SAMBA/Network browsing problems

Hi all, I have recently installed Suse 9.1 and Im having major problems with browsing and authenticating to our samba server which is configured as our primary domain controller and file server. I am using KDE 3.3 When I first installed suse I configured the smb client under YAST, when I first tried to join the domain I was succesful. When I tried to browse the network, konqueror immediately popped up saying " Internal error". I tried joining the domain from the console and I had no problems, I can even view the shares on the samba server from the console. I then tried a number of times to rejoin the domain and constantly received errors. I thought this was perhaps a bug with YAST and I did a complete online update. When I now try join the domain, the domain does not appear under YAST if I click the browse button. If I manually type in the domain and click join I dont get prompted for authentication but I dont receive any errors either. I can still manually joing the domain from the console and can still see all the shares fine from the console. I tried joining the domain from the console and then browsing the network from the desktop but I still receive the same Konqueror internal error. As a last resort I tried mounting the shares using the console with smbmount //server/share /mountpoint -o username=username,password=password, this works fine and I am able to browse the shares from the desktop using konqueror but I am not given the privileges to access the files that my username should. It is as though I have mounted the shares but my username has not been authenticated. I have proved this by the fact that I can access shares that do not have user specific privileges, I get denied access to the ones that do. The rest of our network works perfectly with the same usernames on our windows pcs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have tried searching google and have found others with the same problem but so far have found no solution. Attempting to get bluetooth USB device working

Well, here is the rub, when ever I plug in the USB bluetooth transeiver I get an error mesage stating "Failed to connect to SDP Server". Details are not that very specific. I googled for possible fixes, but don't seem to be able to wade though and find anything that would point to a quick fix. Lots of details on kernel 2.4x, and patches neede to make it work, but I am on 2.6x. Full details: Dell Latitude C640 USB "Ultra" Bluetooth USB Adaptor model BTA-3000 SUSE 9.1 KDE 3.3x Can someone point me in the right direction to start, or offer any suggestions as to what I have goofed on? kuickshow disappeared in latest kdegraphics3

I've just noticed that my kuickshow appears to have vanished since picking up the latest (3.3.0-12) kdegraphics3. It doesn't appear to be in the rpm, although it claims to provide (in the 'provides' info) /opt/kde3/bin/kuickshow. It also seems to be absent from the 3.3.0-10 package. It's still in the kde menu, and graphics files attempt to open in it, but fail since it isn't on my system. Martin Farmilo

k3b brennt nicht mehr!

K3B bringt in einer Systemmeldung folgendes: "cdrecord kann nicht ohne root-Berechtigung laufen Es wird dringend empfohlen, "cdrecord" so einzurichten, dass es mit Systemverwaltungsrechten läuft. Nur dadurch läuft "cdrecord" mit hoher Priorität, wodurch der Brennvorgang stabiler wird. Viele Probleme können dadurch gelöst werden. Alternativ kann "resmgr" von SuSE verwendet werden. Lösung: Verwenden Sie den K3b-Einrichtungsassistenten zur Lösung dieses Problems. cdrdao kann nicht ohne root-Berechtigung laufen Es wird dringend empfohlen, "cdrdao" so einzurichten, dass es mit Systemverwaltungsrechten läuft. Kontact and Kpilot, sync works but where is my data?

Hello, I try to get my data from pilot to Kontact. Sync works without problems and in Kpilot is all my data. But how do I get it to Kontact? On my system is Suse 9.1 personal installed with latest yast updates (Kde 3.3, Kpilot 4.4.4 Wolfsburg and Kontact 1.0 form supplementary directory). Conduits in Kpilot are set and I tried to save my addresses to standard addressbook and in a vCard file. Did I miss a configuration option? Adam

Bei der Druckerinstallation, über YAST, wird folgende Meldung angezeigt: "CUPS Daemon konnte nicht initialisiert werden"!!. vielleicht kann mir einer über diese Hürde helfen. Hi Luca! Thanks, you saved me. :) Disabled the new extensions Composite and RENDER and konsole works fine again. I will try to go deeper into this in the meanwhile and will look for xorg bug reports, too. Slow launch of KDE apps

Hi, I upgraded to Suse 9.1 and found the KDE applications launch (all of them) very slow. Google reports other people having this problem. Sometimes it seems related to a problem with name resolving, but I don't think this is my case. I tested different PCs and the problem remains. On the same hardware (k6-2 400 MHz, 256M Ram) this are some timings: Konsole start, repeated several times to be shure it is in cache: Suse 9.1: 6 seconds Suse 8.2: 1.5 seconds Knoppix 3.6 (kernel 2.6, KDE 3.2.3) 2 seconds It doesn't matter if it is launched from the console or from menu. Other X applications (Xeyes) start in no time. Things get worse on slower hardware. During the launch time the cpu seems to be very busy, while the disk is barely accessed. It seems to me something is wrong with Suse 9.1. Am I the only one with this problem? Alberto

