Library problems with KDE3.1 under SuSE 7.2

Hello. I've recently installed KDE3.1 on my SuSE 7.2 system, and I've encountered some difficulties. Whenever I right click the pager and choose "Configure Virtual Desktops", I get a popup window that says: "There was an error loading the module". The diagnostics line reads: 'Library files for "libkcm_konq.la" not found in paths' I get a similar message if I right click the desktop and choose "Configure Desktop", and then pick the "Desktop" item from the list on the left. Why is libkcm_konq.la missing? Did I forget to install something, is something misconfigured, or is there a file missing in the distribution? -John

kmail configuration dissapeared from menu (in latest snapshot)

Hi, in order to modify my Email accounts I tried to enter the configuration in the kmail menu, but it was gone. Is that just my installation of the almost latest (post release) snapshot, or has somebody seen (and hopefully solved) this? (SuSE 8.1 with the kde.org kde3 release rpms installed and some compiled snapshots after it.) It is of course possible to edit the kmailrc files manually, but that is surely not the way it was meant to be ;-) Thanks, Matt T.

Login Manager & KDE3.1

OK I am back with a newly installed 8.0 system. Yast2 works in graphical mode after installing qt3-non-mt. Current problem - I changed the Login Manager background using Control Centre. Now I get a list of groups/users (dialout etc) at the login screen. I can't then login as the system hangs after accepting my password. Need to kill xserver, login via text based console and then startx. When back in KDE I tried going back to the default background. But changes made don't appear to be saved and when rebooting I get the same login problem. Help Phil

KDE 3.1, Yast2 and xv

Hi folks, three issues, running Suse 8.0 with KDE 3.1 and having few problems. i) still unable to run Yast2 as a graphic program under KDE 3.1. a window appear asking for root pwd , generates a PID, but no Yast to use. did all stuff mentioned previously but installing qt3-non-mt (together with qt3 on suse kde website?), which I will try later... ii) still unable to set desktop properties in KDE Control Module >>There was an error loading module >>'SuSE/Settings/LookNFeel/desktop.desktop' >>The diagnostics is: >>Library files for "libkcm_konq.la" not found in paths iii) xv crashes now (after KDE 3.1) when trying to grab an area in the desktop, >>X Error: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied) >> Major Opcode: 28 solutions to any of these are much welcome, thanks for helping

Virtual Desktops not conveniently switchable

Hello all, sorry for posting this in German at first. I mixed this up when I posted to a German list before. Here's *not* my tranlation because I understand the problem now: In KDE 3.1 the numbering order of virtual desktops changes between two orientations of kicker. Let's have an example with 12 desktops as I have configured. KDE2: 1 3 5 7 9 11 2 4 6 8 10 12 This arrangement remains constantly with no concern to position of kicker (vertical/horizontal). In contrast to the KDE2-related behaviour KDE3 rearranges the desktop numbering according to kicker orientation as follows: KDE3 with vertically oriented kicker: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 KDE3 with kicker oriented horizontally: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 While changing the arrangement geometry is just a bit strange (you could forget the desktop switcher in kicker or simply remove it) the shortcut-to-number-mapping is really inconvenient, because one has to rearrange his/her imagination of desktops in mind. An Example: Suppose you are on Desktop 1. While "Desktop up/down" for vertical arrangement switches between 1 and 3 the same shortcut for horizontal arrangement switches between 1 and 7. Having the horizontal arrangement in mind it's really confusing to use a vertical oriented kicker. A related problem is with the program kpager and vertical oriented kicker. While in kpager the desktop arrangement is constant and matches with a horizontal oriented kicker users of kpager have a permanent mismatch of desktop arrangements. For those one the only workaround at the moment would be to orient the kicker to horizontal position. But note that KDE3 also rearranges the virtual desktops when you change the kicker geometry, e.g to enable smaller icons. With a slim kicker the arrangement would be 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 and therefore the up/down shortcut wouldn't work until the kicker's height returns to "Normal" (related to icon size). To make kpager reorientable obviously wouldn't help because it would not rearrange the orientation in mind. So my appeal to KDE developers for KDE3.2 is: Please let the desktop arrangement and shortcut-to-number-mapping remain constantly if the user wishes it. Even a better suggestion: Let the user choose an arrangement not bound to the kicker geometry, e.g. two lines: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 three lines: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 May be this isn't the suitable place - if so, would anyone please tell me the right one? BTW: I would like to suggest that instead of desktop numbers a kpager should appear in the center of the screen whenever one switches the desktop with a shortcut. This would increase the convenience of visual desktop handling. An additional proposal is to embed a kpager to the desktop switcher on kicker that comes up whenever one points with the mouse on it. So mouse users could switch between desktops more convenient than it's possible with a rolling up kpager window always in front (my current window configuration for kpager). arial font konqueror

