problems entering and exiting kde

I have SUSE 8.0 on Athlon 1600 xp, 256 MB ram, Matrox G550. I have two problems: 1) Sometimes it takes very long time (even 2 min.) for kde to start after startx command, both as root or normal user. 2) When I issue the command to exit kde to go back to the command line the screen turns black, the hard disk stop and everything seems to be dead (no response to ctrl-alt-bksp either). I have to reset. Any idea ? Thanks a lot. Riccardo, Italy.

Panel-Applets Icons don't appear

Hi, I installed somebody a linux machine with SuSE 8.1 with KDE 3.0.3 on it. Unfortunately, the Icon for oooqs and kinternet didn't appear in the panel but they have been running. When I tried to start kinternet manually I got the msg 'kinternet is yet running. It's the small plug icon in your panel.' But there has been no Icon in the panel. So the user has to use cinternet in the console, but this isn't as comfortable as kinternet. The oooqs icon didn't also appear in the panel, so I wonder if there is a little trick to get this working. I know that the disappearing of kinternet from the panel was discussed somewhere before but I do not refind nor in my mailer nor via google or the SuSE SDB. So thanks for your tips: Even links to the right information are very welcome. Kmail headers

After upgrading SuSE 8.1 to KDE 3.0.4, Kmail no longer shows SpamAssassin markup when viewing mail using long headers. Is there a way to select which headers one can view using long headers? Thanks in advance.

What I needed was a line in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XftConfig dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype" That was all (beside the prerequisites stated above). Windowmanager starts instead of KDE 3.1b2

I am running SuSE 8.1 I had a working version of kde 3.1 beta 2. I installed this by donwloading the binaries from download.kde.us.org. I did a rpm -Uvh --force kde* because it said there was a conflict between the new kdebase3 and keramik. Everything worked fine after the install. Later I added kde-unstable to my sources list in apt. I am using apt .54. Using synaptic, I did an apt-get update. This revealed some newer kde packages. When I tried to upgrade it said conflict with keramik (and some number like 202 etc). I did an rpm -e keramik (since I had updated the kdebaase3 I figured I didn't need keramik) and then did an upgrade from synaptic. Everything went fine. I ran SuSEconfig and ldconfig. Upon reboot i get the same graphical login screen. I clik on mikecoan, enter my password. kde is specified as the windowmanager. i click Go, or hit enter, and Windowmaker starts up. I used Yast to switch to runlevel 3. After loggin in as mikecoan, the command startx kde still starts Windowmaker. I tried WINDOWMANAGER=kde export $WINDOWMANAGER That didn't help, but I may not have the syntax right. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Print Konq

The past couple of days when I tried to print a file from File Manager the Print Konq box pops up but the name area and print command are greyed out. I can still use Print a file just fine. Another thing is when using print a file the text was printed in about 8pt which is what I like, but the print from file manager was in 12pt or more, which I do not like. Suggestions. David

Hi Folks! I've read all the mails and articles about this very annoing subject, to get KDE3 on SuSE 7.3 using antialiased fonts. So I got the xf86 4.2.0 packages for SuSE 7.3 and the QT3 Packages from SuSE 8.0 (to have QT3 with xft support) and used the actual freetype2 libs from mfabian's homedir to have the bytecode interpreter enabled. every qtrc (global and user) has the entries: enableXft=true useXft=true I checked the checkbox in kcontrol for antialiased fonts and made sure, it is enabled in qtconfig (think thats the option in qtrc, too, but I checked it). But all truetype fonts are still not antialiased. Does anyone know what I could be still missing now? Thanks, Daniel

Print Font Size

How do I change the font size that KDE prints in 8.0. The font size it is using is 12-14 I would like to change this to 8. It seems that all my print sizes have changed since I upgraded to 3.0.4. I also upgraded Mozilla at the same time so I do not know what has caused this mess up but Mozilla also prints in a large font. Thanks David

Partial Install SUSE

With the borrowed set of SUSE 8.0 disks I was able to acheive only a partial install of SUSE Pro. DIsks 2,3,4 were unrecognisable this on two different systems. On my system Suse 7,2 did fully install. Now on LILO I find I have a new feature called Suse Safe Settings. Is this some form of alternate Kernal based on lowest common denominator hardware? I dont want to test it on either machine until I get a proper install. 8.1 install dumb questions...

