SuSE 9.2 Pro and Touchpad Issues

Hello all, Just received my copy of SuSE 9.2 Pro and completed a clean install on my Toshiba Satellite 2435 laptop. For whatever reason, the laptop's touchpad was not detected/installed correctly. Using the laptop has become extremely difficult. The mouse opens *almost* every window and app that it trails over and hardware clicking/tapping doesn't work. I don't recall what driver I've used in the past with SuSE and this laptop--truth is, I never looked. Currently I'm using the generic PS/2 Mouse (Aux-Port) driver as indicated in the Hardware section of YaST's Control Center and the touchpad is somewhat functional, albeit with irritating side effects. With previous versions of SuSE the touchpad was detected/configured correctly and without my intervention. Anyone using SuSE 9.2 with a similar machine? Searches on SuSE's Support Portal turned up zero articles related to ALPS Touchpad devices. konqueror "document relations"

Hello together, After upgrading my SuSE 9.2 to KDE 3.3.2 I observe some strange behaviour on new user accounts: When opening a new konqueror (no matter whether openProfile filemanagement or webbrowsing) I get on the left side of the konqueror window a toolbar called "document relations"; to be correct: Dokumentenbeziehungen (Konqueror). When I open konqueror twice, this tool bar doubles, triples, etc.... !!!! Until the window is nearly full. I tried to attach a jpg showing this, but unfortunately the file size is limited to 20.000 bytes. It is really annoying. Is it a feature or a bug? It only happens in new user accounts, accounts created under 3.3.1 and before are not concerned. Any ideas? Help is welcome.. Thanks and regards, Udo

For the last couple of days I have been getting unwarranted messages from the German ISP Freenet.de with the following subject line: "AutoReply: Vielen Dank für Ihre Nachricht". It is basically a spam message showing links to several pages of freenet.de, crafted as if it was a reply to some message of mine asking for support. My impression is that I receive those message every time I send a message to this list, so I suspect that someone at freenet.de may have set up a list account just so it may send an automated message to everybody who is sending mail to the list. fix: kmail problems w/ preview pane on IMAP account

Hi dear list! Some days ago, I reported a problem with the message preview pane when using IMAP. Mathias Homann pointed me to the KDE bugreport he created: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=94184 In this bugreport there is stated a solution to this problem. I now made new kdepim3 packages which are identical to the SuSE kdepim3-3.3.2-3 packages, they just differ by adding the patch from the KDE bug 94184. Richard Bos provided a lot of his knowledge, time and bandwith to get me building fine packages and to get these packages hosted on the ftp mirror of gwdg.de. Thank you Richard! Manually mounting USB devices

I've got a Rio Cali MP3 player that I hooked up to my SuSE 9.1 box running KDE. The first time I connected it, it noted that I had and displayed a Konqueror window showing its contents. Later, I attempted to copy some files to it and the X server hung. After a CTRL-ALT-Backspace and I logged in again, I plugged the Cali in again and nothing happens. What might I have hosed up that would keep SuSE Plugger from seeing the device when it's plugged in? How can I manually mount the device? I know how to use the mount command, but how do I determine which block device in /dev it is? I guess I'm looking for a more general answer that I can apply to any future event like this one. Thanks. kmail always starting at logon...

Hi guys, Since a few days, kmail is always starting at logon, while i'm 100% sure i've closed all applications before logoff. Also i don't use kmail as standalone, i'm using Kontakt... Does somebody know what's happening here ? Undefined Mode

I have a problem that started after installing a new kernel. After the "Boot Options" screen, I now get a message saying; "You passed an undefined mode number. Press return or wait 30 seconds etc..." Can someone explain to me how to fix this. Please make reply simple for a ex-Winxxx user!

