[opensuse-kde] Changes in the KDE repositories due to the upcoming move to Plasma 5 as default desktop in Tumbleweed

As part of the preparations for the move to Plasma 5 as the new default desktop in Tumbleweed, we also had a look at the available KDE repositories on openSUSE Build Service. In the last few days we have been reorganizing them to reflect the new situation which will follow the new upstream structure (Frameworks, Plasma and Applications). We have updated our wiki page to reflect the new setup, which will become in effect sometime tomorrow (1 May). All repo's are already there, but some cleanup might be required. The main changes are in the KDE:Unstable repositories where we moved to a similtar setup as the main repositories (Frameworks/Plasma, Applications, Extra). A number of packages will therefor move from KDE:Unstable:Extra to KDE:Unstable:Applications. Also here the suffix "5" for KDE Applications packages will be removed (e.g. kate5 -> kate). Users that are using currently Framework based applications from KDE:Unstable:Extra are adviced to use zypper dup when moving to the new KDE:Applications. If you find any breakage caused by this switch, please let us know so that we can fix those. This is an excerpt from an executable file (currently 177 lines) I use called "setup" in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/: #xrandr --dpi 108 --output VGA-0 --mode 1440x900 # ati analog #xrandr --dpi 108 --output VGA1 --mode 1440x900 # intel analog #xrandr --dpi 108 --output VGA-1 --mode 1440x900 # nouveau analog I uncomment whichever of the lines it contains I wish Xorg to use. In ~/.kde4/share/config/kdedrc is autoload=false under [Module-kscreen], which works as expected in KDE4, and it's symlinked to ~/.config/kdedrc. In a fresh installation of TW20150425 with K5, the applicable uncommented line is either being overridden, or disregarded, both by the KDM3 greeter if I boot into graphical, and by startx /usr/bin/startkde when I boot into multi-user or start a Plasma session from KDM3. If I boot into multi-user and just run startx, I get expected results from xrandr in an IceWM session, which is also the results I get from startx /usr/bin/twm and from startx /usr/bin/startkde booted to 13.2 (KDE4), 13.1 (KDE4), Rawhide (K5) and F22 (K5). If instead of using setup I configure Xorg as desired through /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, then KDM3 and Plasma both produce expected results. Is this a new expectation, or breakage, and if breakage, breakage where? Are scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/ no longer being run by default? [opensuse-kde] Availability KDE Application releases (specifically for openSUSE 13.2 users)

Dear openSUSE KDE User, As indicated some time ago, the initial decision was not to release the KDE Application releases as of version 15.04 for any openSUSE target except Tumbleweed. KDE Applications 15.04 would made available for Tumbleweed users together with the switch of the default KDE desktop to Plasma 5. Based on this initial message we got some requests to make these releases also available for openSUSE 13.2 users as that they also already have the necessary KDE Frameworks and Plasma 5 releases through the update repositories. The team discussed the topic again and I can now announce that we will start building the Frameworks based applications also for openSUSE 13.2. What does this mean concretely ? Newer packages that will be build against KDE Frameworks, will not have a different package name. e.g. Kate will remain Kate. If the KDE4 based version of a package will need to remain, then this package will have a 4 as suffix. In most cases if both packages are provided, then they will conflict with eachother. e.g. installing kate4 will automatically remove kate and vice versa. The updates will be provided through two repositories 1) Official KDE Application releases will be made available through a seperate repository KDE:Applications, which is build for openSUSE 13.2 and openSUSE Factory/Tumbleweed. It is not necessary for Tumbleweed users to activate this repository as updates will come with regular Tumbleweed snapshots. The link for this repo for openSUSE 13.2 is http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Applications/openSUSE_13.2/ 2) Other KDE/Qt based packages (not part of KDE Applications) will be made available through the existing KDE:Extra repository. As soon as a package becomes Frameworks-based, the old kdelibs 4.x based one will be renamed with suffix 4 and then built for older openSUSE (< 13.2) releases. The newer package should only be activated for openSUSE 13.2 and Tumbleweed. What should you be aware off ? The environment where Frameworks based applications are running inside a KDE4 desktop is untested. Also upstream is only testing how KDE4 based applications are behaving inside a Plasma 5 desktop. Although we are not expecting issues, one can never be sure. If it becomes clear that this is causing an unstable desktop for openSUSE 13.2 users, then we would revert the changes for openSUSE 13.2 and remain there with pure KDE4 applications. [opensuse-kde] Plasma 5 and System Load Viewer widget

I cannot find the original email, but someone wrote already that System Load Viewer should work in current Plasma 5 (installed from [1]. So, what is the trick to make it work? I've added the widget to the panel (panel is on the left side of the screen), to the very bottom, and all I see are 3 empty bars. Will greatly appreciate any recommendations and workarounds to make it work, or diagnose the issue. If it ain't broken don't fix it. People rely on these very common repos for productive machines. They do security updates when available. Want to live "KDE4.0 is not KDE4.0" one more time, really? So my opinion is: think about it. Please don't mix. The stable version must stay stable. If people are risk liking they have Tubleweed. If not, why we have Tubleweed then? [opensuse-kde] KDE repository for SLED 12?

