KDE 3.1 Problems and Help needed

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all: I have read through all the messages relating to Kde 3.1 install problems and I seem to remember some solutions to my problems, but seem to have gone blind reading the messages and have not found what I needed. Problem #1 I have lost the default SuSe background and taskbar icons. I seem to remember someone stating that it was a matter of copying some file. Could some one refresh my mind. Problem #2 Kmail is complaining when opening signed/encrypted mail. I have gnugp 1.2.1 installed and kmail options are to use it. Is there a solutions to this. Problem #3 When I try to install a new rpm, kpackage opens then ask for root password. Then errors with a message saying that the file or directory does not exist. KDE 3.1 on 8.1, yet again

Assuming that I ever get enough of KDE 3.1 onto my system, what needs to be changed in order for 3.1 to start, rather than 3.0.x?? Is it necessary to edit an X file (which one?) to point to a new version of kdm? Or is the apt-get update/upgrade process supposed to replace the earlier kdm with a newer version? I pointed at every repository that people have mentioned recently and told apt-get to get started. 18 hours later, it finished, with a summary that said (of 1100 packages...) the KDE3.1 packages had been "held back". So, I ran it again... and got some more additions (probably packages that had been added to repositories while my system was doing the big download), and still the KDE stuff was "held back". So, I got tired of that and fired up synaptic. Then I just kept pressing buttons until the program stopped complaining (i.e., fixing or removing broken packages), which eventually left the KDE3.1 stuff... and some more stray packages that had krept into the lists while I had been playing with synaptic. So, with no more complaints visible, I told synaptic to "Proceed". It did. A couple of hours later, it finished with an error message or two, but they did not seem to mention KDE3 packages specifically. So, I shut down and restarted. Old kdm came up. Hmm. I selected my normal login, selected "KDE" from the list, gave it my password and KDE... 3.0.x started. Well, it got as far as "Loading Desktop", and then just sat there. So, I opened a console ( [Ctrl][Alt][F1], went to run-level 3, went back to run-level 5, and started GNOME, instead. Gnome works fine, despite having had hundreds of its packages updated during the general assault. KDE does not. I even opened KMail in GNOME, and it worked. Where do I go from here? /kevin

probs w. screensaver

Hi out there, while updating KDE to 3.1 on my suse 7.3 I saw a lot of additional screensavers were installed. But the newer ones can't be run! I use the latest XFree from SuSE an xinerama. Is this a KDE or a user prob?! Chris -- Christoph Dohmen ChDohmen(a)gmx.de

Help Needed to restore Root Desktop

Probs w. Kmid / SB AWE

Hi, on the weekend I updated my KDE from 3.0.5 to 3.1 on my SuSE Linux 7.3. I am very amazed, that it is not possible to play midi-files wether in kmid nor in kmidi. The configuration-dialog does not present any selection! The hardware is still running, because I can play midi-files with playmidi! I use a Soundblaster AWE 32. And the read tells me to compile the sources by myself, if the rpm-package makes problems, because it's not compiled with AWE-support :-( I tried to compile the src-rpm package, but the resulting file was not able to deal with my soundcard, too! KDE3.1 Kmail hangs when when linking to url

On SuSE8.1 Kmail, if I click on a url in body of message a dialog comes up indicating that it is starting a browser but then no browser and Kmail hangs. I have tried it with and without a browser running with same results. Must kill the process to recover. Rarely it works but most often it hangs. Have been using Opera as my browser for years. Problem started on upgrade to 3.1 Any suggestions? TIA richard