PRINTER FONT: SIZE *TOO* TINY

Happy Holidays All! I know someone on this list can deal with this: Something (operator airhead?) has reset the default print font size to approx. 6 or 7 point size. Far too tiny to read usefully. Using SuSE 9.1 Pro w/KDE as window manager. Printer is HP LaserJet 4Si. Have "cold" re-set plrinter twice. Looking in my ~/.kde/share/" . . . rc" config files shows nothing that allows for the actual size of the *printed* type, only the size when viewed in the respective application (i.e. Konqueror, etc., etc.) Should also mention that I recently (30 days) updated to KDE 3.3.2 fork from SuSE site. kmail: IMAP and preview pane

Hi dear list members! Does anybody of you use kmail with IMAP? Since KDE 3.3.1 (I think) I have the problem, that (approx.) every 10th mail I select, the preview is not shown, the preview page remains empty. I now use kde 3.3.2 (actual SuSE supplemetary for SuSE 9.1) and the problem persists. There are no messages on stdout or stderr which seem to belong to the problem. I tried with a completely new user to check if it is an update problem, but it isn't. Any thoughts about that? Thanks for helping! File already exists error after login (KDE 3.3.2)

HI! Since upgrading my Suse 9.0 to KDE 3.3.2, I get a "file already exists" dialog after login (at the end of the login procedure). Someone wants to copy "/opt/kde3/share/apps/susewatcher/update-informations.desktop" to "/tmp/kde-thomas/Desktop-0/update-informations.desktop". Both files are supposed to have the same length and the same date. Strange thing is, the destination file does NOT exist. I can click on "overwrite" and the dialog disappears. Next time I login, the same happens. What's that? Thanks! Thomas

I co-worker has a powerbook running OSX, and it has this fancy little aquarium screen saver that's extremely realistic. He claims that's one thing his machine can do better than Linux... I want to shut him up :) Running KDE 3.3.1 and SuSE 9.2.

Well, thanks for all the help. I tried the things suggested, but none of them seemed to get me any further. So, I decided to scratch the installation and try again. It isn't as bad ass it sounds, I just built the thing a couple of weeks ago, so I didn't have time to do any sigificant amount of work on it. The up side is that I learned to be very careful about kernel and video driver updates in the future. Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions. KDE not Starting

This morning I started my SuSE 9.1/KDE 3.2 box and it goes through the boot process but leaves me at the 'linux login:' prompt in a text console when it should have started KDE. I logged in a root and did an 'init 5' and it put several things up on the screen, displayed the nvidia splash screen and returned to the text console. What do I need to do to get KDE running again? Hi I just upgrade my system to SuSE 9.2 Pro, and I am having trouble with GTK application who used to work flawlessly. Refreshing desktop

After copying a file to ~/Desktop using shell cp command, or moving it, renaming, whatever, KDE desktop doesn't reflect the changes. I recently switched from Mandrake to SuSE and I really miss that feature. I believe Mdk uses some file change listener daemon, I cannot remember how it's called right now. Is there anything similar for SuSE (9.2)? I see fam daemon installed but there's no script in /etc/init.d to start it at boot. Regards, Davor

I don't find this file in either my directory or in root's home folder. Please note that it isn't even getting to the point of displaying the KDE login screen, so I'm not sure I understand how a file in my home directory would affect it anyway. That's why I decided to look in the root folder. Any other thoughts? hallo liste, ich habe ein problem mit dem drucken als user unter kde 3.2.1 : ich kann als user nicht drucken. jedes programm, das auf eine druckinstanz zugreift, stürzt ab und muss beendet werden . beim suchen nach fehlerquellen stoße ich immer wieder im kontrollzentrum unter kde-komponenten und dann diensteverwaltung auf den eintrag, das der kde-druckerdeamon nicht gestartet sei. wie kann ich dieses denn beheben?? suse 9.1 pro mfg sebastian

Applications dying randomly in KDE 3.3.2

Hi all, I am running KDE 3.3.2 on SuSE 9.2. Recently I noticed that applications abruptly just die, no error, the KDE crash handler doesn't show up and I didn't notice any correlation with keyboard, mouse or hard disk events. I have seen this happen with kmail, amarok and kdetv. The window just closes without warning. Has anybody else seen this? This is very disturbing and I hope limited to my instalation. Brana

kmail folder sorting

In SuSE 9.2 kmail sorts some of the mail folders in the folder list window alphabetically and with a blue older icon, like in SuSE 9.1. The problem is that a number of other folders are lumped in with kmail's private folders like inbox/outbox, and they have the same blue folder icon but with a green arrow underneath it. Why does kmail arbitrarily decide not to sort some folders in with the rest of them? Is there a fix? X-server crash during new HW recognition/configuration and freeze up of Mozilla, firefox and thunderbird with later update of suse 9.1 and new 9.2