Hi, while learning that SLED 12 doesn't contain KDE anymore, I stumbled about Markus mail: http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/SuSE/2014-11/msg00274.html (I know this is a opensuse mailing list but I don't know where else to ask :-)) So I took a look at the available repositories at https://de.opensuse.org/KDE_Repositorys and realized that there is also a SLE_12 branch at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Current/ However, the web page mentions that plasma is not part of these current releases as it is under LTS since 4.11 (whatever that means). So I wonder if this is the right repo for installing KDE including the plasma desktop for SLED 12? Or is there any other repo? The SLE_12 branch below Distro:/Factory seems to be quite outdated. I am sorry if my post should have come across as "uncivil". This was of course far from my intention. So, @Cor, if you read this, sorry if you did understand it like this. The issue is not about my own view, I can setup a system from the scratch or repair if there is need. But about all the userbase out there that is not "easily" going and needs at least a reliable system to work. These users are the real ambassadors of Linux as a whole and I am sometimes a bit frustrated to be told: I followed all indication for conservative behaviour but after the update the system is broken. Generally in these cases the culprit up to now is third party software and not opensuse. If someone of them tells me that he/she/it mingled with things he was not qualified, of course that does not apply. The problem is the first case. One of the reasons for the reactions is, I dare to belief, a somewhat not clear understanding of what was proposed here. Thing is: I myself think of setting up a second testing machine for Tumbleweed with the new libraries and evtl. the application base in order to report bugs and have a smooth change in the future. I cannot tell you by the way how happy I am with the current 13.2 release because practically, a part of some very minor bugs, all "just works". Which makes it the ideal distribution to step into the experience of Linux and makes it in my view also a good evergreen candidate (but this is only my quite uninformed opinion and may be there are reasons for the Evergreen team not to share this view at all). When you asked: "how is this untested", this referred to the sentence of the original email that was probably meant differently but did leave me a bit...worried, to say the least. So to begin with: what entity we are speaking about? How many applications would be part of this. My fear is here also that, what will cause you pain and effort and steal a lot of resources and manpower, will turn against you if anything could possibly go wrong. I do understand (by reading everything several times) what you want to do, and it is a noble thought. But I still do not think it is good idea. I do think instead that Tumbleweed needs more publicity for being used by a greater userbase (as this of course will help you to repos where "too much" for them. Whether I do agree on this or not, what I do is: I understand and totally accept people who need a conservative KDE desktop for everyday work. And ...congratulations, IMO 13.2 IS such a product. (Now isn't this beautiful news). At least this is my idea about how to handle the "generational change" this time. Hi guys, today I've fogot my lappy at the office. So I "stole" a laptop at customer site, pick the plasma5 live iso and start it on usb3 key. Working the whole day with without any crashes ... come on on unstable software ... is this a joke ? :-) big kudos to our great maintainers and kde team. Guys you rock hard. [opensuse-kde] Plasma5 Folder View Setting Not Saved