Greetings, I just did a full install of 8.1 over a 7.x installation. It's a test bed environment so scrubbing the old and piling on the new wasn't a issue. It appears to have completed normally. Now, the manual tells me what CD #2 is, and I know what CD #1 is...but what the heck is on the rest of these CD's? I can't find anything in the manual to tell me what's on them or how to install it! Unrequested changes of fontsizes

Hi, I just realised that I subscribed an english-spoken mailinglist, meaning that I have to explain my problem a 2nd time. I don't know why but sometimes KDE unrequested changes the sizes of my fonts. I usually use size 10, but sometimes and especially after some difficulties the size is just 8. And so I open the controllcenter - change size to 12 (it still shows 10) - close the controllcenter - shut down the PC - restart the PC - now the size is 12 - open the controllcenter - change size back to 10 - close it. I really don't know why it happens. In /.kderc nothing changed. Sounds the problem familiar to someone? Frank

Someone advised me to install the qt-devel-xxx package, as it's needed in order to achieve a compilable application. But the problem didn't disappear, no matter what version of qt (in rpm) I download from SuSE; so I downloaded the sources (.tar.gz) from Trolltech's site, followed the instructions to install, and now it works.... it's not the first time SuSE's packages fails (at last, in my case), so take it in care for future situations with other apps and environments... By the way, go to kde's site and to install info. You have to pass some special ./configure options in order to get a correct qt version for kde, and there you can find what are the correct ones. If I remember correctly, these are --no-g++-exception, --no-stl, and --thread, I guess.... Qt problems..

Hello Friends - System stuff: SuSE 8.1, KDE 3.0.3, Qt 3.05 (both KDE and Qt are the original versions from the SuSE install). Problem: Every time I try to compile a program that requires Qt libraries, I get the following error message: checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.0.3) (library qt-mt) not found. Please check your installation! For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log. Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support! Now, I've looked around quite a bit for a solution to this; it seems that Qt MUST be installed with thread support, as KDE wouldn't be running without it. My question: are the kde rpms for SuSE on KDE's site the same as those on SuSE's site? The local university mirrors KDE but not SuSE. artsd in a network

I've asked this before, but since I didn't receive any helpful suggestions (or indeed any at all) I'll try again. It's possible according to the artsd documentation to get it to work transparently over a network. In other words, if there's an arts daemon running on computer A, programs running on computer B connect to it to output sound. I believe I'm relatively good at getting things to work in linux, but no matter how many times I read the faq and follow its instructions, all sound from the programs on computer B are played on computer B, while computer A - in a different room - is completely silent. My question is simply: has anyone managed to get this to work? TIA Anders

Sending in KMail?

Ok, I know this has been mentioned a time or two, but I don't remember the fix, if there was one? When after composing an email in Kmail now since getting the more recent updates, it crashes when you tell it to send or queue it? It doesn't destroy the mail as I can reload Kmail and send later. What is that all about and can it be fixed? KDE 3.0.1 and gpg

I'm running SuSE 8.0, gnupg 1.0.6, Kmail 1.4 and KDE 3.0.0 on some of my desktops and wanted to upgrade to the Star Office 6.0 that is sold as a patch/update CD specifically for SuSE 8.0. After updating the Star Office and the patches which includes KDE 3.0.1 I am unable to encrypt email with gpg under kmail. I can decrypt incoming but have lost the ability to encrypt outgoing maill. The lock icon is hazed out etc. I had to start over on that particular machine...the encryption is mission critical for me. So I put it all back to 8.0 stock out of the box....installed only the Star Office 6.0 update from the CD and everything is fine. So, I'm guessing that it's something to do with the KDE update. Anybody know how to fix that? Real KDE Support