hi all since late suse 9.1 and now on suse 9.2 i have repeated apps freeze up for apps like Mozilla, firefox and thunderbird mail editor ( every session !! ) to lesser degree evolution mail editor on my Acer TravelMate 6003LCi always current YOU update the problem started about 6-8 weeks ago and was NEVER encountered on suse early 9.0 or any other version before one more x-server problem - may be same cause ? new USB mouse or other USB hardware such as my wacom tablet intuos2 if i connect new a.m. hardware the pop up appears "new hardware discovered" do you want to configure ... when i click YES -- i get an instant X-server crash each time for both a.m. HW since it never occurred before ... could it be that it is caused by the new suse used xorg instead of the previous xfree86 ? what about changing from xorg back to xfree86 ?? any experience and if YES which packages need to be exchanged ? Google search so far has no results the problem with apps freeze up occurs permanently - MANY times a day sometimes after a few URLs of browsing after minutes soemtimes it takes as much as 10 or more minutes - again and again sometimes even without activity - just after a break of several minutes the problem with email editor freeze up occurs almost ever email - after a few lines or any time later during writing mails any help welcome Christmas greetings to all hans -- Cyberspace Ashram http://www.kriyayoga.com

Screen saver session turns blank ("white")

Hi, Configuring with KDE, my screen saver starts (say with Forest) correctly but after a couple of minutes the screen turns out blank - I mean "white" (with quotes) because is not really white color but a white brightness with a darker periphery. With typing or mouse movement the normal screen (not the screen saver images) comes back. KKDE 3.3.2 forget the "most used Application"

Hello, I have a very uncomfortable behavior for my new updated KDE3.3.2 (under SuSE9.1) >From time to time, when I open the Kmenu, the area for the "Most used Applications" is reduced to the last open Application. During this session appears the last ones like the setting for this issue is: remember the last 6 applications. This can running OK, but suddenly even few days later, this area "Most used Applications" is reduced to the last one again. I will appreciate feedback to solve this malfunction. Yast and KDE 3.3.2 update

HI! Every time I start yast to refresh the KDE 3.3.2 upgrade (update selections "KDE desktop" and "KDE development") on my Suse 9.0, it either - installs kdegraphics3 3.3.2, cryptplug 0.3.16 and kdenetwork3-mail 3.1.4 - uninstalls kgamma 1.0.1 or - installs kdepim3 3.3.2, kgamma 1.0.1 - uninstalls cryptplug 0.3.16, kdenetwork3-mail 3.1.4 Each time, it alternates between those 2 possibilities. But which one is correct? I guess, the 2nd. And why does it do this? Thanks! Thomas

KDE 3.3.2 - no system sounds after updating

Hello everyone, I hope some of you can help me. Yesterday I updated from KDE 3.3.0 to 3.3.2 on SUSE Linux 9.2 but since then, KDE doesn't play system sounds. My first guess was, that something could be wrong with the pathes to the sound files, but they're on the right place. When I type in (for example) 'artsplay /opt/kde3/share/sounds/KDE_Startup_3.ogg' everything works fine, so what could it be? If you need additional information, please ask. Thanks, Chris Mager.

KDE sounds

Just wondering, I know many of you guys don't like the sounds you can turn on in KDE for window actions, system notifications, etc., so you turn them off. I tend to go the other way though and usually have several that are on. That is until recently, as they seem to have quit working. All other sounds work. I can play individual sounds, play oggs, mp3s, etc. everything else, it's just the KDE sounds that won't play! Anyone else noticed this little bug? It seems to have started since the last few KDE updates. I have tried going back to the earlier arts files, which were the latest in the kde mirrors, but that doesn't seem to correct things, so unsure what it might be at this point. It could be something with the new KDE 3.3.2 files, but haven't yet reverted back to the earlier ones to test that theory. Anyone else noticed this? Attempted to correct it and if you were successful, what steps did you take? As I mentioned, this is ONLY the KDE sound notifications, nothing else, all other sound functions work as usual. TIA, Lee

Restoring desktop icons

I mistakenly deleted the system icons from the desktop. I had a backup, but while I was waiting for the backup to uncompressed, it backed up again over top and they were gone. I don't have any self-made icons, just want to get back the defaults. Can I do this? And how? -- Robert

