Hi Billie, Note: Please use the list email address and *not* personal email addresses when replying. You have to manually edit the To: field before clicking 'Send.' I (usually) do this immediately upon clicking 'Reply' so I don't forget to edit it later. Also, delete any second email address that may appear in the cc: field (...unless you're purposely copying someone not subscribed to the list.) These procedures keep threads in order, if not coherent, for posterity ;-) They also conserve packets and keep your recipient's inbox neat. ;-) Ok, on to our topic... Thanks for the hw clarification. I've done some digging online and now know that your SS 5100 is operating as a simple bridge. You've said you can surf using the SuSE client but not access email. This says the link between the SS 5100 and your router is ok. It also means the link to your isp is ok. Dull, I know, but we're narrowing the field of potential problems... The next obvious important questions are: Can you surf at the same time from all three clients? If so, the router's dhcp server is working *and* each client is correctly using it's dynamically assigned ip address -- that would be a good thing! Also, is email functioning on either of the other two clients? Let me know what you find... Finally, would you please clarify if your router is acting as a switch/hub, also, or do you have a separate switch/hub connecting your clients to the router? regards, - Carl - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - C. We are each connected directly to the router, three computers. The other two are still running Windows and work just fine. All can surf at the same time with no problems. If I reboot back to Windows, Outlook [ Office 2000 Pro ] doesn't have any problem whatsoever connecting and downloading mail with the settings I sent in the first of this thread: pop.swbell.yahoo.com - Port 110 smtp.sbc.yahoo.com - Port 25 - Authentification Required So I know the settings are right to reach my mail server. I kind of feel like there is something in the settings that I am missing. I can use Konqueror to read my mail online with no problems. It's like KMail is sending something eronneous or not looking in the right place for something. Maybe Yahoo is just mad at KMail *<[:oD or at my computer. I don't know if I eversent the actual error messages or not.I was getting different ones but lately it seems to have settled on these: Incoming - "Could not connect to host pop.swbell.yahoo.com" Outgoing - "Sending failed: Unknown host smtp.sbc.yahoo.com The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder. Note: Other messages will also be blocked by this message, as long as it is in the 'outbox' folder The following transport protocol was used: Outgoing" Maybe that gives a clue. I dunno. ===== (o:]>*HUGGLES*<[:o) Billie Waslh The three best words in the English Language: "I LOVE YOU" Pass them on !

Billie, this looks like an authentication problem. You might try reentering your password. Rich

I have a big problem with transposing characters. It bugs me that I can't see what I'm typing. Under security have you tried clicking on (check what server supports)? And did you get any error messages? Would it be a big problem for you to uninstall and reinstall KMail? It might be worth trying. I've used KMail for several years and with Yahoo for over a year so I know it works great. See you. Rich

Billie, I guess I should have asked you to clarify your setup, first, last night. If the only thing different on the one misbehaving system is the new OS you've installed, obviously it is a configuration issue. BTW, I did verify the SS5100 is operating as a bridge only... no routing or DHCP, etc. Try the following. Note: This assumes your client systems are being configured by the router via DHCP... Yast > Network Devices > Network Card Click Change in lower panel for already configured devices. The overview should show - Device = eth0 - Type = Ethernet - IP Address = DHCP Click Edit. Network address setup should show: - Network device = eth0 - "Automatic address setup (via DHCP)" should be selected. - The DHCP assigned IP address should be displayed in read-only mode IF this is how it was configured previously. - (example: 192.168.1.47) - The Subnet mask should be displayed in read-only mode IF this is how it was configured previously. - (example: 255.255.255.0) Click Host name and name server, then Click Accept if you get a pop-up: - Change host name via DHCP should NOT be selected. *- NS1 & Domain Search 1 should display as read-only* *- NS2 & Domain Search 2 should display as read-only* *If these entries don't match the settings on the W32 machines, click "Back", re-click the 'Host name and name server' button, but click 'Modify' at the pop-up. You can then change these settings to what is needed. If you want your changes to 'stick', un-select the "Update name servers and search list via DHCP" check-box, which is below these settings. Click OK when done. Click Routing. - Default gateway should be set per the router instructions (example: 192.168.1.1) - Enable IP forwarding should NOT be checked unless the machine being configured is functioning as a router for other systems in the network. Click OK Click DHCP Client Options: - Request Broadcast Response does NOT need to be checked - DHCP Client Identifier can be left blank or give the machine a unique name. - Host name to send can/should be set to "AUTO" Click OK Click Hardware Details. Manual network card configuration should display: - Network device = eth0 - kernel module (driver) being called & any parameters being passed. Click OK Click Next Click Finish YaST should re-write the config files & re-establish the network connection. So much for the harware side. I have an idea on the KMail side, too. You should make sure you're selecting 'requires authentication' for both incoming and outgoing servers. You can't send mail via smtp without using your login & password, likewise downloading your mail via pop. However, try using a fully qualified user name in the login field, as follows: username@domain.com <-- (fully qualified = same as email address) If none of this works, I'm afraid I'm out of suggestions for today. It's kind of difficult troubleshooting this kind of problem remotely -- without the hands-on visual & timing clues. Hope this helps! Billie, Another thought. Go to one of the W32 systems, open up a DOS window and type "ipconfig" and hit <enter> ->Does the info there match what is configured in the SuSE box? (obviously the last octet in the DHCP-assigned IP address with be different from client to client.) Pay attention to default gateway for below... ->Also, if your instincts are telling you KMail can't find the servers, maybe you *do* have a routing problem. Have you visited the web-based configuration interface in the router, itself? I don't know if it's got one, but if it does you can verify settings & status for each client there. In the web based setup all I can find for my computer is the IP address of the computer assigned by the router. It seems that I saw something somewhere in the configuration for a default gateway, can't say I remember where it was but.............. Found it, Currently the Yast Default Gateway is 198.168.1.1 but the router shows a default gateway of 64.217.25.254. Another thought was that possibly KMail is triggering the Firewall some way and needs to have an Application Gateway set. By the way I turned off the SuSe Firewall. ===== (o:]>*HUGGLES*<[:o) Billie Waslh The three best words in the English Language: "I LOVE YOU" Pass them on !

Hi Billie, "W32" is short-hand for Windows 32-bit " Start>Programs>MS-DOS... type ipconfig to dispay current machine IP settings. type exit and hit <return> when done to close the DOS window Have you corrected your pop & smtp email server entries? Is KMail working now? I thought you'd already compared these settings against the other systems... - Carl - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - C. E. This indicates that the address is incorrect and can not be resolved. I tried pinging the server but could not resolve the address either. So, I checked your ISP and the SMTP setting for your email address memberID@swbell.net should be smtp.swbell.yahoo.com. There is also an SMTP server smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com, both servers resolve for me and reply to ping. James Irving
Changed the URL and this is what came back: Sending failed: Could not connect to host smtp.swbell.yahoo.com The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder. Note: Other messages will also be blocked by this message, as long as it is in the 'outbox' folder The following transport protocol was used: Outgoing That address will not work with Outlook or Outlook Express either. I have found that smtp.sbc.yahoo.com is the only one that will work for either in sending. Conversly pop.sbc.yahoo.com won't work in either of the other two mail programs for receiving. It has to be pop.swbell.yahoo.com. When SWBell, and all the other baby bells, merged into SBC they sent a message that the mail servers should contain sbc rather than swbell. Before that it was pop.swbell.net. Then when they joined forces with Yahoo the mail address changed again to add the Yahoo server. Things have been screwed up ever since. ===== (o:]>*HUGGLES*<[:o) Billie Waslh The three best words in the English Language: "I LOVE YOU" Pass them on !
