KDE 3.2.x - screen freeze / update

Hello list, just to recall the item: SuSE 8.1, KDE 3.2..x: when logging out, I get a screen freeze. As somebody noted on the list, this happens on SuSE 8.2 as well (do not know, whether 9.0 is concerned as well). I got some useful hints, such as from Mario: ---start quote To prevent this problem at logout, add TerminateServer=false in the [X-*-Core] section of /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc. ---end quote However, this is not helping at all, it is definitely not a driver/XFree problem. What is really happening: -> change in the control center some settings concerning colours, background or whatever. -> log out -> screen freeze / crash If i am logged in as root, my root reiserfs partition is corrupted, and if I am logged in as user, the user reiserfs partition is corrupted due to the necessary reset ! As long as you do not to change any settings, the screen frees does not show up. It seems (with my limited knowledge) that KDE is trying to write some configuration files at logout which makes the system going out for lunch. I am interested in your ideas... Regards, Udo

Qt [latest] upgrade and celestia

Hi! I'm using SL9 with kde from supplementary. After latest Qt upgrade (29-04), celestia no longer works: Unable to resolve GL/GLX symbols - please check your GL library installation. celestia: ERROR: Communication problem with celestia, it probably crashed. I re-installed nvidia 5336, but same problem I recompiled celestia, this time without kde support (glut only), and it worked flawlessly! So.. I think that this have something to do with this latest upgrade... BTW: I also tried celestia from SL9 CD5, but same problem (it used to work days ago). Shut down

Hi all. In my PC I installed windows 98 and SuSE 8.2. In the beginig when I want to shut down the computer in Linux the system shut down the computer without any problem. In the past week the Windows has problem (as usually) and I have to re-installed again and fix the GRUB in order to wake up the PC in Linux mode. Now when I wnat to shut down the machine in Linux it umount everything (as always) but don't shut down the machine. How can I fix that? No battery control applet after upgrade to 3.2.2 & other bugs

Hi, as per subject, i have no more the battery control applet after the upgrade. Also, the K menu has the same bug of the firs 3.2.1 builds, i.e. the sub menus are detached from the main menu. Non "open new session" in the menu, indeed. Any Suggestion?

Hi, I've just upgraded the stock KDE from SuSE 9.0 to KDE 3.2.1 provided by SuSE. There's a small problem though: I can't seem to find Kmail/Kontact ;-) And I badly need it! I've downloaded all the packages from SuSE server and installed most of them (all but the sources). Keyboards, mice & KDE

Hi all, I have a user with an interesting KDE problem I've never seen before. The mouse is an optical MS Intellimouse and keyboard standard win keyboard. The problem is that anytime you press & hold any key on the keyboard, the mouse pointer/cursor goes wanky, while in KDE 3.1.5. Otherwise, the mouse works without problems, totally normal. All settings appear to be correct both using Sax2 and YaST2 for selecting the mouse & keyboard. Thoughts, tips, suggestions? LDAP configuration for KAdressbook to Windows AD?

What do I need to do in order to get LDAP queries from KAdressbook to a Windows AD server to work? (I know next to nothing about LDAP. By searching the web I've gathered that it should be possible. I found quite a few "yes, Ive done it" but no explanations how.) I gather I might both need to do some configuration on the Windows server and in KAddressbook. Possible dumb kde 3.3 question?

Hi I tested a KDE 3.3 upgrade on my Suse 8.2 using the official packages and was suprised to get the following: error: failed dependencies: libraw1394.so.5 is needed by kdebase3-3.2.1-10 kdebase3-SuSE <= 9.0 conflicts with kdebase3-3.2.1-10 libexif.so.9 is needed by digikam-0.6.0-86 libFLAC++.so.2 is needed by k3b-0.11.6-8 libFLAC.so.4 is needed by k3b-0.11.6-8 libid3-3.8.so.2 is needed by k3b-0.11.6-8 libfribidi.so.0 is needed by kdegraphics3-3.2.1-11 libexif.so.9 is needed by kdegraphics3-kamera-3.2.1-11 libgnokii.so is needed by kdepim3-3.2.1-9 tidy is needed by quanta-3.2.0-37 This is after I have done a full security update, and loading the qt and libs rpm. How do I find the rpm's which will have the right dependancies for the above? Looking at the base dependancy am I really asked to system update to Suse 9? More importantly...have I done something wrong? Berni