Hello, I seem to have a problem with the font "Arial" in konqueror. All typical German characters (e.g. umlaute as ü ä ...) are simply left out on webpages as well as on file and directory names. There is no such problem with Helvetica or e.g. any of the Nimbus fonts. For filenames, i can simply change the standard font of the file manager to helvetica. But I can't browse a webpage that formats its text as arial (eg www.yahoo.de). I run Suse 8.1, to which I upgraded from Suse 7.3. I never tried to manipulate any fontsettings on the box manually, and the problem did not arise in the prior 7.3 install. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks, Alex

So now I do it this way with YAST2 without dependencie problems. :o) The problem is with kdeinit, I found out that it is responsible for loading KDE and for applications in KDE. Konqueror anomally

Hi all, I am wondering if anyone else has noticed this in their new Konq 3.1? It is working great for all sites and I find myself using it for 99% of my browsing, but the bug appears when downloading a file/s. When you start a download, your point usually gets a little clock attached to it until it finishes or starts, then goes away. Mine is staying on now, until I close down that sesson of Konq. Not a biggy, but it shouldn't be doing that. Anyone else seeing that too? KDE on SuSe 8.0 Pro.

Hi list, I consider myself new to Linux since i started using Linux in August of 2002. First i must point out to you the fact that my system has no upgrades or patches on it that fixes some bugs, this is because my system is not connected to the internet, and i see no reason to install those patches. After i installed the following packages of KDE 3.1: kdebase3 kdelibs3 qt3 qt3-non-mt And then rebooted the system to see how KDE 3.1 looks like, but when the system came at the point to schow me the login screen it just flashes a few times. Then goes back with this on it: Linux login: After i loged in i tryed to start KDE with this command: startkde But no luck, i get a message with a number of complaints. To me when i look at the message i can see only one problem, this is a part of the message: startkde: Could not startkdeinit.Check your installation. Error: Can't open display. Warning: connect ( ) failed: no such file or directory. startkde: Shutting down ... Warning: connect ( ) failed: no such file or directory. Error: Can't contact kdeinit ! To me it looks like a problem with kdeinit, as i sayed before this computer has no connection to the internet. To install KDE 3.1 i downloaded the packages on another computer and burnt them on a cd-rw, these packages i copieed to /home/xxx/Documents. And then installed them with YAST2 using the following command in Kconsole: yast -i /home/xxx/Documents/<package>.rpm When i had closed Kconsole i wanted to open it again, but there was a message saying something about kdeinit. I searched the list but could not find the sollution to my problem, i also searched on suse-linux-e without any luck. Who can help me with this ? What must i do to get KDE 3.1 up and running ? All Thank you for all your suggestions. Unfortunately, none of them helped the situation. This was a new SuSE installation so I had not spent a lot of time configuring it so I am going to start again with a new installation. I will let you know how I get on. Thanks again Phil Harrison

Problem with gtk apps in kde

Hi, I am a newbie to linux and have recently installed SuSE 8.1. I run it with KDE. Now, some applications start with totally screwed windows and no fonts (but they start). Some examples are Gimp, Ethereal, Gqview, Grip. As far as I understand these are gtk+ applications, So I thought I might be missing the correct libraries. But in the Software Install section of YaST2 both gtk+ and glib are installed. Is there maybe a problem with the path? maybe with the fonts? Although I doubt the latter. Gimp starts with a window that is ca. 1 1/2 screens high and 1/8 screen wide. Any suggestions ? Kostas

KMail message conversion?