I'm a RedHat user getting tired of their 'support' for KDE. So I'm looking for another distro that has quality and truly supports KDE. Everyone's telling me to use Suse. So here I am. So what's the real deal? Does YaST offer support for the updates to KDE allowing me to easily update or do I have to manually update like in RedHat (rpm -Uvh --nodeps *.rpm)? Help with Error Message

I would appreciate some help understanding an error message I have received on trying to run a program. I have just installed a program called bookcase, which is a frontend for an xml based data file on book collections. The ./configure make (su) checkinstall went fine with no errors. The rpm is installed. kde 3.0.4 wont start automatically

Hy, im using suse 8.0. Ive upgradet to kde 3.0.4 using rpm -F * and after that SuSEconfig of course. But now KDE wont start automatically. After login (graphical login) X-Ser= ver=20 is running with a console window. Now Windowmanager. When i enter "kde" into the terminal, kde launches and everything works f= ine. Well I tried again with the LiteON IDE-CDRW 40x12x48. Like the guy I borrowed the original disks from I could not get past disk 2 without skipping and eventually used disk 5. I beleive the set was bad from the factory or in transit. With 7.2 last week I was able to install using all CDR therefore I do not beleive its a drive issue. Also It did not recoginze music disks in the drive. In root it gave me an error message telling me to log in as root to configure the drive. Hallo, ich bin absolut neu in der Liste und hoffe, daß die Sache nicht bereits in div. Threads behandelt worden ist. Regulär läuft bei mir KDE mit Schriftgröße 10. Manchmal jedoch und v.a. nach Unregelmäßigkeiten erscheinen nach einem Neustart die Schriften in Größe 8, ohne daß die Einstellungen sich geändert hätten. Es beginnt immer die die gleiche Prozedur: Öffnen Kontrollzentrum - Ändern der Größe auf 12 - Übernehmen - Schrift ist dann auf Größe 10 - Ausschalten - Wiederhochfahren - Schriften sind dann in Größe 12 - Kontrollzentrum - Verkleinern der Größe auf 10 - und Übernehmen. Um das ein für alle mal abzuschalten, wie kann ich verhindern, daß sich die Schriftgrößen ungefragt ändern? Grüße aus Berlin Frank Baule

Here is what I can say about it: - - I relate it to a bad Qt library, as the backtrace points to libqt-mt.so. - - It happens also in KDevelop (try "New project") and I found that people have the same problem in Debian. - - I had no problem with the first pack of 3.0.4 updates that SuSE released. This problem appears with the second pack of 3.0.4 updates from the 10th od October (the one still on their FTP server now). - - It happens only in 8.0. I upgraded one of my boxes to 8.1 yesterday, no problem (with KDE 3.0.4 and Qt 3.0.5 also). I sent an email to feedback(a)suse.de. Let's wait and see... IIRC, the second pack of updates contained a new Qt 3.0.5, a new kdelibs3, etc. Maybe SuSE included a bad patch. What bothers me is that the same problem exists in Debian... Maybe you could try to use another Qt package, or find the previous one. kmail - OpenPGP plugin not specified - where to get it?

Hi all, when I receive PGP encrypted Emails from Windose users (Eudora, PGP) kmail (from kde3.1b2) pops up an error saying "OpenPGP plugin not specified". Where do I get this plugin? I did read somewhere to check the German government sponsored Aegypten project, but there I did not see a plugin to download. Now I have to save the message, start kgpg and decrypt it, it would be so much nicer to have kmail handling the decryption for me. Thanks, Matt

kmail - mbox or maildir - which format is better?

