SuSE 9.2 Pro and Touchpad Issues

Hello all, Just received my copy of SuSE 9.2 Pro and completed a clean install on my Toshiba Satellite 2435 laptop. For whatever reason, the laptop's touchpad was not detected/installed correctly. Using the laptop has become extremely difficult. The mouse opens *almost* every window and app that it trails over and hardware clicking/tapping doesn't work. I don't recall what driver I've used in the past with SuSE and this laptop--truth is, I never looked. Currently I'm using the generic PS/2 Mouse (Aux-Port) driver as indicated in the Hardware section of YaST's Control Center and the touchpad is somewhat functional, albeit with irritating side effects. With previous versions of SuSE the touchpad was detected/configured correctly and without my intervention. Anyone using SuSE 9.2 with a similar machine? Searches on SuSE's Support Portal turned up zero articles related to ALPS Touchpad devices. KGpg und Kmail

Hello List, i recently updated to KDE3.4 and since then encrypted mails are not shown correctly. In the previous version of KMail I used to type in my passphrase and the encrypted data was shown, now this is no longer working. The question for teh passphrase is no longer popping up. So I have to copy the data to the clipboard and decrypt it there. Has anyone experienced the same behavior and is able to help me?? Portable KMail

I was wondering if anyone has, or would it be possible, to make a version of Kmail that is portable. By that I mean made so that you could have it on a CD, or usb drive that you could take with you. Mail and settings could be stored and saved there, and would not be kept on the workstation. Like thunderbird I guess. I have tried thunderbird, esp using win machines, but unless I am missing a setup option, it does not seem to thread messages properly. But, the older versions would just run from a directory, on your desktop or whereever. All you email was stored there too. You could take it all with you. Unfotunately the newer versions have an install routin that installs the app in the normal places. I really like kmail, and was wondering if/how to make it "portable". Printing Issues Galore

We are having major problems with our Athlon 64 system that is being used as a desktop. We are running a Brother printer that is not listed in the drivers list, but has been printed to using the gimp-print driver. (known to work the largest number of printers) Now Brother doesn't "support" linux, but they do provide linux drivers for some of their other printers. Also the printer is similar to our HP laserjet, and it runs flawlessly. It seems most of the issues are coming from printing from OpenOffice, which seems weird. But it gets even weirder. Now looking at the print queue it looks like this: krusty:~ # lpq mfc7820n is ready and printing Rank Owner Job File(s) Total Size active brian 4 (stdin) 6144 bytes 1st brian 5 Untitled1 26624 bytes 2nd brian 6 Job Report - KJobViewer 56320 bytes 3rd brian 7 file:/// 232448 bytes 4th brian 8 file:/// 232448 bytes 5th brian 9 file:/// 232448 bytes But nope, it isn't printing. Any suggestions?? We have removed the printer, and re-added it. Hooked it up directly through USB, and also had it networked as well. While the printer was networked, we could only get one page to be sent to the printer and then the CUPS server said the printer "wasn't ready" any more. Dictionary in panel in 9.3?

You guys helped me get a dictionary in my panel in 9.2 but when I did a fresh install of 9.3 I guess the system did not load that same file. When I right click on panel and go to add to panel -> applet there is no dictionary listed in the pop up box. Neither can I find a reference to dictionary in the KDE menues. Last time this happened in 9.2 someone told me the name of a file to get from install software. Can anyone please let me know what the file name is for 9.3. If the same as for 9.2 please tell me the file name again since I no longer know what it is. Thanks very much, Andy

kdm exit problem with SuSE 9.3

Sometimes while exiting a session the kdm doesn't come back but I get the console text login. I have to restart the X11 system afterwards. /var/log/messages : Apr 28 09:07:41 autoyast kdm[6447]: Unknown session exit code 0 (sig 6) from manager process It's not consistant, about 10% of all logouts. I use SuSE 9.3 with the NVIDIA drivers fetched by online update. Any tip ? Installing the latest NVIDIA drivers by hand isn't a good option as I have to do it for 30+ computers each kernel update. Stop login requirement in Kmail.

I think I did something while doing a fresh install of 9.3 that requires me to login each and every time I try to get email in Kmail. How can I stop the login screen from poping up all the time? thanks, Andy

Suse 9.2 -> KDE 3.4: Some packages were not updated

Kitchensync & IPAQ => who did succeed ?

Hi guys, I'm trying already for MONTHS to get met IPAQ synchronized with my Kontakt resources through kitchensync. I've never succeeded and couldn't find anyone yet neither. BTW : i'm running SuSE 9.3 with all newest software for the moment. Who did succeed in this, and is willing to help me ? kmail and inline image viewing

Hi, I am using KDE 3.4 (Level b) on Suse 9.1. I use Kmail as my email client. I have selected to display images as inline by clicking on View->Attachments->Inline. However when I get emails with multiple images, there is empty space (of appropriate size) where an image should be. All images are displayed at the end of the email. amarok 100% usage when paused with 9.3.

hello, i've noticed that amarok get 100% cpu when paused, coming back to normal when playing or stopped. i am using regular packages from suse 9.3 + you, nothing more. i have a shuttle SN41G2 with nforce2. i saw a similar bug : http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98223 but it is supposed to be fixed a long time ago ... ??? paul.