Everything seems to be running fine so far, but when I opened the control to look at my video settings I got this error message in YasT: "To access the X11 system, the XFree86 package must be installed. Do you want to install it now?" ?? Huh ?? If XFree86 is not a part of (current) running filesys, then is Xorg supporting all graphics independently? I'm using a Viewsonic P225fb (22") w/ ATI Radeon 7500 and getting edge-to-edge display at 1600X1200---no problem; rock steady. How to deal with this? Re-install from 9.1 Pro DVD, Then maybe YOU update to newer security & other XFree86 patches or.....? Any suggestions or someone who had same problem?? hi all suse user seit 1998 regelmässige updates ohne unlösbare probleme jetzt seit ein paar wochen auf Acer TravelMate 6003LCi mit suse 9.1 und seit update vor einigen tagen auch mit 9.2 immer aktuellstes YOU update ! folgende regelmmässigen probleme: jede mozilla session oder firefox session endet frueher ( innert minuten, nach 5-10 URLs / tabs ) oder später nach einigen dutzend URLs/tabs mit einem browser freeze up nur noch kill hilft natürlich verwende ich jeweils aktuellste versionen der browser software !! ähnliches mir thunderbird mail editor mitten im schreiben eines mails freeze up - so gut wie jedesmal diese probleme habe bei suse 9.1 vor ca 1.5 bis 2 monaten angefangen - vorher NIE und diese probleme gehen uach unter 9.2 unverändert weiter in beiden o.g. situation NUR jeweils die applikations-fenster freeze up - kein komplettes freeze up weiteres x-server problem - eventuell im gleichen zusammenhang ? neue USB mouse oder andere USB hardware wie wacom tablet habe vor kurzem eine neue mouse gekauft wenn YAST sie erkennt und das pop up kommt mit "new hardware discovered" do you want to configure ... wenn ich JA klicke -- dann sofort X-server crash jedesmal gleiches ist vor tagen passiert mit WACOM inutos2 tablet eingesteckt, hardware erkennung kommt mit pop-up wie oben klick ich ja, dann sofort x-server crash wie mit mouse könnte das daran liegen dass suse nun xorg statt x86free verwendet ? oder hat jemand anders äehnliches erfahren und gelöst suche in Google etc war bis jetzt erfolglos hilfe willkommen fröhliche Weihnachtszeit hans -- Cyberspace Ashram http://www.kriyayoga.com

After recompiling the "arts" package from SuSE's src.rpm, my problem disappeared with the kde sounds not working. My guess is that whatever SuSE machine arts was compiled on, had something slightly different than we all have installed. Arts compiled with their files making some small incompatibility with our systems. Not the first time something of this nature has occurred, but easily fixable. Should anyone want the new rpms, send me a private mail and I'll be happy to upload to you or you can compile your own or you can wait for the next builds from SuSE, if that would please you more. How smooth is the KDE update from the "supplementary branch"?

Hi there, I've never updated KDE from the supplementary branch on the ftp server so far and would like to give it a try, updating KDE 3.1.4 on SuSE 9.0 to 3.3. Do the packages from the supplementary KDE update break anything, e.g. susewathcer? No 3th keyboard notation (after update to 3.3.2)

Hi all, After update to the newest version of KDE (yast; supplemantary tree) i have problems with 3th notation on my keyboard (signs: @{[]}| ). When i start control center and do a dummy change of keyboardtype "Generic 104-keys" --> "Generic 104-keys" and then apply this change, the signs of the 3th notation are avalilable again. After i close a session and open a new one (logout+login), no signs for 3th notation are avaliable. So now i must after each login the dummy change in control center to have all signs. Have just installed the suse 8.2 updates to KDE 3.3.2. It seems that the SMB stuff is missing again from the rpm!!!! I downloaded the kdebase3-samba rpm for 9.2 and installed that to get the smb protocol working. Network Configuration

I'm a new to linux. Have installed Suse 9.2 Pro and cannot browse the Windows network in my office. When I click the Network Browsing icon I see the Windows network. Clicking on the Windows icon gets me to my local Windows workgroup. The "@home network" ( my local workgroup) icon shows Type: Windows Workgroup, no owner, and permissions of dr-xr-xr-x. When I click that icon I get a message that Could not connect to host for smb://home network/ I've tried iwth Network Services enabled and disabled. I've read the documentation several times over, but cannot figure out what I have done wrong. Any ideas? Thanks. JFuller / Nashville

