Hi all. I'm using SUSE 9.3 on an AMD 64 machine. In trying to use Konqueror 3.4.0 as my web browser I often get unknown host errors when trying to access web sites This happens even with sites like Google, example below. An error occurred while loading http://www.google.com/search?q=google&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8: Unknown host www.google.com Often I will try the same URL three or four times before it finally connects. This doesn't happen all the time but much too often to be acceptable. Other times I will get a file not found error. Still other times it will work fine. Can anybody offer any insight?! TIA. -- LTR bulloved@nitline.com

Thanks for your speedy response. Can I do the needed update with YAST, if so what should I select for my update? I don't see anything there which looks like an updated version of KDE or Konqueror. Or must I go to the KDE web site and work from there? I apologize if these questions have the ring of newbie, or if the answers can be readily found somewhere, but I've only just started using SUSE. Again thanks. -- LTR bulloved@nitline.com

I don't have a howto or such thing handy. I use apt myself, but it can be done with yast as well. Search the susewiki for info (http://susewiki.org). Look for yast e.g. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

I downloaded the entire 527 MB from one of the mirrors at: http://download.kde.org/download.php?url=stable/3.4.2/SuSE/ix86/9.3/ then pointed YaST to it ("change source of installation" > add > local directory > your-download-directory) and when I start up install/remove software, i see all the newly available 3.42 stuff in blue, so I change all of their tick marks to the upgrade symbol (a green-grey lightning bolt, sort of) and then click okay (or whatever) and all is done. You may also be able to simply point your YaST to the FTP server, but I had timeout problems with direct online updates so downloaded everything. -- (o- Penguin #395953 lives at http://samvit.org //\ subsisting on ancient Indian wisdom ... Did you do that manually or did you right click on one of the entries and then selected "All in This List > Update if newer version is available"? Eddie

Aw sheesh I didn't know that such an easy method was there. Stupid me... Thanks for the wake-up call. :) -- Shriramana Sharma Sym454 2005-09-02 http://samvit.org Penguin #395953 /

Explore the menus of the critical applications you use! Many non-trivial applications have documentation and / or Tips available via the Help menu, too. Is there an echo in here? Randall Schulz

You don't need to update if you don't like to (AFAIK). I think your problem should be solved when you disable IPV6 support. I don't know how exactly it works on SuSE, but AFAIK there's an article in the SuSE Linux FAQ. Hi Langsley, probably it help when you Update your KDE to a higher Version, but for a quick Solution i would recommend you to switch of the nscd Daemon. For this, start Yast and go into the Runnlevel Editor. Find the nscd, turn it off with the left PullDown Menu to the botton, and then disable them with the right, bottom Pulldown Menu. As far i remember, this should solve your Problem for now, at least it did for me. Greatings Michael
