I just noticed today that the gmane.linux.suse.opensuse.user group is
missing from gmane.org - did the project request the list be removed from
gmane?
Just wondering if it was intentional or if something went wrong somewhere.
Thanks,
Jim

Of course we still see people getting this wrong on a regular basis,
but googling for "SUSE capitalization" doesn't reveal anything
helpful. IMHO we need a wiki page covering the One Absolute Truth,
and also a bit of the history behind it. I found this thread from
2005:
http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2005-08/msg00377.html
but it didn't provide the full story.
Additionally,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SUSEhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SuSE
are (somewhat depressingly) two entirely different articles, neither
of which gives any real detail over the renaming from SuSE to SUSE.
Shouldn't there be a page
https://en.opensuse.org/Capitalization
or something?

Hi all,
As you know we had a week-long meeting in Nuremberg. Quite a few of the things
we've been working on (openQA, OBS workflow etc) were shared by now. Besides
discussing features, we scheduled our work.
In the previous thread on $SUBJECT, Simon noted that going for a release in
November seemed a far smarter compromise between the benefits of releasing and
getting some improvements in our tool chain than skipping a release. Most of
the team agreed on this right away and we'd like to go for that.
However. This does not mean the initial idea of doing a more 'relaxed' release
is off the table. Planning software development is hard, planning
experimentation (like the staging projects we are toying with) is impossible so
we can not predict when we will be done. This means that we still intend to
take those of you who stepped forward to help out with the release up on their
offer. The exact nature of what we release is still to be determined and we'd
like to make a more final decision on how much effort we can and will put in in
August. So far it is sure that we would need some volunteer to keep eye on
Factory and release milestones at least till then.
So, for now, this will be a 'community release'. This might mean less QA but
also no security updates provided by SUSE! Especially if it comes to the latter
case we should communicate this carefully to our users as it will be more like
a slightly more stabilized milestone than a successor to openSUSE 13.1. How to
call it, how to communicate and what exactly it will look like - August.
When exactly we will be fully back to working on Factory, releasing milestones,
and working on the release we will hopefully be able to determine in August as
well.
Thoughts?

Hi,
Let me quickly grap the opportunity to introduce myself. I am a Master
of Science(FOSS) student from India . I have completed my project
Hepunion
filesystem with CERN last summer.
You can find more details about me and my project here
https://google-melange.appspot.com/gsoc/proposal/review/google/gsoc2013/dis…
I would like to tell a little bit about this project so as to let the
community know about my skill sets-
Hepunion filesystem is a stackable filesystem I was developing for
CERN( the European Organization for Nuclear Research). CERN needs a
Union filesystem for LHCb(Large Hadron Collider Beauty) to provide
fast diskless booting for LHCb's nodes. For such an implementation,
they need a file system with two branches a Read-Write and a Read Only
so they decided to write a completely new union file system called
Hepunion. The filesystem is stable till 2.6.34 kernel as of now and is
being planned to upgraded to newer kernel versions.
Now this year also I want to participate in a linux based project. As
per my discussion with Saurabh Sood, I came across the project "Better
Cloud images with KIWI" . I would like to contribute to this project
so as to learn new things and contribute to the OpenSuse Community. I
would like to admit that I am a novice in Perl since major amount of
my work has been limited to kernel space so I am basically a C
programmer though I have written scripts in Perls for automation and
testing.
I have worked on Embedded Systems(both ARM and X86) and have worked on
projects like Linux From Scratch so have some better understanding of
concepts involved in Linux Boot Process.
Kindly let me know the prerequisites needed to contribute to this
project so that I can apply for the same as a GSOC Project for 2014.
Regards,
Saket Sinha

I've put in a little energy in the Google docs and put it on news.o.o to be
published, imho.
https://news.opensuse.org/?p=17527&preview=true
It misses some pictures, doesn't talk about sponsorship and doesn't mention
the business track...
But I can't fix that - I have to go to Brazil now :D so somebody else will
have to do the actual publishing.
Hugs,
Jos
Hi All,
As many may know, our search for a location for oSC15 has not been
successful so far. Our next gathering, oSC14 in Dubrovnik is approaching
fast and it would be great to remove the uncertainty surrounding the
openSUSE Conference in 2015.
The openSUSE board invites you to consider organizing and hosting the
openSUSE conference in 2015. The openSUSE Conference (oSC) is the
primary yearly gathering of Geekos from around the world. The conference
venue requirements can be found on the openSUSE wiki
(https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Conference_venue_requirements .) This
is your chance to show the world of Geekos the hospitality and culture
of your country. One member of the organizing team will be invited to
attend oSC14 at the end of April, 2014 in Dubrovnik and present the
location of oSC15. We are looking for a location that can be reached by
plane, train, and bus (mainland Europe or the UK.)
Please submit your proposals to either opensuse-project(a)opensuse.org or
board(a)opensuse.org. We are happy to consider proposals from teams that
would like to organize the event but are currently not actively involved
with the openSUSE community.
oSC15 should take place in the March-May time frame in 2015, roughly 1
year after oSC14. Your proposal should include a description of the
location (city/town and venue) and provide information about your
organization team and any experience you may have had organizing other
events. Items to consider are cost of lodging around the venue, access
to public transportation to and from the airport/train station and
hotels to venue, and proximity to a venue for a party.
Thanks you for considering to host oSC15, we are looking forward to
receiving your proposal.

