Suse 8 kde 3 Crash
Hi everybody, I've installed Suse 8 with KDE 3 for the second time now and still the same error occurs over and over again. The whole system just freezes (very randomly). Most of the times it does that in the first minute, after I've logged in with my default user account. But sometimes the computer has been on for 2 days, not doin very much, but running, and then, about 10 seconds after I've started XMMS, it freezes too. By freeze I mean, that the screen freezes, the keyboard and mouse become irresponsible and I cannot even log into my computer from another computer via ssh. So I guess that the whole system is down. It hasn't happened as root so far, but with every user account I've created. I haven't changed any settings yet, besides installing the (latest) NVIDIA drivers. But with the first installation the drivers that came with SUSE did not work as well. My system is a - Pentium III 800 with - two soundcards (one from Guillemot, that I deactivated in the configuration because of the lack of driver support and another cheap one that I use for Linux) MAYBE it is because of the soundcards???!?!?! - Then just the usual ethernet....... nothing special And it all worked fine with Suse 7.3 So has anyone experienced something similar and has an advise, how to fix the problem? I would really appreciate it! Regards, Sebastian

I would believe hardware problem because of this.

Can be soundcard.

I have also had freeses since I changed to NVidia. Maybe you have another graphics card to test with?

This is also possible. Can you rip them out, test, install one, test again, install second and more testing.
And it all worked fine with Suse 7.3
New kernel and drivers in 8.0 so maybe you should wait for a newer kernel from SuSE. /Stefan

I get this too. I don't run as root, so I don't know if that part is true for me, but everything else matches my experiences. I also run nvidia. So at this stage my suspicions lie with either the nvidia driver or the kernel or both. I don't *think* it's the nvidia driver, because I could run with it under 7.3 without these problems, but you never know. It could be some weird interaction between the driver and the new kernel in 8.0. I'm going to try running without it for a while to see if the problem remains without it. //Anders
