No screensavers anymore after update to KDE 3.4.2

HI! After updating my Suse 9.2 from KDE 3.4.1 to 3.4.2, one of the users (only this one) has an empty list of screensavers. It still works OK for other users! I tried to rename .kde with no positive effect. Out of the blue, I restored a Suse 9.0 user directory from that user and started with that and the screensavers where there again! Then, with the 9.2 user directory, they were there, too. After working for a few days, the list of screensavers is empty again for that user. What can that be? Thanks! Thomas

More important: Did you finalised the disc when it was originally burned? Most Linux distros don't read open discs that are not finalised yet. Try it on a known working computer. no kde-supplementary for amd64?

Keyboard problem

Hi there! I have a NEC Versa P520 Laptop with a keyboard on it, which has between the left shift and the z a button \ and with shifted | (I believe it is key 86). However, if I configure it to US-keyboard, all keys are right, but not that one. It becomes < >, which I already have. How can I solve this (for all applications, including the console)? Btw, is there a way to redefine the Windows key, so that it launches the KDE menu? I have tried doing it by SuSE>Control Center>Regional and then adding Win keys and redefining it to some ISO_Level3_Shift, but then it is launched everytime I use the Alt button left to the space, not the Win key. A blank disk can not be mounted. Check that your device is corrected found and placed either as an IDE (/dev/hda,hdb.hdc) or under SCSI (/dev/sr0,sr1) emulation. Qt/KDE Integration Bug

There is a bug in the Qt/KDE integration patches to Qt in SuSE 9.3 which is causing third-party applications such as Quasar, Scribus, and LinCVS to fail to work properly. Its easy to duplicate and show and is a problem in the patch to redirect Qt QMessageBox static methods to KDE message boxes. The basic problem is that there are two ways to call the QMessageBox functions. One way you pass in the text for the buttons on the message box and it should return which button was pressed (0, 1, or 2). The other way to call something like QMessageBox::warning though is to pass in a list of button ids such as QMessageBox::Yes/No/Cancel/... and in this case what should be returned is the button id that was clicked. The replacement code added in SuSE 9.3 that passes these functions off to KDE treats these both the same and will return the button number (0/1/2) in each case. So any code that uses Qt and calls QMessageBox::warning with button ids of QMessageBox::Yes and QMessageBox::No and then checks the result to make sure it matches QMessageBox::Yes will now fail and the user is left with an application that won't do the work regardless of whether they choose Yes or No! I reported this to SuSE support and then to the Technical Feedback and have not yet seen a fix or any acknowledgment of the problem so I thought I would have one last kick at trying to get through to someone at SuSE to get this fixed. The only other alternative for applications effected is to static compile the application with our own copy of Qt which doesn't have the KDE integration patches but this is a pain and means the application doesn't have the native look and feel and SuSE should fix this problem! Here is a simple program to demonstrate the problem: #include <qapplication.h> #include <qmessagebox.h> int main(int argc, char** argv) { QApplication app(argc, argv); int ch = QMessageBox::warning(NULL, "Test", "This is a test dialog", QMessageBox::Yes, QMessageBox::No); qDebug("choice = %d", ch); return 0; } Compile it and run it and try each button and you will see that its returning 0 and 1 for the buttons which are *not* the button ids like it should be. To show how it should work, disable the Qt/KDE integration using "export QT_NO_KDE_INTEGRATION=1" and run the program again and you will see the function returns back 3 and 4 which is QMessageBox::Yes and QMessageBox::No. -- Brad Pepers brad(a)linuxcanada.com

KDE Bug

Hi people at the desks! I haven't updated any kernel updates since a while, as I have had the problem, that my mouse froze at the start of KDE. I had to go to YaST, hardware and then mouse. Without altering anything, the mouse then worked again. I don't know whether anyone of you know, if this problem has been solved already. And if so, what kernel update should I get, not having to re-install the whole system again, which isn't my favourite way of spending my time. SuSE 9.2 Pro and Touchpad Issues

