Then, if you want, replace XF86 and new sax2 + saxident Then, add the KDE3-packages At last, change the configuration-files. -------------------------------------------------------- When you save the new packages on cdrom, you can install with yast1 via "source: none" and then the directory /media/cdrom/ (or what your /etc/fstab says; don't forget the last slash). Change all configuration-files at once. Make a backup before you change a file. Mounting Zip Drives

Folks, I have been lurking here almost from the beginning of the list. You are a great group. I realize this question is only peripherally related to KDE, but I hope you can help anyway. How can I get my system to recognize my external Iomega Zip drive? I have read the SuSE Help topics on mounting file systems, "using Zip floppies" and the "Iomega Zip Drive" and this has not been very helpful. I have added the following lines to my fstab file: /dev/sdb /zip ext2 rw,user,noauto 0 0 /dev/sdb /zip msdos rw,user,noauto 0 0 but when I try to "mount zip" from Konsole, it complains that it can't find zip in fstab or mtab. When I type "mount /zip", it says /dev/sdb is "not a valid block device." Keystroke codes in Linux/KDE?

Hi all. In Windoze, in almost any program, I can hold down the [Alt] key and type a three-digit code to produce characters that are outside the ASCII 128. For example, [Alt]-[1]-[3]-[0] is the "e-accent-aigu" character. I use it all the time to type french accented characters or characters from other European languages when attempting to respect people's (and places') proper names. This saves me the bother of loading (and learning...) various keyboard mappings that I don't normally need or want. It's also a great deal more convenient than mouse-based pick lists. Is there an equivalent keyboard-based function in Linux or in KDE (since I'm running most of my apps in KDE, now)? Thanks, /kevin -- ** DIR-ty DEEDS, and they're DONE dirt cheap. (Sing it, now...)

Moin-Moin, ich habe da mal 'ne Frage und das Listenarchiv (http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/ bzw. http://lists.suse.com/) brachte mich ebenso wie google mal nicht weiter, oder ich habe nicht alle moeglichen Wort auspropiert. Na wie dem auch sei, ich stelle sie jetzt einfach mal! Es geht darum, dass ich auf Dauer das Eingangs-Hintergrundbildchen (das bei der Benutzeranmledung) langweilig finde, na und nun wollte ich dieses ersetzen, allerdings nicht durch ein anderes Bild (dies steht ja in der Liste beschrieben) sondern ein kleines Intro (eine Katze die ueber den Bildschirm rennt oder eine andere Spielereien), dass ich mir dann selbst zusammenbasteln wuerde. Ich weiss allerdings nicht, welches Format in diesem Fall erlaubt ist und wie dies dann einzubinden ist, geschweige denn, ob das ueberhaupt moeglich ist. K Menu and SuSE upgrade and now Konqueror

I write from my Windows PC as I can not get on to the internet since the Yast2 online update! Original install 8.0 Pro My problems form the beginning. 1. K Menu could not be edited and did not match the correct listing in K Menu Editor. Another list recommended running kbuildsycoca which appeared to do nothing other than produce error messages but then I found that it has deleted / lost all the contents from my KMail Inbox! An Update was needed I thought so I did this a few days ago using YaST2 online update. 2. Now Knoqueror says An error occurred while loading .... Unknown host .... Now I need to fix Konqueror or internet connection. Possibly retrieve Mail Inbox if possible and get K Menu so that it shows what is set in K Menu Editor. Please can someone help this newbie to trouble shoot these issues. Thanks Chris

dcop problems (suse 7.3) and more

Hi, My computer (AMD 1000Mhz, 40gb IDE drive) has recently been moved from the UK to germany, and on starting up I encountered several problems with my linux system. So I'm trying to track down the source of these (spontaneous - I'd made no changes or updates to the system for a few weeks before) problems. There's a lot I don't know about linux so some of this will be a little clumsy, but my problem fits none that I've been able to find so far. My first question is whether there are any searchable forums or other resource that are appropriate for this type of problem. A good few hours have been wasted on google and around the suse/kde sites looking for information, but without much success. First off, lilo works fine. If I boot windows me (which has 30gig of the disk) it works fine and nothing seems to be wrong. Then if I try to boot linux (suse 7.3 out of the 7.3 personal distribution and the last time I used the online update package tool with yast2 was maybe mid-June) it works fine and I reach the login screen. If I try to log in as either user 'henshaw' (me) or 'root' with kde then it gives me the basic suse background and after a few seconds, I get "Could not read network connection list /home/henshaw/DCOP_server_linux_:0 Please check 'dcopserver' program is running" before being returned to the login screen. If I try to login with 'failsafe', 'fvvm' or 'tvm' I'm returned straight back to the login screen. If I try to login with 'windowmaker' I do get somewhere, but if I try to launch any process (ie the xterm icon or anything from the suse application menu I can reach by right-clicking on a blank area of screen) then a message tells me that that process cannot be launched. Booting first from the suse intallation disk and then "..from an existing partition" works and gives the same result. Choosing the linux - safe settings option from LILO gives me stranger problems - the output as I'm loading: (STUFF) SCSI subsystem driver Revision: 1.00 request_module[scsi_hostadaptor]: Root fs not found request_module[scsi_hostadaptor]: Root fs not found (MORE STUFF - 3-5 LINES) RAMDISK: Couldn't find valid RAM disk image starting at 0 Freeing initrd memory: 558k freed FAT: bogus logical sector size 0 FAT: bogus logical sector size 0 Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to write root fs on 03:07 (BLINKING CURSOR, NO RESPONSE TO INPUT) Exploring a little with the installation disk, I can see that all the packages that should be installed are, and that I have 3 linux partitions (as I expected) /hda5/ (no type) ~500mb - is the boot partition (I think) /hda6/ (swap) ~300mb - is swap /hda7/ (ext2) ~5gb - is my home directory (These sizes I set manually, as the installer wanted to use a lot more space but linux can read from a windows partition so I thought it only fair to give WinMe the bigger slice - that arrangement has worked hitch free for over a year) So what can i do to fix/further diagnose this problem. Ways to check the condition of the disk would be quite useful, and in particular the boot partition (LILO lives there, I think, but it should have a filesystem type shoulsn't it?) and to reach /home/henshaw/ so that I can try out something of the dcopserver problem. Hallo Liste! Habe ein groooosses Problem mit meinem Kmail 1.4.2. Es erkennt keine PGP-verschlüsselten Nachrichten, und lässt mich auch keine schreiben. Mit 1.3 hat's noch geklappt, seit 1.4.x ist essig... Kann mir jemand helfen? Die Schlüssel und alles funktionieren, hab's mit Sylpheed ausprobiert. danke im voraus Markus -- Just roadkill on the royal road to mathematics.

Problem with Konqueror 3.0.0

Hi All! When I try to view the source of a web page from Konqueror, it tries to reload the page from the web site. This same things happens when I try to save the file to look at it locally. I am trying to debug a cgi script and it appears to be a run-away. Therefore, anytime something tries to download the page it keeps going and going and going. To me the logical behavior when you save the file is to save what the browser currently has in memory. Saving the entire file is what should happen when you click "Save link as". Is there anyway to get Konqueror just to save what I have in memory and not reload the page each time? Any help is greatly appreaciated.
