Hello I have installed Suse 8 on a Pentium 4 and I was not able to get vncserver working with KDE. Some days ago I needed to do some testes and I installed Vncserver on Celeron 700MHz and I got Vncserver with KDE working right at the first time that I tryied it. Has anyone got vncserver with KDE working on a Pentium 4 or AMD MP processores with Suse 8. Thanks

Cannot build QT 3.2.1

Hi, I tried to build QT 3.2.1 out of the source package. Make exits with an error in the install-section. My system: SuSE 8.1 with several SuSE-updates. The error occurres with qt3-3.2.1-23.src.rpm as well as with qt3-3.2.1-35.src.rpm. Here's the output of make: # rpm -bb --buildroot /tmp/qt3/ --target i586 qt3.spec ... file associations

hi to set up a workstation i need to change the file associations in kde globally for ALL users. i'm using SuSE 8.2 and i've found the mimetypes /opt/kde3/share/mimelnk but in these files the "links to the application" are not stored. does anybody know where these links that associate mime types and applications are stored such that i can change them globally in a SuSEconfig-compliant way? (SuSE 8.1 pro, xfree86 4.2.0, win4lin patched kernel 2.4.19-308) I use apt/synaptic for my updates. I used Synaptic to upgrade to 3.1.4 for suse 8.1 the other night, when I checked in the morning Synaptic had apparantly hung. I logged out and back in. At this point I recieved an error (in an x-window) "Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation." I clicked Okay and kde loaded as it should. I checked my ~/.xsession-errors and found the following... kdeinit: relocation error: /usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3: undefined symbol: FT_Seek_Stream startkde: Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation. Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory I checked /usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3 is where it should be kdeinit is in /opt/kde3/bin as expected so I copied all of the new files to a new dir and ran # rpm --replacepkgs -Uvh *.rpm in the directory, after awhile kde pretty much locked up. (no mouse or keyboard control) I reset the machine, then # init 3 # cd /dir/with/upgrade # rpm --replacepkgs -Uvh *.rpm recieved an error message I don't remember # rpm --rebuilddb # rpm --replacepkgs -Uvh *.rpm worked this time # /sbin/ldconfig # /sbin/SuSEconfig # reboot At this point I trust that all of the files (qt, kde 3.1.4 upgrades) have been installed properly but I still get the error message. It only happens at login (for all users, not just me) and everything else seems to be working as expected. I'd like to get rid of this error but at least things seem to work. Any Ideas? PS In regards to Richard Bos question, The packages you found are the same as those I find available in synaptic, I guess some haven't been updated yet. apt-get holds back 10 kde packages

Hello List, I wanted to upgrade to 3.1.4 with apt-get, but it wants to keep back 10(!) kde packages: kdeadmin3 kdeedu3 kdegames3 kdegraphics3 kdelibs3 kdelibs3-devel kdemultimedia3-devel kdepim3 kdetoys3 libwmf Since this includes some core packages, I aborted the upgrade. I assume there are dependencies from some packages I installed separately. Can I find out what packages are causing this? Maybe uninstalling those packages by hand, upgrading, and re-installing would help. Kostas

Environment: 8.2 Suse Professional i386 (athlon kernel-source-2.4.20.SuSE-100 ) KDE 3.1.4 from SuSE supplementary directory KDM RPM: kdebase3-kdm-3.1.4-34 /etc/passwd entry for root root:x:0:0:Konqi:/root:/bin/bash The name Konqi as root was added with a PNG file for KDM to display, cute little 64x64 pixel 3D dragon that he is. I have remote login and shutdown disabled via "Control Center->System Administration->Login Manager". System UID set to Below 0 and Above 65000. "unhidden with every hidden but root (before I had Below 500 and had "Selected only" which included "root"). Unable to login to root via KDM. Message is "root logins are not allowed".