KDVI can't print

Hello. I recently upgraded my KDE & KDVI altogether. It has versions Qt: 3.3.3 KDE: 3.3.0 KViewShell: 0.2 It works except that I can't print anymore, I get a crash instead. Hello List, please can anyone confirm this behaviour or better tell me waht i am doing wrong here ? konqueror and cookies not working

Hi Group, - I'm running SuSE9.1/2.6.5-7.108-default kernel with Konqueror 3.2.1, all plain vanilla. -I've noticed however, that I'm not able to properly access web-sites requiring session cookies. They don't seem to be written to disk. The problem is actually across all browsers; Firefox, Opera and even IE in CrossOver. - This leeds me to suspect a SuSE9.1 problem, not a KDE/konqueror problem. Has anyone a clue to this? PS: one small question to the experts :-) I've installed Firefox as a regular user, when I try to start it with "./firefox", I get access denied to window 0:0 and so forth. I remedy it with "xhost +localhost". Kontct Installation Problems

When I try to install then newestversion of kdepim on my suse 9.1, yast tells me, that kdepim is missing one kde-organizer lib. If i ignore it, the installation works fine and kontact works. If ithe try to install korganizer, there are all lot of unresolved dependencies. so i abort the installation. does anybody have a hint? thanx wolfgang

konsole crashing with kdebase3-3.3.0-15 SuSE 9.1

Hi dear list! Today once again I updated my kde3.3 installation with the actual packages from supplementary tree. With this there came an update from my kdebase3-3.3.0-something to kdebase3-3.3.0-15. The konsole in this package is seriously broken. started in an xterm, I get the output: X Error: BadColor (invalid Colormap parameter) 12 Major opcode: 1 Minor opcode: 0 Resource id: 0x5000001 X Error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) 3 Major opcode: 18 Minor opcode: 0 Resource id: 0x5200001 X Error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) 3 Major opcode: 18 Minor opcode: 0 [...] I don't know if this is only the case with my xorg 6.8.1 (from SuSE supplementary, too) Can reproduce on two systems (P4 /w Intel 845 Graphics and Athlon XP2800 /w NVidia GF4Ti) At the moment I'm trying to solve the problem by rebuilding the source package of kdebase3-3.3.0-15 I will post if that helps. @SuSE staff: Please try to get into this problem, anyway. Grey Message Body

I am having trouble with KMAIL. The messages I get are just grey blanks BUT if I open them in "reply" I can read them (text in green). I have tried changing fonts and setting everything to default but nothing seems to correct the problem. What's going on?

kontact crashes

Since some time (I think it started around kdelibs-3.3.0 release 8 or so) kontact crashes for me during startup (this is on suse 9.1). I have removed the kontactrc file, but that does not help. Turns out that when I edit the string in KEdit and just hit the Return key where I want to break the line, the clipboard carries that over to the greeting. By the way, /n (and \n, for that matter) doesn't work. I am running SuSE 9.1 and KDE 3.2 on a DoD machine and need to insert a required long piece of text in the greeting so that all users see it prior to logging on. How do I insert line breaks in the Greeting (in Control Center, Administrator mode) so the whole message is visible? Screensavers, X & KDE

Hi all, I know everyone has been having a problem with Xscreensavers on the updates to KDE 3.3, but did anyone lose their KDE savers with the latest updates? One in particular I know many of us liked was the new GL fireworks saver. Upon doing some investigation after updating, we managed to come up with a couple of fixes. First the problem with the xscreensavers seems to be that the kdeartwork3 files are compiled on a newer system probably running SuSE 9.2 and with the screen savers located in a different location. When compiling kdeartwork3 from source, it actually searches for the location and sets things up for that, so a simple recompile of the source will fix it on your machine without doing the symlinks. The second problem, missing KDE screen savers, was a bit more difficult to track down, but as with many things difficult, I called on Anders Johansson for help. He came through again and found it was a matter of changing a line in the .diff file which made the compile include the KDE screensavers as well. All in all, some easy fixes, but perplexing none the less! Some folks doing KDE 3.3 updates using older versions of SuSE, 8.1 or 8.2 might find several other problems as well, since much has changed from 8.x to 9.x! KDE 3.3 upgrade

Hi, I have been following the recent posts about upgrading to KDE 3.3. Most of them have been about upgrading SUSE 9.x. I am running SUSE 8.2 and I am very happy with it, but I would like to upgrade to KDE 3.3. Before I do I was just wondering if anyone here has upgraded to KDE 3.3 on their SUSE 8.2 system, and if so did you encounter any problems or difficulties? kde3.3 and k3b problem