KDE vs. Gnome: Putting KDE In Charge

Hi, This is a follow-on to my previous message / thread, "Gnome Application Appearance Under KDE." I've tried several of the suggestions given there, but none produce the desired results. For one thing, the appearance that was displayed by Gnome applications when run under KDE cannot (seem to be) replicated any more, regardless of which Gnome theme I select. Secondly, Gnome settings are affecting the appearance of KDE applications. And lastly, Gnome settings are not persistent, unless I place the following "gsd.desktop" file suggested by Trey Sizemore into "~/.kde/Autostart/": -==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==- [Desktop Entry] Name=gnome-settings-daemon Exec=gnome-settings-daemon \ --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon Terminal=false Type=Application -==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==- (As with Trey's post, the "Exec=" line wrapped in the email. I've signified that with the backslash, but I don't know offhand whether the KDE desktop file parser treats those as a shell would.) If I include this file, then the Gnome settings are activated upon KDE login, but I'm pretty sure this is not how things were working before the latest YaST-supplied updates (from the supplementary for 9.1 repository). I say that because with this .desktop file in the KDE Autostart directory, I see a taskbar tile corresponding to this application, but it just stays there displaying the "bouncing cursor" until the launch feedback times out. I never saw that before. The most salient effect (possibly the only one) that the establishment of the Gnome settings has is to shrink all the font displays _in KDE applications_. Perhaps this is due to Gnome altering the monitor resolution setting that had previously been in effect. While this makes Gnome applications appear in a more normal size (as in, more like what I was used to), it makes KDE applications display fonts too small. I can still read them and, of course, can reconfigure the applications, but I really don't want to do this. Does anyone have definitive information (or a reference to such information) on how KDE and Gnome interact? And most of all, can anyone tell me how to keep Gnome from affecting KDE? I really want KDE to be in charge and I need something better than the Gnome / GTK defaults that are now being displayed by Gnome applications when running under KDE. The old way was much to my liking and this new situation is barely tolerable. Thanks in advance for any information anyone can supply. Randall Schulz

SuSE 9.2, KDE 3.3, nVidia - fonts too large!

Hi all, I have just installed SuSE 9.2 on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 8600 with nvidia GeForce 5200 Go). Initially I set up X11 with the "nv" driver (no 3D support) for a resolution of 1680x1050...all looked perfect. I then upgraded to the "nvidia" driver (incl. 3D support) and suddenly all of the fonts in KDE are huge ! I can set them to a smaller size...but they are still too large and some screens seem to ignore my settings and just display massive fonts! I am assuming that this has something to do with the proper nvidia driver ? Has anyone experienced this and found a fix? printing landscape document

Hi all, I have a document (PS) in landscape orientation and want to print it on my HP LJ6L, but no matter what I do I can't rotate the printout so that it comes out in portrait orientation on the paper. I use kprinter as print program, but changing the orientation in the properties dialog doesn't change anything. Just for completeliness: I print from inkscape, print command line in the program is configured as "| kprinter". I can print to a file, load it into gv, change the orientation there, but still it is printed in landscape and doesn't fit on the paper. Regards Mario

Gnome Application Appearance Under KDE

Hi, Yesterday I applied the latest round of supplementary KDE updates available for SuSE Pro. 9.1. Since that update, the appearance of Gnome applications run under KDE has changed--and not generally for the better, in my opinion: Buttons, borders, pseudo-3D effects, etc. all appear cruder now than they did before. Assuming this change and the general appearance of Gnome applications under KDE is configurable, how do I exercise that control? I went through the entire KDE Control Center and couldn't find anything. Must I log in to a Gnome session to set this up? I'm not a Gnome user and know very little about it, though, of course, I use several Gnome applications under KDE. Thanks in advance. Randall Schulz

yast online update

hi, today I have done a Yast-Online-Update on my system to get the newest patches. but now I can't do a Yast-System-Update. When I start Yast-System-Update I can select the updates, change the backup settings, but when I want to start the download and installation the window is closed and nothing is done. I don't know where the problem is, because since the latest update, their were no problems. thanks for help! alexander teske
