[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. [opensuse-project] Can one manually become a "Member Emeritus"

Hi all, after reading https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Members, I understand that I can cancel my membership status with immediate effect and forever. To become a "Member Emeritus", with a "way back" into the community in case things might turn good again, I have to wait for the status request and just not respond to it. But the last such request was almost 3 years ago. IIUC I need to stop all actions on the mailing lists (might be a good idea ;-)) and packaging (not so good) for the bot to pick me up. So is there a manual procedure to follow to become "Member Emeritus"? Hello, It is with despair that I ask that you cancel my membership in openSUSE. The constant bickering on the mailing lists is by far outweighing any constructive growth/change in the project, and in light of everything else going on in the world, I just don't have the headspace for all that negative, unproductive noise. I'm cc'ing the project overall; please let this serve as a lesson that if one thinks they can bicker their way to the end result they want, they may find they arrive there alone. Hi all, There are a few open-source projects that have regular live streams/meetings about what's going on the project, interviews, etc. For example, there are Kubernetes office hours and Rancher office hours on YouTube. I would like to know if anyone would like to produce a regular official OpenSUSE After Hours stream where people involved in different projects at OpenSUSE can talk about what they are working on, what it's like being a member, etc. I'm thinking specifically about projects like Kubic, Uyuni, and OpenQA. Ideally this stream would be 100% geeky geeko fun and no politics (internal or otherwise). Just throwing this out there. I noticed there is no systematic monitoring of the "maintenance health" of openSUSE packages, i.e.. no way for a potentially interested future maintainer to check whether this or that package is in need of extra help, or whether everything is fine. This means that it's difficult for someone willing to volunteer to appreciate the "health" of packages as far as maintenance is concerned. Of course users can see commits timelines and failed builds, but they have to try and *infer* how wanted their help is when instead they could simply *read* this information. Also as far as I know there is no systematic monitoring of the number of users for a given package in home repositories. This means that maintainers might not always be aware that their package need to be registered against official repositories. Now a simple web service (implemented as new feature to software-o-o, for instance, but not necessarily) could bring closer end-users and maintainers, improving the visibility of packages that need more maintainers and providing direct feedback to maintainers so as to motivate them to port their packages onto the main openSUSE distributions. Hi all, as you can see in the minutes [1] for the last board meeting on 2020-08-04 we once again talked about the long standing topic of an openSUSE foundation. This came up in the light of the past months and the recent thread on this mailing list where governance structures were discussed. [2] Quoting the minutes "We need to broaden the group of people working on foundation" this is where we want to give the topic a push here on project ML. To give everyone an overview of what is done until now I condensed documents floating around in the wiki at "Current state". [3] *The why* The openSUSE community has the reputation of being progressive and thriving in terms of technical aspects. This is where the "do-ocracy" works impressively. Yet our organizational structure sometimes lacks behind, which is why we need to talk. There are good reasons for an independent openSUSE legal entity that have been already been discussed extensively before. Yet this comes with governance structures being not only necessary but also obligate. Having had structural challenging times recently and an obvious need from the community for progressive discussions makes the picture complete somehow. So throwing both topics together is just a logical consequence there. *To do* So I hereby invite everyone interested to chime in. Please get to know what's already been done on the first hand. Hello, This mail just to say that we did an openSUSE Leap 15.2 Launch Party, here at the local LUG (it's called GOLEM, it's in a small town in central Italy), and I feel like making a quick report. Sorry. :-/ We have space outside, so we could do an actual physical event and still respect the social distancing restrictions which are continue to hold here in Italy. First of all, this meant that I could bring and distribute the super- awesome swags that Doug sent me. And I really want to thank him a lot one more time for shipping them over extremely quickly. They are great and people loved them! Ah, the event was also recorded, but they still have to let me know whether that worked well or not. I decided to do a live install as I think our installer is great, and wanted to show it off a bit. :-) In fact, I've heard a few times people saying that installing openSUSE is difficult, and I wanted to give it a shot to busting that myth. I showed how it is possible to install the distro with just a few clicks, which is the opposite of difficult. After that, I went back and explained all the various possible customizations that one can make -- but only if she wants to-- at each stage. Feedback on this was extremely good, and I think I'm going to reuse this same approach for other similar occasions. While the installer was copying packages, there was the time to talk a bit about the characteristics of Leap such as its goals, release cycle, development process, relationship with SLE, etc. I quickly mentioned the maintenance process, taking advantage of some slides kindly provided by Marina (thanks to you again as well!), and this also was perceived as very interesting. After the system was ready, I had the time to showcase YaST a little, to explain how to add Packman repos for the codecs and to introduce BTRFS snapshots, snapper and demo a reboot into a previous snapshot and the rollback. I managed to hint quickly at OBS, but there was only the time to mention OpenQA, and I couldn't give them a meaningful tour of these two. People where curious and interested, so I call the event a success. They asked questions mainly about YaST, BTRFS and zypper. Plus two more, rather specific ones: 1) why don't we ship/install multimedia codec by default (even the proprietary and patent encumbered ones), like Ubuntu and even Debian? 