Henk Yes I did, everything is normal and has the right settings. As I mentioned, all I need to do is reactivate apply in the sound control panel area and it works. No additional action is needed, no changing of sound levels. Really weird I think. Maybe someone knows which scripts are called when the apply button is pressed? Sabine

Question regarding sound

Hi Everyone, I think this happens after I a) upgraded to the new Kernel (SuSE 9.1, 2.5.x) or b) got the latest KDE release (3.2.3) When I start and log in, I can't hear any sound. I have to open the Control Panel, go to Sound and Multimedia - Sound System. To be able to click apply I have to make whatever change, undo it, click apply and bingo... sound is back. No other change is needed. When I check before I go through the procedure, artsd is running. First I thought it might not have been started. I tried this (http://portal.suse.com/sdb/de/2004/05/thallma_91_sndsilence.html or http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/05/thallma_91_sndsilence.html), but it didn't help. The only thing that makes the sound audible is the procedure described above. Does anyone have an idea where to look? It's somewhat annoying to manually start this everytime. On my laptop I don't have this problem (Dell Inspirion 1100). My desktop is a selfmade system (Athlon based), the soundchip uses Crystal Sound Fusion CS46xx. Thanks, -- Sabine

I found that the reason adding $MYAPP/share to KDEDIRS doesn't work as expected under SUSE is that KDEDIRS is unset in SUSE's modified version of the startkde script (/opt/kde3/bin/startkde), which, of course, is executed after a user's .profile is read. Changing KDEDIRS after KDE is already started has no effect. If I undo SUSE's change to the startkde script, everything works as documented for KDEDIRS. Why does SUSE modify KDE's startkde script in this way? Makes no sense to me. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks! TAK

Integrating applications with KDE Desktop

Using Suse 9 with KDE 3.2. Is there any way to integrate an application (menu shortcuts, file associations, etc) with a user's KDE destop which does NOT involve any copying or linking of desktop files and icons to /opt/kde3/share/... or $HOME/.kde/share/... or anywhere else. In other words, can a user simply expand the search path for desktop integration files to more than these directories? On Redhat 9 with KDE 3.1, for example, we use the KDEDIRS path variable to do this, so that the desktop files, icons etc only reside in our application installation directory $MYAPP/share/... and a user only needs to append $MYAPP/share to their KDEDIRS path variable, if they want to integrate our application with their KDE desktop. This makes desktop integration (or nonintegration), uninstallation, updating of our app more manageable both for us and users. The KDEDIRS approach doesn't seem to work with SUSE 9 and KDE 3.2. Is there another way? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks! TAK

drives:/ folder is no longer accessible

(this is a newby question) Hi to all linux-fans out there, somehow I managed to break a part of my kde configuration: since a couple of days I am no longer able to access the drives:/-URL which is linked with the "Arbeitsplatz"-Icon (I don't know how this Icon is named in english versions - desktop?). If I try to open my "Arbeitsplatz" a shell-Window pops up and disappears instantly. Thereafter a Konqueror-window opens with the error message "Beim Laden von drives:/ ist folgender Fehler aufgetreten: Die Übermittlung von Daten aus drives ist leider nicht möglich." (~ following error occured while accessing drives:/ : transmission of data from drives:/ was not possible) It has to do with my personal kde-configuration as the same drives:/-folder of a secondary account of mine (which I never reconfigured after installation) is working fine. So I don't believe that I messed up some global system settings. I tried to figure things out by comparing (diff) the .kde/share/config contents of both accounts, but nothing caught my eye. As I am (very!) new to linux I am not familiar with the KIO_things of life... and I wasn't able yet to make sense out of the information I got from google. As I did some lengthly customizing of my kde (ok... most of it had to do with colors, fonts and the like...) I dislike the thought of throwing it all away. SuSE 9.0 from KDE 3.1.4 to 3.2.3

For KDE migration I did all instruction in the http://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/kde/stable/3.2.3/SuSE/README but after all icons stay in the left upper corner of the screen. Only after "Align to grid" action icons stay by his self places. How can I do icons for an applications and devices has persistent places?

SuSE Theme Missing After 3.2.3 Update

I recently updated my SuSE 9.0 box to KDE 3.2.3 using the SuSE rpms. Now the SuSE theme is no longer available as an option from the Control Center. Is there a way I can recover and use this theme? TIA Dave

Staring FireFox from KMail

Hey everyone, I would like URLs appearing in my mail to open in FireFox instead of Konqueror. The control panels gives me a 'Component Chooser' but it doesn't include a web browser option. I remember there used to be an option to choose Gecko instead of KHTML but can't seem to find it back. Eric
