Hi all,
after reading https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Members, I understand that I can cancel my membership status with
immediate effect and forever.
To become a "Member Emeritus", with a "way back" into the community in case things might turn good again, I have to wait
for the status request and just not respond to it. But the last such request was almost 3 years ago. IIUC I need to stop
all actions on the mailing lists (might be a good idea ;-)) and packaging (not so good) for the bot to pick me up.
So is there a manual procedure to follow to become "Member Emeritus"?
Best regards,
Stefan

As such, maintaining 447 [1] openSUSE members should not depend on a
single tool. Especially not if the used tool has open, well known
security issues since years[2].

I made my proposal already and I stand the point: shut down an insecure
system!
what does "drive forward a solution" mean? Can we integrate the
functions of connect.o.o into other services at openSUSE which are
allready maintained like the openSUSE wiki? A form for travel support
for example?
An application for membership could be done by e-mail to an e-mail
address of the membership officials. Elections could be done with an
eVote software like https://github.com/mdipierro/evote for example, but
probably there are better tools.
What did I miss?
I think Lars is right an we should shutdown this insecure system as soon
as possible.

Christian Imhorst

On the board meeting two hours ago we discussed adding an
"abstain" option to future votes. We unanimously agreed.
That is, future votings shall include "abstain" as a choice.
Thank you to all who provided feedback!
Gerald
PS: We understand board elections allow a flexible number of
choices, including choosing no candidate, so we do not see
this as applicable there.

Dear openSUSE community,
in the last weeks, some things happened in the board that are completely
against my principles and beliefs. I don't want to go into details, and
will get straight to the heart:
I'm resigning from the board.
I know this is a drastic step, and I can assure you that I didn't take
this decision easily.
In the best interest of the openSUSE project and everybody involved,
please don't speculate about the details or ask for them.
Of course, I won't let the community suffer from what happened, and will
continue everything else I do in and for openSUSE (for example my heroes
tasks and my work on AppArmor).
Even more important: I have many friends in the community, and this is
something that will never change! I'm looking forward to meet you again.
There is one thing I'll open up for discussion: One of my heroes tasks
is to maintain the elections.opensuse.org server. I don't have any evil
plans ;-) but I could fully understand if someone thinks that I better
should keep my fingers off it and hand it over to another hero.
If someone thinks so, please speak up (doesn't need to be public, you
can even ask a board member to relay it to me anonymously). I guarantee
that I won't be mad at whoever asks for this. However, the hero who has
to take over maintenance of elections.o.o might be ;-)
Regards,
Christian Boltz
PS: All the best, Vinz! Supporting your appointment was my last
official act on the board.

Dear Community,
several members asked for a clarification and, even if we tried to
keep the desired confidentiality as already mentioned in the other
threads, there are not many alternatives to (at least) partially
disclosing what happened in the last weeks.
What guided the decision taken were our community guiding principles
and code of conduct.
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Guiding_principles
"We value respect for other persons and their contributions, for other
opinions and beliefs. We listen to arguments and address problems in a
constructive and open way. We believe that a diverse community based
on mutual respect is the base for a creative and productive
environment enabling the project to be truly successful. We don't
tolerate social discrimination and aim at creating an environment
where people feel accepted and safe from offense."
For the second time Sarah significantly breached the guiding
principles and how she chose to deal with this situation led to 2/3rds
of board members believing that she should step down from her role
within the board.
As all of you can imagine, this decision was not an easy one, and the
board gave her the opportunity to try to solve what happened.
Unfortunately the ultimate outcome was to offer her to step down
instead of publicly removing her from the board per the openSUSE
election rules.
Christian was the board member against this decision and to our regret
decided to step down.
Yours
Marina,
On behalf of the board.

On behalf of the entire openSUSE Board I am happy to welcome Vinz
(Vinzenz Vietzke) to fill our open seat.
Vinz' appointment is in alignment with a recommendation by our
Election Officials and an unanimous decision by the Board.
And given how recent the last elections are and how close their results,
we want to extend that invitation for a two year term -- also since we'd
be facing four of five seats being up for the next yearly election cycle
otherwise.
Please join me in welcoming and supporting Vinz!

I remember a kerfuffle some time ago where members requested that board meeting notes be made public. The response (I'm paraphrasing) was that sometimes the board deals with personal matters regarding members of the community and it would not be share those details publicly. We are all rational adults for the most part and we understand that. However that doesn't mean that transparency should be thrown out of the window. If something happened that could potentially affect the community, then it would be best to be open about it. If something happened that caused multiple board members to leave then there should be a statement about it even if it means omitting personal information about anyone involved.
In a few months there will be another election of board members. One question that should be posed for anyone running again should be "what is your opinion about an open and transparent board and would you work towards this goal?"

Hi all,
Since the current NNTP gateway by MicoFocus is being shutdown from Wed 19th of
June, there will temporarily be none. Meanwhile some of our community members
are working on replacing it, announcements about this will follow a.s.a.p.

Dear openSUSE community,
I would like to apologize to all who have felt to be ignored as Advocates or
tackled by what I said in the last weeks. I didn't want to hurt you,
and have to admit that - since we are such a big community - I wasn't
aware of all activities and contributions by all Contributors in our special and local
groups.
I wanted to suggest improvements.
Best regards,
Sarah

Dear openSUSE community,
I had run for the Board after the request to do so. I was really happy to be elected and be allowed to contribute there again.
I have to step down because of personal reasons.
I have many friends in this community. We will meet us again.
Best regards,
Sarah