Looking around I've found this page in the wiki with obsolete content which need a refresh.
Could one of the osc14 team add the review and refresh in the trello todo
And publish accurate informations.

Hello,
I just received the LinuxTag call for papers.
There are some changes: LinuxTag decided to join up with droidcon and
re:publica, which also includes a location change (but it's still in
Berlin, Germany).
Also note the changed date - May 8 - 10
(an annoucement after last year's LinuxTag contained a date at the end
of June)
You can find the call for papers below, the call for projects will open
in February - I hope we can have an openSUSE booth there again :-)
Note: I removed lots of tracking links before forwarding the mail, so
please don't be too surprised if the text says "click here" and you can't
find a link nearby ;-) - just click here: http://linuxtag.org/2014/

Betreff: LinuxTag: Call for Papers
Datum: Sonntag, 26. Januar 2014
Dear Christian Boltz,
since you contributed in the past to LinuxTag, we'd like to update you about
this year's event scheduled for ** May 8 - 10, 2014 in Berlin, Germany ** . We
stay in Germany's capital, but a lot of other exiting things change: First of
all, we ** team up with droidcon ** , the world's larges independent summit
for Android developer and ** re:publica ** , one of the world's most important
festivals for the digital society. We also move the venue right into the heart
of Berlin, to an industrial landmark, a loungy former railway station in
Berlin's Kreuzberg quarter.
Behind the scenes we've taken over the organization of the whole event and are
thus much ** more flexible for special arrangements ** . LinuxTag Association
still organizes the program in a ** non-for-profit ** way and depends thus on
** support from sponsors ** . You could help LinuxTag by sending us
appropriate contacts from your marketing or recruiting departments to [
sponsoring(a)linuxtag.org ] , if this is feasible. Your help is highly appreciated.
Our ** Call for Papers ** is open as in previous years at
[ Virtual Conference Center ]
and is waiting for your proposals until ** Feburary 7, 2014. ** Our program
committee decided to focus the conference on nine main topics. Click on the
links to find out about the holistic idea behind the subjects originating from
the day-to-day experiences of Linux and Open Source users, administrators, and
developers:
* [ Find out: Tracing, troubleshooting, and logging ]
* [ Protect yourself: Security after Snowden ]
* [ Fancy a game? Linux' new steps into entertainment ]
* [ Make it so: Configuration management and software deployment ]
* [ Roll your own: Bring back your servers home ]
* [ Extensible Attic: Deal with vast amounts of data ]
* [ Pimp the Web: Speed up your apps and improve user experience ]
* [ Go agile: Small steps for your code, but a giant leap for Users ]
* [ OpenStack: One IaaS platform for all needs ]
We appreciate any proposals and ask you to ** relay this message to friends,
team members, or co-workers ** . Apart from the main topics, we also gladly
accept ** proposals for other subjects ** . Additionally, for the first time
we have also the opportunity to have more informal lectures, workshops, or
mini barcamps in the evening, since we may use the venue until late.
We're also looking for ** session chairs ** , who support reviewing proposals,
and ** moderators/crew members ** who help us during the conference. If you
are interested, drop us a note at [ conference(a)linuxtag.org ] .
Don't hestitate to ask if you have questions. Suggest ideas to improve
LinuxTag.
On behalf of the conference team,
Tobias Paepke and Nils Magnus

Christian Boltz

Hi,
Sorry it took a bit to get these posted. The board had its first meeting
of the new year on the 13th. The meeting minutes are now posted on the wiki:
http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Board_meeting#Meeting_2014-01-13
As always if you have any questions or concerns please reply to this
thread or send a message to the boar ML.
We will have a face to face meeting in Nuremberg February 8th & 9th. If
any one has topics that you think should be discussed at the meeting
please bring them to our attention. We are still iterating on the rough
outline of an agenda and expect to post it to the wiki after the next
board call this coming Monday January 27.
Have a lot of fun....
