Frequent Mozilla crashes with SuSE 8.0

Firstly, I hope this is not the wrong list. If it is, could someone be so kind as to gently point me towards the correct one. To the actual problem, - SuSE 8.0 (German version, installed in English) - essentially no KDE 2., I only really have KDE 3.0 and X11 4.2 installed. - processor: Via 866 with a newish Via motherboard (256M DDR266 Ram) - the original Mozilla version that comes with this release (the updated one comes up with a totally blank screen as in unusable for me. This itself is an indication that something is horribly wrong) The old Mozilla that came with 7.3 was pretty stable. The new one dies very frequently under a range of circumstances, some reproducible (certain websites). The new Netscape 6.x often dies before it has even finished loading, the old one was less stable than Mozilla was but nothing like this. The most recent abort was: /usr/X11/bin/mozilla: Line 72: 3578 Segmentation fault $prog {$1+"$@"} Now, I program mainframes and not this stuff. What does this mean (apart from the obvious)? Is something missing that should be installed and how do I find out? Thanks for your patience.

Problems with updateing to KDE3 on SuSE7.3

Had been updating the KDE2 on my machine regualarly until I saw the KDE3 files moved from experimental to the real subdirs - so decided to wait a while before updating. yesterday I decided to take the plunge and disaster struck! First thing to go wrong was my kde, kde2, and kde3 (from the experimental stuff) links in /usr/X11R6/bin were gone. No problem - replace them - but my startkde script in /opt/kde2/bin is missing. So now I can't even start KDE2!!! So - any chance anyone has a working one for KDE2 lying around then can send on? Next problem - rebooted machine back to init level 5. What's happened to KDM?! Only XDM is running. A little bit of investigation later and /opt/kde2/bin/kdm is also deleted! To cap it off I needed to edit /etc/init.d/xdm to check for /opt/kde3/bin/kdm instead (which works beautifully I must add). Next problem is that on every cold reboot I'm asked whether I want to load my KDE2 settings or make new KDE3 ones! Anyone know how to fix this? To make it worse - selecting the KDE2 settings doesn't even work properly as my background is wrong, etc.. Next one is what happened to my desktop icons? Yes I can create them again, but it's a bit of a pain. And one of the more iritating problems - I liked when SuSE integrated YAST2 into the KDE Control Center and provided menus, etc.. Now they are no more. How can I get these back? And finally - it's very unstable. I use MPlayer quite a bit which means I need to killoff artsd, start Mplayer then restart artsd. But so for this results in the X session crashing as soon as I go back to KDE applications. Any ideas? Anyway, Apart from all that - KDE3 is faster and much better looking than it's predecessor. I'll be using it over and above KDE2 for my desktop, but until I can get the above problems sorted it's still going to be fluxbox on my laptop! RikD.

Suse 8 kde 3 Crash

Hi everybody, I've installed Suse 8 with KDE 3 for the second time now and still the same error occurs over and over again. The whole system just freezes (very randomly). Most of the times it does that in the first minute, after I've logged in with my default user account. But sometimes the computer has been on for 2 days, not doin very much, but running, and then, about 10 seconds after I've started XMMS, it freezes too. By freeze I mean, that the screen freezes, the keyboard and mouse become irresponsible and I cannot even log into my computer from another computer via ssh. So I guess that the whole system is down. It hasn't happened as root so far, but with every user account I've created. I haven't changed any settings yet, besides installing the (latest) NVIDIA drivers. But with the first installation the drivers that came with SUSE did not work as well. My system is a - Pentium III 800 with - two soundcards (one from Guillemot, that I deactivated in the configuration because of the lack of driver support and another cheap one that I use for Linux) MAYBE it is because of the soundcards???!?!?! - Then just the usual ethernet....... nothing special And it all worked fine with Suse 7.3 So has anyone experienced something similar and has an advise, how to fix the problem? Problem using digiKam with SuSE 8.0

Hello, 1. I've got a Canon PowerShot G2 digital camera with USB cable. The Problem is, after installation of SuSE 8.0 Professional I'm able to connect to the camera using gtkam, without any problems, but as soon as I use digiKam, the program crashes after configuration of the camera. Unfortunately I'm not able to provide the komplete errormessage at the moment, but maybe somebody knows the error. 2. Login as root and configure the camera in KDE works fine, the camera added to the desktop. As normal user, NO icon is added to the desktop, I had to do this manualy. 3. DCOP stopping KDE3 login