All, I opened KMail a few minutes ago, and glancing at my inbox I saw some new messages, including one from Daimler-Chrysler (I used to lease an Intrepid). I clicked on it to have a brief look, before deleting it. As soon as I clicked, the contents flashed for a moment in the message pane and then vanished. In the inbox list, the Subject, Sender and Date changed to "No Subject Unknown Unknown". I clicked on the message immediately below, and the same thing happened. I exited KMail and re-launched. The two messages still show "No Subject Unknown Unknown", and have no contents. Clicking on other messages, now, does not seem to cause the strange effect. Is this normal/expected behavior? /kevin

Hi Phil! Please reply to list. You surely agree, that the solution could be interesting for more people beside you, don't you? I think when you use the graphical link from your kde menue, then kde tries to start yast2 as a kcontrol module (like "kdesu kcmshell YaST/Misc/yast2" on my 7.3). With KDE 3.1 some things have changed here and I think that's not possible anymore. Please check on your system and change the properties of the link to execute "kdesu yast2". This should fix things. KGhostview zeigt manche PDF-Dateien nicht an

Hallo zusammen, schon unter KDE2 konnte ich mit kghostview PDF-Dateien, die ich von der Bundesversicherungsanstalt heruntergeladen habe, nicht anschauen. Die Fehlermeldung lautet: Öffnen der Datei <PDF-Datei> nicht möglich. Was kann die Ursache sein? NB.: Mit acroread kann ich alle anzeigen, aber manche mehrseitige nicht ausdrucken, obwohl ich mir Acrobat Reader 5 installiert habe. Bin für keden Rat dankbar! Gruß Thomas Michalka

Virtuelle Desktops nicht umschaltbar

Hallo zusammen, in KDE 3.1 hat sich offenbar die Nummerierungsreihenfolge der virtuellen Desktops, wie sie z.B. im klassischen Zweizeiler von kpager sichtbar werden, geändert. Bei mir sind es 12 Stück. KDE2: 1 3 5 7 9 11 2 4 6 8 10 12 KDE3: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 Bei mir ergibt z.B. "Desktop rauf/runter" einen Wechsel zwischen 1 und 2, so wie das unter KDE2 auch richtig war. Entweder ist der kpager schon auf die "neue", aber falsche Reihenfolge, umgestellt, obwohl das Mapping der Tastenkürzel auf die Nummern sich gar nicht ändern sollte, oder das Mapping der Konfiguration der Tastenkürzel "Desktop rauf", "Desktop runter", "Desktop links", "Desktop rechts" auf die neue Nummerierungsreihenfolge wurde schlicht und einfach vergessen. Kennt jemand einen Workaround, so daß man dennoch mittels Tastatur den Desktop schnell wechseln kann? Schöne Grüße Thomas Michalka

Dämonischer Druck in KDE 3.1?

Hallo liebe "Liste-ner", als ich gerade über kprinter drucken will, bekomme ich die Fehlermeldung, daß der kdeprintd nicht läuft. Ich denke, daß ich da sicher was zu konfigurieren vergessen habe, aber im Kontrollzentrum/Druckerkonfiguration finde ich nichts, was ich weiter konfigurieren könnte. Außerdem meine ich doch, daß irgendwelche Druckdämonen beim KDE-Start automatisch gestartet werden müßten, oder? Folgende locate-Ausgaben erhalte ich: $> locate kdeprintd /opt/kde2/lib/kde2/libkded_kdeprintd.la /opt/kde2/lib/kde2/libkded_kdeprintd.so /opt/kde2/share/services/kded/kdeprintd.desktop /opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kded_kdeprintd.la /opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kded_kdeprintd.so /opt/kde3/share/services/kded/kdeprintd.desktop kdeprintd unter kde3 ist also installiert, was nu? Folgende Ausgabe habe ich veranlaßt, weil eine Fehlermeldung kam, als ich nach der Auswahl der Druckerkonfiguration in den Systemverwaltungsmodus wechseln wollte: kdeprint_lpd.la konnte nicht gefunden werden - gibt's bei mir unter kde3 auch nicht, wie man sieht: $> locate kdeprint_lpd.la /opt/kde2/lib/kde2/libkdeprint_lpd.la Die Frage ist, wo bekommt man diese Library für KDE 3.1 her? Jetzt habe ich doch noch was zum Konfigurieren gefunden (warum das allerdings nötig sein soll, verstehe ich nicht, denn mein Drucker und der CUPS-Server ist schon seit SuSE 7.3 eingerichtet und funktioniert ja auch), nämlich unter + Angeschlossene Geräte + Drucker --> ausgewählt LaserJet6P + Reiter "Eigenschaften" Wenn ich da den Treiber einstellen möchte, bekomme ich ieder diese Meldung über den fehlenden kdprintd. Das schein also das zentrale Problem zu sein. Nur, wer startet diesen normalerweise, oder wie kann ich das selber erreichen? Für jedwede Hilfe bin ich sehr dankbar! Viele Grüße, Thomas Michalka