Hello all, Just received my copy of SuSE 9.2 Pro and completed a clean install on my Toshiba Satellite 2435 laptop. For whatever reason, the laptop's touchpad was not detected/installed correctly. Using the laptop has become extremely difficult. The mouse opens *almost* every window and app that it trails over and hardware clicking/tapping doesn't work. I don't recall what driver I've used in the past with SuSE and this laptop--truth is, I never looked. Currently I'm using the generic PS/2 Mouse (Aux-Port) driver as indicated in the Hardware section of YaST's Control Center and the touchpad is somewhat functional, albeit with irritating side effects. With previous versions of SuSE the touchpad was detected/configured correctly and without my intervention. Anyone using SuSE 9.2 with a similar machine? Searches on SuSE's Support Portal turned up zero articles related to ALPS Touchpad devices. Hi, as others might have mentioned before, there are broken dependencies with the latest kde 3.4.2 packages from supplementary, and others also have mentioned that the easiest way to fix that is a dummy package that "provides" those two missing deps. I have created such a dummy package, put it into my own installation source, and behold, yast2 gladly installs those kde.*-devel packages it refused to earlier. Dependencies again...

Hi all! I did my regular check for updates and found a new KDE version available. I'm using fou4s (SuSE 9.1) to update but this is what I get: error: Failed dependencies: kdelibs3-arts is needed by kdelibs3-devel-3.4.2-25 mDNSResponder is needed by kdelibs3-devel-3.4.2-25 I don't find those packages anywhere. At least the kdelibs3-arts I expected to be somewhere in the supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1 hierarchy... While in principle I think the KDE updates work nicely (quickly available, for all supported SuSE versions, a lot easier than at SuSE 7.2 times) there's almost always a problem with dependencies. Maybe someone remembers, but I already complained here in this list when the QT updates suddenly depended on xorg and not on XFree that shipped with SuSE 9.1. My solution was to compile the QT-SRC-RPM and fix this dependency myself. That option no longer was available when also KDE packages started to depend on xorg. Compiling this, too, would have taken too long. So I ended up upgrading to xorg. That alone wasn't too bad, but it took me three afternoons to get a fully working combination of X, KDE, ATI 3D drivers, Kernel and an RPM database without conflicts/dependency problems. To me this is just too much effort for a simple (semi?) official update. I don't know if similar problems happen in the not-so-old SuSE versions, but for the sake of the average customer I suggest to get rid of such unnecessary difficulties. My 2 cents... Kontact / addressbook plugins

Hi, since a couple of days I am trying to manage distribution lists with Kontact/KAddressBook (SL 9.3+KDE 3.4.2.+KMail 1.8.2+KAddressBook 3.4.2). I have imported my evolution-contacts into Kontact and there were several, not very often used distribution list among these contacts. But, as I attempted to send a mail to one of these lists, I noticed the list was not a list anymore, but a contact with several e-mail addresses. After doing some research on this I found out (in the KAddressBook help file) a "distribution list manager" plug-in should offer the possibility to manage distribution lists. There should also be a "Extensions" list on the "General" tab under Options->KDE-AddressBook, with which one should be able to enable/disable these plugins. But: there is none, just a filed called "Environment map" (which apparently has absolutely nothing to do with plugins)!!! Does anybody know a solution for this problem? The packaged mentioned on some pages googled by myself - kaddressbook-addons and kdepim-common - are not available for SL 9.3. I really need to find a solution. KDE can't access to floppy disk

Hi, running SuSE 9.3 I can access to floppy disk (/media/floppy) from a terminal but not from GUI (KDE 3.4.0 level "b"). As I click on the floppy disk icon there is a message box that say: "The process for the protocol media is unespectly dead" or something like this (I've an italian installation) and the system isn't able to mount the floppy. If I access the /media/floppy with the konqueror browser all work fine, too. What should I do? Many thanks in advance for your answers Stefano

KDE and shutdown script

Hi I am running SUSE 9.3 on a notebook. I want to run a user script when KDE goes down - where do I have to place such scripts? I heard that you can put any shutdown scripts into the directory ~/.kde/shutdown but nothing happens. I realized that the environment variable KDEDIRS is not set. Does anybody know how I can run a script if KDE goes down? -- Thanks for any help. Sami

Hallo, I'm a user of SUSe since long time . My first version was 7.0 and I just have upgrade my Suse 8.1 to 9.2 but I have a problem with inetd In 8.1 version the inetd was a packege called INETD and the config file was /etc/inetd.conf but when I have installed the 9.2, I don't find more the inetd package and when I'm trying to launch the rcinetd start , I have a FAILED back So what can I do ? I have since that it exists a Yast2-inetd but I don't know if it's the new name or .. ? Is the configuration name always inetd.conf or inetd.cfg ???? Can you help me because I need to access my computer via telnet and It doesn't run because my inetd don't run Best reagrds Paul, on6dp