Hello Alvin, PC's using Windows use a terminal connection programme called EXCEED, that uses "XDMCP Query" to connect to the SUSE box. This brings up the SUSE KDE standard login interface screen to login. The useradd command does it all for ssh and rlogin users: directory generation together with startup files and /etc/passwd entry - no problem. But it does not provide for users to login by the KDE Yast interface ??!? Yes, the user sees ok the login screen. Yes they are able to type in their username and password - but get error then. "User account has been disabled". Installing users manually as administrator using Yast administration tool makes all connection types to work ok. Hello David, I haven't used XDMCP before. The closest thing I've used to that is VNC but I don't think that what you want to use. I just did the useradd command on my machine. It adds the account but doesn't create the home directory. Did you create a home directory (e.g. /home/user)? Once I created the home directory (e.g. mkdir) then I was able to log in as the user into KDE. Then again, I'm logging in locally. Does the user see the KDE login screen (GUI)? If so, are they able to type in their username and password? If not, it sounds like X authentication credentials. Here it is: I would like to add user accounts to a SUSE 9.2 server system using a shell command, similar to useradd, that is able to create a login account that works for users logging in through the KDE Yast interface(XDMCP query from a PC say) as well as, of-course, the standard ssh, rlogin way. If a useraddYast shell command does not exist, what, in your opinion, is the best method to create an account that works ?, With Much Thanks for your kind help, David A.-

bizzare volume window in KDE/SuSE 9.3

Hi, I played a little mor with kmix and found out that I can change the volume and that the anoying window in the mid of the screen sets the progress bar according to the selected volume. However, after changing the volume the system decides that this is too loud for me and changes the volume back to zero. The window in the middle of the screen does not disappear and the kmix window cannot be closed. Maybe there are some okay-buttons that are not displayed or soemthing that like. If there are any hints how to get rid of this volume window, they would be highly appreciated. Update from 9.1 -> 9.3 Volume popup

Hi, I updated from 9.1 to 9.3 and the sound card stoped to work. I reinstalled it with yast and it works now. However kmix behaves strangely. When I start kde a pop up in the middle of the screen appears showing "Volume" and a progress bar (at the very beginning). kmix is started and connot be killed. It seems that it does not find a suitible mixer. I found some web pages that suggested removing the KDE mixer package. I did this, kmix disappeared, but the pup is still there. It is really anoying, since this window cannot be closed. If somebody replies to this, could you please CC me directly? How to make KDE the default for startx -- :1

SuSE 9.2 with KDE 3.4. Used to be, a second person on my machine could do a text login at the F1 console, run "startx -- :1 and find themselves in a GUI session on F8. That second session type seemed to default to KDE, which is what I normally run when I login via the KDM login. For a couple of months now, startx -- :1 launches an FVWM session, instead of KDE. I'm still running KDE on F7 (started from KDM login), but my wife is losing patience since she would prefer KDE for her session as well. I've been snooping a trail of config files, and haven't seen anything that I recognize as the source of the problem. If I recall, we first noticed it after I installed KDE 3.4. KDE 3.4 itself seems fine. I did a full install, rather than attempting an update. Hints? Pointers? Thanks, Kevin

Mounten eines Cryptocontainers mittels DeviceIcon auf Desktop?

Guten Morgen Ich habe mit hilfe der letzten CT´ Artikel einen Kryptocontainer auf meinem USB Stick erzeugt. ->100MB file aus crandom, danach cryptoloop (loop0) initialisiert und ein ext2 filesystem darin erzeugt. Funzt alles wunderbar. Allerdings muss ich den container immer von hand auf der console mounten, unter anderem weil ein 20stelliges Passwort eingegeben werden muss. Meine frage ist nun, ob es möglich ist, dass dies mittels eines DeviceIcons vom Desktop aus gemacht werden kann, natürlich mit passwortabfrage dialog. Ist sowas möglich?? Markus Rüttimann

Hi all, This is what happens when you're 70 and have too much time on your hands. After I got /home in a separate partition, I tried to update to KDE 3.4. But Kmail disappeared. Plus, I cannot find a panel dictionary either. Anyone have suggestions on these two items? Thanks for your help. Andy

It's in your KDM configuration file '/etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc'. This is your global configuration file that overrules the KDE default in '/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc'. And this is an *old* (read KDE 3.3) file. Copy the new one or remove the old one and you have your keyboard. That's too much or too risky? Add the option 'ServerVTs=-7' to the [General] section. Hello List, after i updated to KDE 3.4 all WebSites i'm trying to print out of Konqueror have a to big font size, so sites witch were suitable to one Din A4 Site before, now need two ... Now i'm locking for scaling the sites to make them suitable again, but i can not find any control for this in KDEPrint, even not in the Preview ... There is a control for the Site view, but this shows me yust more or less of the site i'm about to print, but it's not scaling them. So is this yust somthing i have to live with, or am i to blind to find it ... Thanks for advice Michael

Hallo, in kde 3.3 and before there was an option (SessionTypes) for /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc in which you could specify the contents of the session menu of kdm from which the user can choose the sessiontype (kde, fvwm,...) he wants to start. Since suse9.3 and kde 3.4 this seems to have changed. The kdmrc-variable SessionTypes is now invalid and the session menu contains always the same session types. The problem is I would like to add another menuentry for another session that is later on started in the Xsession script. Does anyone know how and where to configure another session than the default ones for kdm? *newbie* How to install HOME in separate partition?

