Hi list, I consider myself new to Linux since i started using Linux in August of 2002. First i must point out to you the fact that my system has no upgrades or patches on it that fixes some bugs, this is because my system is not connected to the internet, and i see no reason to install those patches. After i installed the following packages of KDE 3.1: kdebase3 kdelibs3 qt3 qt3-non-mt And then rebooted the system to see how KDE 3.1 looks like, but when the system came at the point to schow me the login screen it just flashes a few times. Then goes back with this on it: Linux login: After i loged in i tryed to start KDE with this command: startkde But no luck, i get a message with a number of complaints. To me when i look at the message i can see only one problem, this is a part of the message: startkde: Could not startkdeinit.Check your installation. Error: Can't open display. Warning: connect ( ) failed: no such file or directory. startkde: Shutting down ... Warning: connect ( ) failed: no such file or directory. Error: Can't contact kdeinit ! To me it looks like a problem with kdeinit, as i sayed before this computer has no connection to the internet. To install KDE 3.1 i downloaded the packages on another computer and burnt them on a cd-rw, these packages i copieed to /home/xxx/Documents. And then installed them with YAST2 using the following command in Kconsole: yast -i /home/xxx/Documents/<package>.rpm When i had closed Kconsole i wanted to open it again, but there was a message saying something about kdeinit. I searched the list but could not find the sollution to my problem, i also searched on suse-linux-e without any luck. Who can help me with this ? What must i do to get KDE 3.1 up and running ? What package contains kdeinit ? System: SuSe Linux 8.0 Pro. Thanks in advance. Greetings, Walter Kerkhofs

All Thank you for all your suggestions. Unfortunately, none of them helped the situation. This was a new SuSE installation so I had not spent a lot of time configuring it so I am going to start again with a new installation. I will let you know how I get on. Thanks again Phil Harrison

Problem with gtk apps in kde

Hi, I am a newbie to linux and have recently installed SuSE 8.1. I run it with KDE. Now, some applications start with totally screwed windows and no fonts (but they start). Some examples are Gimp, Ethereal, Gqview, Grip. As far as I understand these are gtk+ applications, So I thought I might be missing the correct libraries. But in the Software Install section of YaST2 both gtk+ and glib are installed. Is there maybe a problem with the path? maybe with the fonts? Although I doubt the latter. Gimp starts with a window that is ca. 1 1/2 screens high and 1/8 screen wide. Any suggestions ? Kostas

KMail message conversion?

All, I opened KMail a few minutes ago, and glancing at my inbox I saw some new messages, including one from Daimler-Chrysler (I used to lease an Intrepid). I clicked on it to have a brief look, before deleting it. As soon as I clicked, the contents flashed for a moment in the message pane and then vanished. In the inbox list, the Subject, Sender and Date changed to "No Subject Unknown Unknown". I clicked on the message immediately below, and the same thing happened. I exited KMail and re-launched. The two messages still show "No Subject Unknown Unknown", and have no contents. Clicking on other messages, now, does not seem to cause the strange effect. Is this normal/expected behavior? /kevin

Hi Phil! Please reply to list. You surely agree, that the solution could be interesting for more people beside you, don't you? I think when you use the graphical link from your kde menue, then kde tries to start yast2 as a kcontrol module (like "kdesu kcmshell YaST/Misc/yast2" on my 7.3). With KDE 3.1 some things have changed here and I think that's not possible anymore. Please check on your system and change the properties of the link to execute "kdesu yast2". This should fix things. KGhostview zeigt manche PDF-Dateien nicht an

Hallo zusammen, schon unter KDE2 konnte ich mit kghostview PDF-Dateien, die ich von der Bundesversicherungsanstalt heruntergeladen habe, nicht anschauen. Die Fehlermeldung lautet: Öffnen der Datei <PDF-Datei> nicht möglich. Was kann die Ursache sein? NB.: Mit acroread kann ich alle anzeigen, aber manche mehrseitige nicht ausdrucken, obwohl ich mir Acrobat Reader 5 installiert habe. Bin für keden Rat dankbar! Gruß Thomas Michalka

