Hi all, I know everyone has been having a problem with Xscreensavers on the updates to KDE 3.3, but did anyone lose their KDE savers with the latest updates? One in particular I know many of us liked was the new GL fireworks saver. Upon doing some investigation after updating, we managed to come up with a couple of fixes. First the problem with the xscreensavers seems to be that the kdeartwork3 files are compiled on a newer system probably running SuSE 9.2 and with the screen savers located in a different location. When compiling kdeartwork3 from source, it actually searches for the location and sets things up for that, so a simple recompile of the source will fix it on your machine without doing the symlinks. The second problem, missing KDE screen savers, was a bit more difficult to track down, but as with many things difficult, I called on Anders Johansson for help. He came through again and found it was a matter of changing a line in the .diff file which made the compile include the KDE screensavers as well. All in all, some easy fixes, but perplexing none the less! Some folks doing KDE 3.3 updates using older versions of SuSE, 8.1 or 8.2 might find several other problems as well, since much has changed from 8.x to 9.x! What's the fix if you don't compile the source, but get updates via Red Carpet? Fred -- "Running Windows on a Pentium is like getting a Porsche but only being able to drive it in reverse with the handbrake on."

Fred, I thought maybe I could send them to you via email, but the kdeartwork3 is 21mb+, so that won't do. If you have someplace I can upload the files, I'll be happy to do that for you. It's possible also that we could meet on IRC and I could pass them along there. Just let me know what you would prefer. Lee

'Apprecieate the thought. My ISP only allows 16MB and I have no place for you to u'l it. I'll just use another screen saver till they finally get the bug out of it and can get an update via Red Carpet. Thanks! Have you tried this?? http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-Aug/3276.html Basically re-establishing the proper links to the sources used, it works great Always check the archives, ALL of the archives the answer is out there -----Original Message----- From: Fred Miller [mailto:fmiller@lightlink.com] Sent: Thursday, September 16, 2004 5:21 PM To: suse-kde@suse.com Subject: Re: [suse-kde] Screensavers, X & KDE On Thursday September 16 2004 5:00 pm, BandiPat wrote: [snip]

Sure LeRoy, that's easy enough to get the Xscreensavers working again, but it doesn't fix the KDE screensaver problem, plus you have some extra symlinks hanging about after the problem is fixed. If you are not interested in the KDE savers, then a simple recompile of the source rpm will fix the X savers. Lee
May be irrelevant, but I found that the KDE-3.3.0 version of "kxsrun" was the problem. I copied "kxsrun" from KDE-3.2.3 into /opt/kde3/bin and ALL the screensavers are working now. Hope this helps. /Carl On Thursday 16 September 2004 21:07, BandiPat wrote:
