I never install GDM or Gnome, so don't know, but recommendations in various docs,
e.g. $SUBJECT, to open a tty via Ctrl-Alt-F1 need adjustment if the answer is true.
Ctrl-Alt-F6 may now be the better recommendation. As I understand it, when GDM is
on tty1, it sometimes also ties up tty2.