different openmotif-versions in KDE3.1

Hi All, I've installed KDE 3.1 on SuSE 8.1 and it works just fine. The only problem I have is that a program I have to use requires openmotif2.1.30MLI4-288. But KDE 3.1 comes with openmotif-2.2.2-111 which causes my program to fail. The later version is required by some kdebase-packages so I don't really want to uninstall it. Whenever I try to install the older version, yast shows me that the older version will be updated automatically to the newer version! Is there a way to keep the older version in parallel? Or can I force KDE to use the older version or is the new one substantial to kde 3.1? Thanks Matthias

File Manager Problems with 3.1

I am still having problems with File Manager Super User in 3.1. If I set /tmp/mcop-dbtrol to owned by root this works fine but on booting I get an error from arts that there is a sound server fatal error because /tmp/mcop-dbtrol is not owned by user. If I change the directory to be owned by user then File Manager Super User comes up and immediately shuts down. How do I fix this or is this a known bug. TIA David

Hi. I had the same problem on my SuSE 8.1 Pro when i installed KDE 3.1. I think that has nothing to do with Yast2 but mainly with KDE. Try to download all the KDE's 3.1 RPMs from one ftp site e.g from ftp.kde.org/...../..... Sometimes,this problem appears a few times on my SuSE with KDE 3.1. I think kdesud is responsible for this... Just to verify this, run from the Konsole : 'kdesu konqueror'. If the kdesu dialog appears try not to check 'Remember password'. If it does not appear try 'ps -xa' from your Konsole. Try to find the line '/opt/kde3/bin/kdesud'. If you find it , kill that process with 'kill -9 PID' where PID is the process ID. When u kill the kdesu daemon, try again. KDE3.1 & YaST2

Hi Just installed KDE 3.1 on SuSE 8.0 and everything appears fine but YaST2 will no longer run. It starts, but after I enter the root password nothing happens other than the dialog box closing! I have re-installed YaST2 from the original CDs and applied all updates but no change. Any ideas? Thanks in advance Phil

Hi Mike! Normally you should aks such a question to the list too. Perhaps there are other eople who want to know, perhaps I tell you s.th. wrong and anybody knows better. You have to update at very least the base packages (kdebase3, kdelibs3, qt3.1) and i suggest you update all the packages, where you have installed an older version by now. It is now the 11th but the content of the page is the same Jan 29th, 2003 and Oct 10, 2002 packages that were there last week. Does anyone know if or when the SuSE KDE 3.1 material will be avail? japanese symbols on everybuddy

Hi! I have a strange problem: One of my contacts (via AIM) comes up with japanese looking symbols on everybuddy (0.4.3 on suse 8.0 box system). When I pull up the log I can read what she is saying, but that's kinda pain in the rear... All my other contacts (AOL and yahoo) come over fine... Any idea where I should look??? Thanks HG

After upgrading to 3.1 on a 8.0 Pro system I was getting a error on boot saying /tmp/mcop-dbtrol was not owned by me. All else seemed to be working including File Manager Super User Mode. After changing owner to dbtrol the File Manager SUM now comes up and immediately disappears. If I change ownership back to root it works fine. Question is should there be a /tmp/mcop-root directory, Also should there be a root/.mcop which I remember before upgrading. TIA David