Hi again, I'm trying to set up my home directory in a separate partition that will be accessible to both 9.2 (now) and later to 9.3 (when it arrives). I have burned all my current /home/ data into a CD. I want to practice by re-installing 9.2 on a clean hard drive (clean other than having WinXP in hda1). 1. During the re-install, what do I do to have the installation install the /home/ directory into a separate partition? *OR* 2. Should I install the /home/ data from my CD onto a separate partition before I re-install from scratch? If THIS is the case, How do I not install the home directory during the re-install? And how do I firsst install the CD into that specific directory? 3. In either of the two choices above, do I need to have some kind of linkage from one partition to another? And do I have to have a different kind of link when I install 9.3? Could someone explain to a newbie how 9.2 in hda3 would know to put the proper data in /home/ that resides in hda4. And If 9.3 goes into hda5, is that going to work also? I truly have read and read - until I got sooo mixed up. I need this practical application with having the home directory in a separate partition because it will help me understand better. Thank you guys a whole lot. Andy

Hi, how come that konqueror does not show my favicon, while firefox and mozilla do? # file favicon.ico favicon.ico: ms-windows icon resource - 1 icon The file $HOME/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/faviconrc does not contain the sitename that provides the favicon. Hi I have suse9.2 on 2 different hosts (server and workstation). The server does not have a display, the workstation has. I want to start programs on the server via workstation. These programs have a gui interface and if I shutdown the workstation and restart it at a later point in time I want to connect to the already running program, respectively gui. -- Thanks for any help! Problem with KDE Print

Dear Listmembers, I have a newly installed SuSE 9.2 with KDE 3.4.0 on my laptop. I want to print over a CUPS Server. The server is correctly installed vz. It works seamlessly with another laptop. However on my machine, when I click menu -> print system -> print manager, nothing happens. In Konqueror, klicking on services -> print system browser -> print manager, the print manager remains empty, i.e. no PDF, Fax, Printer. Any ideas ? Thanks a lot !

How override password for printer?

I stopped printing a long run by shutting off my Deskjet960c by pushing the start buttion on my printer. It was OK to do this on winxp but I guess not on linux-suse. I am running SuSE Pro 9.2 with just the basic (first time) updates. The result of shutting off the printer the way I did, was to put the print job as "queued". When I click on the print icon on desktop and get KJobViewer it shows the print job as queued and then I clicked "remove". And the result of that is the printer is turned off, And I cannot get it back on. I try fix it by start button (bad word)-> utilities -> printing ->printing manager -> and on Configure Printing Manager I click the column to right of "add" named "printer" and on the drop down menu click on the first item "start/stop printer" then click "start printer". Then I get the Authorization Dialog to enter user name and password. I have tried every combination of user names I have ever used (two) and every password I have ever used (three) and none work. Each time I get the message: Authorization KDE Daemon, authorization failed. After several tries I get the Error message: "Error - KDE control module: unable to modify the state of printer deskjet 960c. Error message received from manager. You are not authorized to access the requested source." I must restart computer to be able to try again. I have repeated this process several times. Short of re-installation, is there any way to remove that user name and password? Is there a "correct" way to turn off the printer when you don't want a long print run to continue? Hi! In my suse 9.2 i can't hear any mp3 or wma file.... The cd audio work fine. I have checked the soundcard and it works (for te time being plays all the kde sounds perfectly)... Xmms,amarok,noatun can't play the file.. I need to install my SuSE Pro 9.2 HOME files on a separate partition so I can install a clean from the box Pro 9.3 without affecting my data files. I messed up again and re-installed 9.2, but somehow it got installed (I think) on /dev/hdb6. The old 9.2 install was on /dev/hda3 but I *think* I lost my data files. 1. How can I look in /dev/hda3 to see if my documents and saved mail is there? 2. If it IS there, how should I backup that data and then reinstall on a separate HOME partition, that would be accessable to both 9.2 and 9.3? When I re-install 9.2 I think I better reformat /dev/hda except for XP which is on /dev/hda1. Agree? 3. If it is NOT there. how should I make the re-install of 9.2 put the HOME files into a separate partition? My utterly messed up drives follow. I have absolutely no idea how /dev/hdb got the way it is. Login screen background picture

I just upgraded to KDE 3.4 via apt. Upon restarting X, my background picture changed to the KDE default. No matter what I try, I can't change it. I can change everything else about the login screen, but not the background picture. Any ideas? Also, how do I get rid of the window section which shows the syslog? Thanks in advance.