Hi, kmail gives you the choice to set the mailbox format to mbox or maildir. I understand that mbox is one single file with all messages for a folder in it and mailir is one file for each message in a directory (for each folder). But what are the pros and cons for each format, which one is better or better for what? Thanks, Matt

Hello I'm using a SuSE 8.0 Professional on my work and home computers. Last week I updated the KDE packages to kde 3.0.4 and from that moment my kmail crashes everytime I hit the "send mail" button. The packages were taken from suse's home page and installed with the rpm -Uvh command (no error messages by installation).First I thought that the problem is in kdenetwork3-3.0.4-6 package that I have now and that's way on my home computer I let it out by the update but anyway kmail crashes sending the mail. So I suppose the problem is in one of the other kde packages. For sending mail I'm using the /usr/lib/sendmail option, my kmail package has the 1.4.3 version. Currently I have SUSE 7.2 but after a few reinstalls I could not make it recognize my IDE CD burner. Does 8.0 or 8.1 correct this error. The machine I have is a PII350 with 256 memory. Konqueror: double-click to preview

Hi All! How do I configure konqueror so that I need to double click the file to preview it instead of of just a single click? Granted I can press shift to get konqueror to select, rather thna peview, but I typically do not view files by clicking them, rather I more commonly select files to move, remove or copy them. And I will look out for that special keramik compilation that will work with SuSE 8.1, but only if I find some real improvements in my intention to getting it to actually work. Oh well. how to type diacritical marks using a modifier key?

Hallo KDE List, On my laptop when it was running Windows I could hold down a modifier key to type special accent marks. For example, the right-Alt key and "p" produces the German "oe" (o with two dots over it). How can I do this in KDE/Linux? I've looked at the keyboard language settings, but to no avail. Here is one of my still unaswered questions: Is it possible to have the keramik window decoration in SuSE 8.1? I have its keramik style installed and already click on shiny keramik buttons, but have no option to use the appropriate window decoration. I right-click on a decoration, then: Einrichten (must be "Setup"?) and Fensterdekoration ("window decoration"), but there is no keramik entry in the displayed list. I already used KDE 3.0.3 in my SuSE 8.0 installation. Installing the rpm I used there brought up the keramik entry, but not the right decoration; only some sort of ugly "standard deco". Come on, it has to work somehow, they advertise it's got the keramik window decoration included. And (I know this is the wrong list, but I'll make it short): on using xmms, I discovered that it has OSS sound drivers selected. They work fine with me, but don't they stop working after 30 days until you buy a registered version of this driver? I can select the arts driver and the visualizer field starts jerking around, but unheard; I can hear no sound. So: What's that with the default sound driver OSS and its "durability"? KMail forgetting folder preferences

All, SuSE 8.0. KDE 3.0.2 (latest YOU update said 3.0.2-1). I have 11 folders for mailing lists, and corresponding filter rules to populate them from the incoming mail. On all of them, I have checked KMail "Preferences > Folder holds a mailing list", and added the appropriate posting address to the associated field. However, a couple of the Properties were set more recently than others. I just noticed that the properties are set, and work correctly for most of my lists, but a couple of them, including suse-linux-e(a)suse.com, are not set. I can set them as often as I like, but the settings are lost when I close and re-open KMail. The Properties for the SuSE KDE folder (and most of my other folders) do not disappear. They were set several months ago. The unsettable ones were originally set at a later date, so I may have updated KDE in between the first bunch of settings and the later ones (attempted). Fix for broken battery meter in Suse Linux 8.1

Just worked through this problem on KDE, and sent this to them, and wanted you all to know about it too. Glen On a fresh load of Suse Linux 8.1 containing KDE 3.0.3 on my Dell Inspiron 8000 latptop, the battery meter was "X"'ed out and not displaying correctly. Moreover, if I tried to open the icon, I'd get a message that my ACPI kernel support was only partially enabled. Even building a new kernel with the ACPI support fully in the kernel didn't work. Many thanks to Derek Fountain who pointed me in the direction of his solution, which is to add: apm=on acpi=off to the GRUB menu or lilo.conf file, making them kernel parameters on boot. Booting in this way restored perfect service to my KLaptop battery meter! Submitted just to help others find a solution - the problem seems to be in the Dell BIOS's interaction with the SuSE kernel - but since it's manifested in KDE, I wanted to report it here. Glen