New mail notification app

Anyone know a good app to sit in the systray to notify of new e-mail for various IMAP accounts? Maybe already packaged my SuSE 9.3 KDE distro? It is a shame Evo has lost that feature since 2.?, but it would be better to have selective notifications anyway. Thanks. -- Robert

I've tried to set bold and it is way to BOLD :( And the default font is not smooth, I tried checking off anti-aliasing. Konqueror as Browser

Hi all. I'm using SUSE 9.3 on an AMD 64 machine. In trying to use Konqueror 3.4.0 as my web browser I often get unknown host errors when trying to access web sites This happens even with sites like Google, example below. An error occurred while loading http://www.google.com/search?q=google&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8: Unknown host www.google.com Often I will try the same URL three or four times before it finally connects. This doesn't happen all the time but much too often to be acceptable. Other times I will get a file not found error. Still other times it will work fine. Can anybody offer any insight?! I was messing with Themes and Styles, but lost the original fonts in KDE and would like them back. But I cannot find a Theme or Font setting that looks the same as it was by default and the Defaults button does not produce the old font either. How can I get the default settings back? -- Robert

Problem with KNemo and KMail

I downloaded the sources of KNemo from http://packman.links2linux.com/?action=439 and successfully ./configure make and make install -ed them. But how do I load KNemo? The KDE Apps page at http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=12956 says: KNemo is not an executable but an KDED service. Therefore it has to be started using Control Center/KDE Components/Service Manager. But the service manager doesn't show KNemo. What do I do? Please advise. Thanks. Regarding KMail, the problem is: I have added suse-linux-e(a)suse.com to my address book and given it the nickname SLE. When I used to use Mozilla I used to be able to just enter the nickname and Mozilla would automatically expand it to the full. Doesn't this work so with KMail? Folder-sensitive identity selection in KMail?

Back in Mozilla, I used to have separate inbox/outbox/drafts/etc folders for each account. So whenever I used to reply to a particular account's inbox, that account's identity would be used. Now in KMail, is it possible to tell KMail to use a particular identity when my focus is on a particular folder? I have a folder for my newsletter POP account (both inbox and sent items in that single folder) and similarly for my Linux comms (s-l-e, s-kde, s-ot etc) I have a folder called linux with inbox and sent items. Whenever I reply to something that comes on my newsletter account, I would like KMail to use the identity that I have configured with that POP account's address, and whenever I reply to something that comes on my Linux account, I would like it to use this address/identity, and elsewhere, my IMAP identity for pure personal communication. KMail pageup and pagedown

In Mozilla I used to be able to use page up, page down, home and end to navigate among the messages list, but I am unable to do this with KMail. Since a month I try to have a running system with this, but after more try I find that the kernel 2.6 don't support soundmodem (SuSE 9.3/9.2/9.1), so I switched on a SuSE 9.0 (kernel 2.4). SIS 660 graphic card on SuSE 9.0

I need a kernel 2.4.X, so I installed SuSE 9.0 on a new PC but the graphic card is a SIS 660 that isn't listed (newer as SuSE 9.0), so I can't start SaX2 nor KDE as graphical desktop. :-(( Anyone has a suggestion? Thank you all Stefano

Problem with keyboiard for one user suse9.3, kde 3.4.2

Hello, probably since I did the last upgrade to kde3.4.2 on a suse9.3 system one particular user has a problem running KDE. Only this user has this problem other users can work without problems. The problem is that after the user has started up KDE (from kdm) he cannot *type* anything no matter if he tries a terminal window or tries to type in a URL in konqueror or anything else. The keyboard seems not to be there. Even numlock or CTR-ALT-F{x} or CTRL-ALT-BACLSPACE does not do anything. So the only way to leave this login is to terminate it via the KDE-Menue which works fine. In short words: You can do anything you want by *clicking* but you cannot do anything by *typing*. When I move the users .kde dir to .kde.old and start a new login so that a fresh .kde dir is created everything works again. The trouble is that going this ways the users looses quite everything, from konqueror bookmarks, severel mail accounts in kmail, passwords in kwallet and probably many things more I don't see now. So does anyone see a way to get kde working again without loosing the complete KDE setup of this user. Which of those hundreds of config files in .kde might be responsible for the keyboard lockup?
