KDE 3.1 on SuSE 8.1 kicker problem
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello list, I have just upgraded to KDE 3.1 (with the packages on LinuxUser 04/03, built particularly for SuSE 8.1). Almost everything works fine, but there is one very annoying thing: When I start a KDE applet, it doesn't start, the space in the control bar is only reserved and filled with grey. After a reboot, the application does normally start. It is completely independant which applet I start, it always only works after a reboot (or at least a KDE reset, I think). On the other side, applications that run in the Ksystray are also not shown, even not after a reboot (obviously because they are not started again). What can I do to fix these issues? Harald, When I upgrade to new versions of KDE whether they be whole numbers such as (3.0.3 --> 3.1.1) or just new builds of packages. I remove these files and let KDE recreate them. In /tmp rm -rf *<username> In your home directory do this. rm -rf .mcop* rm -rf ~/.kde/socket* rm -rf ~/.kde/tmp* Both the socket and tmp files are softlinks to things you already deleted in /tmp so they can be removed. Your going to need to restart KDM (GUI login) if you use it and recommend not being in X/KDE when you do this. So..do this which doesn't require a reboot ..9-10 times nothing gets fixed in Linux with a reboot. You only need to reboot if you change the kernel. Anyway..I digress. This is what you need to do. 1. log out of KDE 2. press "ctrl+alt+F2" which will bring you to a console login. 3. login as root and type this (without the quotes) "rcxdm stop" then delete the files above like I've layed out. You can then logout of tty2 and type "alt+F1" which will bring you to console 1 and you can log in as root and type "rcxdm start" which will bring your GUI login back up and all should be well. :) Cheers! -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I'll tell you what you should see.

I know this ;). But anyway, in a distribution like SuSE, you never know whether an extra daemon doesn't do things that you don't know from a distribution like Gentoo (also installed at my system).

Didn't help... The problems still occur. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE+maoTpy/Gjo6hsHYRArOYAJ9gH6RWiqYIwGJ/r6wBj/fYr9BwgwCfcNNb +aVBwcO7bD1Y9/jSL0XrIxQ= =CTgp -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
