YaST does not recognise new package

I have pointed my YaST installation source to a http mirror of the SuSE directories (in fact to http://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for _8.1/yast-source) as the first choice for downloads, and then my installation DVD. That did the job of upgrading to 3.1 and later to 3.1.1. I now wanted to upgrade to security release 3.1.1a, and while the mirror seems to have updated everything fine over the weekend, YaST does not recognise the new packages. Has anyone similar problems at the moment? I have noticed that http://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_8.1/yas… packages.DU and packages.en are still dated from 27 March (the 3.1.1 release). This could be the reason? Kostas

KDE 3.1 on SuSE 8.1 kicker problem

Almost everything works fine, but there is one very annoying thing: When I start a KDE applet, it doesn't start, the space in the control bar is only reserved and filled with grey. After a reboot, the application does normally start. It is completely independant which applet I start, it always only works after a reboot (or at least a KDE reset, I think). On the other side, applications that run in the Ksystray are also not shown, even not after a reboot (obviously because they are not started again). What can I do to fix these issues? SuSE8.1/compaq/graphics problem

Hello list, I'm starting a local Linux Group here and we have the opportunity of using a computer class for our Linux learning. At the moment most of the teaching comes from me. The computers in the class are causing numerous problems. Being Compaq machines they have some weird ACPI BIOS incompatibility which can be solved with boot parameter (we put acpi=off there). Worse yet, the graphical display seems to fail after a short while with (at least almost) all of the computers. I can provide details of the hardware a bit later but perhaps somebody out there recognizes this: 1) login to KDE or twm (probably others too) 2) launch konqueror and try to enter an URL to go => screen is filled with narrow vertical stripes, different colors and nothing sensible is showing neither mouse nor keyboard seem to answer/get control of it (including CTRL-ALT-F1 and CTRL-ALT-DEL) (it will fail without konqueror too, it seems) 3) reboot (disk probably gets fixed) and it seems to be ok again. Graphic chip is intel8xx something and based on the same behaviour happening on both KDE and twm I would guess this is not KDE problem but XFree86/driver or similar problem. I might get the hardware details and they are likely to help. All these computers are CompaQ, some not-too-new model, 64MB or 128MB ram, CD-ROM, network card and harddisk - nothing more special I/O. Most of the machines are same hardware and most of them did this yesterday - not all of the students tried X but I'd guess that all that tried faced the problem. does this ring a bell? These systems run NT4 normally (from different harddisk) so they should be working quite OK on the hardware side. I'll find out the hardware and XFree86 log information ASAP if this does not get solved faster. regards, timo

Hallo Liste, Habe SuSE 8.0 neu installiert. Kinternet ist mit 'Stecker'-Icon im Taskbar präsent. Dial-on-Demand will noch nicht. Wo muss ich nachsehen, damit DoD auch funktioniert? Z.Zt. geht's noch mit "isdnctrl dial ippp0"; mit DoD wär's schöner. Gruss, Roland

Upgraded 3.0 to 3.1 at my first attempt and well impressed with all the changes - now a definite Linux convert. However one or two rpm's would not upgrade and so I -i(nstalled) --replacefiles which doesnt seem to have caused any problems - ie everything works so far. Now though I appear to have kdebase3.1.1 but also 3.0.5 on the system according to Kpackage? Can I safely uninstall 3.0.5, should I upgrade 3.1 again or should I leave well alone? Jim

KMail and Samba: Question about ~/Mail directories

Hello, I have one very strange request :) I mounted ~user/ on another local network computer via mount -t smbfs. I can see every file or directory in remote ~user/ directory EXCEPT Mail/ directory. It's empty, although it has the same privileges like all other directories. What is specific about KMail's Mail/ directory? Nikola