Hey, Folder view settings aren't saved when logging out of KDE on Plasma5. It switches back to "Desktop Layout" everytime. Any info on this/bug report? This is a new thing and didn't happen before, but I am testing plasma5 again so I'm guessing it's a new bug. Hello openSUSE KDE users and contributors, This mail outlines our plans for moving towards Plasma 5 as a default desktop for the next openSUSE release, includinga tentative action plan and where help from you all is required. We do not believe on pushing changes on users without some sort of preparation, therefore this document describes the transition plan. See the previous mails for a rationale of this decision. ==== The plan ==== Phase 1: Gather input from the community In this phase, we would like people from the community, if they are able to, to test the currently-available code. It's quite easy, as all the required software is already available directly in Tumbleweed. You should install Plasma 5 from there (bear in mind that its install will not coexist with the 4.x workspace) and simply try using it. We are most interested with feedback, in particular: - Testing packaging - Testing upgrades of packages - Helping with building openQA tests - Checking for missing functionality Feedback will tracked through the following connect.opensuse.org polls: - Overall experience [1] : What does fowrk for you? What doesn't? - Missing functionality [2]: What are you missing from the 4.x workspace that you deem irrepleaceable? - Upgrade experience [3]: Was the upgrade from the 4.x packages smooth? Did anything break? - Visual and hardware-related issues [4]: Is Plasma 5 running well with your hardware? Bugs in the software should be reported upstream, but any issue in the packaging should be reported to openSUSE's Bugzilla. Phase 2: OpenQA testing We will discuss with the rest of the openSUSE community on how to handle Plasma 5 on openQA. This is where we need your help the most, because openQA needles are an important part of the openSUSE testing and we need many to ensure a smooth experience (and transition from 4.x), and we need a lot of them to ensure there are no hiccups down the road. Refer to http://os-autoinst.github.io/openQA/ to see how you can contribute. This phase will go as long as we can get comparable results as the 4.x workspace on openQA. === What about applications ? === As with regards to application releases from KDE (KDE Applications xx.yyy), our plan is to use directly what KDE releases, meaning that we will switch to KF5-based applications once upstream makes stable releases of them. If there are no KF5-based releases of a particular application, the currently available 4.x version will be used. === New repository layout === As part of the migration plan, when Plasma 5 becomes the default desktop in openSUSE the following changes will take place: - KDE:Frameworks5 (already the devel project for Plasma 5 and the KF5 libraries) will take the place of KDE:Distro:Factory (slowly phased out) - Application releases will be hosted in a separate development project, KDE:Applications KDE:Current, offering 4.x based releases, will be kept for users of past openSUSE versions. === Contingency plan === In case the issues reported during the testing period are too severe, we will revert back to the 4.x workspace and await further improvements from upstream. === How can I help ? === First and foremost: testing! We've been running the KF5 based desktop for a while but the team is small, we need more eyes looking for potential issues. Secondly: openQA tests are an essential foundation of an always-stable Tumbleweed, therefore this is another eare where help is warranted. A third area is documentation: wiki pages, guides, anything that can help in the transition. The team can help providing the required information. Above all: always be constructive when reporting issues. Saying "It sucks, get back to 4.x" is not only not going to help, but it is severely demotivating and that can be a problem with a task of this size. Surprisingly, no one screams about it so far, but that is close to showstoper issue, so maybe it's something wrong on my system... So: 1. start kwrite 2. write something 3. click close window button You'll see that the dialog will start to appear to ask if I would like to save or discard the changes, but at that moment kwrite will crash with segfault. Same story with any other application that wants to show dialogs, like system settings when you want to install new fonts and it asks if you want it to be user-specific or system-wide. It appears to be quite serious issue, potential loss of any unsaved data if you forgot to save in time. I have a name and corresponding IP address in /etc/hosts like: 192.168.1.15 test When entering this name, test, in the text field for the name of the IMAP server, and pressing Autodetect in the tab Advanced, I get an error that the server can not be found. It is also not possible to enter an IP address in that field. I can make a connection using "ssh user@test" or do "ping test" Any suggestions? -- fr.gr. Hi, I did a quick test with Plasma 5 live media under virtualbox.. Not bad. Why kicker menu and not kickoff ? I really dislike kicker.. On login screen, is there a way to show battery info only if there is a battery ? On desktop machine does not make sense.. There are some software that IMHO does not fit in live media: qt5 assistant qt5 designer qt5 D-bus viewer AMZ dowloader grsync kompare kruler I'm not sure about amarok, for a lots of people a simple media player is enough. We badly need better artwork for the next release, the light green and grey reminds me windows 95. The 13.2 is one of the worst release under this point of view. I'm not a big fan of this "new" flat and minimal look but maybe I only need to get used to it.. [opensuse-kde] Dolphin can generate hundreds of SSH connections when using FISH

Hi, I have weird problem with Dolphin. I'm used to use FISH (fish://login@server/) to connect to SSH server to e.g. manage files on web. This has been working well for ages. But recently (KDE 4.14.6, openSUSE 13.2) it sometimes fails. I connect to some server, work there for a while and suddenly I'm disconnected. It happens only sometimes and on some servers. Server logs then show hundreds of new SSH connections within few minutes. I'm disconnected because of server settings (SSH connections limit, ...), but I blame Dolphin because of this problem, because in that time, no other SSH connection to particular server is opened and there is no reason why Dolphin should suddenly try to open hundreds new connections. Hi there. A couple of days ago I've sent you an example of a breeze icon set folder recolored to match the new openSUSE colorscheme. Now, I've done the same with Nitrux icons + I've changed the oxygen colorscheme also. Here's a few screens for you to see how it looks in practice. Ken and Zvezdana, what do you think about it? As far as I could notice, the plasma 5 colorscheme and themes have been already done, but the breeze folders are default. I could recolor them to fit our colorscheme.
