[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/): it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/), and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/): it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. Pavol and I will take the final decision since we are the GSoC admins for openSUSE. [opensuse-project] opensuse-user not on gmane any more?

I just noticed today that the gmane.linux.suse.opensuse.user group is missing from gmane.org - did the project request the list be removed from gmane? Just wondering if it was intentional or if something went wrong somewhere. Dear openSUSE Developers, since 1974 researchers and software developers try to ease software debugging. Over the last years, they created many new tools and formalized methods. We are interested if these advancements have reached professional software developers and how they influenced their approach. To find this out, we are conducting an Online Survey for Software Developers. From the results we expect new insights into debugging practice that help us to suggest new directions for future research. [opensuse-project] openSUSE 11.4 has reached end of Evergreen support

Hi, as you probably know our initial commitment to support 11.4 within Evergreen was until July 2014. http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Evergreen While I was hoping that we can keep 11.4 alive for some time longer this is currently not possible from what I would call the "core team" which is Stefan and myself. We are too busy nowadays to be able to scan and patch every issue we get aware of. Thanks to you all who contributed to the success of Evergreen/11.4! The important message is: openSUSE 11.4 Evergreen is not actively maintained anymore! So if you can, we recommend to switch to openSUSE 13.1 as soon as possible which is still planned to be an Evergreen release. Some more details below: The repository already got and will most likely get more updates from package maintainers who care about 11.4 and/or their packages though. You noticed that with recent releases of patches for the bash and NSS issues already, BUT this is _no_ guarantee that every security issue will be fixed. We will accept contributions from anyone though and I will try to take care about "my" packages. Some numbers from 11.4 Evergreen (as far as I was able to get them easily): Evergreen lifetime: 21 months 11.4 overall lifetime (incl. [opensuse-project] Request for design and marketing for openSUSE Conference 2015

Dear all, today we've had our first IRC meeting regarding the organization of openSUSE Conference 2015 (in The Hague NL on 1-4th of may 2015)! Minutes of that meeting can be found here: http://community.opensuse.org/meetings/opensuse-project/2014/opensuse-proje… One of our highest priorities at the moment is the creation of artwork (logo's and website theming) and composing announcements to raise awareness about the conference. We hope that we can stand on the shoulders of the Geeko giants and re-use what has already been used (and worked) in the past and create what isnt there yet. So here is some general info and trivia about The Hague and The Netherlands that might be of use in creating the materials needed: - Official flag colors NL: Red - White - Blue in horizontal stripes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Netherlands ) - Official logo of the city of The Hague: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_The_Hague - Semi official sign for the city of The Hague is the Stork bird - Colors of The Hague are green (Yay!) and yellow: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Den_Haag#mediaviewer/File:Flag_of_The_Hague.svg Of course The Netherlands are famous for their: - cheese - windmills - wooden shoes - the fact that most of our country is well below sea level - the Delta works - cows and farming in general - the best soccer team in the world that has not ever (yet!) been worldchampion - throwing awesome conferences - and more cheese Hopefully this will provide some inspiration!