Hallo Liste, mein Konqueror hat seit gestern nur noch eine verkümmerte Bookmarkleiste und die Menueleiste. Die Ursache des ganzen muss ich wohl auf ein unbeabsichtigtes "Verstecken" der anderen Leisten zurückführen, was aber nicht widerrufbar ist. Ich habe schon probiert die Leisten zu de- und dann wieder zu aktivieren, was aber auch keine Erfolg brachte. Kennt jemand die Lösung für mein Problem, welches Konqueror unbrauchbar gemacht hat? Bug: kdesktop_lock gives no prompt after enabling focus follows mouse mode on windows

Hi, I've got the following problem on suse8.1 whenever I activate focus follows mouse mode: Whenever I lock the screen (which calls kdesktop_lock) I can't login again, because there is no prompt and I can't input anything into the password field of the login window. My best guess is the window never gets the focus. I checked the sources and saw that suse changed quite a lot in in that program (see kdm-lock.dif in the src.rpm of kdebase-3.0.3), so my guess is that it's a suse and not a kde bug. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone know of a fix? If not, where should I report the bug ? Holger.

Kmix doesn´t appear

Hello everybody, I´ve got a SuSE 81 with KDE 304. Kmix won´t start any more. whenm I start kmix in the toolbar appears a "block" but it doesn´t display anything. KDE 303 doesn't start !

Hello, I downloaded KDE 303 from Suse site. Actually this is an update to my Suse 73 system. Everything went fine during the upgrade, but... when I am starting the system he's starting the old KDE 221. I suspect that a variable, probably KDEDIR must be modified for the new instalation. Which I've done it by writing it to bashrc, .profile, even rcConfig, but still doesn't start. Could you help me with this issue ? I will greatly appreciate your help. Hi, ich benutze eine Standardinstallation von Suse 8.0. Nachdem ich gestern meine Grafikkarte ausgewechselt habe, hat yast die neue Karte eingebunden. Allerdings sind nun viele Applikationen mit einem defekten Font ausgestattet. Das heisst, ich sehe nur leere Vierecke statt den richtigen Font. Für die ICONs konnte ich einen anderen Font einstellen, aber z.B. für die console bekomme ich keinen anderen Font eingestellt. Hat jemand einen Tip für mich ? Vielen Dank für eure Hilfe. Andreas

I tried upgrading to the new version from the XFree86.org pages. I followed their Install procedure and can get kde to work if I log in and do startx. But my SuSE login window at bootup doesn't come up, just the login: prompt. What did I break? I can swap back in my old /usr/X11R6 and old /etc/X11 directories, and the login window comes back at bootup. What's missing? Does anyone at SuSE have a version of this that works properly? Applying the KDE 3.04 patch RPMs

I have Suse Pro 8.1. Using Yast2 I downloaded all the RPM patches for the KDE 3.04 update. However, I interrupted the download beacuse it was downloading all the language extensions despite these not being selected for download. Now that I have all the *.patch.rpm files, how do I install them? I was dismayed to find that Yast2 doesn't remember what it had downloaded and always starts downloading from the beginning so I can't seem to use Yast2 to do it. Unlike the Yast2 of old. How do I install them? Peter