Hallo, Wahrscheinlich wurde das schon oft gefragt und diskutiert, aber ich bin erst seit ein paar Tagen auf der Liste, deshalb entschuldigt meine Frage bitte. Welches ist der einfachste Weg um KDE 3.1 auf Suse 8.1 zu installieren? Kann mir vielleicht jemand ein paar Zeilen dazu weiterleiten oder schreiben? Ich würde mich sehr über jede Hilfe freuen! I just reinstalled SuSE 8.1 on a machine thinking I could go to the LinuKs page and download the Liquid RPM and have the liquid "theme" running, only to discover that the old version 0.9.5 for KDE 3.0.x is no longer there, replaced by 0.9.6 which is only for KDE 3.1. I know this is kind of trivial, but is the old RPM still available anywhere? Hi there, I've downloaded KDE 3.1 final RPMs for SuSE 8.1 from the kde web site, and after exerincing the same trouble (that sill remains) those from the suse.com ftp site (supplementary-dir). I then had the situation that my user still showed kde 3.0-design, but root was obviously seeing keramik already. I then used the control center and the desktop-settings-wizard (einrichtungsassistent) respectively to mirate my user to keramik. These "troubles" have three facets: 1) -I don't see all the icons, i.e. i see a blank space where log off and lock should be 2) -Almost every start of a program (e.g. konqueror) tells me "kdecore (KLocale): WARNING: found no definition of PluralForm for de" 2) -Far more important: applications keep crashing. This does for example affect (kde 3.1's) konqueror as soon as i start to download a file, or kate as soon as i click on the "open" button. Kopete does not start any more, although i updated it to 0.51 when it started sigserving at start. Can anybody help me and/or does anybody know about those problems? I just noticed on LinuKS: SuSE Linux KDE Service the following has been posted. KDE 3.1 packages are available for SuSE Linux 7.3 - 8.0. Konquer 3.1 quirks?

Hi all, I am curious if anyone else has noticed this anomally with Konq 3.1 yet. Although much improved, there are times when I want to try the KMozilla feature from the View part of the menu. As there was a new version supplied with all the files, I guessed that would allow that part to still work, but alas, it does not. If I select to view a page as Mozilla in Konq, all I get is a blank page! I see the page being loaded, but it fails to display anything. Now this could be due partially to the fact, I am running the Mozilla version from Mozilla.org instead of the SuSE install. That comes to me as the most obvious thing, but I thought I would throw it out to everyone to see if anyone has experienced the same thing? Wait, as a matter of fact, I do have the SuSE version installed as well, since Mozilla installs to /usr/local rather than the usual SuSE locations. But this brings up another thought, I have the SuSE 8.0 versions installed due to the java plugin problem, so maybe that is affecting it? Your thoughts & experiences please. Vncserver mit KDE während des Bootvorgangs starten (Suse 8.1)

Hallo, Ich möchte einen vncserver während des Bootvorgangs (in Runlevel 5) starten der eine KDE Oberfläche anbietet (Suse 8.1). Wenn ich mich allerdings mit dem vncserver verbinde, sehe ich nur einen Bildschirm mit rotem Hintergrund (der Suse-KDE-Root-Hintergrund?) und einem Mauspfeil. Es gibt keinen Login und keine Bedienelemente. Ich habe ein Script "vncserver" in /etc/init.d/ erstellt und verlinkt (insserv). Das Script wird als /etc/init.d/rc5.d/S13vncserver ausgeführt beim Booten. Das Script startet im Prinzip nur den vncserver mit Parameter :1 und zeigt das auch ordentlich auf demBildschirm während des Bootens an, außerdem beendet das Script den vncserver wenn der Rechner heruntergefahren wird. In der Datei /root/.vnc/xstartup steht nur die Zeile "exec /opt/kde3/bin/startkde &". Wie kann ich einen vncserver mit KDE während des Bootens starten? Ich würde mich über jede Hilfe freuen! Hallo, Ich möchte einen vncserver während des Bootvorgangs (runlevel5) starten der eine KDE Oberfläche anbietet. Hierfür habe ich ein Script "vncserver" in /etc/init.d/ erstellt und verlinkt. Das Script wird als /etc/init.d/rc5.d/S13vncserver ausgeführt beim Booten. Das Script startet im Prinzip nur den vncserver mit Parameter :1 und zeigt das auch ordentlich auf demBildschirm während des Bootens an, außerdem beendet das Script den vncserver wenn der Rechner heruntergefahren wird. Allerdings wird nur ein Bildschirm mit rotem Hintergrund (der Suse-KDE-Root-Hintergrund?) und einem Mauspfeil angezeigt. Es gibt keinen Login und keine Bedienelemente. Kann es sein, dass in dem Moment in dem das Script den vncserver startet noch nicht die nötigen Vorraussetzungen für einen kompletten Start von KDE getroffen sind? Hello there, I recently got a copu of suse 8.1 and i downloaded kdevelop as it is not on the cd`s. However if i try to install it using yast it complains about some doc`s en libs missing. Is there an rpm out there that has all of these? I can`t seem to find all individual packages. greets Cat

