try independently. This is all of KDE, and for all I know, most of the rest of my system. I've had experience of loading newer version packages and faking links to the older version in the middle of a bunch of interdependent packages and I ended up re-installing SuSE (I think it was 7.3) from CD because that was far easier than trying to fix all that I had broken. Can't see the ok-button in the adress window of kmail

Hello list, I've a strange problem. Dont ask me why and how, but I have achieved to change the size of the popup window for selecting Email adresses in kmail (the three dots ... at the right hand site of the "to" and "copy" field, in a manner that I dont see the ok and the cancel button any more. I can change the window's size with the mouse as I want, but I never see the "ok" and "cancel" button again. They remain below the lower border of the window? Has anypne an idea, how I can get rid of the problem? I am running SuSE Professional 9.2 with it's KDE. Alexander

KDE3.5 and *.jpg's

After installing KDE 3.5 on a SuSE 9.3 machine, I find that konqueror no longer recognizes jpegs. It recognizes and displays thumbnails of png, tiff, gif..... but not jpegs. I checked "file associations" and all seem normal. I can also use applications such as digikam and open office to view the jpegs with no problem. It is only konqueror that fails to see them. KMail 1.9 (KDE 3.5.0) Omits Thread Marking Commands?

Hi, In KMail 1.8 (KDE 3.4.2) I could mark a whole topic thread as "read". Now the "Mark Thread" sub-menu of the Message menu has only "Watch Thread" and "Ignore Thread." What gives? I've looked through the Preferences dialog, but I can't find any way to enable these commands. Are they simply gone? If not, how might I get them back? If so, why?? Randall Schulz

Monitor switches off before KDE login site appears

Hi all, after having installed (successfully) Suse 9.3 on a Dell OptiPlex GX620 with a Ultrasharp 1905 FP monitor I meet the following problem. While booting, everything works fine until the moment the login window usually should appear. Right at that moment on the screen appears a message like "videomodus not available" or something similar and then the monitor switches off. This is the case even though during the installation process the monitor and its resolution is identified correctly. The starting option splash=0 does not change the described behaviour. SUSE 10.0 X86-64 - KDE 3.5 Kicker Crash

Hi list, I upgraded KDE on the subject install last night to 3.5. Since then, frequently when I logout of my user session or reboot, I get the following error; Kicker has crashed with a signal 11 - SIGSSEGV. I have renamed ~/.kde and restarted KDE, this was no help. I did not see anything meaningful in the system log. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can isolate this? It's not a huge deal as it does not seem to impact KDE whatsoever, but I'd like to fix it if possible. I do have a backtrace report I can post if anyone might be able to decipher one of those. Please help!. I am a newbie in the UNIX world and I am assigned to maintain a Suse Linux Professional 7.3 box which hosts our company mail server and website. I came to find out that it seem we have been hacked, this box is exploited and emails are being sent to outside world without our knowledge, can someone tell me where I can find security patches for this version if suse. Problem with kmail and attached zip file

KMail works fine for me with nearly all attachments. If the attachment is a *.zip file and I double click on it, ark opens but with the message it is read only. If I try to open e.g. the *.mpg file in the zip it doesn't work. If I save the zip file first ark also works fine. Any idea how I can use ark with kmail directly. Help with using KFileReplace regular expressions

I need to use a regular expression in KFileReplace to replace: <a href="*.htm"> by <a href="*.html"> But if I enter the above two as the search and replace strings respectively and say "go", (enable regular expressions is ON) I get zero replacements, even though the app says it has scanned all the 58 files in my working directory. Also, I need to account for the fact that there may be a line-break between the <a tag and the href value, so please tell me how to do that too. If there is a line-break, I need to include a line-break in the replace string too. I am prevented from using simply "*.htm" -> "*.html", because I also have external links on my site, and the servers I point to may or may not redirect html to htm, if the file they hold ends in htm and not html. But if I use <a href="*.htm"> I avoid this problem, since I have all external links on my site labeled as class="ext" (i.e. <a class="ext" href="*.htm">) so I can give them a different colour. For the txt files, the association with Kate was set by the machine. For the html files, the association was set by me, since I like to use Kate to edit my html files by hand. I observe that in the case where I set the association myself, the Kate icon is not displayed in the menu. Please tell me how I can get it to be displayed. Weird error with Kodak CX6330 camera on KDE 3.5

I have a Kodak EasyShare CX6330 digital camera (my distro etc in sig). I took a couple of snaps and plugged it into a free USB port. I got two windows: SUSE Hardware Detection New Camera Detected Open with kfmclient openURL 'camera://USB PTP Class Camera@[usb:001,005]/'? [] Do Not Ask Again [Configure...] [Open] [Ignore] and USB Imaging Interface - KDE Daemon A new medium has been detected. What do you want to do? Medium type: Camera Open In New Window Do Nothing [] Always do this for this type of media [Configure...] [OK] [Cancel] Now the former one was there with SUSE 9.3 too, then SUSE 10.0 KDE 3.42 (original release) too. The latter only started with KDE 3.5RC1 and now comes with KDE 3.5 too. If I use the former, I get a neat tab under Konqueror from where I can access my images. If however I use the latter, selecting "Open in New Window", I get a tab in Konqueror with path system:/media/camera and containing a folder "Kodak CX6330". I click that, I get system:/media/camera/camera in the Location bar and see another icon "Kodak CX6330" but this one is not displayed using the folder icon but the generic file icon. If I click *that*, I get system:/media/camera/camera/camera in the Location bar and An error occurred while loading system:/media/camera/camera/camera: Unknown error Bad parameters Does anyone else running KDE 3.5 see this? kprinter does not print...

Hello, on my 10.0 the kprinter does not print. It is a EPSON CX 3650 printer. The strange: it prints when I do "lpr -P CX3600 test.ps" it prints the cups build in testpage, it prints the gnome testpage. And: it prints if I print in kprinter with UNIX-Lpr. But not when I use kprinter with cups. Any Ideas? Thanks Joern

Hi I recently switched to the Dvorak keyboard layout a couple of days ago, but I am having problems with the @ and other "alt gr"(like pound, dollar, euro, yen and so on) combinations Anyone here experienced the same? Oh, yes, I forgot about this one. I rebuilded just with the --nodeps flag instead off hacking spec file. Completely black menus in GTK applications

Since upgrading to SuSE Linux 10.0 my GTK application have got menus with black backgrounds. Very annoying since the default font colour is black, too... I've seen this in acroread, gimp and eclipse. If I run acroread from a konsole and activate a menu, I get the following error on stderr: (acroread:5291): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_window_set_back_pixmap(): pixmap must have a colormap I've tried various settings in the ControlCentre, under "GTK Styles and Fonts", but to no avail. I've removed all .gtkrc* files in my home directory, didn't help either. I googled the error, and found something releated to gtk2 2.8, but I've checked and the indicated patch is already applied to the SuSE gtk2 version, 2.8.7. Any hints on how to resolve this? -- !++ !