No Help from KDE help as help doesn't start

Hi All! I just did an Upgrade to KDE 3.0.3 from the SuSE RPMs. Now, whenever I select Help from any application menu, nothing happens. Running something like "khelpcenter help:/kmail" directly from the command works with out a problem. However, the help menu within Kmail does nothing (or at least nothing I can see). Seems like I got a path screwed up somewhere, but I really don't know where to look. This is a problem i've been having to do with my x windows. Basically i've got an optiplex260 with on board graphics. I've harassed the newsgroup at my university and i don't know what to do next tro get suse running(8.0).Maybe something to do with my partitioning? I've done some investigating and have found that my computer video controllers and the sound, video and game controllers are on-board video = Intel 845G PCI Accelerated SVGA , sound sound, video and game = Intel Pro 1000 MT Network I have problems getting the floppy working so am unable to post the log files.However upon looking at it thoroughly i found in the boot.log file : <3> Unknown bridge resource 2 :assuming transparent PCI-IDE :unknown IDE controller on PCI bus 00devicef9 VID=8086 DID24cb PCI: Device 00:1f .1 not available because of resource collisions PCI_IDE: (ide _setup_pci_device:)could not enable device. This seems to me to be the problem. However in investigating ways of accessing my log files I came acoss an interesting program called ltools which allows you to access linux filesystems on your windows pc or vice-versa. It checked my partitions on my computer which are as follows: /dev/hda1 :de 31MB from CHS /dev/hda2: NTFS/HPFS 43182MB /dev/hda3: Win ExPar 33126MB /dev/hda5:Linux Swap2047MB /dev/hda6:Linux EXT2 31078MB It told me that I have 'Bad Magic Number in superblock. Not Linux. Error loading superblock. This got me thinking, is my partioning incorrect? I used the partition magic 7 wizard to set up a linux partition booting from lilo.

There are Suse rpm's available for this version. After doing the upgrade, i was not able any longer to change the background, and several other little problems. Koffice Print Preview problem

Hoping that this is the correct list to ask, I have a problem with KOffice in SuSE8.1. Printing with my Epson 670 works correctly in all resolutions, using CUPS. But with all the KOffice programs, when I go to Print Preview, I get the error message:- Could not start Ghostscript. This is most likely caused by an incorrectly specified interpreter. I have looked in the 8.1 manuals, the SuSE databases and Togan's Unofficial FAQ. But this is not mentioned. As printing works, I don't know what is wrong. The printer was automatically found and set up during installation. Can anyone please help with a solution to this problem? Where and what is this interpreter, and how do I check if it is correct? I've not had a problem with previous versions. Many thanks Keith

Bugs in KMail, KDEInit?

Hi all - I submitted the following bugs to KDE, but I'm wondering if anyone has any insight from a SuSE perspective? BUG # 1 - KMail won't die. On a newly-installed Suse Linux 8.1 system with KDE 3.0.3 and KMail 1.4.3, KMail fails to shut down correctly on exit. Whether I exit with the "X" box or through the File menu, a child KMail process continues running on my server. Compact-Folders-On-Exit is DISABLED, so this is not related to those bugs. This occurs whether I check mail or not, so this is not related to the POP process bugs. Even if I just start KMail, and immediately quit, the process stays there. The process is killable using killall, or the normal signal 15 kill, and it does not appear to use any CPU time, it just sits there... but because it's there, KMail cannot be restarted until that process is killed. I notice that kdeinit is leaving phantom kio_pop3 and kio_smtp processes around, too, but even if there are no such processes, KMail's child still lives on. BUG #2 - KDEInit doesn't die. On a fresh load of Suse 8.1 using KDE 3.0.3, I'm noticing problems with kdeinit's process management. kdeinit child processes - especially smtp, pop3, and http processes, seem to stay in the process table even after konqueror or kmail are completely exited/killed. The kdeinit parent process - and sometimes one or more children - stay running even after I log out. They stay running even if I kill the X server manually, or shut the X server down completely, having already logged out. During the logout process, kdeinit can take a long time (10 seconds or more) to terminate the X server and shut itself down even partially. This problem did not exist under Suse 8.0/KDE 3.0.1. I saw another bug similar to this about KDE 2.2.1, but this appears to be a new problem in 3.0.3

Problems with kppp status for default user

I configured kppp for root and it works fine. When I logged in as a default user (with dialout rights) kppp had no settings and I couldn't create one. So I changed the group of ..../kde3/share/config/kppp.rc from root to that with dialout rights. Well, now I can use these settings to establish an internet connection for default users. However, after the connection has been established I miss the task in the controllbar (available for root), which shows me the connection status and which I normally use to disconnect. How can I get this 'task' for default user's? Do I need a copy a file into the user's home dir? Thx. Andrew BTW: I am using SuSE 7.3 and KDE 3.0.3

different desktops

Hello, would it be possible to arrange the deskktops differently. One desktop only for office programms, another for GIS etc.. I tried it and it doesn't work, they seemed to be linked with each other, when I delete one icon, it also disappears on all the other desktops. No preview for jpeg files!