After 3.1 upgrade problems

After upgrading to 3.1 I get the following errors: On xconsole I get kdm_config[974]: unrecoqnized section mane [Desktop 0] at /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc:1 When starting KsCd I get error-KsCD Unable to create directory /opt/kde3/share/apps/kscd/cddb Check Permissions If I click ok on this and then click start on KsCD window tunes play fine. On booting after logging in to kde I receive a box with Sound Server Fatal Error: /tmp/mcop-dbtrol is not owned by user. Any ideas on these. TIA David

external screensaver instead of kde - own; does not work

Hello! (I just posted this question in German. I am sorry, I forgot it is an English list) After installation of SuSE 8.1 I am using also KDE as GUI. Now, I would like to use the external screensaver "xscreensaver" instead of the KDE-own one. Because xscreensaver changes the "pictures" itself during the current pop -up of screensaver. In opposite to KDE -as far as I know- which chooses one "picture" for the current moment and changes it after next time popping-up only. Please correct my if I am wrong (what to do to adjust?). Nevertheless I deactivated the screensaver via KDE Control Center and added "xscreensaver" in .xinitrc. But it does not work. The program starts, but does not popping up after adjusted time elapsed (parameters are to find in ~/.xscreensaver). Is there something more to adjust to achieve success? Hallo! Nachdem ich SuSE 8.1 inst. habe, verwende ich auch KDE als GUI. Nun möchte ich den externen screensaver "xscreensaver" anstelle des KDE-eingenen einsetzen, weil dieser von sich aus und automatisch die "Pausenbildchen" wechselt, während er sich eingeschaltet hat. (Im Gegensatz -so weit ich es gesehen habe- zu KDE, der immer nur das Bild wechselt, wenn sich der BS-Schoner erneut einschaltet). -> Bitte korrigiert mich, falls es auch anders geht (wie?). Jedenfalls habe ich via Control Center den KDE BS-Schoner deaktiviert und den "xscreensaver" in .xinitrc eingetragen. Leider ohne Erfolg: Das Programm startet zwar, tritt aber nicht in den Vordergrund, nachdem die Wartezeit abgelauten ist. Muß da noch irgend etwas / irgendwo anderes eingetragen werden, damit meine Bemühungen von Erfolg gekrönt sind? Danke für Eure Hilfe im voraus!!! -- Gruesze _ # Michael # _

no background picture behind login manager (3.1)

Since I upgraded to kde-3.1 I don't seem to be able to alter the background image of the login manager. This is at all systems I've upgraded (more than 1 ;) Does others have a similar experience, is there a solution? The config file (/etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc) has the following entry: [X-*-Greeter] AntiAliasing=true BackgroundCfg=/etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc Which is actually the file that I was browsing ... ??? -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