Virtuelle Desktops nicht umschaltbar

Hallo zusammen, in KDE 3.1 hat sich offenbar die Nummerierungsreihenfolge der virtuellen Desktops, wie sie z.B. im klassischen Zweizeiler von kpager sichtbar werden, geändert. Bei mir sind es 12 Stück. KDE2: 1 3 5 7 9 11 2 4 6 8 10 12 KDE3: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 Bei mir ergibt z.B. "Desktop rauf/runter" einen Wechsel zwischen 1 und 2, so wie das unter KDE2 auch richtig war. Entweder ist der kpager schon auf die "neue", aber falsche Reihenfolge, umgestellt, obwohl das Mapping der Tastenkürzel auf die Nummern sich gar nicht ändern sollte, oder das Mapping der Konfiguration der Tastenkürzel "Desktop rauf", "Desktop runter", "Desktop links", "Desktop rechts" auf die neue Nummerierungsreihenfolge wurde schlicht und einfach vergessen. Kennt jemand einen Workaround, so daß man dennoch mittels Tastatur den Desktop schnell wechseln kann? Schöne Grüße Thomas Michalka

Dämonischer Druck in KDE 3.1?

Hallo liebe "Liste-ner", als ich gerade über kprinter drucken will, bekomme ich die Fehlermeldung, daß der kdeprintd nicht läuft. Ich denke, daß ich da sicher was zu konfigurieren vergessen habe, aber im Kontrollzentrum/Druckerkonfiguration finde ich nichts, was ich weiter konfigurieren könnte. Außerdem meine ich doch, daß irgendwelche Druckdämonen beim KDE-Start automatisch gestartet werden müßten, oder? Folgende locate-Ausgaben erhalte ich: $> locate kdeprintd /opt/kde2/lib/kde2/libkded_kdeprintd.la /opt/kde2/lib/kde2/libkded_kdeprintd.so /opt/kde2/share/services/kded/kdeprintd.desktop /opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kded_kdeprintd.la /opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kded_kdeprintd.so /opt/kde3/share/services/kded/kdeprintd.desktop kdeprintd unter kde3 ist also installiert, was nu? Folgende Ausgabe habe ich veranlaßt, weil eine Fehlermeldung kam, als ich nach der Auswahl der Druckerkonfiguration in den Systemverwaltungsmodus wechseln wollte: kdeprint_lpd.la konnte nicht gefunden werden - gibt's bei mir unter kde3 auch nicht, wie man sieht: $> locate kdeprint_lpd.la /opt/kde2/lib/kde2/libkdeprint_lpd.la Die Frage ist, wo bekommt man diese Library für KDE 3.1 her? Jetzt habe ich doch noch was zum Konfigurieren gefunden (warum das allerdings nötig sein soll, verstehe ich nicht, denn mein Drucker und der CUPS-Server ist schon seit SuSE 7.3 eingerichtet und funktioniert ja auch), nämlich unter + Angeschlossene Geräte + Drucker --> ausgewählt LaserJet6P + Reiter "Eigenschaften" Wenn ich da den Treiber einstellen möchte, bekomme ich ieder diese Meldung über den fehlenden kdprintd. Das schein also das zentrale Problem zu sein. Nur, wer startet diesen normalerweise, oder wie kann ich das selber erreichen? Für jedwede Hilfe bin ich sehr dankbar! Viele Grüße, Thomas Michalka

different openmotif-versions in KDE3.1

Hi All, I've installed KDE 3.1 on SuSE 8.1 and it works just fine. The only problem I have is that a program I have to use requires openmotif2.1.30MLI4-288. But KDE 3.1 comes with openmotif-2.2.2-111 which causes my program to fail. The later version is required by some kdebase-packages so I don't really want to uninstall it. Whenever I try to install the older version, yast shows me that the older version will be updated automatically to the newer version! Is there a way to keep the older version in parallel? Or can I force KDE to use the older version or is the new one substantial to kde 3.1? Thanks Matthias
