I'm new to SuSE and KDE both, having just migrated from Red Hat/Gnome. I'm also new to CUPS, having alwasy used LPRng. I'm wondering what is the purpose of the Print Magager in the KDE menu? In order to configure the print server, it asks for a user and password, but no valid user/password you give it works! I went into the print manager under CUPS Server configuration and entered the password for root and checked the box that said "store password in configuration file" but it still doesn't work. It tells me "Unable to retrieve configuration file from the CUPS server. You probably don't have the access permissions to perform this operation" WTF? If root doesn't have permission, who the hell does? If I try to restart the server, it then asks me for the root password. When I enter it here, it works fine, and restarts the server. But the minute I try to configure the server, it tells me authentications failed, I don't have permission. So I guess I'm wondering, what is the point of this utility if no one can use it, and is there a better utility I don't know about to configure the print server, or do I have to study up on CUPS and start writing configuration files manually? Menu problem.....once again.

Everything has been fine with editing menus in 9.1 Pro. Now, all of a sudden, if I edit, for example, "Multimedia," ALL apps. listed are gone, except for what I just entered. Is there a fix? KAudioCreator creating corrupted .wav files?

I'm using KAudioCreator (v1.0 on KDE 3.2.3) to rip a bunch of cds and encode them as ogg vorbis files. I'm running SUSE9.1 with KDE 3.2.3. Frequently, while ripping a disc it will rip several tracks and encode them fine, then it will start producing ogg files that are 24kb, instead of 2.3mb (or whatever). At this point, I can just rip any track to a wav file and use oggenc in a terminal window to encode it, but get the same result. I can try to rip it with GRIP and it takes forever for it to rip the track. If I use cdparanoia to rip the disc and oggenc to encode it, all from a terminal, it seems to work fine. The only solution is to reboot, maybe twice or more. It will be fine for a random number of discs.

Lost icons

We use LDAP for authentication and lost that server yesterday temporarily while I had a session active. Had to go to a command prompt and reboot as root. After the LDAP server came back online, I had a problem logging in due to KDE not being able to find my .DCOP_<hostname>__0 file. After reading on the web, I removed all in my /tmp directory to get back in. But now some of my icons are missing on Panels and Menu. Looks to be all the programs that were installed after the initial installation. The programs are still there of course, I can run them from the Run command. Is there a way to get those icons back on my menu and/or panels without manually having to do it? -- Robert

Umlaute nach Update auf KDE 3.2.3 weg :-(

Hallo, vielleicht kann mir einer von euch sagen, wieso alle Umlaute in sämtlichen Anwendungen (Firefox, Sylpheed-claws, Konqueror etc.) nach einem Update auf KDE 3.2.3 (von 3.2.1) plötzlich nur noch als kryptische Zeichen dargestellt werden? Ich hab schon versucht im Kontrollzentrum von KDE eine Kodierung manuell festzulegen, aber auch das hilft nichts :-( Wo kann man das vielleicht noch festlegen? Danke für die Hilfe! Gruß Stefan

K3bSetup

I can't get k3b to work. I've upgraded my KDE installation from the SUSE homepage, but when K3B come up it tells me that cdrecord and cdrdao are not being run with root privileges. I can't find anything in the settings to change this....I assume the settings dialog is K3bSetup, since I can't seem to find it anywhere else. How do I make K3B on 3.2.2 work? It worked on the stock installation of KDE. Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks andy

start new session

what command should I use to start a new session as a different user? I used to have a "start new session" option in my kmenu but somewhere along the line this went away. I want to be able to cntrl+f8 to new session and cntrl+f7 back to "my" session.

[suse-kde] Custom konqueror shortcut

I want to enqueue a song in xmms when the cursor is over a certain mp3 file by pressing F12 for example. Anybody know if there is a way to assign this custom shortcut in konqueror? Thanks. C. C.

Effects of -95 Kernel on KDE Konqueror 3.2x

Hello. I am no longer able to X over to Konqueror on either of the 2 SuSE 9.1 boxes on our LAN from my Mac Powerbook G4 (OS X 10.3.4). Prior to the -95 Kernel Upgrade everything worked fine. The error message is: Xlib: extension "XInputExtension" missing on display "localhost:10.0". Failed to get list of devices I have been told that the XInput extension is not supported in Apple's X11 (or XFree86 4.4.0 on Mac OS X for that matter). Any client that insists on having XInput available will not be able to run. There is basic XInput support available in the top of the XFree86 tree, which should allow clients like this to run. Anyone know why the KDE client suddenly started insisting on XInput? Should I be able to work around the lack of XInput support with an appropriate build or run time option? Thanks Mike