Having just updated to kde3.3 including the new cvs version of k3b I have found that my scsi cdwriter is only detected as a reader. When I regress the k3b package back to version 0.11.9 from the new 0.11.14cvs All my drives are detected properly (ide dvdrom as dvdrom, scsi cdwriter as cdr(w), ide dvdwriter as dvdram,dvd+-r, dvd+-rw). Has anybody else had this problem? KDE 3.3 Devices problem

I recently upgraded my Suse 9.1 from 3.2.3 to 3.3, and now Konqueror does no longer show the 'devices' tab on the side. Also the devices applet in the kickerbar does no longer work. I had to manualy remove the devices applet from kickerrc settings, before kicker would actualy start. How can I fix this problem? How to upgrade off-line KDE 3.1 to KDE 3.3 on Suse 9.0

All, I have tried to upgrade my KDE3.1 to 3.3 on Suse 9.0. This failed and I tried to get some detailed instructions how to do this, especially the sequence of removing old packages and installing new ones. After my first attempt I had to perform a repair installation to get it running again. The other thing is that I have to do the upgrade off-line. KNotify not able to use wav files.

Hi folks, wondering if someone out there would know why KNotify no longer seems to be able to use wav files. It sees ogg files and the like, but none of the wav files on the system seem to be available to it. File Manager - Super User Mode stopped working in KDE 3.3 (SUSE 9.1)

Hi, I've been keeping my system up to date with Red Carpet, which has picked up a number of minor updates on KDE 3.3 recently. As of a few days ago, the 'super user' file manager has stopped working. It now produces the error message 'Could not start process Cannot talk to klauncher.' and simply yields an empty display. Any attempt to navigate to different directories or whatever produce the same message again, and a blank display. I did see a similar issue in earlier KDE 3.3 builds, where attempting to edit a file (KWrite or similar editor) from the 'super user' file manager gave a similar message and failed to open the editor. This seemed to be fixed in later builds, but now this is happening. Anyone have any idea what is happening ? Martin Farmilo

So SuSE still hasn't updated the buggy kdebase3-samba.rpm for 8.2, leaving us without the kio_smb and the very handy access to shares from within Konqueror. I decided that I could do it myself, downloaded yesterday the kdebase-3-3-0 sources from kde.org, compiled and installed all of it. After logging off and on again I noticed that the very useful 'Start new session' entry had disappeared from my K Menu, as well as from the session block dialogue. I have checked /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xservers, as well as /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers, in both of which I have the following entries: :0 local@tty1 /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp :0 vt07 :1 local@tty2 reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp :1 vt08 :2 local@tty3 reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp :2 vt09 :3 local@tty4 reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X -nolisten tcp :3 vt10 All restarting of kdm and rebooting of my machine are of no avail, the menu entry is still missing. kde3.3 kmail and gpg help

Hi all, I have just upgraded to kde 3.3 via YaST (normally do it by downloading and rpm) and apart from the broken jabber in kopete (as expected) I seem to have a different problem. With the old version of kmail and kde3.2.3 I was able to sign and encrypt messages perfectly. Now however I cannot seem to select the keys (as none are found). I have gone to the security->cryptography tab and rescanned (apart from the error on s/mime not being compiled). I do not seem to be able to configure the OpenPGP (gpg) entry. As background I have kgpg set up and it is working fine. I have gpg 1.2.2. gpg-agent is running. gpgme 0.3.16 is installed via rpm. I am using suse 8.2. gpg-config is installed. Has anybody got any ideas. Doubled entries in Kontact

Hi! I am using SuSE 9.1 pro/Kontact 0.8.1/Kaddressbook 3.2.1. Why is that all the entries in the Kaddressbook are listed twice? I checked the "standard.vcf", but there seems everything to be OK. Servertest KMail ?

Hello, Since KDE 3.2 -3.3 servertest does not work any longer, has someone also this problems. Last Updates from SuSE 3.3 brings me back, SMTP Test ? The POP/IMAP Test don't work. With some situations insert the IP brings success. Mostly however after some time, a oops of Kmail. When you insert correctly the Parameter, I mean all works corect. Not the best for new Users :(. Hi all, don't know if anyone will know this, but perhaps you can point me in the right direction. If I manually edit the $KDEHOME/share/config/kwinrc file to change some settings (in a script, for example), how can I get KDE to reread the config file? In case you're wondering, what I'm doing is I have a load of automated tests to run but some of them pop up test windows which get in the way of my work. I want to set the focus stealing prevention policy to extreme while the tests are running and then set it back to normal again when I'm finished. Alternative suggestions for approaches to this problem would also be appreciated. thanks, daveor

