Small but annoying problem

I was wondering where the choices that show up when you right click on a file and go to "Open With" come from. I've got KWrite showing up twice as well as another application. I'd really like to have them there only once. I've cleaned up File Associations so that each app is only there once and checked root's file associations to be sure that the extra entry isn't coming from there. Any other file I should know about to edit? Thanks in advance for your help.

KOffice/KWord problem

Hi all, Here is a problem, I would like for you to put some thought into! I can't seem to start KWord now. All the other modules/parts work nicely, but not KWord. I can start KOffice, but if trying to open a kword doc, it fails. Here is the error from a konsole attempt: koffice (lib kofficecore): ERROR: Couldn't find the native MimeType in kword's desktop file. Check your installation ! I get this same problem from the orginal koffice files from the SuSE 9.0 and the newer updated 1.2.93 files. I have recompiled from src and do notice that the kofficecore is built correctly. I can start and operate KWord as root without problems, so it appears that the problem lies in my user account. Any thoughts? aRts and alsa (again)

Hi folks, some time ago there was a discussion about using aRts and ALSA in parallel in this list. The bottomline seemed to be that, as soon as one uses ALSA as backend for aRts (and/or selects 'autosuspend'), everything should be fine. Maybe I didn't get the point, but for me this doesn't work: As long as artsd is running (with or without autosuspend) all programs using an ALSA driver fail. Only when I terminate artsd, they suddenly work. Since a couple of programs can't use aRts (or - for whatever reason - it sounds horrible) it would be great if there were a posibility to use both, aRts _and_ ALSA (w/o aRts frontend). Any ideas? Updating KDE to 3.1.4 on SuSE Professional 8.0

I tried to install KDE 3.1.4 (the rpm's SuSE provides as the KDE update for 8.0 8 (why didn't they work? I'll never understand)) but the rpm to install first (which is qt3 3.2.3) already showed missing dependencies. Even if I try to start with qt3 3.0.5 I receive messages about missing libraries. Is there an installation instruction where I can go through and see exactly what I need on SuSE Professional 8.0 with KDE 3.0.5 to do the update or do I have to go through the whole mess on my own, figuring out every missing dependency and searching for every lib and rpm on the net? I'll tried to ignore all dependencies and force rpm to install KDE 3.1.4 on a VMware machine where I can easily rollback the installation. The result was (what I expected somehow) that some applications (like YaST2) didn't start anymore. Can someone provide help!! It would be very appreciated! starting a new browser tab in Konqueror

with Suse 9.0 on a newer, fast desktop system, I get the following message in the browser window when trying to open a new browser tab, during which time (for about 5 seconds) I can hear the hard drive looking for something: " An error occured while loading about:blank: Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: Error loading 'kio_about'." I have a home page specified which comes up on starting the program, but not on subsequent tabs. I also hear this same hard drive searching sound when I am first logging in at KDM and it says "checking system settings" while waiting way too long to complete that task also (40 seconds). I have a slow laptop runnig suse 9.0 and it doesn't exhibit either of these problems. Any ideas.

Check network traffic amount

Hi, is there an easy way to check how much traffic goes over my eth0 or wlan0 interface. I don't want a complicated tool, just a simple thing, saying e.g. Total traffic: 450MB download: 300MB upload: 150 MB Can't be that difficult, I suppose?!? Best regards alex.

The problem has to do with a kpart that is installed with SUSE called krpmview. If you rename or remove this file: /opt/kde3/share/apps/kthml/kpartplugins/krpmview.rc it will fix the problem. You will not be able to open rpm's in konqueror any longer, but nor will it crash any longer. I installed this beta as well, but ended up removing it. There are too many things that didn't work any longer once it was installed. Things like SuperKaramba no longer worked properly, and the SUSE Plugger would not load, nor would the update agent. It would be nice if there were a way to install the RPMS to a different directory instead of overwriting the old /opt/kde3 files. Does anyone know of a way to do this? Somebody knows how to avoid these? Hmm, I don't have an answer, but another question ;-) 1.) Did you install the rpm's with something like "--nodeps" or "--force"? You really shouldn't! If you did, the best would be (IMHO) do deinstall all the kde packages manually and reinstall them without these parameters (Just rpm -Uvh *.rpm). Then look at the dependencies, and solve them _all_. 2.) You could try to hide your .kde-directories. Rename them and restart kde afterwards. Same problem? I am using SuSE 8.2 with KDE3.2beta2, and it works fine here. There are still some bugs, but not the one described by you above. Looks like a dependency problem to me...