Hey all, Full install info below. But a basic description of the problem: KDE3 reverts back to the kdm login whenever trying to login to KDE3. KDE2, Gnome, various window managers all log in fine. I'm sure it's something to do with DCOP. I've read similar problems being had on various Usenet groups and such, but never found a solution that worked. The error messages I find in logs include: DCOP aborting call from 'anonymous-1965' to 'kded' Error: KUniqueApplication: DCOP communication error! And a similar error follows for knotify. Steps found on the web/usenet taken which haven't worked: 1- Delete everything in /tmp and any DCOP/ICE files (incl. hidden) found in the home directory. Didn't help. 2- Tried creating a new user. New user couldn't log in to KDE3 either. Anyone know anything about how DCOP works enough to get me out of this? The install process done, in order (all SuSE RPMs taken from SuSE ftp): 1- Install SuSE 7.3 with kde2. 2- YOU to update all installed programs. 3- Upgrade kernel to 2.4.16 (SuSE RPM) 4- Upgrade X to 4.2.0 (SuSE RPMs) 5- Install all base packages of KDE3 (SuSE RPMs), except the kde2 compatibility one. Not needed if KDE2 is installed, right? 6- Install some of the KDE3 apps (SuSE RPMs) Still uses kdm from KDE2. Add 'kde3' so I can log in to KDE3. So it works fine for a while. The only really major thing I did during the login session before it started this problem was font install. I used Kfontinst from the control center while logged in as a user (switched to superuser mode of course). Installed fonts from my Windoze partition to Linux, with no problems. So no logging in to KDE3 after that. I've tried doing the exact same procedure on another computer and I can't seem to duplicate the problem! Any suggestions on what caused this? Searching in bugs.kde.org turned up a few results, but none gave a solution that worked for me. (I really wish they'd post a quick rundown of what's been fixed in 3.0.1!!!) KMail Encrypting to Outlock - Bad Session Key

Checking Google there is some confusion, but the most credible answer (from Disastry) is this is: "probably because of MDC. GPG uses MDC with AES,Twofish. however 6.5.8ckt06 should be able to decrypt Blowfish encrypted msgs. "you can disable MDC with --openpgp switch. then 6.5.8ckt06 should be able to decrypt all ciphers. This is why I got away from Netscape. I was really hoping the addressbook was further along by now. Was planning to use it for business, but it can't do mail-merge. I must have that. Maybe I'll have to stay with my Winduhs app (Time&Chaos) for a while. Or figure out how to make my own in Postgres. Anyone know a good, easy reference for learning Postgres? Needs to be accessible: "Postgres for businessmen" or something. Also KAlarm isn't alarming. I set it, but it doesn't kick. When I reboot, THEN it kicks (too late). Like a daemon's not running. Audio Browser doesn't work

Recently I upgraded from 7.3 to 8.0. With 7.3 it was easy to rip my CD's to the Ogg Vorbis format using the I/O slave in Konqueror. Now when I click on the Audio CD Browser get the error message An error occurred while loading audiocd:/ The file or directory / does not exist. I think this is a permissions problem, but I have checked my permissions, and they seem fine (at least to me:)) Here is my setup CD-RW as seondary Master hdc I have hdc=ide-scsi in lilo.conf /dev/cdrom and /dev/cdrecorder are both linked to /dev/sr0 Owner is mikecoan (me) and group is users. Permission is rw------- so I have rw permission. cdrom is linked to /media/cdrom and cdrecorder is linked to /media/cdrecorder These are owned by root, with group=disk. I am a member of disk. The permisssion for /media/cdrom and /media/cdrecorder are rwxr-xr-x. Seems to me that in 7.3 I had the owner of sr0 as root with group=disk. Any guidance would be appreciated. Mike

arts over a network

Hi, I'm running three computers here, two of which are over the network using xdmcp. Does anyone know if it's possible to get the remote computer to output its sound using my local arts daemon? I can see an option "Enable network transparency" but I can't seem to get the sound output started. Has anyone tried this? Pointers? TIA Anders
