Dear openSUSE Community,
sometimes plans change while you are working on them ;-)
The plan for yesterday evening was to move and update some of the
localized wikis. Things worked better and faster than expected, and in
the end we moved *all 18 localized wikis* from Provo to Nuremberg and
updated them to MediaWiki 1.27 :-)
This means *all* openSUSE wikis are now running on MediaWiki 1.27 and
support the features announced for the english wiki last week [1].
I didn't have time to change the <feed> tags to the new <rss> tags in
all wikis yet. I'll do that in the next days, but I won't complain if
someone is faster and does it in some of the wikis ;-)
(use the search to find pages containing "<feed", and check
https://en.opensuse.org/Help:RSS_feeds for the <rss> syntax)
For those who are interested in statistics:
- moving 18 wikis in about 6 hours means about 20 minutes per wiki - can
someone beat this? ;-)
- during the move, we wrote about 500 lines on IRC to coordinate
everything
- this helped to keep the read-only time of each wiki short - I'd guess
on average each wiki was read-only for 30 minutes (again, can someone
beat this? ;-)
- we moved about 10 GB of uploaded files and 1.6 GB of mysql dumps
from Provo to Nuremberg yesterday (which was sometimes "funny" because
the server in Provo limits the connection to 10 MBit)
And now - have fun with the updated wikis and the upcoming openSUSE
Leap 42.3!
Regards,
Christian Boltz

The only reason coders' computers work better than non-coders'
computers is coders know computers are schizophrenic little children
with auto-immune diseases and we don't beat them when they're bad.

Hi,
Just in case our heroes haven't realized yet, it seems as if part of the
opensuse.org infrastructure (e.g. wiki.opensuse.org) is down.

Matthias

Dear openSUSE Community,
the MediaWiki instance hosted behind en.opensuse.org has been moved from
the old Provo cluster to the new Nuremberg opensuse network.
Together with the move, the wiki also got an update from MediaWiki 1.22
to 1.27, and the VM hosting it from an old SLE version to openSUSE Leap
42.3 (yes, we are eating our own dogfood!)
New features are:
- including files directly from github
-> https://en.opensuse.org/Help:GitHub_inclusion
- namespace-specific boilerplates (page templates) when creating new
pages -> https://en.opensuse.org/Help:MultiBoilerplate
- better search (elasticsearch) - now searching all namespaces, but with
different weight
- login is now done using the Auth_remoteuser extension - but still with
your openSUSE login
- support for several map providers
- switched extension for RSS feed integration (this needs adjustments on
the pages that include RSS feeds)
-> https://en.opensuse.org/Help:RSS_feeds
- watching a category (when pages get added to or removed from it) is
now part of MediaWiki core
- removal of Hermes notifications - MediaWiki's own notifications work
much better
If you encounter any issue, please let us know by mail to
admin(a)opensuse.org.
We'll let the dust settle for some days, and plan to move and update the
localized wikis next week.
Regards,
Christian Boltz

...and new bugs. Funny how people tend to forget about that.

Hi all,
We have three weeks until the release!
I put the release announcement on the wiki at
https://en.opensuse.org/Release_announcement_42.3. Please translate the
announcement and post the respective links to your wiki pages. Screen
shots on the announcement need to be updated to the Leap 42.3 version.
I'll add this announcement to news.o.o. on the day of the release.
If anyone in the project wants to add screen shots for Leap 42.3, please
feel free to start the page from https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:42.3
Thank you to those of you who translated the social media plan. Much
appreciated.

Hi all,
The openSUSE Project is making a "Getting Started with Linux" magazine
with Linux Magazine. We are looking for volunteers who would like to
write an article focusing on one of the following bullet topics:
*
System Logs - one of the most important parts of Linux: you can quite
easily see what's happening and when and fix the problem or Google for
that
*
Remote Administration - e.g., good for asking for help some advanced
Linux user for help, for screen-sharing, for pair-/something/
*
Snapper/Snapshots - to make recovery points and to "go back" and
recover after a failure, booting to an old snapshot after update
*
Services Management - to speedup the system, to tell more about the
architecture showing separate services as basic concepts of the Linux
system, to see what's actually running, to tune the system (advanced)
If anyone is interested in getting published and would like to write
about one of the topics above, please contact me, so I could add you to
the Trello board. The article would need to be about 700-800 words with
4-6 supporting screenshots.
The first draft submission is July 17 with the final article submission
date on August 1.

Hi all,
I started the screenshots page for openSUSE Leap 42.3 at
https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:42.3/Screenshots
If you want to help out or contribute to this release, please replace
the 42.2 screen shots with newer 42.3 screenshots.
Thank you for any contributions you can provide.

Hello,
[cross-post - please reply only on one of the mailinglists]
A month after the first call for testing the updated wiki, here is
another one ;-)
Compared to the "old" test wiki [1], there were a few changes:
- the test wiki is now running on the final VMs that will also be used
for the production wiki
- login is now done with the Auth_remoteuser extension (which means we
can continue to use the "nice" login form)
- the test wiki is now based on a (nearly) up-to-date snapshot of the
english wiki
- several changes "under the hood", including automated setup of the VMs
and the wikis with salt, some extension updates, config tuning etc.
- oh, and the wiki VMs are already running openSUSE Leap 42.3 :-)
That all said - the test wiki is waiting for you at
https://en-test.opensuse.org/
Please check if everything still works, play with it, test the new
features, ...! It is a test instance, so nobody will complain if you do
test edits that don't make sense content-wise
At the same time, remember that it is a test instance, so any changes
you do will be lost when I re-import the database dump for whatever
reason.
If you notice any issues, please report them - either in one of the
mailinglists (opensuse-wiki preferred) or send a mail to
admin(a)opensuse.org
If nothing terrible happens, I plan to update en.opensuse.org next week.
If you enjoyed testing the new wiki, please also take some time to go to
our current wiki (en.opensuse.org or $LANG.opensuse.org) - there are
lots of pages that need an update ;-)
And finally - thanks to everybody who helped me to get everything in
shape!
Regards,
Christian Boltz
[1] See https://en-test.opensuse.org/Main_Page for the list of changes
compared to the current production wikis.
It's probably more impressive than the list in this mail ;-)

The real crime is that I'm not allowed to marry my database.