update auf 3.2.2 Konqueror öffnet für jeden Ordner/Datei neues Fenster

Hallo, habe 3.2.2 auf SuSE 9.0 laufen. Seit dem update öffnet Konqui immer ein neues Fenster wenn ich eine Datei oder ein Verzeichnis anklicke. Obwohl ich kein Häkchen bei immer neues Fenster für Verzeichnis öffnen habe und neue links/Dateien in Unterfenstern öffnen eingestellt habe. Bis 3.2.1 klappte es einwandfrei. Ausserdem stellt er in den neuen Fenstern meine Ansicht immer auf Icons um, obwohl ich liste voreingestellt habe. Kennt jemand das Problem? Gibt es Abhilfe? Oder muß ich nen Bugreport schreiben? How to change the size of the taskbar

Hallo, is it possible to change the size of the window buttons displayed by the taskbar or the external taskbar? The buttons are always the same size, no matter if I set the size of the kicker to small, normal or big. They're only arranged in a different number of lines eg. one, two or three. Any ideas? I've done some digging online and now know that your SS 5100 is operating as a simple bridge. You've said you can surf using the SuSE client but not access email. The next obvious important questions are: Can you surf at the same time from all three clients? If so, the router's dhcp server is working *and* each client is correctly using it's dynamically assigned ip address -- that would be a good thing! Also, is email functioning on either of the other two clients? Let me know what you find... Multiple KDE installations

Hi, I have drawn a blank on this one in google and the KDE website..so please venerable sirs and sir'ess I would value a pointer or two. I have a main system with kde 3.1 that came with suse 8.2 and a laptop with exactly the same and use NFS to give the same desktop and home directory. The next step is to fully evaluate kde 3.2 on my laptop before upgrading the main system ...how best to aproach this please? Can I just upgrade my laptop without risking my 3.1 system settings and still have the same desktop and home directory? Thanks, Berni

Newbie Question

I just decided to give Linux, SuSe 9.0 Personal, a try and possibly quit paying homage to Bill. So far I like it but there seems to be a small problem. Problem is that I can't get KMail to hook up to my mail server. It doesn't seem to be able to find the servers. The settings that I use with Outlook [ Office 200 Pro ] and Outlook express are: Incoming - pop.swbell.yahoo.com - Port 110 Outgoing - smtp.sbc.yahoo.com - Port 25 - Authentication Required In case you didn't figure it out we are using SBC/Yahoo DSL with a router feeding three computers.. KDE seems to be fine with connection and surfing, once I found the IP Redirecting switch. *<[:o) All the other applications that use the web seem to be working just fine. Just can't download, or send mail, with KMail I've tried just about every switch I can find in all the different setup places I can find. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thumbnail view gone after ungraceful shutdown

All, Where should I be looking to restore the thumbnail previews in Konq for .jpg and other image files? Previously, I was able to view folders of images and see each file represented by a small version of the full image. This required some system resources, but allowed me to quickly browse large numbers of images and to select among similar and similarly named files, without opening each one, to see what was in it. Then my system (SuSE 9, KDE 3.2.0) froze and my wife had to reboot (could not get to a console for orderly shutdown). Upon restart, there was some corruption and a prompt telling me to log in as root and run "mount -n -o remount,rw /" ...... which I did. KDE came back, and most things seem to work, but now Konqueror shows image files all with the same (uninformative) camera icon. I've toggled every switch I could find in "Settings", but I can't get Konq to show image files as large-icon thumbnails anymore. What should I try next? Is there additional info that I could provide that might indicate what is broken? Thanks, /kevin

After installation of gnome no more sound on kde

Hello list, I've problem with the sound on my KDE desktop which has arised after the installation of the gnome package. First of all. I am using SuSE Linux 9.0, and KDE and gnome from this distribution. After the installation of the gnome package I've first noticed that the login.wav hasn't been played during login to KDE. Furthermore I have no bell sound in the kvt terminals and other KDE applications. Opening xterm, bell sound appears again, as well as in Xemacs. As a second step I went to the KDE control center, where I found that everything as it should be. The sound server should be started, when KDE starts. I've achieved to get thesystem bell to be played again, by setting under sound->system bell in the control center "use system bell..." to true. But whenever I want to get a "*.wav" dataset to be played in sound->system notification, I her nothing :-( Does anyone have an idea? Thank's in advance! Alexander