Evolution-1.4 and default browser

I have found a lot of info regarding setting the default browser for Evolution. What I found was that you have to use gnome control settings because Evolution is a gnome app, but all those settings check out. The gnome control panel shows Mozilla as the Default Web Browser and File types show it as well for http. But still Evolution insists on using lynx. Can anyone help? -- Robert

SuSE 9.0 / KDE 3.3 crashing after logout

Hello! There seems to be a strange problem with the KDE 3.3: I used YaST for the update to KDE 3.3, with the official SuSE-RPMs. If I try to log out now the machine crashes (freezes) just before the X-Server should end (and then the KDM normally restarts to the login window, or the PC switches to the 1st text console to reboot/halt), and it does it at nearly every logout. I use XOsview to monitor my PC - it's always open, I don't close it when logging out. (I actually never did this, and it worked great with KDE 3.1 and 3.2). Now the KDE window decoration disappears while logging out as ever, but short after that the PC freezes hard (no mouse, no keyb, no magicsysrq - hardreset...) Btw: thats very "nice" to the ReiserFS and XFS I use, in ~25% of the freezes I have to rebuild at least one ReiserFS tree, and the config files of the last open programms (Opera, Mozilla, XMMS) are also gone sometimes on the XFS partition (my /home) :( The very strange on this problem: it appears on 2 nearly completely different PCs (one Intel, one AMD) - no similarities but a Nvidia card (TNT2 / GeForce3). Speaking of the Nvidia cards - I think it's not the problem. The installed cards an drivers (which were'nt changed!) worked for the "old" KDE like a charm, and I also tried the XFree86-entry "nv" for using the build-in driver. But even after rebooting the machine (and checking for having a "not tainted" kernel) it freezed. It' also not a problem of the SuSE 9.0, while digging the crawlers one person with SuSE 8.2 reported the same freezes using KDE 3.3. Even stranger - a short test shows that a SMP machine don't crashes at that point (but doing other "funny" things). And: if I open a shell and "sync" just before loggin out the machine shuts down fast and clean, no freeze ever seen.... *konfused and unhappy* Michael

In the recent past (few days ago) I upgraded kde 3.2 to kde 3.3 using apt-get in my SuSE 9.1 distribution. I have a problem with special(accent) characters in some applications like kmail, konsole, kile; the accent characters appears as squares instead of letters. Hi, I am running KDE 3.3 (from supplementary) with Suse 9.1 professional on my laptop. My question is regarding the Laptop Battery control panel module in Kcontrol. I have checked the box that says "Show Battery Monitor". And I also click on Start Battery Monitor. However, I do not see any icons in the system tray corresponding to the Laptop Battery applet. Any idea, how to fix this? On a related note, I run kpowersave and that has it's own icon in the system tray. However, for me, kpowersave is not desired because I have two batteries - display for which is not supported well by kpowersave but only by the laptop battery module in kcontrol. Anyone experienced this before? thanks, Osho

kio_smb missing after update to KDE 3.3 (SuSE 8.2)

Hello list members: I sent this message yesterday to the SLE list, but maybe this is the appropiate place to ask my question: Today I found out that Konqueror on my SuSE 8.2 box doesn't show Samba/CIF shares, returning the following error message: "Couldn't create slave I/O process: Klauncher returned Unknown protocol 'smb'." (well, something to this account, my installation is in Spanish). My first thought was that the update to KDE 3.3 might have broken the smb protocol support in Konqueror, but I can't be sure as I didn't use that feature before the update. While looking into the problem, I found that in /opt/kde3/share/services the 'smb.protocol' file is missing, as well as the 'kio_smb.so' and 'kio_smb.la' files in /opt/kde3/lib/kde3. I further checked the kdebase3-samba.rpm provided by SuSE (August 19), and found that those files are missing from the rpm provided for the 8.2 distribution as well, while they are present on the equivalent rpm provided for version 9.1. I would think that this must be a packaging error, as KDE 3.3 on SuSE 8.2 should not differ so much from KDE 3.3 on SuSE 9.1, but I can't be sure as I haven't seen others on the lists complaining about the same problem. Has anybody else experienced the same problem after updatin SuSE 8.2 to KDE 3.3? How can I make the smb protocol support work again in Konqueror? There was a lot of discussion about RealPlayer 10 on the list about, I think, a month ago, so have a look through the archives. As far as I can recall, the instructions say that nphelix.xpt has to be in the components directory, not plugins, for it to work with Mozilla - I'm not sure how this would tie in with Konqueror.