Hi, I am using KDE 3.0.3 on SuSE 7.3. Preview of gif files works fine in konqueror but not for jpeg. However libjpg is installed and the image will be displayed when I click on it. I also can open jpeg's with Kuickshow. But I can't open a jpeg image with Kpaint or Kview - I assume it relates to the same problem why there's no preview in konqueror. Thanks for any help. Andrew

Login Panel

Hi, One small problem after upgrading to KDE 3.0.3 is that the login panel is the KDE one and not the SuSE one. When I try to edit the login panel as root with the Control Control Centre I see the entries for the SuSE control panel. I save my changes, log out and see the KDE panel ! SuSEconfig gives an message about /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmpc and /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmpc.SUSEconfig not being changed. Is this the problem ? -- john

Error while initiating sound server

Hi, I upgraded from KDE 3.0.0 to 3.0.3 in an effort to get rid of a problem with the aRTs sound server. It did not help. I get sound when using xmms. But RealPlayer fails to play. I try to cycle aRTs and the various options but at best it works only sometimes. It used to work OK with SuSe 7.2. At present I get the artsmessage "Error while initiating the sound driver can't start sound i/o the sound server will continue using the null sound device" If I set aRTS on and press the Test Sound button it actually works for a moment but then the message appears. At login I often see a repeated cannot find sound module message (before upgrading to SuSe 8.0 and after). Any suggestions please? -- John

change icon

Hello, I want to change some icons from "?" to the desired icon on the desktop, I installed the software packetages afterwards therefore the owner-ship is root. I ran first chmod to change it as user, then chown and finally I changed the icons as root, but in all cases the change only lasted for a few days. But the worst of the problem is that Yast2 will not start. The sand clock revolves for a while .......then nothing. I first noticed that Yast2 was sick when I was going to reinstall webcam apps which would not load. i.e. the KDE 303 upgrade did something to the webcam (video) apps. Since Qt3 looks to be involved I installed it again and the option Qt3 stuff , to be sure. But it has not helped. Main apps such as StarOffice, QCad, Mozilla 1.1, Digikam are OK After reading some of the threads in the KDE forum it seems that: Using Package Manager for the KDE upgrade is not safe. Using rpm command line strings is subject to habits (good or bad). It would be really helpful if SuSe had a text that one could cut and past line by line in the correct order to do the upgrade proceedure (gee that's almost a script or some kind of program to automate the process ... i.e. something that YasT should do.) Any suggestions please 1) to stop the crashes 2) procedure to regain "lost" apps like Yast2 3) to do it again but correctly ? thanks, -- John