2) why don't we use an LTSS kernel for Leap? Just to be clear, I'm not actually asking the questions here. :-) I just felt it would be useful to report this, especially considering that I hear these being asked pretty often, during various events or in various channels or forums. Anyways, I honestly think the event was a good one, considering that we're a small LUG from a small place and that we're still elbow deep inside a pandemic. :-/ And we're already planning a similar event about Tumbleweed! Hi, Today I am able to introduce you: https://meet2.opensuse.org which is a bare metal machine with 24 CPUs and 128 GB RAM. It is installed based on the packages provided by the trainees. Our trainees from SUSE are working hard on packaging jitsi for the (open)SUSE distributions and providing a new jitsi instance to the openSUSE community. They made an awesome progress! meet2 will be in testing phase starting Monday until 24.08.2020. If there are no problems we will switch the active service to the new instance (meet2 -> meet). Keep in mind that meet2 is also based on voluntary work. So please use meet2.opensuse.org for your community meetings and report problems to admin(a)opensuse.org The only known issue is the bandwidth which is currently limited to 1 GBit. But this will be solved when the server gets a new 10 Gbit NIC. I would like to thank Dominik Gedon, Enno Gotthold, Leon Schröder, Martin Rey and Quang Tran for their work and dedication with this project. Happy testing and a good and healthy time to all of you. Primary services affected are: - mailing lists - member aliases forwarding Apart from a minimal interruption at the time of switch-over, neither service should really see much effect of the migration, but you never know. The new setup includes spam- and virus filtering, selective greylisting, inbound and outbound TLS support, and an SRS daemon. [opensuse-project] Too many open bugs (Leap 15.2 retro)

Hello openSUSE! one of the items raised on the retrospective* was a large number of open bugs, not just for openSUSE Leap 15.2 but for openSUSE Distribution in general. Tracked as https://progress.opensuse.org/issues/70000 . I already had a discussion with Oliver and Antonis on this topic on the Quality Assurance event that took place last Friday in Schweig. I'd like to share with you the idea of a regular "Bug smashing" meetings. (I'd call those "Bug triaging", those meeting will not get bug fixed but just allow to triage them properly, if I understand correctly) These https://meet.opensuse.org meetings would focus on outstanding bugs and respective "problematic components" (e.g. Other or Base system). We'd focus on one Bugzilla component at a time and would go through the results of pre-agreed queries. It could be multiple short (20 mins) sessions per week E.g. "Base system" Bug smashing etc. I don't mind low attendance but having an option to join and raise particular issue is very important to me. Keep in mind that the openSUSE Release Team is supposed to do this "overseeing" anyway. But I think we can be a bit more transparent about it. The idea is that I'd share screen go through the list of bugs, find an agreement on the next steps, and then the person sharing the screen (typically Release Team member) would write an update to the bug. This would then be followed by sending a notification to the bug owner or finding a new bug owner in case of no response. The public and virtual nature of sessions would enable people to join and raise attention to the bug that might be not getting enough attention. The goal should be on processing bugs in a way that we're able to achieve a decent response time and not cause a potential decrease in quality or close bugs that might potentially lead to a data loss. We're not doing this for the sake of better-looking statistics, but to have a more stable distribution. The pre-requisite for this is an agreed policy about how to tackle bugs properly. So we're helping instead of causing harm. The policy should provide answers to the following questions: What is expected to be tracked in Bugzilla and where to track other requests. E.g. the Documentation component is a bit controversial as it contains various types of requests. Criteria for keeping bugs open or closing them. (aka cleanup that helps). E.g. the definition of CLOSED/Insufficient data, do not close issues that lead to data loss. Agreement about setting the priority on issues, who is expected to do so, and what it means to the bug owner be it SUSE Employee or not. There are two ways how to see priority. How much of an issue is it for Given release (e.g. release can't be shipped with open P1 or P0) and how big of a priority is it to the bug owner. We need to find an agreement. Agreement about ownership of bugs. How does the screening team fit in and so on ... Agreement how to track 'seen' bugs P5 vs Confirmed etc. Agreement on who handles regular processing of bugs for what product(s) and what releases/versions. The last one is important as there seems to be a big difference in overseeing issues for the current release and releases in the maintenance phase. Who should oversee maintenance updates is still an open topic at least for SLE. I find it very interesting you took my observations as 'accusations'. After all, I feel my observations are easily justifiable. In your platform, the "Why you shoud vote for me.." section ONLY states the No-Confidence Vote. There is no mention of the Foundation in that section at all. The "Current Issues" section dedicates a large paragraph to the No- Confidence Vote. That paragraph calls the work of your potential teammates 'unncessary' and 'disgraceful'. In the same section you only provide a single sentance to the foundation. There are no details as how you'd support the topic or what you'd expect the foundation to look like. And of your goals 3 of them are clearly related to your no-confidence motion, 1 is related to the foundation, and 1 is somewhat more generic. Considering the above, I think it's very easy for any reasnoble reader to feel that your primary motivation for running is to re-hash the no- confidence vote and there is a significant lack of substance beyond that. If the perception I got from that is incorrect, fine, then my first reply was a clear opportunity to clear up that misperception on my part. I find it exceptionally telling that, once realising that we had a difference in opinion regarding the content of your platform, that the discussion has evolved the way it has. I would have hoped a Board member would have taken the opportunity to look inward, and ask themselves how a voting Member like myself got such an impression. You have instead taken the route you have, even going so far to use rhetorical deflections to suggest that my words are more telling about my motives than yours. I think it's important for you to realise, my motives don't matter. I'm not the one running for the Board, I'm just a voter like several hundred others who's support you will need. You are the one running for the Board, and I suspect this thread has done a good job of showing what sort of Board member you could be. I'd like to thank you for all the responses in this thread. I have found it very insightful and helpful in deciding where my vote will go.
