We've briefly discussed during the last IRC meeting about what went
bad in 10.2 and how we can do this better for future products,
especially 10.3. I'm mainly interested in process feedback - and not
on feedback that package x is broken (unless that shows a process
problem).
So, let's discuss what we can do better for our next distro,
Andreas

I'd like to inform you about the following two changes to bugzilla:
openSUSE 10.3
=============
We have created a new product and opened it. Some of the bugs that
will not be fixed for 10.2 are moved over to that product.
SUSE Linux 10.0
===============
Our policy is to only fix security bugs for released products and we
fix the occasional critical bugs. Security bugs are reported by the
security team and with 10.1 out and 10.2 nearly finished, we're not
fixing critical bugs anymore so we do not really need a public
bugzilla here. We do see some misuse especially with 10.0 where
people report bugs against different products or ask for general help
and have therefore decided to make it non-public tomorrow.
SUSE Linux 10.1 will stay open for now - and openSUSE 10.2 is the
product we're working on,

Hi everyone,
as discussed at the "openSUSE community meeting" I have implemented the
opensuse10.2 version of instlux. Instlux [1] is an open source project for
installing linux from windows, without configuring the BIOS, so that it
makes it really easy for a windows user.
You can download it from the project web page [1].
Next step, as discussed at the meeting, will be to rebuild the DVD so it
includes instlux in the autorun file. This way, when inserted during a
Windows session, it will automatically start the installer. For this purpose
I will use the makeSuSEDVD[2] script, and as agreed on the meeting, I will
report the results here.
However, I can not publish the remastered DVD because of the registered
trademarks. So, do I have permission to do so? Or should I use the rembrand
[3] scripts in order to remove all the trademarks?
Thanks,
jordi

Hello,
thangs for all the responces. They helped a lot.
But I ask for a program, moving my telescope, stacking my pictures taken with
my web-cam, knowing picture-formats like fits and with a GUI like celestia
and all the functions like kstar or carde du ciel. With other words a program
wich do allmost all functions a hobby-astronom would use.
Thats all, because I would stopp using 'windoof' for my astronomical hobby and
would use Linux .
With regards
Rainer

Hello together,
I would ask for a good program for astronomical purpose (think of KStar)?

I was looking for anyone already working on LTSP5, My search on Google
was LTSP5+SUSE and I found this page
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+roadmap
it must say that somehting they want is already in SUSE some 25 times.
If only we already LTSP5 I could just post that they should just switch
to SUSE :) LOL

One of Ubuntu's strong points as I understand is the fact that it has packages
for "everything" and they all can be installed easily with apt-get.
SUSE has made a great step towards "everything" with Build Service, there are
now a lot of nice repositories there with cool stuff.
But it's still difficult to install software from the Build Service
repositories. First, you need to browse the site, then figure out the
repository link, go to YaST and add it there. There should be a way in YaST
that lists all the repos in Build Service with short descriptions of the
contents. This list must be automated, not maintained by somebody. When a
new repository is created in the Build Service, it should automagically be
listed.
And more:
Right now, Konqueror has a very useful feature: when clicking a .rpm link on a
webpage, it downloads the .rpm and displays a button "Install with YaST".
It's genius.
Extending this feature would be to be able to click on a link to a file that
describes an installation source and Konqueror would display a button "Add
this installation source".
The current situation is not easy enough, the user needs to go to YaST
installation sources and type or copy/paste an url from somewhere. Too much
for a lot of people.

> So, let's discuss what we can do better for our next distro,
I mentioned some of these on IRC, but I'll mention them here too:
I'd really like to see Zypper become a really mature and efficient (+speedy)
app for the command line, and I know a lot of things for Zypper are in the
works, so let me mention some of them:
And just wishes, such as:
* Full metalink support, especially for release time, and a metalink client
shipped with 10.3. This would include handling our own metalinks, which we
can make work with the torrent too.
--------------
<snip>
I just thought I would add that aria2 and other clients are working on the
partial file checksums which will allow downloads over ftp/http to automatically
correct errors during the download, resulting in a simpler process for most users.
The groundwork has been laid for KGet in KDE4 as well, and a Firefox plugin is
under development too.
As far as handling your own metalinks, that would be great! The project might
want to look into Bouncer (http://wiki.osuosl.org/display/Bouncer/Home) which
powers Mozilla and OpenOffice.org downloads I believe. It's been patched to support Metalink, but even without that it should be helpful...From some of the features, you can see how well it should integrate with Metalink on the server side.
"Sentry is a multi-threaded Python daemon that queries and tests your mirror network to make sure it is intact. It is responsible for running scheduled tasks (via cron) that can perform a number of tests:
1. Check that mirrors respond
2. Check that files exist on mirrors
3. Check that all files on all mirrors pass their hash code comparison
4. Run full tests on new mirrors and files
5. Spot checks on one randomly selected file on each mirror"
(There will also be a metalink lightning talk at FOSDEM).

Hi everyone,
After a very successful FOSDEM participation in 2006, we are happy to
announce that the openSUSE project will be taking part at FOSDEM 2007!
Besides representing openSUSE with a booth, we managed to get one of the
greatly demanded "devrooms", to conduct sessions centered around the
openSUSE project.
So, first of all, what the heck is "FOSDEM"? Quoting fosdem.org:
>> The seventh Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting
is a 2 days event, organized by volunteers, to promote the widespread
use of Free and Open Source software. Taking place in the beautiful city
of Brussels (Belgium), FOSDEM meetings are recognized as "The best Free
and Open Source events in Europe.
The event will take place *February 24th and 25th 2007* in Brussels
(Belgium).
FOSDEM 2006 attracted over 4000 visitors from all around the world.
Entrance and attendance to the event is totally free of charge! <<
In 2006 we launched the openSUSE build service at FOSDEM and attended with
more than 20 SUSE/Novell people. In fact, we had both a booth and a
"devroom", which was used to conduct several presentations and community
meetings. The overall response to our 2006 activities was very positive!
[Proceedings are available from http://en.opensuse.org/FOSDEM2006]
For 2007, we dare to challenge all of us, the community, to play a much more
active role in making FOSDEM 2007 a great success. Therefore we would like
to open a "call for papers" and encourage everyone to send proposals to the
opensuse-project(a)opensuse.org mailing list. Proposals should be submitted by
*January 15th 2007*.
We will do our very best to support all community activities around FOSDEM.
Please share your ideas, visions, and comments regarding a successful FOSDEM
participation with us. FOSDEM will be the forum for open discussions about
the future of openSUSE.
We are looking forward to meeting all of you at FOSDEM 2007!
A happy holiday season and a great new year to all of you!
Your openSUSE team