Adding Gnome Session To GUI Startup

Under KDE 3.1.x the Control Center had an option "System Administration -> Sessions -> Session Type", where session types could be added or removed. User Cannot Access Control Center

I have a box with SuSE 8.0 + KDE 3.1.2 installed. Root & 2 users can access Control Center normally, but a 3rd user opens a blank (except for welcome screen) Control Center. Then you misunderstood the question. The question was to start a new X session with the kdm login manager _without_ using kde. Indeed the questionaire is using fluxbox instead of kde. The number of simultaneous sessions is not limited by the number of processors, but by the amount of free RAM. So for the list a compendium of all the info we got so far: You can start another session with another Windowmanager by opening up a terminal (konsole, xterm etc) and type WINDOWMANAGER="<windowmanager>" startx -- :<VT> Where <windowmanager> can be kde, gnome, fluxbox, blackbox, fvwm, fvwm2, etc. pp. depending on what you have installed. <VT> can be a number bigger than 0. You can switch between the sessions with [CTRL]-[ALT]-F7, F8, F9, etc So you can start up the sessions with this methos and choose the Windowmanager. But you can not fire up kdm (or gdm or xdm or any other login manager) to let another user log in with his username and password. So your description of how to start a new session _when using KDE at the moment_ is absolutely helpless, because this is what the quesionaire was knowing already and wanted to copy with _another_ windowmanager. kde doesn't start - destroyed .kde

Yesterday I switched on my laptop (SuSE 9.0), all as usual, KDE started to about 90 percent and froze suddenly. There was no other possibility than switching the laptop off using the power-off-switch. This was the first time KDE froze in that way. After that I wanted to start my laptop again, I put in my password and pressed return. A popup window told me that the DCOPserver did not run and I have to start it before. Then I looked into my home directory using mc and was rather surprised: ?.kde │ 0│ 01. Jan 1970 ?.kde.save │ 0│ 01. Jan 1970 The same (size 0, Date 01. Jan 1970 and a ? in front of the name) was with the directories qt, skel, Desktop and Mail! There is no way to delete this files. All my Mails and kde-preferences are gone! It seems that "only" this files of this user are destroyed. I installed another user at the same laptop and kde started without problems. Does someone know a possibility to get the destroyed directories back? My last backup of this files was from the middle of march. Rudi

Hello everybody, I have some problems with the sound in KDE. I have a sound card for which there is an ALSA driver and it is loaded as a module with the 2.6.4 kernel. The mixer settings are alright, the sound in unmuted. Once I start KDE I can only hear a very low volume sound though -- and for that I have to pump up the volume of my speakers -- no matter what application I use. This problem does not reproduce if I use IceWM -- however it does appear if I, for instance, start KDE, close it and then start IceWM. So the only way to actually have sound is to start IceWM as the first session and stick with it. I have had this problem before, and it was solved by installing some mysterious SDL library package. Now it doesn't work though... (the problem surfaced once I did one of the regular "apt-get upgrade"s) I would appreciate any help... Thank you in advance! Dumitru Erhan

Can't select PGP key using OpenGPG and KMail on SuSE 9.0

Hi, My problem is that the "Your OpenGPG key" dialog box showing my PGP key won't allow me to select it. That is, I can change the background color of the entry in the list by moving the cursor over the entry and clicking the mouse button, but the OK button stays grayed. I have searched the net for answers, and while I found someone who had the same problem, his solution (disabling the default key in ~/.gnupg/ gpg.conf) did not work (it was already disabled). I have tried to disable gpg-agent in gpg.conf. I have tried to enable the default key in gpg.conf, using my key as the default value. None of these actions have resulted in success. Using gpg from the command line, I can verify that both the public and private keys exist. The public key is trusted with u/u (I generated it on this machine today). The pub/sec key ID is shown in the dialog box, but not the sub/ssb key ID. I have not tried to encrypt a message yet. The installation is only a few weeks old, and performed via FTP. KMail is version 1.5.4, KDE is 3.1.4, and gpg is 1.2.2. Any help is greatlyt appreciated. Carsten -- ====================================================================== Carsten P. Desktop sharing

How can I get vncserver to start automatically? I turn on Desktop Sharing with 'Allow uninvited connections', but cannot access unless I go to a command line and do 'vncserver'. -- Robert