I had real problems with kinternet, so much so that opposite to what Carl has suggested (Not that he is wrong - try his suggestion first), I enabled dial-on-demand and stopped using kinternet. The latest problem I had was that it could not find ippp0 (ISDN) and so kept failing. If you do choose dial-on-demand there are certain provisos: Close your applications when finished, particularly if you use Mozilla Set the time before disconnecting (in Yast2) to a low value Watch your messages log file like a hawk to make sure your machine disconnects. Carl, I am still looking at the fonts problem but have been very busy lately - privately as well as work - I have not found anything. However, I do have a question for everyone which I may have missed first time round.....have you used the Sax program to set fonts (or even edited XF86Config, even though SuSE frowns upon it), to check that the fonts are where you think they are and are being loaded? So far tonight, I have neglected my diabetic pet, bent the frame of my cubicle from punching it in absolute wordless rage and frustration, and severely frightened the poor woman who came to empty the wastebaskets and saw the look on my face. I have job deadline looming, and documents that aren't anywhere near finished, and no fonts. I have OpenOffice 1.0.1. My documents seem to display in one single sheisenfont. That is, no matter what I choose for the font attribute of a Paragraph Style or a Character Style, they are all and always substituted by the exrementafont. Once again, I have gone to the KDE Control Center, and System, and Font Installer. I heeded the warning that I must use Administrator Mode if I want my font-ish stuff applied globally. I viewed the dual windows with "Install From:" on the left, and "Install To:" on the right. There's nothing of importance in the "Install From:" window. The "Install To:" window already has dozens... hundreds, thousands of fonts in X11 Fonts Directory. There are files in the /75dpi directory, in the /Speedo directory, in the /Type1 directory, in the /URW directory, in the /misc directory, in the /truetype directory, in the /uni directory ... do I really need to go on???? They are bloody THERE! I'm looking at them... hundreds and hundreds of font files of several types. They are sitting there, apparently mocking me, in what this interface implies is ALREADY the place where fonts are supposed to go. There is nothing to suggest that I should need to perform some additional step. There's no other button to press, or field to fill in. Many of the names of those font files appear in the pick-lists within OpenOffice and other K and X applications. But it doesn't matter. I can pick any font I like, for any purpose (except for window dressing, which has flavors of Nimbus, and seems to work). It doesn't matter what I pick, it will be substituted for that one, single, ugly pieceofcrap font. I don't know what the substitute font is (it's something that runs the letters together and generally looks too ugly to NOT be intentional), and I don't care. When the "obvious" things, within the KDE interface did NOTHING to access the fonts that are all sitting there, I looked back in e-mails in this list, and went to the suggested SDB pages for 7.3 and 7.1 and did what they suggested, and it had a wonderful effect... NOT A DAMN THING! There are now a couple of extra files in /etc, and nothing at all has changed. Yes, I exited and restarted. No effect. What are all those .pfa, and .pfb, and .spd, and .pcf.gz, and .ttf files FOR, if they all already appear in the directories where the System>Font Installer (root) expects them to be, and they STILL %$#@&!! refuse to appear in my documents and applications? What is the Font Installer FOR, if not to install the fonts?? I have looked and looked and looked, and there is NO function or button or menu item that says: "Activate all the fonts that are already installed and uselessly sitting there." Really. I looked. I ran the Qt Configuration utility, and it was useless. I don't *need* to specify a substitution font... I need the bloody, actual FONTS! If the KDE Control Center is not able to make all the required things happen, it should not pretend that it can. The night security people are kicking out stragglers now, so I have to leave, with my work undone and in disarray. Tonight would not be a good night for anybody to be jaywalking, or driving badly in my city... Tomorrow will be really fun, explaining why I don't have the work done. Why is it this way? What is the purpose of making it this way? Why the mocking list of all the fonts that refuse to appear in my documents? If there is an "Activate your fonts" function, why must it be hidden somewhere? kinternet won't break the connection!

Hello. I run Suse 8.0 and update as and when it is necessary. I have a peculiar problem with kinternet. Although I click on stop and the connection seems to be broken, kinternet then proceeds to re-connect. The only way that I can break the connection is to log off and shut down. Any suggestions? Fwd: kicker and external task bar.

Further to my last post. After I restarted KDE the extension task bar which is very conveniently located at the top of the screen ,did not reappear,this happens about once in 10 or 12 openings. I was able to expand the kicker panel to the full screen width using the preferences box. The intermittent extension taskbar problem is still unsolved. KDE1 used to have it at the top of the screen by default so why was it buried in the main kicker bar ? Does not anyone use the extension task bar at top of screen? kicker

I am running dual monitors and kicker is only setup on the left hand one. I was wondering how to get it to cover the right hand screen as I viewed Kandalfs useful tips ,it said to click on the right hand end of the tool bar. Whereupon the whole bar slowly moved to the bottom of the right hand screen then kept moving to the right and disappeared. I guess it will reappear when next i bootup. The real point of my mail is how can one move the wanted email addresses from the "recent addresses" to the main address book? I'm running SuSE 8.0 and recently used apt-get/synaptic to upgrade from 3.0.2 to 3.0.3. Now, whenever I press a "Help" button in any KDE-native app (KMail, etc.) nothing happens.
