stopping automatic backup file creation

Whenever I edit and then save a file, an automatic backup of it is made in the same location with a tilde added to the end of the filename, e.g. editing filename.txt and saving creates filename.txt~ Can anyone tell me what is doing this and how to disable it? Thanks Chris

folder-specific view settings?

Not sure whether this has already been asked and answered -- I couldn't find it in the archives. I have kde 3.2.2 with SuSE 8.2. Is it possible to configure the view settings (whether hidden files are visible, how the files are sorted, the background color, etc.) on a per-folder basis? The first thing that occurs to me is this: for each folder for which I want a unique configuration, create a separate view profile for that folder, go to "configure view profiles...", and check the "Save URL in profile" box so that that folder/directory is associated with a unique view profile. But (assuming that that even works) is there a simpler way? With Mac OS X, for example, the folder view settings popup menu includes a button to check, indicating whether you want the settings to apply to all windows or only to that specific window. Thanks

Hi i have suse 9.1 . I want to upgrade kde 3.2 to kde 3.3 I have started downloading the packages from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1 How i can upgrade my kde? Osho - out of coincidence I found a post on another list where you replied DisplaySize 271 203 ...for 1024x768. Just changed it and my fonts/dialog boxes look much nicer! Thanks for the tips. Still wish I understood how this was calculated. Found some info on the net that you devide the horizontal / vertical values (i.e. divide 768 by 203(converted to inches)) to get dpi. Not sure if that's right or not. > Got it! OK, I never was any good at math... ;) So what would I use for 1024x768 ?

Got it! OK, I never was any good at math... ;) So what would I use for 1024x768 ? Thanks > For other resolutions, just change 420x315 in a proportional manner.

I am struggling with these settings on my X31 which has a 12.1" lcd. I noticed that if I enter in the exact dimensions (as measured with a ruler) of the lcd, most of the kde dialog boxes need to be dragged larger in order to see the text/buttons within. I ended up putting in the size of a 15" lcd and it looks perfect (can't recall the size off the top of my head) Anyway, the only side effect is it made all of the fonts extremely tiny. I suppose I could just use a larger font size? Would you recommend your suggested settings below for any size lcd? --Thanks! > Add DisplaySize 420 315 in your X configuration file (typically XF86Config-4)

Hi, last week I bought a new monitor and up to know I do not get a satisfactory display with fonts. Apart from that, the monitor is great. I have SuSE linux 9.0 with KDE 3.1.4. My monitor is an EIZO L985EX with 1600x1200 Pixels @ 60 Hz (DVI). My graphics card is Matrox G450-23c3, if that matters. With KDE I use the "standard" fonts Sans and Nimbus Sans L with sizes 12pt and 13pt respectively. If I switch off Anti-Aliasing, the letters look really ugly. If I switch it on, they are heavily blurred. I have tried Sub-Pixel-Hinting of all four kinds. The best result was archived with vertical RGB, but the letters are still blurred to much. They have blue (or green) and read (or orange) shadows below and above horizontal lines. I tried other fonts. Some have the same problem, others do not at all. The latter are realy black and sharp with no shadow at all. I do not understand, why only some fonts have this problem. On the other hand, letters of fonts that do not have this problem, are not easy to read for other reasons, so I would like to stay with Sans and Nimbus Sans L. What can I do (if anythig?). By the way: In trying out other fonts with some applications, I got another problem: With terminals (the console) the default font was Sans / Nimbus Sans L by default. I can change the font, but then I cannot set it back to Sans. The font is not offered! Other applications, e.g. Konqueror, do offer Nimbus Sans L to switch back to. How can I do the same with the console? Thanks in advance for any help, Andreas.

HELP: How to reset konqueror configuration without removing entirely .kde directory

Dear all, after my latest upgrade to KDE 3.3 on SuSE 9.0 (via red-carpet) Konqueror has a serious problem: whenever I'm accessing to a web site, it stops responding, Linux it is starting to access to my disk very intensively and in less than a minute the whole PC is stop responding (even if it continues to read from the disk) and I have to switch off the PC manually (Nor CTR-ALT-BACKSPACE, nor CTR-ALT-DEL work anymore). This is happening with very simple web site like google: when I do a search and later I try to modify it, the problem happens. I investigated a bit more and I found out that konqueror crashes only under a specific user account account. If from that account i just run the command "sux -c 'konqueror' - otheruser". Konqueror works perfectly. For this reason I now think that the issue is related to something in the .kde directory.. am I right? How can I cancel the Konqueror configuration only without removing the whole .kde directory? What exactly shall I cancell? The reason I don't want to remove the .kde directory is that I don't want to lose my kwallet passwords, the KDE menus & configuration, file associations, etc. Can you help me? Thanks a lot & regards, Timur ADDITIONAL INFO ON MY BUG for those interested in: By using top I realize that the freeze is related to a swap file filling process which doesn't stop even if I exit from KDE. Hi! what's the default location (path) for the kdm config file kdmrc? In earlier versions of KDE I had one (the default file) in /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm, and my customizations ended up in another kdmrc file located in /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm. This file seemed to override the settings in the default file. Since upgrading to kde 3.3 my customization has vanished, and after digging a lot I found that kdm and the kdm config page in kcontrol seem to ignore /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc, and only read and WRITE /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc instead. If I copy kdmrc from /etc to /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm I have my customization back. I find it somewhat disturbing that configuration files in the installation tree /opt/kde3 are modified by kcontrol. These files should remain untouched, and all configuration changes should be stored somewhere below /etc, because that's the correct location for the system config. Can this be configured back to the old behaviour? Mario
