File Manager - Super User Mode stopped working in KDE 3.3 (SUSE 9.1)
Hi, I've been keeping my system up to date with Red Carpet, which has picked up a number of minor updates on KDE 3.3 recently. As of a few days ago, the 'super user' file manager has stopped working. It now produces the error message 'Could not start process Cannot talk to klauncher.' and simply yields an empty display. Any attempt to navigate to different directories or whatever produce the same message again, and a blank display. I did see a similar issue in earlier KDE 3.3 builds, where attempting to edit a file (KWrite or similar editor) from the 'super user' file manager gave a similar message and failed to open the editor. This seemed to be fixed in later builds, but now this is happening. Anyone have any idea what is happening ? Martin Farmilo

Martin, Have you restarted KDE after running "ldconfig" and /sbin/SuSEconfig? I think what you might be running into here is just old stuff trying to run with new stuff and usually a restart of KDE will do the trick. Remember, RC doesn't run those programs after installing, you have to do those manually. You should do ctrl-alt-F1 to the terminal, log in as root, run "init 3" then "init 5" to return to kde. That should get you going again. Lee -- --- KMail v1.7 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.1 --- Registered Linux User #225206 Those Who Dance Are Considered Insane, by Those Who Cannot Hear the Music!
Fixed it ! I cleared out the /tmp folder of kde files for my main user. Logged back in, tried again and no error now. Thanks for your help ....

My problem was that this would not even start. I solved this by going to the console with Ctrl-Alt-F1, logged in as root, ran init 3, entered /var/tmp and removed the directory "kdecache-root". I also rename the /root/.kde folder. Then I ran init 5, logged in normally and File Manager - Super User works again. Make copies if you are unsure when deleting. This worked for me, I may have done more than what was necessary, but hey, won't know till we try. Hope this helps. /Carl
