[opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money

Hi, (let's see how a public discussion about money goes :-)) The Google Summer of Code brings us great students, but also means that the openSUSE project will get $8000 (if I'm not mistaken) at the end of the summer. That's $500 per student. A while ago, I requested comments on my blog about what to do with the money, but didn't get any feedback. So I take this as "do what you feel is best", and this mail is about the plan. As a reminder, the main issue is that we will likely not have the openSUSE Foundation created in time for this. For instance, Google would like us to get some form filled before the end of June; this is not a mandatory timeline, but I think it shows that we won't be ready with the Foundation for that. The current plan is to give that money to another organization we feel close to, and I have two candidates in mind: - the Software Freedom Conservancy (http://sfconservancy.org/) it's a really nice org that provides a home for various cool projects (see http://sfconservancy.org/members/current/) and those projects help make openSUSE a great project. - the Desktop Summit (https://www.desktopsummit.org/) it's one of the biggest event this year, and this would help us have some more visibility (since we'd be sponsors, I guess). I'm sure they would welcome this to secure their budget. Note that an alternative solution would be to leave the money to Google for a future GSoC or similar program, but I feel it's better to use the money where it can make a difference today. Now, it's not too late to change the plan. If you have a better suggestion, please tell us. There's no need to argue forever about it, just explain why you think it's good. Keep in mind that if we cannot receive the money ourselves, this also means that we cannot use it to buy stuff for openSUSE. [opensuse-project] [Announcement] SUSE Release SLE Sources to openSUSE Project

Dear Community, SUSE is preparing to pro-actively release a significant portion of the SUSE Linux Enterprise source code, including a regular stream of maintenance updates, to the openSUSE Project. These packages will give the community an enduring, stable, and maintained base, upon which exciting community led offerings could be built. An openSUSE community distribution built upon this base can plan for a sustainable stream of packages, as we intend to continue releasing and updating this platform in line with the cadence of SUSE Linux Enterprise and it's service packs. We at SUSE are going to be using this opportunity to focus more engineering efforts on the common elements between SLE and openSUSE, by directly increasing contributions to openSUSE and sharing sources, tools and processes to optimize collaboration for the mutual benefits. As members of the openSUSE community, we at SUSE invite everyone else in the community to collaborate on this base and to consider leveraging it for future openSUSE releases. We're keen to hear your feedback and talk about involvement in this project. [opensuse-project] Want to be part of openFATE Screening Team

Hey, Just a few weeks ago I came to know about openFATE and got so in love with it. So, I decided to be part of openFATE Screening Team. For that I've tried to contact on #opensuse-project on freenode. From there I got reference to spyhawk. On contacting him I found out that he is not doing screening. Then I've mailed everyone listed on https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Openfate_screening. Only Andreas Jaeger replied. And he too is not doing the screening. So, some questions now. Is anyone doing openFATE screening? If anyone is doing. Then, I also want to start screening. Tell me how can I start? Thank you for registering for the openSUSE Conference 2015 in the Hague! Conference check-in starts at 09:00 on Friday. The address of the venue is: Westvliet Sport Center Westvliet 55 Den Haag Netherlands The closest public transport stop is Station Voorburg, which is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the conference centre. We are looking for people to help with all kinds of stuff: Audio / Video, lunch, dinner, helping and announcing speakers, troubleshooting, etc - if you sign up beforehand, you can indicate what you prefer to help with. Hi all! At any conference, the hallway track is at least as important as the "formal" talks and workshops, and for openSUSE Conference and Kolab Summit we think we have an excellent selection of social activities to engage in and get to know your fellow conference attendees! For Friday we don't have an "official" social event planned, how ever we won't leave you hanging in midair! At the conference venue we'll have the pretty great AwesomeRetro gameconsoles to improve your Duckhunting skills and suchlike and there will be simple food like fries and suchlike. Beer: However, we also arranged a room at what has officially been awarded as "The Netherlands Best Beer Restaurant" which is Rootz slap bang in The Hagues' great city center near the Grote Markt!
