apt-get holds back 10 kde packages
Hello List, I wanted to upgrade to 3.1.4 with apt-get, but it wants to keep back 10(!) kde packages: kdeadmin3 kdeedu3 kdegames3 kdegraphics3 kdelibs3 kdelibs3-devel kdemultimedia3-devel kdepim3 kdetoys3 libwmf Since this includes some core packages, I aborted the upgrade. I assume there are dependencies from some packages I installed separately. Can I find out what packages are causing this? Maybe uninstalling those packages by hand, upgrading, and re-installing would help. Kostas

I had a similar problem. The cause for mine was qt-3.2.0b, instead of 3.2.1. Do you have the correct version there? HTH Markus -- The grass is always greener on the other side of your sunglasses.

Well, I still have 3.1.2, but one of the packages it proposes to update is qt3 (along with lots of other qt packages) so I assume that this cannot be the problem?

Yes. Try to install 1 of the hold back packages and see what apt reports: e.g.: apt-get -s install kdeadmin3 -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Try this: apt-get -s install kdeadmin3 kdelibs3-cups- (notice the "-" behind kdelibs3-cups) And check the output.

The simulator code in apt-get is not perfect that is what you see here. But the conclusion is that kdelibs3-cups is integrated in kdelibs3. As apt does not remove any packages without explicit permission from the user it holds back the involved packages. Just remove kdelibs3-cups manually or have it removed by apt and all will be find.... -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless
If I try to play a video file, say mpg or quicktime, by clicking on the file in konqueror, kmplayer starts and then gives an erro message (I have show console output on) that "it seems there is no xvideo support for your video card available" When I type from the command line mplayer 'filenae' the video plays perfectly. i have vo=xv in my ~/.mplayer/config file. I can't seem to tell where kmplayer is reading its configuration. Any hints on getting this working. I have been using apt for rpm to upgrade my kde files, and am currently running kde 3.1.4 on SuSE 8.2. kmplayer is 0.8-2 Mike -- Michael A. Sorry, a correction to what I have below. Mplayer does not run with vo=xv, but it runs with vo=x11. Seems like kmplayer is trying to run with vo=xv, despite the line vo=x11 in my mplayer config file. Thanks

Kmplayer uses its own config file. Set the driver in the kmplayer preferences. Charles -- "The IETF motto is 'rough consensus and running code'" -- Scott Bradner (Open Sources, 1999 O'Reilly and Associates)