[maybe OT] I'm working with some people on translating kde into Frisian the 2nd language of The Netherlands. There are some files available, which are: # rpm -ql kde3-i18n-nl_FY /opt/kde3/share/locale/nl_FY/LC_MESSAGES/cupsdconf.mo /opt/kde3/share/locale/nl_FY/LC_MESSAGES/desktop_kde-i18n.mo /opt/kde3/share/locale/nl_FY/LC_MESSAGES/desktop_kdelibs.mo /opt/kde3/share/locale/nl_FY/LC_MESSAGES/kdelibs.mo /opt/kde3/share/locale/nl_FY/LC_MESSAGES/ktexteditor_isearch.mo /opt/kde3/share/locale/nl_FY/LC_MESSAGES/timezones.mo /opt/kde3/share/locale/nl_FY/entry.dektop If these files are installed by means of the rpm, no changes are visible when the language is set to nl_FY. However, if all (nl) /opt/kde3/share/locale/nl/LC_MESSAGES/*.mo files are copied to the nl_FY counter part and after that the above rpm is installed the Frisian words appear. That's likely what I'll be doing tonight, then. :-) By the way, anybody, is the ftp.kde.org site faster than the ftp.gwdg.de site? My original major update (that I said took 18 hours) was done via my ADSL connection, but apt-get reported speeds between 200B/s and 28.6kB/s, mostly with the gwdg site. While we are on the topic, can somebody please let me know what I *should* have done to have the KDE3.1 install and work directly off the repository(ies)?? What is so special about KDE3.1 that it is more resistant to installing than any of 1000 other packages that successfully went in? In order to get a working KDE3.1 onto my system, I would have been HAPPY to sacrifice existing programs from my system, if they somehow conflicted. I would equally have been HAPPY to forget about any pending non-KDE3.1 updates/upgrades if THEY were somehow in conflict. I made choices with apt-get, and then with synaptic, to resolve any reported conflicts or dependency problems, before I gave the big go-ahead. Why would it still crap out? My rpm database was in whatever state YaST/YOU had left it. I have never installed ANY apps from source. I have never issued a --force or --nodeps (to my knowledge). Is there a command option for apt-get that says "I don't care what you have to do to get KDE3.1 in and working, just do it"?? I don't mean --nodeps, or anything that will leave me with a bunch of time-bombs. I mean, if a package/program/ library already on my system is in conflict, then that package/program/library gets ripped out, automatically, and KDE3.1 goes in. Is there a way to do that without going package-by-package, by hand? I figure that once I had KDE3.1 working and stable, I could worry about re-installing other apps that were sacrificed... or finding replacements could peacefully co-exist. /kevin

KMail mailboxes to Outlook?

All, I've seen discussion of moving your e-mail from MS Outlook over to Linux and KMail. What about going the other way? I have several thousands of messages in KMail that I'd like to have available *as e-mail messages* in Outlook. A change at the company has required that I get rid of my Linux partition and go back to Windows and Outlook. I can use Linux on another computer, but my e-mail is to be handled via Exchange Server and Outlook.... darn-it! I know that I can just move everything over as plain text, but it would be much more useful to integrate all the messages that I've kept in KMail for the past 14 months back into Outlook -- which I was previously using. Hints? Suggestions? /kevin

Install 'NETSCAPE 4.79' in Winzoz. Then copy mbox files into the user directory, usually 'x:\Program files\Netscape\Users\identity\Mail. They will be automatically translated/indexed for Netscape (the format is the same, indexes are different! so copy only mbox file!!!) Then from Outlook Express You can import Netscape 4.79 mail files (don't try with Netscape6,7/Mozilla, it won't work!) Ciao, Luca

Hi out there, I have problems with the kdemultimedia-package (3.1) within suse 7.3. There seems to be no way to enable the midi-players to play with my Soundblaster AWE32 and alsa-0.5.12-0 :-(( The binary-rpms don't work. I can't even select any midi-device. And run from the commandline I get the error-message "Sorry, this KMid version was compiled without ALSA support but you're using ALSA .". So I compiled it on my own, (--with-alsa and --enable-sound=alsa) but I got the same result! Can anybody give me a hint, where I can find a binary kmid running with a sb awe, or even what do I need to compile by my self. Or even how to do the configure?! Kcommander 3.0

I'm running SuSE 8.1. I downloaded and installed the kcommander3-3-0-281 RPM. YAST installed the package without warnings or problems. However, I'm not sure that I have the program. There wasn't a name installed for Kcommander with the other applications or file managers. No icons. No sign of Kcommander anywhere. How do I know if Kcommander really is installed? Do I need to run any special commands to launch or activate it? Please advise. Thanks. Vince
